The difficult post-colonial history melts along the placid waters of the Zambezi. Here Lusaka is far away. Nature envelops the visitor and new times and rhythms regulate the day. Zambia is an isolated Africa, and it is, perhaps, in this isolation that its charm lies.

SPECIAL | ZAMBIA

estled sinuously along the broad course of the Zambezi, the David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa is more than a surprise. Located in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, it is not far from Livingstone in Zambia and Victoria Falls. An eruption of forms inspired by the natural surroundings awaits guests. The composition of the space plays with local materials and natural dĂŠcor allowing you to discover, from ever y angle, the line of one of the longest rivers in Africa. Among the highlights of the Lodge there are definitely the David Livingstone Spa, a comfortable and intimate corner, and the restaurant Kalai. Located on a large open terrace on the Zambesi, restaurant is characterized by a quality kitchen that, paying attention to detail and ser vice, explores the local tradition and its simple flavors. But the main actor, the Zambezi, you can get to know close up, thanks to the river cruise at sunset. The beautiful Lady Livingstone boat, with its crew ready to offer explanations and delight guests on board in the late afternoon slowly leaves the Lodge behind and begins to ascend the river. The show, intriguing and magical, is provided by the many nuances of the great river, with the hippos and crocodiles that inhabit it. A short and intense journey towards the horizon quickly set ablaze by the most classic of African sunsets. The David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa is a setting favorable to the uniting of the spirit and senses in meditation, a perfect setting to best capture the essence of Africa.

The China you discover in Taipei is a futuristic one. Technological, cultured, productive but still ďŹ rmly tied to tradition. There is a lot of ambition, and the 101 skyscraper is the best example of this. Touring it without a navigator is not easy. It would be better to rely on a tour operator.

t is the 101, the one -o-one, for years the tallest skyscraper in the world, recently surpassed by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The name comes from the number of floors, and its silhouette is visible from ever y corner of the city. To photograph it was not easy, until we got to the 36th floor of our hotel. Wrapped in a sea of light at our feet appeared the Taipei. Tall and solitar y, slender above everything and everyone. There it was, posing for our souvenir photos. The view is not the only reason for choosing this great hotel but it definitely makes a difference. Views that can also be appreciated from the Italian restaurant Marco

Those who prefer a more traditional experience can test chef Ip Chi Kwong and get carried away by the flavors of Cantonese cuisine of the Shang Palace. The extensive menu offers a selection of dishes excellently presented. The flavors are crisp and the ingredients fresh. So view and cuisine. Traditional and innovative, local and Italian. In the shadow of the 101. It may not be the tallest, but it is still very beautiful.

to the best hotel east of Suez flying in”clippers” It is not so far back in time when the first seaplanes of Pan Am crossed the bay of Hong Kong. The passengers could not help but “stopover” at the Peninsula, the anchor of salvation for all the Westerners and then the best hotel east of the Suez. Here flights called clippers come alive again today in the Sky Lounge of the hotel. Here guests arrive by helicopter when they do not wish to climb into the RollsRoyce Phantoms that await at the airport.

At the end of the disembarkation ramp we ďŹ nd a hostess who accompanies us through customs and baggage claim then drops us off at the dark-green Rolls Royce Phantom II awaiting with the trunk open. We are barely aware of having left the plane and already we are in the car checking our email by wiďŹ . The music menu is varied and we choose easy listening, all settled in the cosy silence of the limousine, covered in beige nappa leather and gleaming briarwood. In 40 minutes we turn onto Salisbury Road and get a glimpse of the unmistakable silhouette of the hotel. Awaiting us at the door are the receptionists who will escort us to our suites, where we will complete the check-in formalities, sipping on one of the renowned green teas blended exclusively for The Pen.

high teea in the lobby with live music The Peninsula is a point of reference for the entire city. The most popular rite is the afternoon High Tea. The well-groomed waiter hands us a menu full of teas to choose from. In the center of the table he has placed a multi-layered tray with pastries, scones, finger-sandwiches and chocolates for those who would like to end on a sweet note. Underneath the neoclassical stuccoes in the most famous lobby in the Orient, surrounded by the classical music of the orchestra on the balcony, we participate in this time-honored rite, enjoying the pause in all of its fascination and glamour. 74

If you are thinking of one of these closed-in rooms, a bit claustrophobic, you are off track. The gym at The Peninsula is an oasis of light with a magnificent view of Victoria Habour and the skyline of the island of Hong Kong opposite. Adjacent, the swimming pool – panoramic, of course.

stop at the gym and then aperitif at theFelix Having put our conscience at peace after the hour in the gym, we are now ready for an aperitif. The Felix, the restaurant on the 28th floor, is more glamorous and innovative than one could expect. Designed by Philippe Starck, it is all played out with colored glass, satin-finished steel and beige fabrics. All walls are glass, offering splendid views. A special lift takes us up fast. The lights dim slowly and we arrive. The doors open and we are among the stars. The floors are all illuminated from beneath and the chairs each have a photo of one of Starck’s friends.

After having sipped a superb New Zealand Sauvignon, we are ready for dinner. The menu is on an iPad. We choose the Felix Experience, a sampling menu of surf and turf with accompanying wines. (Represented are Napa Valley, Australia and New Zealand.) The new chef, Yoshiharu Kaji, created this Asiafusion menu which strikes up a conversation between the East and the West.

8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana 3 I talian stars

Umberto Bombana is a creative, without a doubt. A chef who loves to experiment with imagination and courage. One who loves challenges: his advice for the menus of the Crystal Symphony Cruise and the Business and First class of United Airlines is significant. Bombana moved to Hong Kong in 1993 to open the restaurant Tuscany at Hotel Ritz-Carlton. Since then success has followed him up to 2008

AIRWAYS a five-star airline

RESORTS MAGAZINE

Hasrudin Tazep

With a fleet among the youngest in the world, consisting of 137 aircraft including the A380 (and more coming), Qatar Airways presents itself as a player of proven quality. For two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014, Skytrax has awarded it for, among other qualities, the best Business Class. The very one we tested from Kuala Lumpur to Milan in December. No surprises, comfortable cabin and seats that convert into a 180 °bed. Attentive service and menu of absolute interest, signed by Nobu Matsuhisa, along with three other master chefs for French cuisine, Arab and Indian. The new airport in Doha impressed us. Although still in soft opening (planned to be completed this year), the feeling of space, comfort and efficiency is clear. The new Al Mourjan Business Lounge, reserved for premium passengers of the company, is very contemporary and stylish at the same time - just like a five-star resort. Particular attention has been paid to meals also à la carte - and relaxation with a series of spaces with a shower. With a worldwide network of 145 destinations always expanding, Qatar Airways is the ideal carrier for visiting the best resorts in the world.
