he history of this complex is thus rich in presences and passages that have enriched its walls, conferring on it a fascination that the recent remodelling has beautifully brought back to full splendour. This gem from the Florentine Renaissance had been the abode of Cardinal Alessandro de’ Medici, archbishop of Florence, and later pope under the name of Leone XI. The 116 rooms and suites are made in part from the Palazzo della Gherardesca and in part from the ex-fifteenth-century Convent of the Sisters of Santa Maria Riparatrice, today called Conventino. The Royal Suite is by far the most stately. It is situated on the noble floor of the palace. Its ceiling and floors are in eighteenth-century Capodimonte ceramic. The other eleven top suites, however, are no less important - each one with its own character. The Michelin-star restaurant Il Palagio, under the supervision of Executive Chef Vito Mollica, proposes a cuisine which takes its inspiration from the Italian and Tuscan tradition. The menu depends on seasonal products furnished by local artisans. The

almost five-hectare park that separates the two properties is the largest green space inside the city walls. The existence of this garden has been documented since the sixteenth century. Right in the centre we find the Spa, the Gym and the Villa Garden Suite, dedicated to those who want maximum privacy. The hotel Spa is an oasis of classic elegance, dominated by the colour white. From the spacious windows one looks out over the garden and the pool. An intense fragrance envelops the guest. The products used for the treatments are those of the historical Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, the origins of which date back to the thirteenth century. On the first floor we find the treatments rooms whereas downstairs are located showers, steam bath and a passage to reach the nearby gym without going outside. The Four Seasons is undoubtedly the best hotel in Florence and a real city resort in the middle of the historic centre. Living there is an occasion to live in history without foregoing anything. Not even the unparalleled service of this prestigious chain.
