Cordless plunge cut saw 18volt to 36volts Festool equipped its new TSC55 plunge-cut saw with a brushless EC-TEC motor and dual battery concept for operating up to 36V. Together with the new dust bag, it ensures dust-free work and as a cordless version it is the ideal plunge-cut saw for work in interior fittings independent of a mains power supply. Trusses for complex roof design solved by Pryda Using the latest version of Pryda Build software, Pryda combined with one of its Queensland fabricators, Bretts Frame and Truss, to solve the detailing problems faced with the complex roof design of an exclusive Brisbane home. The client wanted a large H-shaped home enclosing a swimming pool [complete with pool house] and six-car garage underneath. The roof design comprised a concave cross section shape with Balinese gable ends (reminiscent of a Buddhist temple) with sweeping curves from a high centre apex. The challenge was to make the roof curves perfectly symmetrical for the battens, which had to be at exactly 170mm centres to accommodate the roof tiles – made from recycled car parts that had been turned into a polycarbonate product imported from Ireland. The roof trusses were more than five metres high at the centre and therefore had to be manufactured in two sections. The roof comprised 155 trusses measuring more than 45m3 over the three sections – plus additional beams and posts. There were three blocks to each wing, manufactured one at a time, each block taking ten hours to complete.

Brigidine College is an independent Catholic girls’ high school in St Ives, northern suburbs of Sydney. While undertaking enhancement projects, the school engaged Fulton Trotter Architects to design a master plan concept for the school which included the introduction of a new Performing Arts building. As part of this redevelopment, Adbri Masonry’s Contracting Services Division won the tender to install over 1100m2 of the Ecotrihex® pavers for the external relaxation area that was to feature aesthetically pleasing, durable and sustainable permeable pavers. This segmental permeable paver features specially designed voids which, when laid together, allow surface water runoff to filter through the pavement surface into the sub-base, to be recycled or returned to the water-table.

Boral has added two new colours to its concrete paver range, providing home renovators with a greater choice in neutral pavers. Boral Abode® pavers are now available in Charcoal; and Stoneworks™ Travertine in Bluestone.

The pavement design worked perfectly with the special shape of Ecotrihex®, using the contrasting tones of Oatmeal and Sunstone colours to create a natureinspired mixed-use area. The project included the base preparation needed for the permeable pavement system; as well as the effort to cut and place pavers around the many landscape elements that were incorporated into the architectural plans. Makeover with PVC Panels Cobbs Bakery in the historic fishing town of Port Fairy in Victoria is celebrating it’s 50th birthday in 2014 and this called for a complete update of the century old premises including a facelift to the internal walls and ceiling of the large bakery behind the shop. Covering the tired surfaces with more coats of paint wasn’t going to provide the best outcome . So the business decided to clad these work areas with high gloss white Panelscape PVC panels and achieved an inspiring result. The panels require a minimum of maintenance and the fact that no painting is ever required is a huge benefit for the bakery. Also of great importance to the bakery is the fact PVC will not ignite, even from another flame, until it reaches about 378°C, and will not self ignite until about 454°C. These ignition temperatures are significantly higher than common framing timber, which ignites from flame at 260°C and self ignites at 410°C. The waterproof Panelscape PVC wall and ceiling panels are 5mm thick, 25 cm wide and come in lengths of 1.8M and 2.4M. The tongue and grooved panels simply slot into each other to provide a tight, almost invisible flush join thus making a continuous ceiling without the need for joining strips. Installation is so easy. To cut the panels to size, use a fine tooth saw. Holes for light fittings, ceiling fans or heating can be made with a utility knife or hole saw. Apply silicone adhesive to the back of each panel and fit them one at a time until the ceiling is fully covered. The panels are strong but very light in weight, not

like heavy plasterboard, and are quite easily lifted into position without effort. To keep the ceiling panels in place whist the glue is setting you should screw or staple at random intervals into the back lug of each panel during installation. The fixings will be completely covered up by the next panel. Panelscape PVC wall and ceiling panels are distributed by Handi Home Supplies, Melbourne. Refurbishing an old driveway while using the old material as a base StoneSet is a product engineered to renovate existing driveways. A recent home-renovation on the NSW Central Coast included a driveway-refurbishment, extending the usable area and improving the kerb-appeal. The existing 30 year old tiled-surface was still strong but looked dated. Rather than ripping it up to start again, it was utilised as the base for the new StoneSet surface employing resin-bound porous-paving technology. This represented an excellent cost saving for the home owner; as well as saving on unnecessary landfill. The StoneSet install was carried out over two days using their 6mm Charcoal blend, designed to last over 20 years. By using StoneSet the home-renovators were able to retain the existing concrete driveway, and reshape by adding new concrete pieces to change the driveway to suit the renovations of the dwelling. DIY-replacement mixer-tap system for old leaking taps and showers In many older homes leaking showers and taps can be a headache. In the shower it often starts with a few drips but eventually becomes worse. “Band-Aid” fixes like tightening the tap handles can sometimes lead to plumbing-damage; and getting a plumber to “reseat” the washers can sometimes be more than you budgeted for; and if this has already been done in an earlier plumber’s call [and cannot be done a second time] you may have to rip the tiles off, pull the wall out a bit and Before then replace the breech. This may cost around $2500! But there is a much more economical alternative. Renovating a 1960s house with a new Colorbond roof and carport A dated 1960s red brick veneer home in Sydney was recently renovated into a modern-looking home with the use of BlueScope COLORBOND® steel roofing products, supplied by Stramit Building Products. New waterproofing sheet roofing membrane The Cumberland Lorne Resort [Victoria] was facing major disruptions and a loss of bookings due to a seriously degraded roofing membrane causing leaks into a number of apartments and penthouses. The old torched-on membrane on the concrete roof had been repaired numerous times with little lasting success. Remedial specialists had advised the resort to remove the existing membrane, clean the concrete roof and then apply a liquid membrane to resolve the ongoing issue. But this was estimated to take 6-8 weeks. Moreover, it could be done only in the summer months due to the wet weather during the rest of the year. This would cause major distribution to the hotel and its guests and a potential loss of bookings. As an alternative, Ardex Australia suggested that their newgeneration ARDEX TPO sheet roofing membrane would significantly reduce the time and cost of the project along with the environmentimpact. The roof-refurbishment ended up taking just two weeks with a team of two to three contractors as compared to the eight weeks the initially specified liquid membrane application would have taken. That the application process was both fast and could continue irrespective of weather conditions was a major influence in the decision making.

ARDEX WPM 615 TPO is a high performance waterproofing membrane of thermoplastic polyolefin combining polypropylene and ethylene propylene rubber. The white colour of ARDEX TPO creates a heat-reflective index of over 70%, a high proportion of which is retained for the lifetime of the membrane due to its colour-fast retention properties.

Shower Plug is a clear penetrating sealer that imparts an invisible water-repellency to the treated tiled surface of the shower recess. It is very economical as there is no need for the expense of removing and replacing tiles and waterproofing membrane to fix a leaking shower. Leaking showers can lead to paint peeling on adjoining walls, mould and watermarked ceilings beneath shower recesses; and possible structural damage to buildings. Treating a new shower with Shower Plug will inhibit mould growing in the grout, making it easier to clean. It is easy to apply, using the brush and tray provided. Its Select button means that the water can be turned on and off even while you’re on the go, without impeding your work-flow. As with conventional single lever mixers, with Metris Select you turn on the water flow at the handle and set the required temperature and water amount. With the water-volume and -temperature pre-set you can turn the water jet on and off using the back of your hand or your elbow. The team at Kennards Hire has come up with their tips for sprucing up the deck or veranda so it’s ready for the flurry of BBQs and family gatherings during the warmer months. Inspect the area and clean the small gaps between timber slats and any other areas where leaves, dirt and pollen can build-up. Together these elements can hold water and saturate the wood, possibly causing it to rot. This helps drain any water that falls onto your deck. If you notice any splinters or rough edges some light sanding will do the trick. If you have a large deck, hire an orbital sander to make the job easier. For a thorough clean you can hire a pressure-washer. These are handy if your deck doesn’t receive a lot of sunlight and mould has developed over winter. Make sure you use a wide spray lance to prevent damaging the surface; and inspect corner crevices and ceilings. If your deck has faded and looks worn, you may want to consider re-staining it to bring it back to life. Hardware stores have a variety of colours and stains to suit individual preferences. Once you have applied a fresh coat of colour make sure you seal the deck with a water-repellent and UV-treated sealant. Using glazed bricks for decorative projects Glazed bricks are becoming an integral element in home-renovations, including internal and external feature walls, water features and alfresco open fire hearths and pits. The variety of colours, textures and glazes now available provides builders, designers and home-renovators an extensive palette to work with. A selection of three bricks from the PGH “silver greys” colour group was used in the construction of The Aria display home by Modernview Homes. Plasterboard that stands up to flames In late January 2014 a fire broke out at a Karaoke Bar in Burwood, Sydney. The fire fully engulfed the bar with flames and heavy smoke and threatened to spread to adjoining residential properties. The existing brick building, which housed the karaoke bar, was severely damaged by the fire; but the adjoining residential properties suffered minimal and mainly cosmetic fire damage. The minimal damage suffered by the adjoining boarding properties has been attributed to the use of CSR Gyprock Fyrchek. The product’s processed glass fibre-reinforced gypsum core is specially designed for use in fire rated wall and ceiling systems and where improved acoustic performance is required. In this case, it is a reminder of the difference a fire-resistant product can make. Gyprock Fyrchek is part of Gyprock’s specialty range of plasterboards. It is a fire and acoustic grade board with a specially processed glass fibre-reinforced gypsum core for use in fire rated wall and ceiling systems, and where improved acoustic performance is required. It is made in Australia and available in 13mm and 16mm thickness in 1200mm wide panels of various standard lengths from 2400mm to 3600mm. The long edges are recessed for flush jointing. Fyrchek is predominantly specified for commercial installations in areas where there is a higher level of fire resistance and/or acoustic performance required. A moisture resistant Fyrchek is also available for wet area applications.

Temporary safety overshoes for building-site visitors Trading Downunder has introduced the French-made Gaston Mille Safety Overshoe that slips over the top of visitors’ footwear. It features a 200J steel toecap with moulded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that shields against splashes, cuts, dust and abrasion. The slip-resistant half-sole is also made of TPU and has a protection tongue for the instep; the removable and interchangeable strap allows it to be adaptable to different heights and to be worn with heels; and as there is no direct contact between the foot and the safety overshoe, it can be re-used by multiple visitors. With the new CONTURO system, Festool has reached a new level of edge trimming perfection that was previously unattainable with hand-guided machines. Lawnmower maintenance tips from Victa An annual tune-up will extend the life of your mower while reducing emissions by up to 50%. Whether you’re a confident DIYer, or have very little experience servicing machines, tuning up your lawnmower is not difficult. In just six steps you can tune up your mower yourself. But before starting any work on your mower, refer to your owner’s manual, which provides a complete outline of all you need to know. Step 1: Change the air filter to allow the engine to “breathe” properly. The air filter’s role is to suspend oil droplets within it to filter out dirt and particles. Air filters routinely get clogged with oil and debris, so replacing your filter before each mowing season will help protect the mower’s engine and ensure it runs optimally. Step 2: Most mowers these days use four stroke engines which require oil to be replaced each year, or after 25 hours of use. To remove the old oil, Victa recommend the Briggs & Stratton Oil Removal Kit. Use only four stroke engine oil which can be purchased from most hardware stores or specialist mower retailers. The oil is important as it lubricates and cools the engine. Don’t pour the used oil into the rubbish bin or down the drain. Many auto body shops will dispose of used motor oil, though you might have to pay a small fee. Step 3: Grease all the hinges, wheels and moveable parts to ensure ease of movement. Step 4: Changing the spark plug is one of the easiest ways to promote easy starting of your lawn mower. To avoid stalled-start frustration, replace the spark plug every season. Spark plugs are pre-gapped, so all you need to do is remove the old spark plug and replace it with a new one. Step 5: Worn mower blades tear the grass instead of cutting it. When blunt, visit a specialist mower service centre where they can replace the blades, bolts and nuts.

Festool has equipped the CONTURO with a clever glue-application system that can glue edging made from different materials such as wood, plastic or melamine onto workpieces. The glue is applied accurately to the edge band through a nozzle and guarantees a tight join. The glue dosage is adapted automatically to the pre-set edging height. The display provides all the necessary information: temperature, glue level and the residual edging length – a specification that indicates how many metres of edging can still be glued at the pre-set edging width.

Futuristic bathroom designs When Australia’s SJB Architects were invited to design the Bathroom-of-the-Future for Kohler’s Flagship store in Shanghai, they envisaged a luxurious cocoon of new age materials equipped with the very latest KOHLER innovations. Tristan Wong, SJB architect who spearheaded the design, felt the bathroom of the future could be a global traveller’s retreat and as such located in the hull of a ship or fuselage of a jet. Wong’s vision is of a seamless, folding cocoon of new-age materials. Walls and ceiling fold and merge to conceal lighting, speakers and exhaust fans. The yacht-style timber flooring provides warmth underfoot which complements the long, carbon-fibre vanity that morphs into a day-bed. They made an intentional shift away from the more traditional bathroom materials of tile and stone to the highly versatile Kerlite which is a kind of ceramic porcelain, choosing a combination of white Kerlite for a clean, bright feeling; and a bronze-champagne Kerlite for warmth and contrast. Carbon fibre was the other material used extensively in the design. Chosen for its malleability, strength and waterproof qualities it was the perfect choice for the vanity and day bed. It also has a great aesthetic, with the woven strands of filament visible through the resin. Kohler’s SOK overflowing bath was chosen for its luxury. Designed for two people the SOK offers deep immersion and the option of chroma-therapy and bubble massage. The futuristic Numi toilet, a Bluetooth enabled “hub” offering music, night light, warm air for the feet and automatically opening and closing lid and seat, was placed in the space as much for its sculptural effect as for its versatility. It is complemented by a pair of low slung, rectangular Forefront basins. Karbon taps were chosen as they are constructed in part from carbon fibre and come with a joystick control. To complete the look is the multifunctional electronically controlled shower area equipped with Watertile overhead shower panels and wall mounted body sprays to create an all-enveloping, totally luxurious showering experience.

A device that lifts heavy and awkwardly shaped items for Tradies The Makinex PHT-140 is a universal materials handling solution that enables one-person-operation, to safely lift and load equipment or bulky goods weighing up to 140kg onto benchtops and into vehicles. This product eliminates awkward and dangerous lifts and thus reduces back injury. Made of lightweight aluminium and powered by a 12V rechargeable battery, the PHT140 easily manoeuvres equipment with a lifting eye by the use of a hook attachment. Knowing that not all goods have a lifting eye, Makinex also developed a fork attachment suitable for pallets. Providing a hook and fork attachment allowed for more versatility using the PHT-140. Recently Makinex have designed another two attachments – the strap frame and glass sucker. The strap frame combines with the fork attachment, allowing you to lift almost anything from pot plants, boxes and generators. Terrazzo tiles in a blue composition with white and grey marble chips

A flexible device for getting silicone into hardto-reach spots

Fibonacci Stone’s expertise in developing custom terrazzo finishes for commercial projects is strongly evidenced in Seascape, the Australian company’s latest tile range. Among Seascape’s many qualities is its subtle blue composition, contrasted with muted white and light grey marble aggregate chips. The result is an understated, nevertheless colourful tonal palette.

Applying silicone can often be a fiddly task; and in some hardto-reach areas it’s almost impossible. But with the Aussie-designed and Aussie-made Adapta Flex silicone nozzle [from FIX-A-TAP] tough jobs have been made easier. The Adapta Flex is a silicone nozzle employing a series of ball joints that allow you to bend it to get into even the most hard-to-reach spots; nozzles can be joined together to give you the length that you need to get the job done; and it’s reusable.

DIY wall coverings or have the experts do it Covering walls with a decorative finish is not restricted to standard paint or painted-effects; nor is traditional wallpaper the only other main option. An innovative, extensive range of peeland-stick wallpaper that can also be applied to door and window frames, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, furniture-pieces and appliances has recently been launched in Australia. Made in Korea, 1230mm wide, up to 50m in length, the self-adhesive PVC covering requires no paste, is waterproof and therefore washable, and goes on bubble-free. If you want to apply it to a brick-wall or a tile-covered wall, you should first cover a sheet of MDF or acrylic with the wallpaper and then attach the MDF/acrylic to the wall with appropriate glue such as Liquid Nails. This also gives you the option of changing those covered sheets at a later date for a different look. For example, a marble-design covering would look more realistic as a 50cm wide MDF “column” rather than a covering over an entire wall. You could apply a different patterned covering between marble-columns placed at either ends of the room. There are hundreds of décors to select from comprising: patterns and colours; metallics, including rust-effects; crocodile-skin and other art-leathers; timber-looks and tiles; bricks, stones and marbles; stucco; etc. Prices per square metre range from $29 through to $79. The range is continually being added to by the factories in Korea; and you can even design your own custom-wallpaper utilising favourite scenes, images from your family-album, and own-designs from your creative juices. The product allows you to coordinate interior décors by being able to apply it to appliances, door and window frames, and furniture pieces. door frames. Utilising a heat-gun allows you to “shrink-wrap” the covering over mouldings and odd shapes. Or you can change the look of a kitchen by applying the product to the cabinet doors and contrast this with an alternative design for the splashback. Customised blinds have proven to be a popular application of this state-of-the-art decorative technology, with the UV, solventfree, ink holding its colour for years without fading.
