On Your Mark… Get Set...

Go!

A young lady called me out of the blue one day. She had been struggling with being obedient to what God had instructed her to do. She was in tears as we spoke, but was rightfully convinced that God had given her an assignment. She wasn’t questioning the authenticity of the vision or if this was even the “right season”. She was not even perplexed with the idea that maybe God had not called her to do this great work. But as we began to talk, more and more she opened her heart and asserted, “I just don’t know where to begin.” My response was without any hesitation as I am consistent with any person who’s in a similar dilemma. Amazingly, I had been in this same place years ago. So, I was quite sure my testimony and what the Holy Spirit had taught me would be very beneficial to her. I replied, “Sis, I know just where you should begin—on your knees.”

ears ago, I attended a local college track meeting. I watched the official Starter approach his station of the track to give the commands. At his signal, the runners moved into their assigned lanes waiting eagerly for the next three commands. But I was simply elated with the first–“On your mark.” This prompted all the participating runners to crouch to their knees. From this stance they were able to have a more powerful push off than if they were to start from any other position. Starting from their knees would launch them further into the race and ahead of the other opponents. To me, this posture was undoubtedly the most important and it is spiritually interchangeably so for you and I. It does not matter if you are just starting as a new babe in Christ or simply just starting to fulfill the purpose God has assigned to you, you have to learn to start each day of this Christian race on your knees with prayer. Prayer is the exercise of your faith and hope. It is the privilege of touching the heart of the Father through His son, Jesus. Prayer is the place of admitting your needs, adopting humility and claiming dependence upon God. It is communication to God and taking the time to listen to Him. And when you choose to start your day with an honest and open conversation with God, it is the perfect opportunity to find answers to your questions, receive daily instructions and get the push off you need to win against the adversary. Think about it, would you ever parachute from an airplane without first listening to the instructor? Would you ever try to repair your vehicle’s transmission without first asking the manufacturer where you should begin? Your daily conversation with God in prayer is imperative if you’re going to succeed in your assignment and in life. Jesus understood the importance of prayer as Mark 1:35 states, “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” Yet, too often we ignore prayer and seek to accomplish things in our own strength. We choose to start our day with a fresh cup of coffee rather than a fresh wave of God’s anointing. I once read a church’s announcement board that displayed “7 days without prayer makes one weak.” While the essence of this statement is entirely true, even going one day without prayer can lead to a day full of frustrations, complications and disappointments.

LEARN TO LISTEN MORE I’ve seen the Verizon commercial many times over the past few years, but never thought of it on a spiritual basis. I am developing my faith and the ability to hear God each day as I pray. My prayer is that Christians will learn to do a lot less talking to God and listen to Him. I believe what He has to say is more important. Cherise B. Email

HELP! MY FRIEND’S GAY I have been friends with a young man since elementary school. Recently, he opened up to me and confessed that he is gay. He asked me to attend a homosexual support program with him, but I am profusely against this lifestyle. How do I confront him about my decision without losing his friendship?

Dear Honest Friend, First and foremost, I commend you for creating an atmosphere with your friend where he feels comfortable opening up to you about his sexuality. Many young people who are homosexuals feel isolated and disfranchised because they are often judged and condemned for their lifestyles by the people they love. Believers have been instructed “to love one another as they love themselves.” [Matt. 22:39] Although you may not agree with his lifestyle, you should continue to love and respect him. The only way you will be able to share your beliefs with him is to maintain a relationship built on respect —not judgment.

Second, keep an open mind about your decision to attend the support group. The Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthian church that “he became all things to all people that he might save some” [1 Cor. 9:19-22]. As stated in your question, you are “profusely” against his lifestyle; however, attending this support program presents an opportunity to share the Word of God with him regarding homosexuality as well as others. Perhaps your friend is not An Honest Friend confident of his profession of being gay, hence, -Atlanta, GA the need to attend a support group. YOUTH MOVEMENT Started with One Kid The Lord has given Alphaeus Anderson and his wife Alexias a charge to gather the youth of this hour and provoke praise and worship through their pure hearts. Matthew 5:8 says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Pure-N-Heart (PNH) consists of over 400 children from SC, NC & GA, ages 5-12, rapping, singing, dancing, declaring scriptures and just simply expressing the God given talents incubating on the inside of them. This dynamic choir started in the Upstate of South Carolina and surrounding areas. Alphaeus remembers the first and only PNH kid who was not only the first to show up at the first rehearsal, he punched Alphaeus in the stomach upon introduction. That was enough to discourage anyone from starting a children’s choir. That wasn’t the end, but the beginning of a great movement of hundreds of children and youth affecting thousands. Alphaeus admits his approach is different but it gets results— and those results have been incredible. PNH has now extended to the other parts of SC, NC & GA. Although though PNH is becoming a respected choir in the Gospel Industry, receiving a Stellar Award Nomination, NC & FL Gospel Announcers Guild Award Nominations, the ultimate goal of PNH is to promote discipline, unity, positive attitudes and relationships and usher in God’s presence through the songs that are performed. In 2010, PNH added a new leg to its organization—Teen Pure-N-Heart (ages 13-21). Both choirs now have new CDs that have been released and are impacting music ministries across this country and beyond. Visit www.purenheartkids.com or www. teenpurenheart.com for PNH music, DVDs, sheet music, and activity pages or download PNH music on amazon.com and iTunes.com.

BELLY LAUGHS

Can Help Fight Off Disease

newborn is a smile. After the first real smile, presuming it wasn’t an attack of gas, we long to hear the first giggle and from there, the much anticipated “belly laugh.” Why is laugher so important? It’s an outward sign of good health. It’s no secret that laughing in the midst of a crisis can help relieve stress. But research now shows laughter can do so much more. According to the article, How Laughter Works 1, “Laughter reduces the levels of certain stress hormones which can suppress the immune system, increase the number of platelets (which can cause obstructions in arteries) and raise blood pressure. Laughing increases the presence of antibodies inside our bodies that fight against tumors and viruses.” How incredible is this? When we giggle a little it makes us feel good, but when we laugh fully and heartily it can help our bodies fight off diseases. A team of researchers at the University

It has shown for the first time that laughter is linked to the healthy function of blood vessels. Laughter appears to cause the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels, the [endothelium], to dilate or expand in order to increase blood flow. Stress has been known to inflame the very same lining that laughter helps. Heart disease, suppressed immune systems, tumors and viruses can be warded off by the act of laughing. Here are a few helpful tips to help increase the flow of this God given act of audible healing if laughing doesn’t come naturally to you. n Smile more often. DON’T LET YOUR PAST Paralyze your Potential

MONEY WI$E Biblical Stewardship Starts with the Heart You can find a lot of practical financial tips on the Internet today which include how to budget, invest, get out of debt and so much more. But it’s not those tips that will help you become a better steward of God’s resources and experience financial freedom. Financial freedom starts with a change of heart. It starts with reading scriptures about money and praying for God to help you see money as His resource entrusted to you to manage. You can then work on changing your behavior and implementing practical financial tips. Eventually, your bad money management habits will be less desirable to you. You’ll want to live for God above your desires and follow His financial principles and plan for your life. Your resources will become His resources. You’ll want to earn more to give more and avoid debt to become free to serve God and not money. “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Cor. 4: 1-2). Jason Price blogs about personal finance from a Christian stewardship perspective at www.onemoneydesign.com

Some of us can think back in retrospect of our past and would rather forget it! Well, we should give thanks for all things including our past, but more importantly we must choose to learn from these experiences instead. An old proverb says, “Past experiences are golden links in the chain of our lives. Without these links, we would not have a chain.” Our past can only become harmful to us if we allow it to paralyze our potential. It’s true. Experience is the best teacher. So why not begin to write books, songs and minister from the pain and passion of your past?

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

Choose today to allow the pain from your past to give you a new passion to help you reach your full potential. Forgive everyone from your past who may have hurt or offended you. It’s important that you learn to bless those who may have offended you so you can continue to be blessed. You can do this by calling or visiting that person. Ask them to forgive you and let them know you have forgiven them. Pray with them, and happily leave and move forward.

If you used to have a bad temper, committed robbery, sold drugs, disrespected others or just lived a dangerous life, share your past with the young man or woman who seems to be going down a similar path. Let them know what you have learned and how your heart and mind has been renewed and transformed in Christ. Don’t let anyone try to hold your past over your head. Boldly tell them, “That was then and this is now.” I can testify that my passion was birthed out of my pain and I discovered my wealth in my wilderness. Remember, you do not have to prove to anyone that you have been changed. Allow your actions to speak louder than anything you say and your life will speak for itself. Everything you have ever experienced was purposed to make you stronger and wiser. So choose to hug and appreciate your present because that’s exactly what it is —a “present” from God. Accept this gift and enjoy the rest of your life. The best is yet to come. SUMMER 2011 | 9

National Back To Church Sunday, a cross-denominational movement to reverse declining church attendance and encourage everyone to revisit congregational life, will be celebrated Sept. 18 across the country. “God’s word tells us to spur one another on toward love and good deeds, and not give up meeting together,” Hamilton said (Hamilton is the 2010 American League Championship Series MVP). National Back To Church Sunday has become the single largest community outreach in the nation with 10,000 churches expected to participate in 2011. This event reignites the power of personal invitation to empower church members to bring the community back to church. This year’s event will be held the second Sunday after Labor Day to accommodate more churches. An interactive Facebook page is available at http:// www.facebook.com/backtochurch. Gospel Music For Sudan

Dave and Jess Ray’s life was forever changed after returning from there travels to the remote village of Kulu in southern Sudan. There they experienced the life and vibrancy of a people who give out of poverty, laugh in the midst of incredible hardship, and survive against seemingly insurmountable odds. The impact on Dave and Jess was deep and lasting, leaving them with a desire to use their music to serve the people of southern Sudan. It was that desire that would become the genesis for Music for the Radio, a partnership with Aid Sudan’s Radio Station Project, which broadcasts the Gospel, health information, and community development teaching in the tribal languages of southern Sudan. Each radio costs just $20 to manufacture and distribute and can reach 10-15 people. Currently over 1.3 million Sudanese live in the broadcast area of the Aid Sudan network, and thousands of radios are already reaching tens of thousands of people. But thousands more are needed. When you purchase the Music for the Radio EP, everything we receive goes toward the purchase of additional hand-held radios. And there’s more! When you donate more than $1 we give you a free gift of music from other artists as well. Just $20 purchases a radio that can impact a family, or a village, or even an entire nation. That’s the power of the Gospel! Visit www.aidsudan.org or daveandjessray.com. for more information.

Hope, Love & Flop Flops for Haiti

More than 550 men, women and children in the Western Hemisphere’s most impoverished country received a new pair of flip flops this past summer, as a team of God Feet representatives traveled to Portau-Prince, Haiti. God Feet, a Faith inspired footwear Company gives a pair of new shoes to someone in need for each pair purchased. The team visited 7 orphanages and talked with countless Port-au-Prince locals, bringing a message of hope through Faith Inspired flip flops.

Many people in Haiti suffer from infection, parasites and disease caused from walking without shoes. “Given the conditions and warm climate in Haiti, flip flops are a great way to protect them from open sores and soil transmitted parasites caused from walking barefoot,” David Gillette, Founder of God Feet mentioned when talking about his recent trip to Haiti. God Feet sandals were specially designed for rough terrain, while featuring inspirational scripture and design.

There are over 1.5 million orphans in Haiti. Most orphanages are underfunded, under staffed and the children have nothing to call their own. “To a child who has nothing, a new pair of shoes means the world” Says Co-Founder Shannon Gillette, who was along for the trip. “We were able to spread the gospel through sandals, and help each child truly believe that they are special and not forgotten,” Shannon added.

In addition to visiting Haiti this Summer, God Feet has also launched a program called “Back 2 Church.” Churches all around the world can raise money and get God Feet for their mission teams by simply requesting their own unique promo code. Go to www.Godfeet.com. Mission teams all over the world will be able to provide a new and innovative dimension to God’s work, and perform their very own Flip Flop Drops.

DEFICIENTbyDESIGN

A

s Believers, we serve the God of perfection. He is the God of pure excellence and flawless in His actions. He is the God of consistent order and purposeful in His word. Each and every one of us was created in the mirrored image of His brilliance and matchless distinction. We are wonderfully made in Him as the perfect embodiment of His nature. And although we are the expressed image of His glory, it is by God’s own divine purpose that we were all created with an imperfection. Some of us have physical or emotional shortcomings. Some of us have intellectual or spiritual “issues”. Still, what places us all on even ground is the mere fact we are all deficient in some way. There are missing links in our character and intentional defects in our makeup. Whether we choose to call these imperfections flaws, faults or stigmas, there is an imbalance in all of us. And no, it was not a mistake. God did not misplace His design pattern or fail to develop you in some way. God did not overlook or forget His instructions when He created you. It was all a part of His divine plan.

Fill in the following blanks. How many times in your life have you said to yourself, “God can’t use me because I’m not _____________ enough? My _____________ makes me feel _____________ and is hindering me from moving forward in God’s kingdom.” The Bible provides us with numerous examples of men and women who were chosen to fulfill the will of God even in the midst of living with their “issues”. Some of these great and mighty men and women were first considered outcasts, indigent and unfavorable among people. Still, God chose each of them for His own purpose. God used Gideon (Jud. 6-7) who was fearfully threshing wheat in a winepress to lead an army of 300 to defeat Israel’s enemies who were as numerous as locusts. This was the same Gideon who said he was unqualified to save Israel because his clan was the weakest and he was the least important person in his father’s house. But God already knew this when He chose him as Commander in Chief and He promised to be with him.

Think about this for a moment. If you gave your child(ren) everything they needed without first developing a personal relationship with them, how much would they truly depend on you? How intimate would your relationship and conversations be? How would you relate to each other or would there be any relationship at all?

God used Moses who looked at his own disqualifications and his own inability to speak eloquently and asked God who was he that he should tell Pharaoh to release the Israelites (Ex. 3:11). But God knew this when He chose him and He promised He’d be with him to help him speak and teach him what to say (Ex. 4:10).

It is important that we begin to understand the true meaning and purpose of what we consider as weakness in our lives. Our limits are more than inadequacies and trivial aspects. They are uncommon opportunities for God’s unlimited power to be manifested in your life and in the lives of those around you.

In so many other examples, it was the individual who counted himself out. Not God. Moses identified his own vocal inabilities [Num. 4:10]. Not God. The Israelites saw themselves small and powerless as grasshoppers against their enemies [Num. 13:33]. Not God.

“God doesn’t require an interview or asks us to submit a resume. He just wants to know if He can use you for His glory.” Today, God has chosen you for a specific assignment to further the Gospel in the Earth. God has a way of using those whom the world would otherwise disapprove for His perfect pleasure. Out of all the men [and women] who may be more capable by talent, physicality or skill. God chose YOU. Why? Because God looks at the heart. When God created you, He was well aware of what He was doing. God doesn’t require an interview or asks us to submit a resume. He just wants to know if He can use you for His glory. Stop disqualifying yourself because others may not approve or you think what you have to offer is insignificant in some manner. Your lack is just what God wants as He is best able to use those who will acknowledge Him because they cannot accomplish purpose on their own; those who will listen because they don’t know it all; and those who will follow because they don’t know the way. God’s presence in your life is all the qualifications you need to fulfill His purpose and what He has called you to do. Look beyond your challenges and know that it in your weakness that His strength is made perfect. (2 Cor. 12:9). A person who is born with limited or no vision can be used to develop ideas and create inventions that will impact the lives of others who are facing similar challenges. Just as Louis Braille, a young boy who became blind due to an eye injury was sensitive enough to develop the Braille learning system. Yet, what if he had become frustrated with his complex? What if he had become angry with God to the point of being bitter and despising God for how he was created? God’s purpose for our deficiencies should not be limited to mere dysfunctions, but instead we should view them as God’s 1 “Purpose by Design”. God’s design of lack should not be viewed as a lack of design, but rather His own meaningful way of keeping us all connected. These missing elements in both you and I is what continues to drive our total dependence upon the Father. It is what should keep us humbl regardless of stature, title or fame. And it is an unending reminder that it is in Him that we “live and

Yet, not only does this lack further our total dependence upon His ability to provide for us and to supply our every need, it also helps establish and create lasting personal relationships between us all. We need one another. There are deficiencies in my life that only you can fill. You have an assignment to complete in my life and this is why the enemy strives to keep us separated. you think you are “flawed”, weak, or seemingly inconsequential. No, instead, remember that He uses the base, despised, nonentities of this world who are ordinary, often broken people to do extraordinary things. God is not looking at your wealth, your social status or your education — He’s looking at your heart! If your heart is willing and your life is available, then He is more than able to perform miraculous works through you for His Kingdom’s sake. Realize that the necessity of having Christ in our lives and

is even willing to influence us to destroy the relationships we have on our jobs, in our schools and in our churches. And if we continue to ignore one another, be unforgiving and remain separated from those who God has purposely placed in our lives, we’ll miss our opportunity for growth and development towards our destiny. Has God been asking you to do something for Him that you have been dismissing yourself from because of your imperfections? Have you been wondering “Who am I that God should use me?” Have you allowed the enemy to destroy your kingdom relationships with others? If so, understand that God uses imperfect and insignificant people to achieve His perfect and significant plans if they cooperate with Him. Don’t allow the enemy to convince you that God cannot use you because

Her name is Pretty Washington. Yes, Pretty Washington is what they call her. She’s a young, bubbly woman of God who is on a mission to empower and inspire people with television’s newest phenomenon, The Pretty Washington Show. On the outside she’s always arrayed with incomparable beauty and class. She’s mission-minded and zealous to the point of contagiousness. Yet, unbeknown to many who have the pleasure of meeting her, is a past framed by invariable disappointments and failures that streamlined her frustrations to give up. Pretty never imagined herself back in a place of purposeful pursuit, but she’s now living it again. Her dreams, hopes, apirations and more have been re-birth through prayer and a bountiful admission from the love of one good man. She’s living her dream again. The television show is taking the airwaves by storm and is expected to gain a larger following as it enters its second season. She is living out her dreams and accomplishing her God-ordained purpose. I sat down with the awesome woman of God, Pretty Washington to discuss what caused her to dream again.

opportunity? What is it that he saw in you?

Pretty: Well, Pretty Washington is no different from any other girl. I’m just someone who loves God, loves life and enjoy people. My entire passion is touching the lives of others to a point that they will change for the better and have a fresh perspective—that says, “I want to know the God she knows. Or I want to be around Pretty Washington because she’s uplifting, encouraging and on top of that, she’s a beautiful lady.” Showing the love of God is my joy. People have to know that life is good. It doesn’t matter what you’re going through, life is still good. You can rise above whatever you have been through. You can make it. With Him and through Him you can overcome. That in a nut shell is who Pretty Washington is. This is who I am.

Pretty: It was a lot of things. There were so many things I had been through. My past is full of disappointments and failures. I don’t believe anything ever gets lost in Christ even if He has to bring it back through someone else, He’ll bring it back. It can be through your pastor, your best friend or even a stranger. But you have to believe if it’s meant to be, it’s coming around again.

things I tried to make happen and I really wanted to accomplish. There were several business concepts that failed and so many people telling me no. All I heard was no you can’t have this and no you can’t have that. I was turned down so many times. The banks wouldn’t finance something I needed to happen and the disappointments and rejections were encumbering. So, in turn I shut down. Why dream again?

My husband and I are truly two different people. And this is a good thing. I’m more outgoing and he of course is calm. But he knows how I am with people and the passion that I have for life. He knows this is a part of who I

I had given up on myself. I had let it all go. It’s a hard place to be in when you no longer believe in yourself. RM: How was your television show launched? Did you just sit down one day and say I want to be on T.V.? Pretty: No, I didn’t. The entire idea was presented to me by my husband, Elliott. He came to me one day with the proposal and I thought to myself, “Oh, really? Are you sure?” He was very serious to the point that he had already chosen a name and everything. I had no response other than, “Okay.” Now to be honest, I liked the idea and information, but I wasn’t thrilled about the process. There’s always a process we have to go through. But after we talked about it for a minute, we prayed to be sure this was something God wanted us to do.

RM: What do you think led your husband to come to you about this great

am. So, I truly believe God allowed my dreams to be birthed through my husband. He was one of the few who knew how crushed my past had me. I was in a place where I didn’t even want to dream again. Dream? For what? I had given up on myself. I had let it all go. It’s a hard place to be in when you no longer believe in yourself. But one day after the launch of the television show, a pastor walked up to me and said, “God says you can dream again.” I was in awe. That was something! I just started crying. I started thinking to myself yes, I can dream again. After all of the disappointments, I could dream again.

RM: You talk about past disappointments a lot. What stopped you from dreaming? Pretty: It was a combination of unsuccessfulness. There were so many

Why try? I was at a point until I believed nothing good was going to happen. But this time things were different. I have a man of God who loves me and has faith in me. It’s real when you have someone in your life who can see the good in you, you don’t even see. What he spoke to me gave life. His words were uplifting and motivated me to the point where I believed again. He encouraged my soul.

RM: What was the last push forward? Pretty: I can’t say that there was one last thing. It was just having him in my life to pick me up from that place.

CONQUERORS

Men, by nature are conquerors. We have a conquering spirit. There is a drive inside each one of us to complete the task, accomplish the goal and to defeat the foe. This truth about men encompasses all that we are and all that we do.

are paid during a time when everything seems to be going up but our salaries. In the workplace the challenge has become that of keeping a good job in the midst of high unemployment. Even in the churches, we are challenged in our faith because of the state of affairs in the home and on the job. As a result of these challenges, some men have become frustrated. Some have become discouraged to the point of giving up. And some are just wondering what to do now. I believe that regardless to what is happening in our homes, on our jobs, in our extended families, or anywhere else, the conquering spirit in you and I will not allow us to just sit there and die.

Allow me to give you an example. When men go to the store, we usually go and buy exactly what we’re looking for and leave. On the other hand, women may go to the same store and typically take more Regardless of the frustrations, regardless of the time disappointments, regardless of the set backs, the looking for something innate nature of the conquering spirit that dwells to buy. in a man will rise up and cause him to keep going. When men open a gift, we’re usually not concerned about saving the wrapping paper or the bow. We are only after what’s inside the box. Why, because we have a conquering spirit. (Ladies, these examples are only to acknowledge our differences). Having stated this, we’re living in a day when we as men, to a great extent are being challenged on all fronts. In the home, the challenge has become making sure the bills

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12).

Regardless of the frustrations, regardless of the disappointments, regardless of the set backs, the innate nature of the conquering spirit that dwells in a man will rise up and cause him to keep going. It will tell him to try it again. It will tell him you can do it. And when it’s all said and done, you, the man will come out still a conqueror.

“Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God’s work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men - fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. They became conquerors

Is God’s glory detectable in your voice? You can set miracles into motion when you speak. When God’s Spirit is alive and active, your words command attention and demand a reaction. Whether you are in a high or low position, you have a sphere of influence.

THE QUEEN’S CORNER In 2010 I began making some important decisions about my life, career and pursuing my purpose for being on this Earth. “What did I really want to do; what did God REALLY want me to do! I decided I needed some letters of recommendation. I knew Dr. X or Pastor Z would have no problem endorsing me, but they didn’t. I began to ponder why and how this could be. The situation was a lack of confidence in me and my ability. Consider these scriptures 2 Cor. 3:4-5, “And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.” Live confidently knowing your recommendations from Christ has validated you, justified you, and landed you eternal life. SET IT OFF In 2 Kings 5:2-4, we read about a nameless servant girl who was a foreign captive. Her social status was not impressive, yet her voice was powerful and significant. In a single suggestion, her words ignited a chain of events that affected a nation. She set it off! Upon learning of her master’s ailment, she chimed in, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in

The high priest and the king recognized her prophetic gift and sought spiritual guidance from her during the reign of Josiah [2 Kings 22:14-20].

The Commander of the Syrian Army acquiesced to the suggestion of his lowly captive. He put his reputation on the line based on her words. The servant girl influenced the most powerful man in town. It reminds me of the folktale of the mouse that pulled the splinter from the foot of the lion. The helpless and vulnerable one becomes heroic. How did she attain such credibility?

Just like the servant girl, your words can set off a chain reaction. Build your own credibility. Live the kind of life that compels others to believe and share your words. We cannot choose which aspects of God’s salvation we want and discard the rest.

GOD’S GREAT S A LVAT I O N ! God’s salvation is so great that Scripture describes it in three ways. First, Paul says in Roms. 5:1-2a

complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6).

that “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have access by faith into this grace in which we stand.” The biblical truth of justification means Believers have been saved from the penalty of sin. We are no longer condemned sinners in God’s presence. We are cleansed saints!

Thirdly, Paul explains in Roms. 8:17b18 that “if indeed we suffer with [Jesus], that we may also be glorified together. For I consider the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be revealed in us.” The biblical truth of glorification means Believers will be saved from the presence of sin when we see Jesus in heaven.

Secondly, the author of Hebs. 10:14 teaches us, “By one offering [Jesus] has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” The biblical truth of sanctification means Believers are being saved from the power of sin. Actually, sanctification describes both the Christian’s position before God in Christ and the practice of growing in godliness on a daily basis (1 Cor. 1:2). When these first two truths are combined, it’s clear that the evidence of whether we “have been saved” (justification) is whether or not we “are being saved” (sanctification). Real faith demonstrates itself in actions (James 2:14-26). True Believers are “confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in [them] will

So God’s great salvation means Believers have been saved from the penalty of sin (justification), are being saved from the power of sin (sanctification), and will be saved from the presence of sin (glorification). We cannot choose which aspects of God’s salvation we want and discard the rest. If we claim to “have been saved” and “will be saved” but show no evidence that we “are being saved,” we need to examine ourselves to see if we are actually in Christ. While Believers “stumble in many things” (James 3:2a), the reality is that “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17). Is there evidence in your life that you have come to know Christ and will spend eternity with Him?

18 | SUMMER 2011 | WWW.RENEWEDMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

If not, ask the Lord to save you from the penalty of your sin through His death, burial and resurrection. (Roms. 10:9-10, 13). Humbly call out to God by His grace today in repentance, faith and surrender.

Hebs. 10:14: “By one offering [Jesus] has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”

Have You Ever Tried Jesus?

Take the God’s Plan of Salvation insert and allow Christ to enter your heart and your life right now. The Steps to Salvation are EASY AS 1-2-3 (Roms. 10:9-10) 1. Confess that you are a sinner who needs to be saved. (1 Jh. 1:9) 2. Believed that Jesus is God’s only begotten Son who lived, died and was ressurected for you. (Jh. 3:16) 3. Receive God’s free gift of salvation and Jesus as your life-long Lord and savior. (Roms. 6:23) YOU’RE SAVED!

We were moving forward with Aviara, our nutritional drink business and he wanted me to be the spokesperson for the commercials and advertisement. He was helping me back then to become more comfortable with being out front and speaking with people. He is truly my better half. God has blessed me with such a wonderful husband and I hope this is what he also thinks of me. But at the end of everything all the praises are due to God. Although my husband was there, it was all in the will of God.

RM: So, what is the concept of The Pretty Washington Show? What’s the aim? What’s the goal? Pretty: The Pretty Washington Show inspires people so that they can live their best life now. We feature stories and testimonies of others who’ve made it and people who are making it. If I did this, me, Pretty Washington, you can do it too. We all have struggles; we all have battles; we all go through things. Although you may suffer with low self esteem, you can still live your best life if you just believe and start moving. Get up! You’ve got to do something. You can’t just sit down and you can’t just stand there. God has deposited so much in you for others to withdraw. Get up and get moving now.

RM: In what direction is God is taking the Pretty Washington Show? Pretty: This is a ministry. It’s going to change a lot of people’s lives and the ultimate goal is if someone watching who doesn’t know Christ that they will come to know Him. That’s what it’s all about. There are times when we see others and how God is moving in their life and it inspires us to want to know Him even more. I’m not asking anyone to have a relationship with Christ as I do. Develop your own relationship with Him. Build yourself in Him. Build your life in Him. He has so much in store for you. You just have to want it as bad as He wants to give it to you.

RM: You keep emphasizing one single word—now. Why? Pretty: Every day you’re losing time. You have to do

something right now. Read a book pertaining to the dream. Take a college course or attend a workshop that’s needed to help you start your business. But whatever you do, do it now. Start talking to someone who’s where you’re trying to get or someone who’s already done that. Participate in your own life instead of speculating. You can’t just sit there. You’ve got to do something now. The scripture says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for” (Hebs. 11:1). What have you been believing God for? Where do you want Him to take you? Reactivate your faith today by taking the initiative to get started. He’ll provide the means and the way.

RM: When you look back over the last fifteen years of your life, would you have ever seen yourself in this place? Pretty: No ma’am. I truly believe it took my husband to speak into my life and to let me know I could do this. “You can do this,” he would say. “You’ve got so much potential in you. Your life is not over. [Crying] It’s not over. No matter what you’ve been through, your life is not over and you can start over right now and you can do it.” It takes people who love you and want to see you walking in purpose to speak into your life. It takes someone. It takes a mentor. It takes someone stepping into your mess, taking you by the hand and lifting you out.

RM: That’s awesome! So what do you say to that person reading this story who’s on the edge of giving up? Pretty: Don’t look at the “but”. Look at the “what”. What if you do this? What if you move forward? Look at what can happen for you. See yourself in a better place. Get excited about all the great things that will come to past. Praise God for what He’s about to do. Give yourself one more chance and move forward now.

Participate in your own life instead of speculating. You can’t just sit there. You’ve got to do something now.

Can I Have the Last Bite? Making sacrifices is an important aspect of a healthy marriage. It’s the little things you can do in your marriage that may have the greatest impact. A healthy marriage is the result of time and effort two individuals are willing to invest. With marriage comes the inevitable idea that sacrifices must be made to ensure a continual development of everlasting love, commitment and happiness. Making sacrifices should not be viewed as giving up something from yourself just to make your spouse happy. But the idea of sacrificing in your marriage is your true willingness and desire to see you and your spouse enjoying your marriage.

One key to our lasting relationship is we are honored God has blessed us with one another. And because we treasure this precious gift of love and companionship, we have committed ourselves to investing time in nurturing the relationship and consciously working to maximize our love potential. –Pastor Lucius & Donna McDowell

For example, we all have the same twenty-hours in any given day. Take some time each day to concentrate solely on your spouse. Whether it is simply taking time to help with chores or outside home duties such as yard work or just sitting quietly next to your spouse as he or she reads or watches television. You’ll get as much satisfaction as your spouse with the results of peace, contentment and love that will come from your sacrifice. Are you willing to give your last so your spouse can have more? Would you be willing to share the last slice of your favorite dessert all to make your spouse happy? Would you be willing to miss the last five minutes of a sports game just to listen to your spouse talk? Remember it takes the cooperation of two individuals to work together to create the marriage of their dream.

“Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:9).

From the first time I met Donna I realized there was something very special about her. We dated for about four months and e that time I sensed the peace of said during God that she would one day be my wife. After spending quality time with each other, the thing I felt in my heart concerning marriage became evident in my conversations. My tone and pace became very aggressive and assertive concerning our future. Although I was sure about what I was sensing, I failed to be attentive toward her feelings concerning the timing of such a serious discussion and what she was sensing concerning us. While being careful about not moving too slow, she was very cautious that we were not moving too fast. I took Donna to T.G.I.F for dinner one Friday night. She explained to me that I was moving too fast and it made her uncomfortable. I agreed to make the necessary adjustments and immediately began to move at a pace that was comfortable for the both of us. We both got in agreement concerning the will and the timing of God.

After dating for about four months, I had become very uncomfortable with Lucius he consistent conversation about marriage. It said was a Friday night when Lucius took me to dinner at T.G.I.F. The entire night I was thinking, thank God its Friday because I’m dumping him tonight! When Lucius brought up the subject I had no choice but to drop the bomb. I explained to him that he was moving way too fast for me and that I was at a place in my relationship with God that I could not afford to miss it. Lucius agreed to slow things down and I knew I needed to get God’s word on this matter. I prayed and asked God to reveal his perfect will to me. God told me that Lucius was the one that He had previously spoken to me about in my time of prayer. God said He was going to bring someone into my life that would love me more than I had ever known love and would likewise have a heart after Him. At that moment I was free to embrace my precious gift of love.
