EDITORIAL Ovidio Guaita, International Editor-in-Chief
Miami Beach
he fragrance of summer. An intense fragrance that recalls holidays and evasion, discoveries and surprises in the guise of a trip. In a fluid and unforeseeable international panorama, where classical destinations become unreachable, and new ones appear in catalogues and on the websites of tour operators, luxury and exclusivity is evermore a discovery to be enjoyed at a slow pace. We know slow food and slow travel, but, perhaps, we have yet to appreciate “slow luxury” fully. We stop in a dated lobby to observe the hurried and distracted travellers. We enjoy the tea we are served with scones and reflect on the destination which is not only an airport and a five-star but a world – a world we cannot afford to miss since tomorrow we may not be able to return there. Let’s enjoy the luxury of getting lost in the streets, the exclusivity of doing it alone mixed in with the locals. Let’s rise on our toes to see and not only observe from the limousine that takes us to the airport. Slow Luxury finally does not exhaust our credit cards (at least not always) but does afford priceless emotions. Go beyond your expectations with Resorts Magazine!

he resort is built on the foundation of an ancient Roman farmstead, later converted into a Benedictine monastery and finally the aristocratic abode of a powerful Sicilian family. The former aristocratic air can still be felt today, walking down the imposing stone staircase that leads to a delightful interior courtyard, where one can find a veritable natural jewel: a centenarian aloe tree. Going along the pebble walkways of the courtyard, one comes to suite 118. It is quite particular in that it is built on two floors in the old rectory of the church of the former monastery. From the neoclassical tower that dominates the baglio, one has a superb view of the Hyblaean lands. The landscape, punctuated by wayfaring trees in blossom, variform shrubs in contrast with the orderly rows of citrus trees, invites guests to indulge in a relaxing round of golf there at the property – 18 holes, 71 pars of 6520 metres, designed by David Mezzacane, president of the Associazione Italiana Architetti Campi da Golf. Hole 6 par 4 offers golfers the thrill of being surrounded by a plantation of prickly pears.

here there was once an austere country house surrounded by prickly pears and palm trees from which arose this building, miraculously transformed into a lavish palace by a British merchant. Later enlarged and enhanced with luxury furnishing, stunning Art Déco stained– glass doors and decorative and architectural elements in Liberty style, the edifice became the most prestigious hotel in all of Palermo. In fact, it came to be known as the “navel of the Kingdom of Italy”. This is indeed the place where the history of the Peninsula was made. Garibaldi put up here when he freed Sicily from the Bourbon dynasty just before handing it over to the Savoy. Notable names of the European culture visiting Italy found accommodation in this hotel, personages such as Wagner, Guy de Maupassant, Renoir and Jules Verne. You can feel the past everywhere: the stylish suites and the elegant rooms; the sumptuous Hall of Mirrors, now a glittering frame for the restaurant. Everything here smells of old times. However, the strong point is the unique position on one of the main streets of the city centre, only a few steps from Teatro Massimo and the treasures of historic capital of kings Ruggiero and Federico II. Last but not least, the varied gastronomic offer which, alongside the international cuisine, boasts traditional dishes including the spectacular courses of fish and the rich renowned Sicilian pastry. Plans for a restoration project aim to enlarge the building with the construction of a spa and an exclusive business lounge so as to meet the needs of the latest contemporary tourist market and bring back the Grand Hotel et des Palmes to its former glory.

It is a perfect combination of adventure and comfort in the savannah. The eight tents of which it is composed unite the elegance of classical interiors to the dark shades of the wood and the warm colours of the land. The verandas with a view are the ideal place to relax while reading or observing a bonfire. Not far away arises Little Chem Chem, a semi-itinerant camp for those who want still greater “African contact with nature. The camp includes a restaurant, however, picnics and moonlight dinners can be organized upon request. There is no spa.
