Can Resolution Audio shine with its amps, too? ast year we had some bad news. Resolution Audio discontinued one of our favourite CD players, the Opus 21. The good news, however, was that it replaced it with the Cantata Music Centre, which went on to win several HFC awards in our 2010 Awards issue. Now we have the follow up, a Cantata amp in a matching box, containing a British circuit design and a less-ismore ethos. The SO suffix indicates power output, making this the least powerful solid-state amplifier we've seen at this price, so what gives?

more powerful version of its predecessor, the Opus 21 s30 amplifier and has achieved this by giving it a larger power supply.

The new amp has four, rather than two T-network capacitors, a mains trans former that's 60 per cent more powerful and a significantly bigger heat sink - the top of the casework is solid aluminium and performs this function. Why does the heat sink change things? Because it allows the FET output transistors to be run at a higher bias and this me ans more power output.

The Cantata 50's speaker terminals are a little different. They feature a third terminal for earthing the amp to the speaker, something that DNM Reson cables are designed for, if not

many loudspeakers. It requires the speaker to have an internal connection to the drive unit baskets, which are electrically floating.

Tannoy has induded earth terminals on some of its speakers, because the earthing idea comes from Japan, where the Scottish company have a strong following.

The speaker terminals are in socket rather than binding post form to keep the metal content down in true DNM style (see Talking Point, right).

Resolution Audio has not gone to the extreme of using Perspex casework, but does have aluminium oxide spacers on the FETs attached to the he at sink, in order to minimise eddy currents that are induced in metal if there is an AC field nearby.

The Cantata is a dass NB integrated with only four line inputs (the Music Centre augments these with digital inputs). These inputs are indicated by a letter that shines through the attractively retro-style dot matrix display alongside the volume level.

We were a little perplexed that the amp on the pramo picture shows a capitalletter, whereas our sample displays a lower case one. But it turns out that you can dedicate one input to the Cantata Music Centre which gives it priority over other inputs and displays as a capital for

that reason. Input selection and volume control can be accessed from the front panel, but the system re mo te is an easier option.

The volume control is a switched resistor network much like that in the Music Centre, but when the two are used together (and we suspect that this is a good idea) the volume control in the player is bypassed. You need to connect the two units with a bus link to achieve fuil functionality.

If there was any justice in the world, then this amp would be on the front of the finest design magazines in the land. It probably also accounts for a fair portion of the final cost, but when you consider its sculptural qualities it's money weil spent.

Build quality is very high throughout, not only is the machining on the sheil

itself state-of-the-art, but the buttons, displayand connections are ail top notch. It's not a big amplifier, width is about average but height and depth are petite, continuing the less-is-more theme. The speaker terminal sockets are deliberately minimalist and, therefore, don't look very dassy, but there is the option of having conventional binding posts, too.

In terms of value, it's not so obvious what you are paying for apart from the casework, until that is you plug in a great source and speakers and spin some choice tunes . Try as we might, we couldn't think of an amplifier under E6,OOO that comes dose to the musical

THE CIRCUIT that lies within the Cantata 50 is by Denis Morecroft, the man whose initials can be found on DNM's very select range of Perspex clad pre and power amps. Morecroft is a sharp cookie who created the T-Network capacitor and worked for NXT in its prime.

TheonlyDNM product you can easily buy is its solid core cables.

Speaker cables are augmented by a third wire for earthing the speaker to the amp.

Hence the third connection on the back of the Cantata.

Another DNM idea is that conductors and connectors should use as little metal as possible because of the signal's potential to induce magnetic fields within them which is said to slow the sound down.

This explains the minimalist speaker terminals used by Resolution Audio.

Musically engaging The Cantata Music Centre made a big impression and so expectations were high for the partnering amp.

As it tumed out they weren't high enough, as this is the most musically engaging amplifier we've heard in a long, long time. It's hard to pin-down exacdy what it does that's so effective but it is incredibly fast; it doesn't increase tempo but it just stops and starts like quicksilver. It also makes most amps sound badly timesmeared and sluggish. This is partly because it's not a powerful-sounding amp, it can deliver good scale, but can't match the room-filling grandeur of real power houses. What it does instead, is let you know precisely

what's going on in the music and if you liked that music before you will be charmed by it through the Cantata. The Opus 21 CD player proved itself to be extremely capable in this regard by providing the signal being amplified, we tried another player for size and quickly went back because this amp is so revealing of a source's capabilities.

On the other end of our Townshend DCT cables was a pair of PMC fact.8 speakers, an 89dB sensitivity floarstander that revelled in the Cantata 50's company.

The way it reflects the original recording is quite startling, the speed factor means that transients can literally make you jump when they strike at the start of a piece.

understand lyrics and to appreciate just how dirty-sounding an electric guitar can be. More sophisticated material has a beauty that is totally beguiling, melodies are placed front and centre and the whole emphasis is 'on the music rather than the sound. Rather a lot of amplifiers work hard to deliver an impressive, rich and powerful sound that somehow manages to put the music in second place, but good sound alone is a novelty that wears thin.

This amp is a tremendously effective communicator of the musical message, once an album is playing it's a struggle to take it off unless the house is on fire or you think of another album that can't wait. A good example of the sound/ music conflict is Wydef Jean's Thug Angels. This is a well produced and substantial modem recording that can sound glorious with its fast bass line and multi-layered vocals. But, on most occasions, we only listen to the first minute and get the idea. Here we stayed for the full six-and-a-half and enjoyed them to the max, despite the lack of gut-chuming bass.

Densely packed BECAUSE rrs a very fast sounding design, the Cantata 50's competition comes from the key players in the pace, rhythm and timing brigade. It's natural prey would, therefore, be Naim's NAC 202/Hi-Cap/ NAP 200 pre/PSU/ power com bo at a similar price point or a Rega Osiris integrated (f6,000).

While it's less powerful than those heavyweights, the NAP 200 offers 70 watts and the Rega 162 watts, it is more neutral and fleet of foot so long as you use a reasonably sensitive loudspeaker.

TheCopland CTA405 would make a very interesting comparison. It has the same power rating, buttotally different approach to circuit design.

DNM's pre/power amplifiers are the only examples of the art that are Iikely to beat the Cantata at its own game, but they are less powerfu~ more expensive and as rare as rocking horsepoop.

The Cantata 50 is a hi-fi product for the music lover rather than the audiophile. It provides a lot of what the hi-fi nut enjoys in its pacey delivery, very low distortion and densely packed detail, but it doesn't set out to wow with scale or power. Rather it concentrates on getting the music to the speakers without damaging its temporal or emotional integrity.

It's also hi-fi far people with an aesthetic understanding and an appreciation of great design. You only have to look at it to realise it is a thing of beauty, far removed from the dumpy boxes we're so familiar with.

Im letzten Jahr ereilte uns eine schlechte Nachricht. Resolution Audio hat einen unserer Lieblings-CD-Player aus dem Programm genommen, den Opus 21. Die gute Nachricht hingegen war, dass er durch das Cantata Music Center ersetzt wurde, das 2010 einige Hi-Fi Choice Auszeichnungen gewann. Inzwischen steht das Folgegerät zur Verfügung, ein Cantata Verstärker mit passendem Gehäuse und britischem Schaltungsdesign, der einem Weniger-ist-mehr-Ethos folgt. Die 50 am Ende bezeichnet die Leistung, sodass dies der Transistorverstärker mit der geringsten Leistung ist, den wir je zu diesem Preis gesehen haben.

Worin liegt also seine Stärke?

Leistung Resolution Audio hat den Cantata 50 so ausgelegt, dass er eine weniger lautsprecherabhängige, stärkere Version seines Vorgängers, des Opus 21 s30 Verstärkers ist. Erreicht wurde dies durch die Ausstattung mit einem grösseren Netzteil. Der neue Verstärker hat vier statt zwei T-Network-Kondensatoren, einen Netztrafo, der 60% leistungsfähiger ist, und einen deutlich grösseren Kühlkörper – die Oberseite des Gehäuses besteht aus massivem Aluminium und übernimmt diese Funktion.

Welchen entscheidenden Einfluss hat der Kühlkörper? Er erlaubt es den FET-Endtransistoren, an einer höheren Speisespannung zu laufen, und das bedeutet mehr Ausgangsleistung.

Die Lautsprecheranschlüsse des Cantata 50 sind ein wenig speziell. Sie weisen einen dritten Anschluss auf, über den der Verstärker am Lautsprecher geerdet wird. DNM Reson Kabel sind hierfür zwar wie geschaffen, allerdings sind nicht wirklich viele Lautsprecher darauf ausgelegt. Der Lautsprecher muss über eine interne Verbindung zu den Treiberkörben verfügen, die ja elektrisch floaten. Tannoy hat Erdungsanschlüsse an einigen Lautsprechern vorgesehen, weil die Idee der Erdung aus Japan kommt, wo das schottische Unternehmen eine grosse Anhängerschaft hat.

Die Lautsprecheranschlüsse sind als Buchsen statt als Schraubklemmen ausgeführt, um die Metallteile im echten DNM-Stil zu halten.

Resolution Audio ist nicht so weit gegangen, ein Plexiglas-Gehäuse zu verwenden, montiert die FETs aber mittels Aluminiumoxid-Distanzscheiben auf dem Kühlkörper, um Wirbelströme zu minimieren, die von benachbarten Wechselstromfeldern im Metall induziert werden.

Der Cantata ist ein Class A/B-Vollverstäker mit nur vier Line-Eingängen (das Music Center ergänzt sie durch Digitaleingänge). Die jeweiligen Eingänge sind durch einen Buchstaben gekennzeichnet, der auf dem attraktiven Punktmatrix-Display im Retro-Stil neben der Lautstärke leuchtet.

Wir waren etwas perplex, dass der Verstärker auf dem Werbebild einen Grossbuchstaben aufweist, während unser Testgerät hier einen Kleinbuchstaben zeigt. Die Erklärung dafür ist, dass man einen Eingang dem Cantata Music

Center zuordnen kann, sodass er gegenüber anderen Eingängen Priorität geniesst und aus diesem Grund als Grossbuchstabe angezeigt wird. Die Eingangswahl und die Lautstärkeregelung kann man auf der Vorderseite des Geräts vornehmen, bequemer ist es aber mit der Fernbedienung. Die Lautstärkeregelung erfolgt über ein geschaltetes Widerstandsnetzwerk wie im Music Center. Aber wenn beide zusammen eingesetzt werden (und wir denken, dass das eine gute Idee ist), wird die Lautstärkeregelung im Player umgangen. Um die volle Funktionalität zu erzielen, müssen die beiden Geräte mit einem Buskabel verbunden werden.

Schönheit Das deutlichste Merkmal dieses Verstärkers ist sein schön gefrästes Gehäuse. Das beeindruckende Industriedesign hebt CantataProdukte meilenweit von anderen Verstärkern ab. Wenn es Gerechtigkeit in der Welt gibt, dann wird dieser Verstärker auf den Titelseiten der feinsten Design-Zeitschriften im Land erscheinen. Wahrscheinlich ist das Design auch für einen ordentlichen Anteil am Endpreis verantwortlich, doch bedenkt man seine skulpturalen Qualitäten, ist das Geld gut angelegt.

Die Fertigungsqualität ist insgesamt sehr hoch; die Verarbeitung des Gehäuses selbst ist „State of the Art“, und auch Tasten, Anzeige und Anschlüsse sind von erster Güte.

Der Verstärker ist nicht gross – seine Breite ist durchschnittlich, seine Höhe und Tiefe jedoch sind gering und setzen somit das Weniger-ist-mehr-Thema fort. Die Lautsprecheranschlüsse sind ganz bewusst minimalistisch und sehen daher nicht sehr nobel aus, aber es gibt als Option auch herkömmliche Schraubanschlüsse.

Was den Wert angeht, ist nicht gleich klar, wofür man eigentlich bezahlt, abgesehen vom Gehäuse – jedenfalls nicht, solange man nicht eine gute Klangquelle und Lautsprecher angeschlossen und einige ausgewählte Musikstücke abgespielt hat. So sehr wir es auch versuchten: Uns fiel kein Verstärker unter £ 6‘000 (1.5-facher Preis) ein, der der klanglichen Transparenz nahe käme, die hier geboten wird, und das entspricht grossem Wert in unserer Bilanz.

Musikalisch bezaubernd Das Cantata Music Center machte einen tollen Eindruck, daher waren die Erwartungen an den dazugehörigen Verstärker hoch.

Wie sich herausstellte, waren sie nicht hoch genug – dies ist der musikalisch bezauberndste Verstärker, den wir seit sehr, sehr langer Zeit gehört haben. Es ist schwer zu sagen, was genau so wirkungsvoll ist, aber er ist unglaublich schnell; er steigert das Tempo nicht, aber er stoppt und startet wieselflink.

Im Vergleich zu diesem klingen die meisten Verstärker zeitlich verschmiert und träge. Das liegt zum Teil daran, dass es kein kraftvoll klingender Verstärker ist – er kann gross abbilden, kann aber nicht mit der raumfüllenden Grösse echter Kraftwerke mitziehen.

Dafür allerdings zeigt er einem genau, was in der Musik passiert, und wenn man eine Musik schon vorher mochte, dann wird man von ihr endgültig eingenommen, wenn man sie über den Cantata hört. Der CD-Player Opus 21, der

das zu verstärkende Signal lieferte, erwies sich in dieser Hinsicht als extrem fähig – wir haben einen anderen CD-Player ausprobiert, aber schnell wieder zu diesem gewechselt, denn dieser Verstärker zeigt so deutlich, wozu eine Klangquelle fähig ist oder nicht.

Am anderen Ende unserer Townshend DCT-Kabel befand sich ein Paar PMC fact.8 Lautsprecher, Standboxen mit einer Empfindlichkeit von 89dB, die in Gesellschaft des Cantata 50 so richtig loslegten.

Die Weise, in der die Originalaufnahme wiedergegeben wird, ist ziemlich erstaunlich, der Geschwindigkeitsfaktor bedeutet, dass Transienten einen im wahrsten Sinne aufspringen lassen, wenn sie am Anfang eines Stücks unerwartet auftreten. Instrumente und Stimmen erscheinen ebenfalls sehr real, Text ist viel leichter zu verstehen und man kann viel besser ermessen, wie schmutzig eine E-Gitarre klingen kann. Anspruchsvolleres Material ist von betörender Schönheit, Melodien befinden sich vorn und in der Mitte; im Vordergrund steht die Musik, nicht nur der Klang. Ziemlich viele Verstärker geben sich einige Mühe, einen beeindruckenden, vollen und kräftigen Klang zu produzieren, dem es irgendwie gelingt, der Musik sekundäre Bedeutung zu geben, aber guter Klang allein ist eine Neuigkeit, die sich abnutzt.

Dieser Verstärker ist ein enorm wirkungsvoller Übermittler der musikalischen Botschaft; wird ein Album erst gespielt, kann man es kaum abstellen, es sei denn, das Haus steht in Flammen oder einem fällt ein anderes Album ein, das nicht länger warten kann. Ein gutes Beispiel für den Konflikt von Klang und Musik ist Wyclef Jeans Thug Angels. Es ist eine gut produzierte und beachtliche moderne Aufnahme, die mit ihrer schnellen Basslinie und dem mehrstimmigem Gesang grandios klingen kann. Doch meistens hören wir uns nur die erste Minute an und erfassen den Grundgedanken. Hier blieben wir die ganzen sechseinhalb Minuten dabei und genossen sie maximal, obwohl der zwerchfellerschütternde Tiefbass fehlte.

Dicht gepackt Der Cantata 50 ist ein HiFi-Produkt, das eher für den Musikliebhaber als für den Audiophilen gemacht ist. Mit seinem temporeichen Klang hat er viel von dem, was dem HiFiEnthusiasten gefällt, sehr geringe Verzerrung und dicht gepackte Details, aber er überwältigt nicht durch Intensität oder Kraft.

Stattdessen konzentriert er sich darauf, die Musik zu den Lautsprechern zu bringen, ohne ihre temporale oder emotionale Integrität zu beeinträchtigen.

Er bietet ausserdem HiFi für Menschen mit ästhetischem Verständnis und einer Wertschätzung für grosses Design. Man muss ihn sich nur ansehen, um zu erkennen, dass er eine Schönheit ist, weit entfernt von den plumpen Kästen, die wir sonst so gewohnt sind.

Dies ist also ein weiterer Sieger von Resolution Audio. Die Messlatte für die Verstärker-Neuheiten des Jahres 2011 wurde gelegt.
