John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 8 Saturday, 31st May 2014
Match of the Round: Royals (4) v Wests (5) – Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
With both teams riding confident building away victories from the weekend, we can expect this match to be another classic match of the round. Both victories were built on the back some brutal defensive efforts and some attacking flair and I can assure the same will be happening this weekend. Wests and Royals are locked on 19 competition points and with a game against each other on Wednesday, coming away with the maximum competition points will be vital for both clubs.. After Wests bonus point 29-17 victory over Queanbeyan, they are now one competition point behind Queanbeyan and Gungahlin and tied with Royals, making every game, especially this one very crucial if they are to be in the top four this year. Number 8 Uelese Uelese was a stand out for Wests against Queanbeyan as was Michael Smith, Drew Southwell and the ever-consistent Charlie Luteru. Coach Craig Robberds was impressed with his team’s defensive efforts as well as their long range tries off counter attack. Royals have now won two matches in a row and like Wests are starting to put some serious pressure on the teams sitting above them on the competition table. Royals produces not only a great defensive effort to hold off Gungahlin, but a great attacking effort coming from behind in the second half to steal the victory from the Eagles. Lachlan McCaffrey, Sokai Tai, Nathan and Filipe Fanau stood out for Royals in the forward pack which led the way for both attack and defensive execution. The last time these two teams played: Round 14, 2013 (Royals 42 def Wests 21)
Uni-Norths (6th) v Gungahlin (3rd) – ANU North Oval, Turner First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
Uni-Norths Owls have won their second match this year, bettering last year’s efforts after defeating Easts for the Owen Browne Memorial Cup 31-28. The Owls led 31-16 with about 10 minutes to go and held off a fast finishing Easts side for an important victory. David Bennet was a standout out for Uni-Norths as was the rest of the forward pack who laid a solid platform for the backs to attack. This weekend match will be crucial if the Owls have any chances of putting pressure on the teams above them for a finals birth and will need to have both forwards and backs firing. Gungahlin have continue their drop down the competition ladder with a disappoint 29-20 loss to Royals at home. The Eagles let slip a 9 point lead which made the loss even more frustrating. However the Eagles are yet to be written off, and we know they will come out fired up as they look to end a 3 game losing streak and rejoin the winners circle. Gungahlin will be boosted by the inclusion of three brumbies players in key positions and the return of promising fullback Jordan Fulivai. The last time these two teams played: Round 1, 2014 (Gungahlin 31 def Uni-Norths 14)
Tuggeranong (1st) v Easts (7th) – Viking Park, Erindale First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Tuggeranong are the only undefeated side in the competition and will look to keep it that way this weekend against a winless Easts. Fresh from the bye, Vikings will have had plenty of time to recover after their impressive 33-22 victory over Wests. Leading the competition by 8 points, Vikings are well clear of the battle that is going on for the remaining spots, but a slip up would see the pressure back on Tuggeranong. Front Rower Sione Taula returns to the starting side as does Beau Mokotupu at half back with Rowan Perry away with Australia u20’s duties. A fast finishing Easts outfit almost pulled off a memorable victory over Uni-Norths but feel short after the damage had already been done in the first half. Playing for the inaugural Owen Browne Memorial Cup, it was always going to be a big day for Easts as they looked to break there 4 match losing streak. Peni Liko, Mac Laundenbach and Darcy Eason were among the standouts as Coach Jeremy Osborne praised his team’s effort and passion as they continue to improve each week. The last time these two teams played: Round 17, 2013 (Tuggeranong 64 def Easts 21)

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong will be fresh from the bye and looking to continue their winning ways. Currently in 3rd on points difference, a win could see Viking go as high as 2nd while a loss will see them remain in 3rd, but without as much of a buffer on 4th place. Easts secured their first win of the year and will draw a lot of confidence coming into this match.
Easts Colts showed a spirited efforts against the Owls and even led mid way through the first half, but succumbed to Uni-Norths attacking flair in the 2nd half. Tuggeranong colts remain underfeated and are two points clear at the top of the ladder. A bonus point win for Tuggeranong would see them go 3 points clear of Queanbeyan as they have the bye.

MATCH PREVIEW The third grade competition is one of the tightest thus far and Tuggeranong currently sitting in third are in the middle of it all. Easts on the other hand are coming 7th but after getting there maiden victory against Uni-Norths will be full of confidence they can mix it with the best.
Tuggeranong 4th grade currently sit atop of the table having not lost a game. Coming back from a bye, the boys will be ready to taking on Easts who after a breakout 2013 season are yet to replicate that performance and currently go into this match without a victory in 2014.

MATCH FACT A victory for the Owls could see them go to 17 or 18 competition points in 6th spot, potentially putting them a bonus point win away from the top 4. Where as a loss could see them drop at least 10 points behind the four. For Gungahlin a bonus point victory could place them in 2 nd spot while a loss could see them potentially drop as low as 5th.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths suffered a heartbreaking 19-14 loss to Easts on the weekend keeping them winless thus far. Taking on Gungahlin will be another tough ask as the Eagles are in form after a bonus point victory over Royals has them placed 2nd on the ladder. Gungahlin defeated the Owls comprehensively in round 1 36-19 and will look to continue there high scoring abilities.
Both Uni-Norths and Gungahlin are tied on 18 competition points and this is the colts match of the round. Uni-Norths after their bonus point victory over Easts saw them jump to 3rd on the ladder having Eagles sit 4th after their impressive win over Royals. The last time these two teams played there were plenty of running rugby so we can expect the same.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths suffered a disappointing 2 point loss to Easts last weekend having the kick to draw the match after the siren. However despite the loss they were still able to secure 2 bonus points. Gungahlin sit just about the Owls on the ladder by 2 points and this is 3rd grade match of the round. The Eagles went down to Royals 36-24 but like the Owls manager to secure a vital bonus point.
Uni-Norths 4th grade secure their first win of the season with a bonus point 24-5 win over winless Easts. The Owls now sit 1 point clear or Gungahlin who are in 6th now after a 56 point loss at the hands of Royals. Both clubs will be desperate for a win as they looked to remain in connection with the top 4.

MATCH PREVIEW Like colts this matchup is very important as both teams are locked on 14 competition points in 4th and 5th positions with point’s differential is all that separates them. Both clubs are coming off 20 plus point losses and will be looking to tighten up their defensive efforts this weekend.
This colts game is very important for both teams as a win could potential see them enter to the top 4, where as a loss could see them distance themselves from the top 4. Wests suffered at 10 point loss to Queanbeyan where as Royals picked up a bonus point in their 5 point loss to Gungahlin.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals came away with a bonus point victory over Gungahlin to have them sitting atop of the competition table. Wests currently sitting in 6th secured a 19 all draw with Queanbeyan which will give them some much needed confidence at the battle for top four position gets closer.
Royals 4th grade had a monstrous 66-10 victory last weekend which has them placed 3rd at present one point behind Tuggeranong. A bonus point victory to Wests this weekend could see them on equal competition points with Royals creating a very interesting battle for positions on the ladder.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Round 6 saw some comprehensive wins for clubs creating a very close competition except for Goulburn who are undefeated and are well clear of the rest of the competition.
SECOND DIVISION: Round 4 in Second Division was a very entertaining round with high scoring affairs and close matches which further indicates the competitiveness of the competition.
In the match of the round game no one saw this results coming with Goulburn showing there dominance with a thrashing of ADFA 84-0. The Dirty Reds scored 14 tries with two players (Mick Webber and Ben Todkill) scoring hatricks. Continuing Goulburn’s winning ways, their 2nd grade team won 50-5 over ADFA.
Crookwell and Bungendore came down to the wire with Crookwell holding on for a 29-21 win. Both teams threw the ball around and scored some great tries but an Aaron Leighton double proved to be the difference. Crookwell now sit 2nd on the table with lack of bonus points being the difference between them in Jindabyne. Bungendore remain at the bottom, but with the bye this weekend it will give them an automatic 4 points potentially lifting them off the bottom.
In other matches Hall got there second win of the season over Yass at Yass 41-19. Yass were unable to get the competition points in front of their home fans. Hall went back to back with 2nd Grade holding of Yass 17-5 in a hard fought victory. Cooma hosted RMC and RMC have continued on their impressive form with a 32-10 win giving them 3 wins from 3 matches. Cooma 2nd grade joined the winners circle for the first time with a 14-8 victory to give the home crowd something to cheer about. Round 7 match of the round is the local derby between ADFA and RMC. These matches are always close and played with a lot of emotion are they look to get the bragging rights over their neighbours. Cooma will host Yass while Goulburn and Hall take on each other.
Taralga ran in 6 tries to 4 to defeat Boorowa at Boorowa 38-20. Boorowa were unable to convert their try’s which would have put pressure on Taralga during the game. Matt Black scored a double for Boorowa while Taralga benefited from a Ben Marmont double and Joel Croker scoring 13 points. This weekend’s match of the round is Taralga v Jindabyne at Taralga. This will be a very tight match and we can expect it to be a very fierce battle. Crookwell play host to Boorowa with Boorowa in search of their first win and Crookwell looking to continue putting pressure on Jindabyne at the top of the table with a victory. Second Division

BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT 2014 Monaro Representative Team Congratulations to the following players who have been selected in the 2014 Monaro Representative Team to compete in the 2014 Brumbies Provincial Tournament. The Brumbies Provincial Tournament will be held this year in Jindabyne over the June Long Weekend at John Connors Oval. The Monaro Representative Team is made up of players in the Monaro 1st and 2nd Division Competitions. They will play matches against Southern Inland and South Coast as well a match against South Australia, who will be taking part in the tournament for the first time. While the matches against South Australia will not count towards the tournament it will be a great opportunity for teams to test themselves against other opposition. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Brumbies Provincial team (made up of Southern Inland, Monaro and South Coast only) will be selected to take on the Australia Police Representative Team as the curtain raiser to the UC Brumbies vs. Western Force at GIO Stadium on Friday 11th July. Best of luck to all players involved in the tournament.
