John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 7 Saturday, 24th May 2014
Match of the Round: Gungahlin (3) vs. Royals (4) – Nicholls Oval, Nicholls First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
This weekend’s matchup between these two clubs will be one to watch as we reach the half way point of the season. Gungahlin started off their season in outstanding form, but have suffered two losses in a row and now sit third on the ladder. Whereas Royals are yet to find the form that took them to the Grand Final last year, but are still in the top four at present. Gungahlin will be very disappointed at their second half efforts last weekend which saw them give up a half time lead and be held scoreless in their loss to Queanbeyan. To the Eagles credit they were able to secure a four try bonus point, but this weekend they will be looking for an 80 minute performance especially against Royals. No changes have been made this weekend by Coach Owen Finegan. Royals made easy work of Easts last weekend giving them their second win of the season as they start to build as a team and push to hold down a spot in the top four. Standouts for Royals were half back Pedro Rolando and Lock Tyson Tamihere with Pedro scoring 15 individual points and Tyson leading the way in attack and defence. We can expect the clash to be very physical, intense and come down to the wire with both teams having a number of quality players who have the x factor to open up the game at any stage. The last time these two teams played: Round 17, 2013 (Royals 26 def Gungahlin 21)
Easts (7th) vs.Uni-Norths (6th) – Griffith Oval, Griffith First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
This match is very important for both teams as they will not only be playing for the inaugural ‘Owen Brown Memorial Cup’ which celebrates the services of Owen Brown to ACTRU and his relationship with both Easts and Uni-Norths but they will also be playing to keep their season alive. Easts are yet to win a game and a loss on Saturday will almost mean it will be highly unlikely for them to make the four, while Uni-Norths need to win this game if they are to stay in contentions of making the four with results going their way. While disappointed with their efforts against Royals last weekend, Easts will see this game as a great opportunity to get there first win and will also be fired up to come away with the silverware of the ‘Owen Brown Cup’ who played a major role at Easts. Uni-Norths will look to continue on their improved form despite their loss against Wests, a game they could have went either way. Unfortunately for the Owls they were unable to crack Wests defensive line when the game was in the balance. A number of changes have been made with a reshuffled backline for the Owls, while GP Pretorius comes onto the wing for Easts. The last time these two teams played: Round 19, 2013 (Uni-Norths 46 def Easts 36)
Queanbeyan (2nd) v Wests (5th), Campese Oval, Queanbeyan First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
After being behind at half time Queanbeyan will be high in confidence after producing an impressive second half effort to hold Gungahlin scoreless and score 27 unanswered points to secure the bonus point win. This achievement is no easy task, especially against Gungahlin who have been in some red hot form, and with nd the match being at Nicholls. In saying that Queanbeyan can’t afford compliancy now as they currently sit 2 on the ladder and a couple of slip ups could see them come back to the pack. Debutant Aiden Kenworthy and Neori Nadruku have retained their spots this weekend against Wests after impressive performances especially Aiden who score two tries. Despite the loss to Tuggeranong last weekend, Wests are starting to show some encouraging form and are just outside the four a present due to for and against. A win this weekend will put Wests in a good position for the second half of the season while a loss and results going against them, could see them start to slip out of contention. The Lions will be boosted by the return of number 8 Uelese Uelese who will add some much needed go forward ball against Queanbeyan. This match like the rest of the round is a very import games as we start to coming into the business end of the season. Both Wests and Queanbeyan have big forward packs so the break down will be very fierce while the battle of the Momsen and Luteru brothers in the centres will be very exciting and hard fought. The last time these two teams played: Minor Semi Final, 2013 (Queanbeyan 45 def Wests 18)

MATCH PREVIEW Both Easts and Uni-Norths remain winless and it will be a big game for both teams as they look to break the losing streak. Easts showered a spirited effort against Royals, but Royals were to strong in the end. Uni-Norths will be fresh from there bye and ready to continue on the form that saw them score 4 tries against Wests.
The Owls currently sit just outside the top four thanks to securing 5 bonus points to go with their one win. A win this weekend could see them enter the four for the first time. Easts though, are yet to register a win, but they always rise to the occasion when playing at home.

MATCH PREVIEW After the bye, The Owls sit just outside the top four and with a win this weekend they could sneak in there for the first time this year. A win over Wests will give Uni-Norths plenty of confidence as they continue to improve. Easts still remain winless and were unable to prevent Royals from getting the competition points. At home though, Easts are always a different side and can upset any team on there day.
Both Uni-Norths and Easts are yet to secure a win so this will be a very intense and exciting match. The Owls went down to Wests in round 5 before the bye in a hard fought match and will draw confidence from that. Easts showed a much improved team effort going down to a hard Royals outfit last weekend. This game will be a close fixture and can go either way.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan’s 2ndgrade have again come away with another draw, this time with Gungahlin Eagles. The Whites currently sit on top of the ladder but have Tuggeranong and Gungahlin nipping at their heels. Wests on the other hand are just outside the four on for and against and a win this weekend could see them sneak into the four and have some leverage on the bottom placed teams.
As we hit the half way point of the season, Queanbeyan currently sit comfortable in 2nd while Wests in 3rd lead the bottom half of the ladder who are all within 2 points of each other. The Whites were able to secure a promising win over Gungahlin in round 6 where as Wests had a tough day at office going down to the highly fancied Tuggeranong side. Wests are in need of a win this weekend or they could potentially be outside the top four.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan’s are currently sitting 1st as we enter round 7 and are yet to lose game but went close after having a 15 all draw with Gungahlin in the Grand Final replay. Wests however suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Tuggeranong and now sit 5 points outside the top 4. If they secure a win it will keep them in touch with the top four.
This match in 4th grade is the match of the round as it is 1 v 4. Wests were at the other end of a 52-0 drumming by Tuggeranong but still remain in the top four, while Queanbeyan gave out some punishment of their own in a 61-17 win over Gungahlin. MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin will be looking to improve form there 15 all draw with Queanbeyan on the weekend. The draw now has Gungahlin sitting 3rd on the table, 7 points clear of Royals. If Gungahlin win this weekend it will create a lot of space between then and 4th place. Royals scored a bonus point win over Easts to put them into the four on for and against and a win this weekend will be vital for them to stay in the four.
With only one point separating these two teams this is a must win match for both teams. A loss could see them go as low at 6th on the table, while a win could see them potentially go as high as 3rd on the ladder. Both Eagles and Royals do enjoy throwing the ball around and we can expect a lot of attacking rugby, but both will have to play to the conditions with Nicholls known for its windy conditions.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Monaro First Division is into round 6 this weekend and all six clubs are playing. With ADFA and RMC back from being unavailable there will be plenty of rugby on outside of the Canberra Region. This weekend’s match of the round will be Goulburn v ADFA in Goulburn. Goulburn will also be having all there junior grade play at Poidevin Oval so it will be a big day for the Goulburn club. Yass will be at home this weekend to take on Hall in a match that is traditionally a very hard fought contest. Yass like Goulburn will also have their junior grades player before 1st and 2nd grade. Both the Rams and Bushrangers will be confident coming into this match after securing much need wins. Players to watch in this game will be both fullbacks with Hall’s Sevu Camivuna scoring a hatrick last weekend and Yass’s Luke Darmody scoring a double. Cooma will play their first game a home this year and will be chasing their first win against a much improved RMC team. Cooma had a close loss to Hall, but now having a few games under their belts, the Red Devils will no doubt start to get some confidence and momentum. Cooma and ADFA will be playing back to back matches this weekend due to their round 4 rescheduled match. This will be played at Cooma at 12:00pm and 1:30pm. First Division - 1st Grade TEAM

SECOND DIVISION: This weekend is another blockbuster as Second Division is shaping up as being one of the closest contests in recent years and it is only round 4. Jindabyne who have been the benchmark the last two years will have the weekend off are two wins and a draw, but are showing signs they are not as strong as previous years. In saying that, Jindabyne to their credit still continue on there undefeated run stretching back to the start of 2012. Boorowa will be hosting Taralga this weekend and will be the match of the round. Boorowa showed promising signs against Jindabyne only to fall short by 9 points. This is two close losses in a row for Boorowa who are not far away from their first win. Taralga secured their first win of the season with a comprehensive victory over Bungendore 36-5 at home thanks to outside backs B. Marmont and T. Buckley scoring doubles. The matchup between the two clubs will be one to watch as these two clubs battle it out for much needed early competition points. Bungendore will be very disappointed with their efforts last weekend and will be looking to turn it around at home against Crookwell. The Mudchooks at home are always a very hard team to beat, and this clash with be another great Second Division match. Crookwell were unlucky not to come away with the competition points in their draw against Jindabyne and will be ready to continue on from there encouraging start especially after having the bye.
