I am genuinely excited by the many projects we are leading across the country in partnership with Governments and industry, as together we seek to transform the waste and recycling industry in Australia by elevating the recognition of waste as a valuable resource. It’s an ethos that has formed the very backbone of ResourceCo for in excess of 30 years through our steadfast focus on adding value to waste materials otherwise destined for landfill, export, or stockpiling. That commitment has seen us invest in growth projects across the country this year, including a new tyre recycling plant at Erskine Park in Sydney that will see thousands of tonnes of waste tyres repurposed into crumbed product for use in road construction and other manufactured rubber products. We are also very pleased to be partnering with the mining sector in providing much needed turnkey solutions which drive strong environmental outcomes for end-of-life, off-the-road mine site tyres and conveyor belts.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING D I R E CTO R This year has certainly delivered many challenges for businesses across Australia, including ResourceCo, but amidst the uncertainty I have been very proud of the way our teams have stepped up to the plate in the continued delivery of essential services across Australia and Asia. Together we have achieved some fantastic results. As a company we are as committed as ever to playing our role in backing economic growth and delivering better environmental outcomes by investing in leading infrastructure to build our capacity and capability across our broad spectrum of resource recovery and remanufacturing operations.

While in Brisbane, we are excited to be embarking on construction of a new world-class Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) which will enable recovered timber and other dry construction waste to be used as a fuel source, reducing the reliance of fossil fuels, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. As the narrative around a carbon economy and the quest to reach net zero by 2050 pleasingly increases, it is actions that will always speak louder than words. As a pioneer in Australia’s carbon abatement program, ResourceCo is proud to be assisting heavy industry in delivering better environmental outcomes through the sale of carbon abatement credits that add value for both customers and the communities in which they operate. As we look ahead with confidence, ResourceCo has also realigned its business pillars to focus on delivering its growth ambitions. Our five business pillars of tyre recycling, material solutions, waste & recycling, energy and shared services will form the focus of our operations going forward as we seek to create jobs, build the economy, support greener supply chains, and ultimately play our part in progressing Australia’s circular economy. We look forward to sharing those outcomes with you.

RESOURCECO’S WORK IN PIONEERING C A R B O N A B AT E M E N T I N A U S T R A L I A A N D HELPING TO DRIVE THE TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY HAS NEVER BEEN M O R E I M P O R TA N T T H A N N O W.

Two significant pieces of research released in recent weeks demonstrate there is still so much more to be done to combat climate change and escalate a transition to ‘clean’ energy. Projections from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report suggests we are facing worse fires, longer droughts, and more severe floods unless substantially more is done. The most comprehensive climate report ever released, found the earth could be just ten years from heating by more than 1.5 degrees celsius. This coupled with a report from The Australia Institute which ranked our nation poorly for our transition to clean energy when compared with 22 other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries only serves to reinforce the importance of the need to drive more rapid change. ResourceCo Energy CEO Henry Anning says that while there has been growth in solar and wind energy, energyfrom-waste remains a relatively untapped opportunity. “For energy hungry manufacturers, there is so much upside to encouraging a transition to a viable, cost-effective and more environmentally sound option such as heat or electricity from Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). “We need to continue to work with the industrial sector to further encourage alternative heat solutions to gas, coal and electricity, that are not only renewable but also divert waste from landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Change can only occur if we all work in partnership to address the challenges we can’t afford to ignore and so we will continue to play our role in encouraging the use of ‘energy-from-waste’ as a sensible option for baseload renewable energy.” ResourceCo also remains committed to continuing its work of the last 30 years in assisting companies to achieve carbon neutral status through the provision of carbon abatement credits. “As a natural extension of ResourceCo’s core environmental and recycling platforms, we are proud of our work in progressing a carbon economy by delivering carbon abatement solutions for end use by Australian businesses.”

IN A WIN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, R M S H E L P S B R E AT H E N E W L I F E I N T O LANGWARRIN SAND QUARRY ResourceCo Material Solutions (RMS) is proud to have clocked up the significant milestone of having re-purposed over 2 million tonnes of fill material to the Langwarrin sand quarry rehabilitation project. In a win-win for its clients and the environment, RMS has been able to re-use significant volumes of material generated by a range of key Victorian infrastructure projects. CEO Material Solutions Steve Harrsion says the business is delighted to be providing an endto-end solution in the removal and repurposing of soil material generated by a range of projects across Victoria’s southeast. Those include the Southern Program Alliance, the Western Program Alliance and the Dandenong 9 – all part of the Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP), as well as the Monash Widening (Stage 2). “We are able to provide a complete material removal, transport and disposal service for these significant construction projects, while at the same time actively contributing to the rehabilitation of another site.

“We pride ourselves on building solid relationships that deliver strong social and environmental outcomes, while ensuring cost-effective solutions for all our clients.” RMS is backed by industry leading risk management systems, including real-time material tracking and full material chain of custody, as well as having access to a transport fleet of more than 1000 vehicles. “We’re able to tailor solutions to our clients’ varying needs and capacity, whether that’s for the government, a tier 1 company or a private company seeking solutions to their fill material disposal needs,” Steve says. “As Australia progresses its infrastructure boom requiring tunnelling and deep excavation, we are increasingly diverting and repurposing millions of tonnes of soil.” “We’re effectively adding value to otherwise discarded materials and that’s a great result in terms of progressing circular outcomes.”

Steve says the company is particularly proud of its partnership with Hanson at the Langwarrin sand quarry, which has seen it make a substantial contribution to the ongoing rehabilitation of the site – to date an estimated 20% of the total fill volume required as part of rehabilitation works.

OUR DRIVING FO R C E PA U L J E N K I N S O N Strategic Development and Business Improvement Manager

Tell us a little bit about yourself, Paul. What did you do before you came to ResourceCo? I started my professional career as an apprentice in the aluminium industry, but after getting all my qualifications I travelled the world helping to manage some exciting projects. I completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering and went into the mining sector, providing project management and operational, maintenance and shutdown management for BHP. I was enticed into the recycling and waste to energy sector by Suez, where we worked with ResourceCo to grow the Adelaide alternative fuel business as an efficient processing facility. After a brief hiatus back at BHP I was recently given the opportunity to join the ResourceCo team and continue in the resource recovery industry. How do you explain your role at ResourceCo to people you’ve just met? My current role is all about helping ResourceCo with strategic growth and business development. I am helping to deliver the largest capital investment and growth projects that the ResourceCo group has ever embarked upon. Amazing! What prompted you to join us here at ResourceCo? I’ve worked for large multinationals

creating large carbon footprints, and it’s exciting to now be working with a company that produces opportunities to dramatically offset that footprint. What’s a challenge you’ve recently faced at ResourceCo? Taking the alternative fuel business in NSW and helping them improve the operational efficiency has been challenging. I guess this part of history is still in the making. What’s something you’ve achieved recently at ResourceCo? It’s been rewarding for me to see ResourceCo move forward, even in the short time I’ve been here. Knowing that I am now involved in this success is great. Quick fire round! Describe ResourceCo in 3 words. Inclusive, progressive, challenging. What’s next for ResourceCo and the wider resource recovery industry? I’m excited about the role that ResourceCo has to play in the future of the resource recovery industry. Government funding coupled with ResourceCo’s commitment to growth means it’s an incredible time to be backing a circular economy.

REGINA PHILLIPS Group Accountant and Executive Assistant to Managing Director Simon Brown

Tell us a little bit about yourself, Regina. How long have you been a part of the ResourceCo team? I joined ResourceCo way back in 1999. Before that, I held a senior role in finance at a rubber manufacturing organisation. When I first came to ResourceCo I was an Office Manager responsible for all payroll functions, accounts payable and receivable, and administration. I was also the first female to join the organisation! Now, I’m the ResourceCo Group Accountant and EA to our Managing Director, Simon. How would you explain your role at ResourceCo to someone you’ve just met? I’ve had many different responsibilities over the years here at ResourceCo. These days you can find me supporting the finance team, processing payrolls, filing BAS returns, payroll tax and work cover, and verifying the accounts off all companies under the ResourceCo umbrella. I also keep Simon on track with his dayto-day tasks. You’ve been an important part of ResourceCo now for over twenty years, what’s stood out to you during your time here? I’ve witnessed some amazing moments here. Like when ResourceCo won the Telstra Small Business of

the Year Awards and attending the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards which Simon won. The team here is constantly striving for better which has helped ResourceCo become what it is today. How have you challenged yourself at ResourceCo? Keeping up with change is a challenge! With growth comes change and that in itself is a real and exciting challenge. What’s something you’ve achieved recently at ResourceCo? My career has been absolutely rewarding. Meeting new people and collaborating with them to make real progress is something I love. Quick fire round! Describe ResourceCo in 3 words. This was so long ago, so I don’t think I could put it in just 3 words. But I have always loved coming to work. Every day brings something new. What does working in the resource recovery industry mean to you? I’m very proud to be working for a company that’s preserving limited resources for future generations. The focus beyond profit is just great to see.

We are super excited to be expanding our footprint and capabilities across Australia to help drive better environmental outcomes on the back of the upcoming ban on the export of whole-baled tyres in December this year. We are particularly delighted to be partnering the NSW and Federal Governments with the securing of a further $2.9 million in funding as Stage 2 to support a $5.9 million addition to the recently completed Stage 1 of a new plant at Erskine Park. The new addition will allow further broadening of the value added products made in our NSW facilities and further support to COAG ban on the export of whole baled tyres. Tyrecycle is also gearing up for further expansion to its footprint in Perth, and the Pilbara this year with support coming from the Recycling Modernisation Fund.

We’re establishing a new plant in Port Hedland under the management of Kariyarra Tyrecycle (KTC) to provide an end-to-end solution for the mining sector, enabling the processing off-the-road (OTR) mining tyres and conveyor belts. We’re also delighted to be expanding our existing Perth plant to enhance our capabilities and create greater environmental impact. Tyrecycle CEO Jim Fairweather says funding from both State and Federal Governments will be transformational in delivering strong environmental outcomes, while also providing an economic and jobs boost. “We’re delighted to be partnering with Government to embrace waste as a resource instead of a problem and will continue to drive innovative solutions for progressing Australia’s transition to a circular economy.” “It demonstrates a real confidence in the innovation of the resource recovery sector and its commitment to driving sustainable solutions to long-standing waste management issues.” 13

Investment in the new plant, which follows the Australian ban on the export of unprocessed waste glass, will enable the repurposing of 30,000 tonnes of waste glass per year into sustainable construction materials. In spearheading a domestic-led solution to glass waste, ResourceCo has invested in cutting-edge technology which overcomes previous hurdles associated with co-mingled glass from household or commercial sites. “This investment in new infrastructure could ultimately see tens of thousands of tonnes of waste glass repurposed into construction materials each year,” says ResourceCo CEO of Waste & Recycling, Brad Lemmon. “In the past, the poor quality of this waste glass and the relatively low price received for this material has been an issue in kerbside collection, recycling, sorting and sale and we’re proud to be playing a part in driving a sustainable solution.” The resulting product has already been road tested by ResourceCo in a partnership with the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

Over 8.5 tonnes of glass was repurposed to replace sand as a base for roads and footpaths, as part of the Regency to Pym construction project (R2P). “The use of 5% glass as a virgin aggregate replacement was a first for South Australia and is a significant initiative in paving the way for the use of more recycled materials in roads.” ResourceCo is in advanced discussions with many of South Australia’s Material Recovery facilities to take their glass waste and continues to work with DIT on specifications for use of glass in their road base on major projects. “We are investing a significant amount of time and resources to work closely with our partners to achieve the best results – both economically and environmentally. It’s about backing leadership in sustainability and building progressive and environmentally conscious partnerships.” Construction of the new plant will begin later this year and is already regarded as a huge opportunity for Governments, the construction industry, and the recycling sector to reset the benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development in South Australia. 17

ResourceCo staff in NSW have rallied behind the hope of a cancer-free future this winter, raising much needed funds and awareness for both Cancer Council SA and The Mark Hughes Foundation. Kicking off the fundraising efforts was Operations Support Officer, Simone Andrew, who hosted a Biggest Morning Tea for our Adelaide office in June. Inspired by a colleagues battle with cancer, Simone organised an impressive array of treats and refreshments for staff to enjoy, joining over 20,000 inspiring morning tea hosts across South Australia. Events such as Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea go a long way in ensuring cancer-based research, support and prevention programs are able to continue right across Australia. Funds raised at these events have so far lent a hand in raising cancer survival rates to 69%, delivering hope and support to the thousands of Australians diagnosed each year. Together, the Adelaide office raised over $1,800 for Cancer Council SA, a sum that can provide 1,159 kids with a SunSmart education, support 15 days of worldclass cancer research, or connect 28 Australians to trained cancer nurses via the Cancer Council’s helpline.

Launched in 2014, The Mark Hughes Foundation has set out to improve the support and research available for Australians diagnosed with brain cancer. In a nod to the beanies that brain cancer patients often wear to hide their scars, the annual Beanie for Brain Cancer campaign has seen over 700,000 beanies sold to date, and $4.1 million dollars raised this year alone. We’re extremely proud of our team in NSW for donning these life-saving beanies and joining an effort that has uncovered ground-breaking approaches to brain cancer treatment including immunotherapy, novel combination therapies and imaging. A big congratulations are in order for every ResourceCo team member who raised funds, donated to or spread awareness for both the Cancer Council SA and The Mark Hughes Foundation over the past few months. Community is at the heart of everything we do at ResourceCo, so it’s great to be able to get involved and give back to those in need.

As head office came together for the Biggest Morning Tea, Tyrecycle teams in NSW rugged up against the cold weather in support of The Mark Hughes Foundation. 19
