Updated gas log heaters Cannon has updated their gas log heater collection for the 2014 season. Designed and manufactured in Australia they provide: rapid warmth; the enchantment and romance of a log fire without any mess; simple operation; plus high-energy efficiency and heat output. Their flexible flue system means there’s a Cannon Gas Log Heater installation option for almost every possible scenario. These heaters have a heating capacity of up to 80m2; with prices starting at $3,199. The Canterbury Classic range is available as either a Freestanding or Inbuilt unit. The Freestanding model can be powered by either LP or Natural Gas, both of which have a standard flue, an enhanced flame, double glass front and black finish. There are six variations in the range. The Fitzroy Profile is an Inbuilt range with a dual glass fascia as a standard inclusion and either a standard flue or Powerflue. There are four standard flue models that have a nonenhanced flame and feature: electronic controls; a choice of finish in black or platinum metallic; and powered by either LP or Natural Gas. There are also four Powerflue models that are differentiated by their enhanced flame and also feature: electronic controls; a choice of black or platinum metallic finish; and the option of LP or Natural Gas. The Powerflue models offer installation flexibility. They can be installed on any wall and vented horizontally from the back or side, vertically under the floor or through the roof; even in a multi-storey apartment they can be flued up through an internal wall or out under the floor.
New take on kitchen islands by Caesarstone Caesarstone has unveiled their Islands at Fuori Salone 2014, Milan [8-13 April], in collaboration with London-based design studio Raw Edges. Following a preview at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, Caesarstone has presented a further exploration of Islands with an interactive installation focusing on the domestic kitchen. Islands exhibit the design, beauty, quality and functionality of Caesarstone surfaces and reflect the signature creativity of Raw Edges’ work. Islands seek to reshape the typical interior arrangement by positioning the surface as the binding element of its design. Cabinetry and appliances are slotted into purpose-built voids within the Caesarstone surface itself instead of being placed atop or around it, thus highlighting the monolith’s value and functionality within a kitchen.

WaterGate® Leaf Guard The heavy-duty WaterGate® collection from Fielders is made from zinc, a durable, corrosion resistant material that is ideal for the Australian climate. It can be easily installed and comprises three different product options. GUTTER Leaf Guard is a highstrength leaf guard for standard 125mm wide gutters, suited to both corrugated and tiled roofs. By eliminating leaf litter, GUTTER Leaf Guard prevents overflow and clogging of gutters and drains, plus reduces potential fire risk. VALLEY Leaf Guard is produced in a perforated, pre-curved shape and spring-fits under the roof to protect the valley from leaves and branches. Purpose made, it ensures a secure fit with 140mm sizing suitable for houses. POP Leaf Guard incorporates a removable, perforated grate that can be quickly installed and removed, and prevents leaves, debris and other materials such as tennis balls from blocking entry to downpipes up to 100mm wide. Prior to installation you need to check that your house has standard 125mm wide guttering and a 5cm roof overhang into the gutter. If you are a DIYer you will need a pair of protective, thick gloves and tin snips. Available from hardware stores.

Automatic Pet Door The Autoslide Automatic Pet Door Kit ($399+p/h) includes two wireless push buttons for human-use plus pet mats. Once Autoslide is fitted to your existing sliding door, it can be opened automatically either via the wireless push buttons or via the built-in pull-assist. Doors will automatically close after the adjustable time delay.To activate the automatic pet door function, you first position the pet mats and then set the pet-opening-width to suit the size of your pet. It’s a simple two-step-process. There are two modes with these kits:Automatic mode; and Pet mode. In Pet mode, the door will automatically open for you and your pet. But when it’s time to stop your pets from going in-andout, you switch back to Automatic mode to temporarily disable the pet mats [eg at night time]. With the pet door kits, one wireless battery operated pet mat is placed on the inside of the house under a regular door mat to let your pet out; while the other wireless mat is placed outside for your pet to come back in. As an alternative, the pet sensors are mounted on your door frame and activates whenever your pet walks towards it. The Autoslide pet mode allows the door to open just enough for your pet to use it, thus reducing loss of heating or cooling.

Renovating ideas for small bathrooms The average bathroom measures less than 8m2. Non-slip enamelled steel External metal venetian shower surface shade-blinds Kaldewei’s Secure Plus is a virtually invisible full-surface anti-slip finish for enamelled shower surfaces. Available in the twelve matt colours of their Coordinated Colours Collection, it has advantages not only in terms of comfort and barrier-free access, but also facilitates design-oriented aesthetics in the bathroom. The Kaldewei Secure Plus enamel is permanently fired onto the shower panel made from 3.5mm enamelled steel. The result is a smooth material surface that guarantees complete and lasting safety and comfort underfoot. These enamelled shower surfaces are highly durable, robust and easy to clean. The Secure Plus anti-slip finish is available for Kaldewei enamelled shower surfaces in the Conoflat, Superplan, Superplan Plus and Xetis ranges in all shades of the Coordinated Colours Collection.
Over 80% of the radiant heat from the sun stays inside the building envelope once it has passed through the glass. This is great in winter; but when you want to stay cool in summer it is either uncomfortable, or the bills for air conditioning get expensive. Curtains do little to solve the problem as the heat is already trapped inside. External venetians offer a solution. Sonnenschutz Shade&Shield [from Paarhammer Windows & Doors] comprises a range of quality external shutters, including their recently developed EVB External Venetian Blinds. The aluminium blades have adjustable slat angles for easy control and regulation between natural light, heat entry and outside views. They can be manually or automatically operated, allowing integration with building control systems where required. The standard range has an 80mm slat width, spans up to 3000mm, and drops up to 2700mm. There is a variety of colours and blade shapes; and there are alternative headbox solutions to choose from. When required the blinds provide 100% blockout and clear views when retracted, and can tolerate wind speed up to 100km/h. Integrated roll-away flyscreens are available on certain options.
Height-adjustable kitchen benchtops When younger and older disabled or frail people cannot use kitchen facilities because of height or reach problems, the trend these days is to redesign the facilities around the person rather than require the person to adapt to the facilities. Accordingly, Enware now offers an expanded range of Danish-designed Pressalit Care manual- or electric-driven lifts for kitchen benchtops and wall cupboards. In the height-adjustable working environment standing and seated users, including wheelchair users, can work comfortably and safely. The height-adjustable lifting units help create a safe and ergonomically correct working environment in small as well as large areas, ranging from kitchens in private homes to facilities in shared residential, workplace and care environments. Worktops can be adjusted vertically 300mm; wall cupboards can be moved diagonally, both vertically and forwards; and from its highest position, the cupboard can be moved 430mm downwards and 180mm forwards. The latest lifters for free-standing surfaces – adjustable over 300mm and supporting lengths up to 3000mm – can be used in rooms where walls may not be strong enough to support wall mounted lifters. These clever lifts, stylishly contained within telescopic legs and behind cupboard fittings, enable people of different stature and physical capabilities to adjust the height of worktops and cupboards, so they can carry out as many functions as possible without assistance, whether standing or seated. The modular lifts can be incorporated into a virtually limitless range of standard and custom-fabricated cupboards and worktops, permitting professional and private users to combine them with the furniture of their choice, taste and professional requirements. Under new national harmonised workplace safety laws in all states, except Victoria and Western Australia, all managers of workplaces are now required by law to assess the risk of asbestos present in any workplace, and to develop an asbestos register and an asbestos management plan if it is found. Pre-mixed cornice cement For the convenient installation or repair of cornice, CSR Gyprock has released a Pre-mixed Cornice Cement [$21.95]. The ‘wet’ formula means there’s no mixing of water and powder, allowing you to skip the messy part and get on with the renovation-job. Clothes dryers without that moisture problem The Smeg SACD8 8kg clothes dryer is a condenser dryer, which means there is no hot, moist air being expelled from the dryer into the laundry. A condenser dryer uses a heat exchange to cool the air and extract the water vapour before returning the air to the clothes drum to collect more water vapour and continue the process. Therefore there is no need for ducting or ventilation in the laundry area. There are 20 programs that have been designed to suit every type of fabric from the most delicate silks and synthetics to woollens, denims, cottons and sports gear; plus an integrated sensor that will turn the dryer off when the required amount of dryness has been reached. You can choose from iron-, cupboard-, or extra-dry. There is also a choice of four different spin speeds – 600, 800, 1000 and 1200rpm – plus reverse drum action which reduces creasing in the load. Drying temperatures range from 5°C to 35°C so there is less risk of shrinkage or damage to delicate fabrics. It also has a one to 24 hour delay-start timer so that you can set the dryer to operate at night to take advantage of off-peak power. Other features include an internal light and the convenient plumbing of the water tank to negate the need for manual emptying. Guide for selecting pavers Stabilising grass & gravel surfaces Pavers can offer a practical and durable solution for refreshing outdoor areas. Boral accordingly offers some tips to help you combine practicality and design to achieve your preferred look. First establish a clear idea of your garden’s intended overall look, as paving can form the foundation of a landscape-theme. This can vary greatly from a beach-inspired design to a contemporary Euro-feel. Next, consider the practical requirements of the space. For example, poolside pavers should be salt-resistant and non-slip; while driveway pavers must be able to withstand weight and heavy traffic. When selecting a colour, always look at pavers outside in the natural light. Choose pavers that are a similar colour to your internal floors to provide consistency from indoors through to the garden. To open up small spaces, select neutral coloured, large pavers. Laying pavers in a stretcher bond pattern across the width of a path will make it appear more substantial. A retailer or landscaper can also advise on quantity. Maintenance should be considered, as some pavers will require resealing approximately every two years, depending on the area.

Under-rug heating options Coldbuster Australia supplies a range of heating products for the contracting and DIY markets and has recently added an underrug heater plus a footwarmer. Heat-pump clothes dryer The once energy-hungry clothes dryer has been reinvented, using half the energy of earlier models. Smeg has recently launched a heat pump dryer with a capacity of 7kg and 20 programs catering for cottons, denim, woollens, delicates, sportswear and shirts. The SAHP7 uses conventional heat pump technology – whereby the heat pump re-uses the hot air from within the dryer instead of expelling it like traditional vented electric-dryers. Advantages of the heat pump model are its lower energy consumption using about 45% less than vented models; and lack of condensation and heat emissions (which means there is no longer any need to duct the dryer).

Certified carbon-neutral bricks Brickworks Building Products has announced the launch of their new carbonneutral bricks and pavers under the Federal Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard. The bricks are available nationally under the Daniel Robertson brand and are manufactured by Brickworks’ subsidiary Austral Bricks at its Longford plant in Tasmania. The carbon-neutral certification of the range of pavers and bricks manufactured at Longford is largely achieved by the use of an alternative fuel for kiln-firing. That fuel is sawdust, a biomass material and a by-product of the Tasmanian timber industry. The use of low-emissions biomass, as opposed to fossil fuels, is largely responsible for the Longford plant’s low carbon dioxide emissions. Emissions from the biomass are just 215 tonnes per year - about the same as 12 average Australian households. The certification under the Carbon Neutral Program measures all emissions contributors, such as raw material extraction, onsite transport, product deliveries across Australia and internationally, water usage, packaging, waste and business operations - not just kiln emissions. 15 seconds – that’s how long a professional burglar needs on average to get through a door or window into a house. Because security at home is so important it is worthwhile to invest in products with security features. Concrete roofing tile in 12 colours Inspired by the latest trends, Monier Roofing’s new concrete tile colour palette contains a broader and more versatile range of colours. The new palette includes 12 new colours [not available in all states], allowing greater flexibility when it comes to the colour scheme of a home. The palette starts at the lighter end of the spectrum with a range of lighter tones in response to a shift to lighter-coloured roofs and the desire to manage climate change. The colour palette then deepens into tawny colours that are almost leatherlike and moves to the popular classics of mid-greys and earth tones, right through to black (Sambuca). Create a roof reminiscent of those seen in Spain, Italy and other parts of old-Europe Bristile Roofing now offers the Medio Curva from La Escandella Ceramica, a roof tile designed for architectural projects seeking to capture the distinctive and exquisite character of mission-style roofs that have crowned homes, civic buildings and architectural landmarks for centuries. Festool has revamped its range of dust-extractors by introducing the new CTL MINI/MIDI generation with up to 40% more suction power, and the new CT 17 E universal extractor. The 40% greater suction power of the new mobile CTL MINI and MIDI is attributed to the combination of 3,700 l/min suction capacity, 240 mbar vacuum and a special tapered suction hose. These two compact extractors are ideal for assembly, installation and renovation applications and are equipped with a number of intelligent features such as a hose holder for shorter set-up times; self-clean filter bags for constant suction power; and they are compatible with the SYS T-LOC system which can be attached to the top.

Smeg has seen significant growth in its compact appliances that are the standard 600mm wide but just 450mm high, designed to be installed in a bank either at the ‘midway point’ (chest or eye level) or underbench. The range comprises: convection oven with microwave [$3290]; combi steam/ convection oven [$4490]; dedicated steam oven [$3290]; microwave oven with grill function [$2790]; and a built-in coffee machine [$4290]. These appliances are offered in two distinct design aesthetics: the Classic all stainless steel (in the kitchen pictured); and the contemporary Linear in stainless steel and glass. Each appliance, be it Classic or Linear, has matching aesthetics to provide that homogeneous look to a kitchen.
Bosch has released their intelligent new combination induction cookers in 60cm [PIT651F17E, $2099] and 80cm [PIT851F17E, $2499] models. These CombiInduction cooktops feature two traditional round zones and two bridgeable zones with cross-electromagnetic coils. These are for cooking with large pots and pans, including roasting trays and teppanyaki plates. The cross-electromagnetic coils also ensure precise detection of the cooking utensils used. Depending on the size and shape of the pot or pan, either one coil or two coils can be activated for convenient cooking. The CombiZone function allows you to combine two smaller cooking zones into a single, large cooking area at the touch of a button; while MoveMode allows for a transition between fast boiling on the front-zone and simmering on the rear with a simple slide of the pot; and PowerBoost rapidly increases temperature levels. Integrating with modern kitchen-design, these frameless cooktops are sleek and contemporary in design with bevelled front and side edges.
The owners of the kitchen pictured, designed by Kim Duffin of Sublime Architectural Interiors, wanted to take full advantage of natural light and surrounding rural views. While the midpoint bank of appliances satisfied the ergonomics, ventilation posed a different hurdle. The Kaldewei Studio Bath provides a full-size bath solution which will fit into a 600mm space behind the door [at the foot end], opening into a full width bath to accommodate the bather in complete comfort. Her latest collection of basin mixers employs her signature style of clean lines and sleek simplicity. The collection titled KH Zero 2 is aerodynamic in form and has been designed to add a touch of luxury to any bathroom. Swiss hotel bathroom luxury Opened in December 2013, the Swiss Chedi hotel subtly blends tradition with modernity.
