O

nce upon a time there were trains and ships. Those who traveled from the nineteenth century until the sixties did not have much choice but had to have a lot of money and time. Furthermore, those who were fortunate enough to have one, usually had the other as well. Today, however, you cannot ignore the plane, and those very few people who are still afraid to get off the ground (it seems incredible, but I know at least a couple) are imprisoned between Europe and the Mediterranean. Air links determine the success of a destination. Perhaps someone still remembers the flow of Italians to Bali when in the nineties there was a direct link between Rome and Denpasar with Garuda. There the memory lingers on. Well, the fates and evolution of airlines can significantly affect the economy of entire regions. Many are those who will not have missed the golden bridges offered to Ryanair to reach some southern Italian destinations snubbed by Alitalia. By the way, regarding Alitalia and its endless lives - perpetually on the verge of bankruptcy, yet always saved and always on sale - maybe someone should decide to unplug. Then, perhaps, we would see the birth of a low-cost for short and medium range routes or, better still, a Rolls-Royce of the skies, flag-ship of Italian taste, spokesman of design and Italian cuisine, emblem of that lifestyle that the world envies. othing is left to chance in the concept of hospitality dispensed by Roomers of Baden-Baden. In the enchanting German spa town, architect and designer Piero Lissoni has given shape to the quintessence of the conceptual hotel and design. Behind the façade which, with plays of shapes and colors, he refers back to avant-garde painting; guests immediately come into contact with spaces that superbly synthesize multi-functionality with intimacy. Right from the large entrance hall unusual perspectives, lively environments with a great scenographic effect, surprising touches of dÊcor that recall the history and traditions of the Black Forest all become apparent. Plays of light and forms of great intensity immediately catch the eye. The lobby bathrooms, for example, should not be missed. The style of welcoming is chic and informal. The overall atmosphere of Roomers is decidedly propitious in satisfying all needs starting from that of relaxation. Black granite envelops the serenity of the sensory experience offered by the spa overlooking Baden-Baden and the Black Forest. A sophisticated social space is the rooftop bar. In this play of shapes with which Piero Lissoni has given life to the multiple universes of Roomers, the gastronomic one, designed by the Moriki restaurant, takes on the strong gastronomic suggestions of modern PanAsian cuisine. nce you have entered the revolving door, a universe of elegance that combines different architectural styles slowly emerges.. This old residence, designed in 1863 for the Prince of Württemberg by the architect Arnold Zanetti, was later transformed into a hotel opened to guests on 28 April 1873. ven before opening the precious satin box, the nose is gratified by an intense scent of chocolate. After that, the appearance of the cake – square - amazes us until we decide to break the spell and cut a slice. At first it is not clear how to cut it (here the traditional triangular slice is not the right solution) but with aesthetic doubts dispelled and at the first taste, it is the taste of marzipan that captures our attention; then, little by little, chocolate enriches the tasting until we reach the layered wafer that binds the various ingredients. Even today, the cake, invented for the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, on the occasion of the inaugural dinner of the hotel in 1873, surprises for its refined composition. The original version is now enriched with two variants: one raspberry and the other orange. His sole aim: to have his own business and create a brand of products to be sold carrying his name. The great ability in the art of making leavened products has made Alfonso Pepe’s laboratory a milestone in the local community and among the master bakers in Italy. An obligatory “pit stop” for whoever finds himself around Campania, especially on the Amalfi coast. All the fine products of nature and tradition around them are part of the pastry created by Alfonso. Take, for example, the one with limoncello or that with white figs. The secret to the perfect panettone is in the leavening, and Alfonso is certainly aware of that.
