EDITORIAL Ovidio Guaita, Editor-in-Chief

f the wing of an airplane fascinates us, then there are many roads that have something to tell us. Certainly, we cannot cover them all, but it’s worth a try. The old saying “opportunity knocks but once will also be used and abused but encompasses so much good sense. The certainty of not being able to go back and the uncertainty of the future, which we cannot know, should make us reflect on the use and abuse of time. Real luxury today cannot be separated from time. The rich person is the one who, besides the means, also has the time to take advantage of them (a situation not to be taken for granted). There are now so many destinations that are inaccessible or risky: Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Kashmir, Pakistan. In these places where tourism was a source of income, many have had to rethink their lives and their business. Those who have visited these countries in better times took advantage of an opportunity that will be long in coming around again. The wing painted by the orange-red of the sunset swings in the emptiness accentuating the flight. And while the darkness is swallowing it fast, we fasten our belts. A new destination awaits us. We did not permit this one to escape.

Tallinn Estonia

The medieval center of the Estonian capital, ancient Hanseatic port, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Disputed city for its strategic location for trade on the Baltic, it soon endowed itself with powerful fortifications with numerous towers. Today, after the restoration of 2011, when it was the European Capital of Culture, its medieval center reserves pleasant surprises for the visitor.

n a fifteen-minutes limo trip we are outside the hotel. And in just as many minutes on foot, we are in the Old town, inside the histor y of a walled city that UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site. From the extremely contemporar y tower of steel and glass to the brick and stone buildings that have centuries of histor y to tell, a path towards a city that offers a feeling of peace and civilization. But the Swissôtel tower also has a stor y to tell, that of a Swiss chain that is emerging more and more on the international hospitality scene for the quality of its facilities. Here in Tallinn a contemporar y design dominates, not really minimalistic, just enriched a bit by delicate nuances from the place that don’t spoil anything. Definitely a mix of class and style that make this destination an obligator y choice for those who want the best in Tallinn. We tried the European cuisine at the Horisont Restaurant & Bar. Innovative compositions where the freshness of the ingredients plays an essential role. The chef explores the re -interpretation of traditional dishes from different countries showing a preference for lightness. A cosmopolitan cuisine which is highlighted by the cuisine of the Cafe Swiss, with his cheeseburgers and selection of excellent Swiss cheeses ser ved with honey. To conclude with the restaurants, it is always pleasant to stop midafternoon for a per fect cheesecakes at No3 Deli Lounge & Bar, perhaps accompanied by a great Italian cappuccino.

Vilnius Lithuania

Its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 and was built in its present form during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century, when the city was annexed to Russia. Various styles alternate, mainly Baroque but also Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical.

RESORTS MAGAZINE | JULY 2014

The different styles are also due to the settlement of various immigrant communities: Poles, Lithuanians, Germans, Jews and Russians. Each made a contribution to the building styles, traditions and crafts, determining the variety.

T

he style is Neoclassical, Central European, even though in Vilnius we are rather to the north. Moreover, even the cathedral, which stands on the other side of the square is Neoclassical with a curious turret in front crowned by a nice gilded clock. The time of Vilnius. The city is a catalog of the major European styles, in which Baroque is certainly the best represented but Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical are, in fact, not forgotten. The Kempinski style can be recognized at the airport. With Swiss precision the driver is waiting for us at arrivals to take us to the hotel. The beautiful columns of the composite order frame the facade, making it a stylish backdrop for the rites of classy hospitality that takes place inside. Express check-in, welcome fruit and flowers in the room, suitcases that arrive before we can close the door. All details that we know make a difference. But what makes the hotel unique in Vilnius is the location. More central than this would be impossible, and in this way guests will feel part of the city. Not huge, with only 96 rooms and suites, the hotel with all its details is designed to make your stay an experience to remember. The spaces are generous in the suites and everywhere else, and the view is always great. The spa features a sauna and Turkish bath, Jacuzzi, swimming pool and gym. The products for the treatments are by Daniele de Winter. For the restaurant Telegrafas, executive chef Ciaran John Gantly chooses only ingredients at kilometer zero, seasonal and organic. His creations are inspired by the various European traditions, as often happens these days, slightly revisited and with special attention to enhance the flavors. The atmosphere is charming and the service excellent.

he benefits that can be derived by those lucky enough to stay at the Byblos Saint-Tropez are not few. A prestigious Palace where the best of the Mediterranean art de vivre is interwoven with the myth and magic of a unique place. Surrounded by greenery, the Byblos, renowned since the sixties, is composed of an attractive collection of buildings with colorful faรงades and architecture in pure Mediterranean style, which confers volume and various forms to the rooms, making them different one from the other. An ode to rest, yet leaving room for the mundane, to live in a setting of subtle elegance underlined by the judicious combinations of materials. In that corner far from the world, even though only a short walk from the center of Saint-Tropez, there is no shortage of the prerogatives of modern welfare. Prerogatives that are beautifully met by the Sisley Spa, characterized by an authentic room from a Lebanese palace dating back to the seventeenth century transported to Byblos. At the restaurant Le Vincent by Alain Ducasse, chef Maillard Rivea orchestrates a journey through the flavors of the Riviera, ranging from Saint-Tropez to Liguria and also touching Piedmont. Furthermore, he does it with a firm hand and offers a cuisine of land and sea, careful to make the most of the wide range of products. Byblos is a Palace to live in each of its environment. A legendary place in Saint-Tropez - and beyond - where attentive service is made available to a sophisticated clientele that understands hospitality.

he all-encompassing experience that one lives here is intense and steeped in nature, art, tradition and endless attention given to guests who are rewarded for having chosen this unconventional destination. It all started around the karst spring of Su Gologone, whose waters feed directly into the pool and hydro-massage tub, offering a regenerating moment of wellness which, if desired, continues with the treatments at the Spa. The furnishings and art trails, with permanent exhibitions of Sardinian twentieth-century paintings by artists such as Biasi, Melis, Ciusa, Altara as well as collections of ceramics costumes and tapestries, blend with the environment without giving the impression of being in a museum, in fact, quite the opposite. Thanks to the creativity and artistic genius of the owner, Giovanna Palimodde, nothing is static and every year she manages to impress with some new detail. After the terrace of dreams, perfect for astronomy lessons, and the one of wishes for meditation and yoga, here are - as if by magic - the new gazebos for relaxation in perfect privacy. The art workshops stimulate the desire to try one’s hand at painting, drawing, embroidery, ceramics and decorating. Rediscovering a manual ability often lost, nothing better than the bread cove for kneading and baking different types of bread and buns, starting with the carassao and then all the others for special occasions. The path of 50 herbs and

organic garden predispose one for the dining experience, where traditional dishes have been revisited with the most innovative elements. The local wines of Nepente and Cannonau can be tasted with goat and sheep cheeses in a beautiful space designed specifically in juniper wood to enhances the flavors. The suites are all unique with themed environments, bed linen, fabrics with embroider y and decorations made directly in the art workshops. Guests can personalize their holiday-experience with adventure (horseback riding, canoeing, free climbing), meditation (with the yoga center), lessons for drawing, painting and preparing traditional Sardinian cuisine - always in full respect of their desire to detach themselves from the rest of the world, which seems far away. The coast and Cala Gonone are 25 kilometers away, but one feels so welcome and per fectly integrated in this context that there seems to be no need to leave Su Gologone, not even for a few hours.

In charge is Anes Fejzagic, who knows how to convey her professionalism, but also her passion, to staff and guests whose names and preferences she remembers, creating a very special atmosphere. The logo, a butter fly nestled in the beautiful stained Murano glass, reinterpreted by a local craftsman, guides us through the explosion of the color ful bougainvillea and wisteria that matches the white Mediterranean buildings and the Tiffany-color sea and pool. A per fect color balance that binds well with the brilliant skill of the architect and master artist Jean Claude Lesuisse. Mosaics, wrought iron cleverly worked in an artistic manner, original terracotta and suite interiors manually shaped show guests the creative magic in ever y detail of this Small Luxur y Hotel.

Samsonite is a way to travel but most of all a way of life.

The quality and

practicality that have always distinguished Samsonite products over time are also accompanied by elegance, design and lightness dictated by the advent of hand luggage as one’s only baggage. An elegant essentiality made possible by new materials such as polypropylene and Curv technology that underlies the Lite-Locked line. Not even the youngest have been forgotten with the Disney by Samsonite, which represents the main characters of comics and cartoons on suitcases, briefcases and backpacks.
