mong the new urban styles, “bleisure”, a neologism that combines business and leisure, is found more and more frequently. Short or long weekends at the end of business trips. And why not? We could call it a spread-out holiday, like the hospitality in the renovated villages that do not have a hotel or resort structure but, just the same, behave as if they did. If someone remembers the holidays of mid- August of the last century, like August at the sea followed by a few days in the mountains, it means that they knew a style of travel that has now become archaeological. “Bleisure” does have its advantages: above all cost; the flight for a business meeting and for the weekend is the same. Moreover, you move only once. It is useless to recall, by now, how short on time we all are. Parcelizing leisure also has a psychological and emotional impact on those who can afford it: less stress and better quality of life. On the other hand, while “bleisure” spreads, longer journeys are decreasing more and more ... after all, who still wants to spend three weeks in the meadows of Mongolia?

rmani triumphs. As a designer and as a hotelier. His Armani Hotel Dubai is at the top of our list of accommodations with the best design. It could be argued that it is a city hotel, but Dubai itself is a resort and the Burj Khalifa, where the hotel is situated, has a swimming pool, gardens, fountains and so many activities that a resort is the obvious result. Then there are two classics, the Amanjiwo of Borobudur and the Al Areen Palace in Bahrain. They are in the Middle East and the Far East respectively and hence the most hip locations at present. Places with evocative spaces, which bewitch and make you dream. Places where the spaces are also practical, livable, comfortable and well designed. These are designer resorts, the work of skilled and creative designers and architects who play with the surrounding environment to create masterpieces.

CITY HOTEL | VILNIUS

Radisson Blu Lietuva Vilnius

place to make each meeting unique with a breathtaking view of the beautiful Lithuanian capital. The lobby welcomes us with its recent “restyling. It is impressive, but warm and welcoming. Elisabeth, the receptionist, greets us with great kindness immediately putting us at ease. In a moment we are in the elevator. On the 18th floor, awaiting us is our suite, where a composition of blueberries and strawberries make our arrival even sweeter. After a delicious dinner we go up to the 22nd floor where, sipping a drink at the Sky Bar, you can enjoy a fluorescent sunset. The 360-degree view overlooks the city skyline and its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The city reached its current form during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 13th to the 18th century, when the city was annexed to Russia. Although the city is mainly Baroque it also has various other styles such as Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical. The Lietuva is designed for the most demanding clients and, after a complete remodeling, has just opened new rooms to expand its accommodation capacity. Renovated. Rethought. This Radisson, characterized by the various nuances of its unmistakable Blu, is also enhancing its most important asset, its meeting rooms. These are always in great demand in the effervescent Vilnius, a beautiful city which is opening its arms to the world, and this elegant hotel makes a decisive contribution.

Radisson Blu OlĂźmpia Tallin

he medieval center of the Estonian capital, ancient Hanseatic port, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Today, after the 2011restoration - when it was the European Capital of Culture - its medieval center reserves pleasant surprises for the visitor. Upon our arrival this medieval majesty appears to us with the lights of a special, surreal sunset. We are discovering the day that never ends ... The check-in is quick and, in a moment, we are in the room. The countless nuances of this endless sunset paint every corner, even the most hidden ones, the most intimate ones of our cozy suite. Being on a high floor guarantees an enviable view of the city - and its architecture. Here the architectural styles blend as do the different periods. Over all dominate the medieval walls with their defense towers. Various religions are also represented with different places of worship, as befits a port city. Above all buildings soars the tower of the town hall. From up here time seems to have stopped, as well as the sunset that does not end, the nuances that persist, the reflections on the pool that continue to dazzle. But now it’s late, and before the sunset becomes confused with dawn, we retreat into our comfortable suite.

DESIGN HOTEL | MUNICH

O

Louis Hotel Munich

nly a few steps separate Marienplatz from the Louis Hotel. Very pleasant steps to take since they lead to the enjoyment of a modern hospitality structure which make guests feel immediately part of a warm and extremely welcoming environment. The design, extremely careful to combine tradition and innovation, is certainly one of the highlights of the Hotel. A design that is certainly not an end, given the functionality of its forms. Graceful compositions embellish the rooms, the suites and the common areas as well. The view of the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s famous open-air market, is another plus of the Hotel. The service is in perfect harmony with the high quality of hospitality experienced while staying at the Louis Hotel. This satisfying experience, however, would not be complete without stopping at the Emiko restaurant, which dispenses an intense score in the orchestration of Japanese flavors. The care taken in the presentation of the dishes is added to that of the service to paint a journey of taste which, highlighting the quality of raw materials without penalizing the essence, presents guests with an uncommon intensity. A dual proposal of the dishes on the menu is hence particularly impressive: classic or revisited versions. Of course, you must try both. At the Louis Hotel in Monaco the warmth of design determines the uniqueness of the atmosphere that immediately captures guests. 40

The unique experience offered today by the Bürgenstock Resort has its roots in 1873. The pages that make up the new chapter written by this legend of Swiss hospitality are numerous. So, let’s start by leafing through them, starting with the one composed of the modern Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa, located in a dominant position on Lake Lucerne. Augustus Hotel & Resort

T

Forte dei Marmi

he year was 1926 when Edoardo Agnelli, father of lawyer Gianni, bought the NeoRenaissance Villa Costanza, built by Admiral Morin at the beginning of the twentieth centur y. The constant presence of the Turinese family ushered in a model of summer vacation with the sophisticated and exclusive style that soon characterized the Forte dei Marmi. In 1939 the Pesentis commissioned architect Osvaldo Borsani to build the homonymous rationalist-style villa, where the artistic and literary elite who frequented the area often met. The two styles - modernist the first and revival the second represented a source of inspiration for subsequent realizations, always poised between past and future. In 1953 Augusta Pesenti transformed the villa into a hotel, giving Forte dei Marmi its first real De Luxe structure. Then, one after another, followed the extensions, villas, the building La Nave - designed and furnished as a cruise ship - and the acquisition of Villa Agnelli which - with its exclusive underpass - is connected to the beach, where the original hangar for the Agnelli seaplane has been transformed into the Avgvstvs Beach, with about 80 tents and a heated pool. 54

Shinta Mani Angkor Siem Reap

H

armonious Art Deco forms and colours that visually and emotionally relate to the epic histor y of the Khmer kingdom and to the precepts of wellbeing and luxur y. Shinta Mani Angkor Bensley Collection, the latest Siem Reap creation from visionary American designer Bill Bensley, reaches new heights of refinement and panache in its ten prodigious and secluded residences in the heart of the city, not far from the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat. Nine of the villas are architectonically similar and on twolevels, and one has an extra large pool deck. Stepping through the door, which opens with a massive old-fashioned padlock, you enter the black and white patio with a 30-foot pool and stairs leading to the upper level.

DESIGN HOTEL | SIEM REAP

The sumptuous bed is as striking as the bedroom wall, which starts behind the pool, and is covered with an enormous milky white bas-relief of the rippling folds of the tunic of the great King Jayavarman who built Angkor Wat. The bathroom reaches into the tropical garden, which has a huge stone bathtub and an external shower, and there is a spacious dressing room. On the upper level, framed by bougainville flowers, there is a large day bed on which to relax and, for the more romantic at heart, on which to dream under a star-spangled sky. And then there are the Shinta Mani butlers. Discreet and smiling, these earthbound guardian angels know the city inside out and, from greeting guests at the airport to accompanying them around town in their private tuk-tuk, make sure they want for nothing. Rose petals in the pool? A very dry Martini? A barbeque on the terrace? A suitcase to pack? Your butler is always on hand. Dining beckons in the Kroya Restaurant at the Shinta Mani Angkor, in the Baitong Restaurant at the Shinta Mani Shack, and in the new Elephant Polo Club – with a menu of stunning meats and wines – which are all on the same street. And for the wellbeing of the mind and of the body the fragrant Shinta Mani Spa awaits with relaxing and soothing pampering. 68

Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort El Jadida

ust over an hour from the Casablanca Airport in Morocco, on the Atlantic coast towards El Jadida, lies the Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort, a five-star complex spread over an area of 250 hectares along 7 kilometers of beach. The Resort, which is part of the prestigious group Kerzner, opened less than 10 years ago and offers about 500 rooms and suites. These are equipped with modern comforts and situated in a 5-storey building in Moorish Arabic style. At Mazagan Beach Resort you will be spoiled by the choice of available activities you can dedicate yourself to. Besides golf, there is tennis, bike rides, horse riding along the beach, yoga classes and, of course, the main water sports and windsurfing during the right season. In the large central Riad there is a huge and spectacular swimming pool with water heated even in winter and an excellent pool restaurant and bar, Oasis. But the real plus of the Resort is the 18-hole golf course designed by Gary Player, a glimpse of Scotland on Moroccan land. A true link that winds through the dunes and by the ocean, offering spectacular views, wide and undulating fairways and large difficult greens. The maintenance of the course is excellent, as are all the services related to golf, such as the driving range, the huge putting green, the golf car service and the elegant club house, where George is located. This is one of the 12 restaurants in the complex , which serves, in an elegant and panoramic setting, excellent grilled meat and other culinary specialties. 70

SEASIDE RESORT | EL JADIDA

Another great strength of this Resort is the Food and Beverage that can satisfy all tastes. In addition to the already mentioned George and Oasis, every day guests can opt for the two buffet restaurants Market Place and Olivos, where there is a wide choice of dishes for both lunch and dinner. Breakfast is also served there. Sel de Mer is the restaurant dedicated to fish and seafood specialties that can be chosen from a beautiful display of fresh local products. A “MUST” is the Moroccan restaurant with its refined setting, where typical well-prepared Moroccan dishes are served with professionalism and kindness. In summer you can also take advantage of the restaurant on the beach. There guests will find BBQS and pizza cooked in a wood oven. You can also enjoy excellent Moroccan wines. Do not miss a visit to the resort’s SPA, where you can try one of the typical hamman treatments; there is also a huge area equipped for fitness. Mazagan is an ideal destination for families with children, who can enjoy many activities dedicated to them in the kids club. For those who want to try their luck at the green tables or slot machines, the resort has a large casino open day and night. Despite the many activities available within the complex, guests can take advantage of a shuttle service to visit the nearby El Jadida and the Casablanca Morocco Mall. It is also possible to organize excursions to Rabat, Fez and Marrakesh. 72

he exercise in precision by chef Fabio Macrì in chiselling raw materials to create amazing dishes of rare intensity due to both form and substance makes the Piano35 restaurant shine in the gastronomic scenario. The restaurant is a high-level stage located 150 meters up in the Intesa Sampaolo skyscraper with which Renzo Piano has redesigned the skyline of Turin. The biosphere of exotic and Mediterranean essences surrounds the restaurant’s refined dining room with its international minimalist décor. The venue represents the spearhead of a gastronomic system that also includes the panoramic Piano35 lounge bar and the Chiccotosto snack bar located in the base of the skyscraper. It is a modern environment that is ideal to create a perfect setting for chef Fabio Macrì, who is committed to proposing his cuisine: an admirable synthesis of research and tradition. Along this pathway of taste nothing betrays expectations: the presentation, the aromas, the flavors, the perfection of the cooking and the attention to combinations. Starting from the solid bases of Piedmontese and Italian cuisine, Fabio Macrì, however, reinvents them by grafting a concentrate of innovation punctuated with delicious topical notes. The menu designed by the chef, attentive to seasonality and masterfully supported by service attentive to details, thus accompanies the experience at the Piano35 restaurant in Turin to uniqueness.

Kota Kinabalu is not a new destination, and neither are the two Shangri -las we visit. Yet not everybody comes to this remote corner of Borneo. The beauty of nature and its remoteness add to its charm.

transfer to the resort The Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur (KL for “friends “) lands on time and the driver greets us with a smile. The transfer to the resort gives us some fascinating glimpses of Borneo, though not really unprecedented. The vegetation at this latitude is always a spectacle. Upon arrival a few minutes of waiting at the reception and finally we are in the room. The terrace is a surprise, for its size and the large basin overlooking the ocean and the long beach.

Ritual at CHI, The Spa From the menu we choose Borneo Experience, two and a half hours of attention starting from a coconut scrub and then continuing with a massage with herbs ending with a 30-minute facial. The benefits will be felt for a long time. 126

Japanese, Indian or Italian dinner?

Naan is a celebrated Indian restaurant where chef de cuisine, Shantanu Seth, offers contemporary Indian cuisine. Don’t miss his Butter Chicken. Adjacent is the Kozan Teppan-yaki for a classic Japanese dinner. The guest chooses what, how and when and the staff of chef de cuisine, Ben Lee, cooks it in front of them. A truly interactive and sensorial experience. To avoid forgetting Europe, there is Oceano, the Italian return where the traditional dishes of the Peninsula are prepared with the fresh ingredients of the region, such as the delicious buffalo mozzarella on the next page.

arrival and check-in The transfer from the Shangri- La Rasa Ria takes less than an hour. Situated just south of Kota Kinabalu, the resort is a stone’s throw from the airport without, however, being penalized by the noise. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they receive us, escorting us to the reception. The resort consists of several buildings surrounded by greenery, and the ocean view is always filtered by the trees that frame the turquoise waters.

pool & gym We do not waste time and immediately take advantage of the infinity pool before trying the spacious gym. The large windows overlook the garden, making it extremely pleasant and the workout even harder. 134

aperitive at Sunset Bar & dinner at Peppino Before dinner we stop at the Sunset Bar for a signature mocktail, the Kinabalu Fruit Punch (with mango apple juice and passion fruit syrup). With a 360 ° view of a fiery sunset, the atmosphere is very suggestive. For dinner we chose the Italian restaurant Peppino, several times awarded as one of the best in Malaysia. After a caprese of excellent buffalo mozzarella, we delighted the palate with the ravioli of fish prepared daily with the catch of the day (opposite page) then conclude with a scenic All Chocolate with a final surprise (i.e. it melts revealing a heart of dark chocolate).

The treatments reflect the multi-cultural origins of the region. From among them we choose the Borneo Therapy. It starts with a foot ritual using nutmeg, ginger and red betel leaves (believed to remove negative energy) and continues with a massage executed with the thumb and the palm of the hand.

Indeed, this is a place of absolute elegance. Originating from Lorenz Adlon’s ambitious plan of creating the most sophisticated hotel in all Berlin, nothing is out of place: the clean lines, the stunning marbles, the fine décor, the precious ‘objects d’art’ as well as the balanced cocktail of light colors. All this characterizes the 380 guestrooms and suites, the three presidential suites and the magnificent lobby that evokes the fabulous atmosphere of the Twenties. However, the use of modern technology brings us back to today ’s world: electronic keycard system, consoles in each guestroom which allow maximum comfort.

Poreč

Paolo Gerbaldo

Amid the sea, luxury and culture: Istria. PoreÄ? is the perfect synthesis of a relaxing life at sea, unraveled in all its forms, and cultural wonders.

ISTRIA

DESTINATION | ISTRIA

The Istrian peninsula in Croatia is undoubtedly a place dedicated to the sea, the beauty of the landscape, art and the charm of a Mediterranean summer holiday. Among the symbols of this land, with its wonderful art de vivre, Poreč, lying on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, certainly deserves to be in first position. Poreč is the perfect synthesis of a relaxing life at sea, unraveled in all its forms, and cultural wonders. The legacy of a long history is clearly visible in the rich artistic and architectural heritage of Poreč. Strolling leisurely through the narrow streets of the old town, you will come to the large complex of the Euphrasian Basilica a very important example of Byzantine art whose initial nucleus dates back to the 5th century and which is also UNESCO patrimony. Then skirting the remaining stretches of the ancient Venetian walls, you will discover other enchanting corners of the peninsula that the historic center of Poreč encloses. The intense experience ends - during beautiful summer evenings - on the seafront enjoying the fish dishes offered by the many restaurants such as the welcoming Sveti Nikola. An invitation to the sweetness of living is the Isabella Resort, the flagship address of the Valamar group, strategically positioned on the small island of Sveti Nikola. Bright suites, in the Miramare and Castle parts, and villas immersed in the large Mediterranean garden welcome guests who are immediately captivated by the unique view of the sea. Exemplary for their composition are the dishes on the menu of the Miramare and Spinnaker restaurants, the latter located on the seafront of Poreč. The proposals, starting from first-rate ingredients, do, in fact, enhance Istrian cuisine by making the dishes a successful synthesis of land sea. At sunset the sun reflects on the Istrian Adriatic, giving the lucky guests of Poreč the idea of living an idyllic suspended moment.
