W
hen I decided to move to Costa Rica with my family a few years ago I had no idea what would be waiting for us in this nature-loving country. Naturally, we had a business plan that proved to work well enough to make a living from. However, I always kept an open mind and all of my senses alert for any opportunity to make a child’s dream come true: to be an explorer of nature and to discover the wild side of this planet! What place could be better for this than a country highly praised for its nature, like Costa Rica! It all started when a tour operator, mainly because of my language skills, asked me if I could help them out by going as a guide with a group that was touring the country. Previously having done something similar and only on rare occasions I enthusiastically accepted immediately. Maybe too quickly! I was actually not supposed to go explore the country, but rather to show it to the travelers!

C uando decidimos mudarnos a Costa Rica con mi familia hace algunos años, no tenía ni idea de lo que podría estar esperándonos en este país amante de la naturaleza. Obviamente veníamos con un plan de negocios que funcionó lo suficientemente bien como para mantenernos, sin embargo yo siempre mantuve una mente abierta y los sentidos alerta a cualquier oportunidad. Yo esperaba realizar mi sueño de niño: Ser un explorador de la naturaleza y descubrir el lado salvaje del planeta! Y que mejor lugar que un país tan reconocido por su exuberante naturaleza como lo es Costa Rica!
Todo comenzó cuando un operador de tours, debido a mis habilidades lingüísticas, me pidió que lo ayudara como guía con un grupo que estaba recorriendo el país. Habiendo hecho esto antes en muy pocas ocasiones, con gran entusiasmo me apure a aceptar. Quizás demasiado rápido! En realidad se suponía que yo solo quería ver el país, pero resulto que en vez de eso, también se lo iba a enseñar a los turistas!

“I have all the necessary requirements, I told myself, it must be ok. After all, they trust me...?” A scientific approach of reading about the local flora and fauna was inevitable, however I quickly became completely overwhelmed by the incredible mass of information it takes to describe this country’s nature. Without going into too much detail, there are more species of birds than you might find in North America or the whole of Europe. The guaria morada - the national flower - is just one of approximately 1,400 species of orchids in the country. There are thousands of bugs and critters, loads of mammals, reptiles, amphibians- and all in such a small geographic area...
“Yo reúno todos los requisitos, pensé. No debe ser un problema. Al fin, ellos confían en mi....?” Un acercamiento científico leyendo sobre la flora y la fauna local me fue inevitable, pero rápidamente me sentí abrumado por la increíble cantidad de información que se requiere para describir la naturaleza de este país, aún sin entrar en mucho detalle. Aquí hay más especies de pájaros de los que se pueden encontrar en Norte América o en toda Europa. La guaria morada -la flor nacional- es solo una entre aproximadamente 1,400 especies de orquídeas. Hay miles de insectos y pequeñas criaturas, montones de mamíferos, reptiles, anfibios y todos en un espacio tan pequeño!!!

Did you know that sloths, armadillos and anteaters are in the same family because of some weird backbone they have in common; that if we had the capabilities of a tiny humming bird we would all have super powers; that the beautiful Strangler Fichus is actually a brute killer tree; that the male Golden-orb spider lives like a parasite in the female’s “golden net” or that… the Cordillera of Talamanca was the first piece of land piercing the surface of the ocean when the Panamanian land bridge between South and North America was formed? …And the list is never ending! With little time to get prepared I had to find another solution very quickly. A field library would offer back up for the proper identification since learning about even the most common and obvious animals and plants all at once was daunting, if not impossible. However, the previously well working strategy of using my senses and being curious would actually be the most successful tool for nature observation.

Sabia que los perezosos, los armadillos y los osos hormigueros están en la misma familia gracias a un extraño hueso vertebral que conservan en común; que el precioso ficus estrangulador es realmente un brutal asesino de árboles; que el macho de la araña de seda dorada (g.nephila) vive como un parásito en la “telaraña brillante” de la hembra o que la Cordillera de Talamanca fue el primer trozo de tierra que irrumpió de la superficie del océano cuando el puente terrestre entre Sur y Norteamérica se formó? ... y la lista es interminable! Con muy poco tiempo para prepararme tenía que encontrar una solución rápida: Una biblioteca de campo ofrecería un respaldo para la identificación adecuada ya que aprender aunque fuera únicamente sobre los animales y plantas más comunes y obvios, todo de una vez, es imposible. Sin embargo, usar a fondo mis sentidos y mi curiosidad por la observación, sería mi estrategia más exitosa y mi mejor herramienta al mostrar y compartir la naturaleza.
It’s amazing how much more pleasurable it is to hike through the forest, up the volcanoes, along the beaches and through the night when you can hear, see, smell and sometimes even feel and taste your surroundings. One does not need much practice to learn to associate a sound, an odor, a texture or a shape with an animal or plant, even if the odor is not pleasant! I have been bit by army ants, enchanted by the odor of a cannon ball tree, delighted by fresh cacao seeds, overcome by the sight of my first quetzal and finally fallen asleep at night to the sounds of the forest and the ocean. If you do not constrain yourself to specific expectations, you actually will discover and experience much more than you had anticipated and will realize the beauty and magnificence of nature. Ever since my first tour 3 years ago, I have enjoyed traveling through this country, encouraging visitors to do the same and to magnify their experience by opening their senses, knowing that there will be great new things for them to discover. It is very rewarding to see tourists happy and excited at what they were able to discover for themselves, leaving Costa Rica full of fantastic memories like the story of the great blue heron who would not want to share his fish with the crocodile at first, but then... suddenly...
Es asombroso cuanto más agradable se hace el caminar por el bosque, subir un volcán, caminar por las playas o a través de la noche, cuando uno puede escuchar, ver, oler y a veces hasta sentir y probar su entorno. No se necesita demasiada práctica para aprender a asociar un sonido, un olor, una textura o forma con un animal o planta, aún cuando el olor sea desagradable! He sido picado por hormigas soldado, encantado por el olor de la flor de los Coco de Mono (Couroupita guianensis) , fascinado por las semillas frescas de cacao, impresionado por mi primer avistamiento de un quetzal y finalmente, me he quedado dormido muchas noche arrullado por los sonidos del bosque o del mar. Si usted no se limita a expectativas específicas, podrá descubrir y disfrutar mucho más que lo que anticipaba y descubrir así la real belleza y magnificencia oculta de la naturaleza. Desde mi primer tour hace 3 años, he disfrutado recorridos por el todo el país, animando a los visitantes a hacer lo mismo y abrir todos sus sentidos, para que sus experiencias sean más intensas y más abiertas hacia todas las cosas fantásticas que hay por descubrir. Es muy agradable ver a los turistas felices y excitados con lo que han logrado develar por si mismos y verlos llevarse con ellos increíbles recuerdos, como la historia de aquella gran garza azul que al principio no quería compartir el pescado con el cocodrilo, pero entonces... inesperadamente...

C uando un grupo de artistas en una comunidad decide aliarse… se nota.
This is what’s happening in Playas del Coco, painters from the area have come together with a goal to inundate the community with art…
Eso es lo que está pasando en Playas del Coco, donde los artistas plásticos del área se han reunido para lanzarse a llenar de arte esta comunidad…
It all started in the mind of Carlos Hiller who decided to summon other artists from the area to put on a group art show at which the artists not only exhibited their individual work, but also creations resulting from collaboration from the group.
Todo comenzó en la mente de Carlos Hiller, que decidió convocar a otros artistas locales para montar una muestra de arte grupal en que no solo se mostrara las obras individuales de cada uno, sino también creaciones colectivas entre ellos.
And so “Ocean on Canvas” was born, in which Hiller, renowned painter of the underwater realism, made interventions on the work of 5 other artists, resulting in a shower of color, styles and messages…
Así nació “Ocean on Canvas” ( Mar sobre Tela), en la que Hiller, reconocido pintor de realismo subacuatico, realizó intervenciones sobre obras de otros 5 artistas, dando como resultado una lluvia de color, estilos y mensajes…
The result of this ‘’experiment” was unveiled on a December evening where an exhibit was put on display at the Pacifico Village. Here the approximately 200 attendees were able to enjoy a cosmopolitan night of “Sushi, Art and Wine”. The exhibit has since been moved to the Hidden Garden near the Liberia Airport, where one can also enjoy numerous other works displayed in the permanent gallery at this location. Los resultados de este “experimento” fueron revelados en una tarde de diciembre, en una muestra montada en Pacifico Village, donde los casi 200 asistentes pudieron disfrutar de una cosmopolita noche de “Sushi, Art and Wine”. La muestra, ahora se ha movido a Hidden Garden, en las cercanías del aeropuerto de Liberia, donde se puede disfrutar también de otras obras presentes en la galería permanente del lugar. 13

But these artists are barely getting started with their creative surprises. This January 30th the color will hit the streets. Art will fill the entrances to the sandy beaches of Playas del Coco, where a series of concrete sewer pipes placed by the Municipality to prevent vehicles from entering the beach, will be transformed by a collective effort of the 20 artists into ornamental planters and works of art which henceforth will offer a colorful welcome to those that enter the sands of this community. In the “Sewer Pipe Parade”, organized by an alliance of a large number of businesses and citizens, the art will not only be in colors but also in sounds as the closing of the event will be a free open air concert (at the 4th entrance to the beach). In addition there will be circus shows, a kite festival, a beach cleaning and many other attractions, all within the framework of the Playas del Coco Civic Fiestas, thus expanding the experience for the attendees to this great carnival.
Pero estos artistas recién comienzan a hacer de las suyas, pues este 30 de enero, el color saldrá a las calles para llenar de arte las entradas a las arenas de Playas del Coco, donde una serie de tubos de concreto puestos por la Municipalidad para evitar el ingreso de vehículos a la playa, serán transformados por un colectivo de 20 artistas en macetas ornamentales y en obras de arte, que a partir de ahora darán una colorida bienvenida a quienes ingresen a las arenas de esta comunidad. no solo será en colores, sino también en sonidos, pues el cierre del evento será con un concierto gratuito al aire libre (en la 4ta entrada a la playa). Además habrá show circenses, un festival de papalotes, una limpieza de playas y muchos otros atractivos, todo enmarcado dentro de las Fiestas Cívicas Playas del Coco, ampliando así la experiencia para los asistentes a este gran carnaval. Ya lo sabe, en el Coco, el arte anda suelto y los colores han venido para quedarse y expandirse, pues ahora los artistas del área son un equipo vivo que promete seguir haciendo de las suyas y seguir poniéndole colores a la vida… Con que nos irán a salir la próxima vez?

T
he sun rises, illuminating a dark place where the plants compete for the rays of light that filter through. Meanwhile, the screams of the howler monkeys announce the beginning of our musical ceremony. Each one of my steps marks the time…tap tap, tap tap… Accompanying the core of the melody are low and long notes formed by the wind as it blows through the hollow trunks of the strangling fichus trees. Hollows formed in the place where the now lifeless trees used to subsist. The melancholic and uncertain fog floats in the distance and awaits the first sounds prior to beginning its sensuous dance. As I walk, I am taking the time to listen. Nothing is pressing... Everything must flow.

l sol amanece, iluminando un lugar oscuro donde las plantas compiten por los flujos de luz. Mientras tanto, los gritos de los monos aulladores anuncian el principio de nuestra ceremonia musical. Cada uno de mis pasos mide el tiempo, tam tam, tam tam… Acompañando las bases de la melodía, están las bajas y largas notas formadas por el viento que sopla en los huecos de los troncos de los ficus estranguladores, huecos dejados por los árboles que algunas vez los hospedaron. La bruma melancólica e incierta flota a lo lejos y esperan los primeros sonidos para echarse a bailar sensualmente. Estoy caminando y tomando mi tiempo para escuchar. Nada urge… Todo debe fluir. Tam tam, tic tic… El agua de la lluvia recogida por la copa de los altos árboles es ahora proyectada por el viento y gotea finamente sobre cada uno de los elementos de la naturaleza.
Tap tap, tic,tic…The rainwater collected by the tops of the tall trees is now released by the wind… dropping in a mist over each of the elements of nature. With each drop, a melodic sound resonates, adding to the pleasing rhythm of the forest. Concurrently, some of the frogs excited by the rain, come out of their hiding places to organize themselves into a merry orchestra: 20...as many as 30 notes per minute, similar in sound to those of the instrument known as the washboard.... The screeching of crickets and grasshoppers are added akin to high flutes. Together, carrying my spirit towards a mystical dimension, as the insatiable song continues on.

e have been aware since the early 80´s that the planet was warming up and that the cause was the emissions of certain gasses that were increasing dramatically the greenhouse effect on our planet.
D esde inicios de los 80, ya se sabía que el planeta se estaba calentando y que la causa eran las emisiones de
algunos gases que estaban incrementando drásticamente el efecto invernadero de nuestro planeta.
In 1992, as a planetary response and following several meetings of smaller scale, the first Earth Summit was organized. The Rio de Janeiro Summit set the bases to attack the problem and an action plan was drawn to correct it. The first misstep for a global action came a little later: The country that produced the most contamination in the planet at that time, refused to sign it.
En 1992, como respuesta planetaria y luego de varias reuniones de menor escala, se organizó la primera Cumbre de la Tierra, la Cumbre de Río de Janeiro. En ella se sentaron las bases para atacar el problema y se trazó un plan de acción para corregirlo. El primer traspié para una acción global vino poco después: El país que más contaminaba el planeta en ese entonces, rechazó firmarlo.
5 years later, there was the Kyoto Summit and the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement within the framework of the United Nations about the climatic changes. This did not go into effect until 2005 and through the last decade, the majority of the countries signed and ratified this treaty and its legal obligations, even though the United States, again, decided not to ratify it. The treaty expected the governments to reduce at least a 5% on average the contaminating emissions between 2008 and 2012.
5 años después, vino la Cumbre de Kyoto y la firma del Protocolo de Kyoto, un convenio marco de Naciones Unidas sobre el cambio climático. Este solo entró en vigor hasta el año 2005 y a través de la última década, casi todos los países firmaron y confirmaron este tratado y sus obligaciones legales, aunque nuevamente Estados Unidos no quiso ratificarlo. El tratado pretendía que los gobiernos redujeran en al menos un 5% en promedio las emisiones contaminantes entre 2008 y 2012.

Two years away from the dateline established in Kyoto, many intellectuals, scientists, leaders and environmentalists had high hopes that the meeting of Copenhagen, could produce a document that would provide continuity to the Kyoto Protocol and should define stronger actions that would lead us to reduce the emission of gasses, particularly in the industrialized countries. The beginning of this summit in Denmark was marked by a series of particularly hopeful factors. The most encouraging sign was the global consciousness. If we compare the impact that the previous meeting in Kyoto had with the impact of this one in Copenhagen, among the public opinion and the leaders in attendance, one can clearly see how global warming has taken day by day a major priority within the global agenda. However, just days prior to its beginning the Summit suffered a setback because of a publication that strived to create confusion on the origin of the problem. What was the role of this summit? The Copenhagen Summit not only should give continuity to the Kyoto Protocol, but also promised to resolve a series of voids left by the Asiatic agreement. Among the most important was the increase of actions to reduce the warming by 2°C, an accepted parameter for the viability of the planet. There was also supposed to be a clarification of the economic contribution from the developed countries to the poorer ones, which are the ones that have suffered the major effects of this planetary illness. Contributions that were calculated to reach up to $20 billion. Together with these economic contributions another subject to be discussed was the migration of patented technologies, that would help those countries to be able to reduce the environmental impact. What happened (or didn´t happen) in Copenhagen? Unfortunately, once more the challenges presented were larger than the virtues of the politicians in charge. This time, the United States decided to get involved, did not pursue getting closer to the European Union, finally pacting only with China and India. Africa distanced itself from the process, several other countries chose to remain silent and non-participatory while Chavez and his boys took advantage of the summit to campaign, showcasing their total environmental ignorance and disregard. Finally, the United Nations limited itself to accepting an agreement of good will which was in no way binding.
A dos años de que se cumpla la fecha establecida en Kyoto, muchísimos intelectuales, científicos, líderes y ambientalistas, teníamos la esperanza de que la reunión de gobiernos realizada en diciembre en Copenhague, produciría un documento que daría continuidad al Protocolo de Kyoto y definiría las acciones que nos llevarían a disminuir la emisión de gases, sobre todo en los países industrializados. El inicio de esta cumbre en Dinamarca, se vio marcada por una serie de factores particulares muy esperanzadores. El mejor síntoma fue el de la conciencia global, pues al comparar el impacto previo que tuvo la reunión en Kyoto con esta realizada en Copenhague entre el público general y los líderes que asistieron, se puede observar claramente como el calentamiento global ha tomado una mayor prioridad dentro de la agenda global. Sin embargo unos días antes de su inicio, la Cumbre sufrió también un revés con la publicación de documentos que trataban de causar confusión sobre el origen del problema. ¿Cuál era el rol de esta cumbre? La Cumbre de Copenhague no solo debía darle continuidad al Protocolo de Kyoto, sino prometía resolver una serie de vacíos dejados por el acuerdo asiático. Entre los más importantes, estaba el incremento de acciones para disminuir el calentamiento en 2°C, un parámetro aceptado para la viabilidad del planeta.También se debía clarificar los aportes económicos de los países desarrollados a aquellos más pobres que son los que han sufrido los mayores efectos de esta enfermedad planetaria, aportes que se calcula deberían llegar hasta $20 billones. Junto con estos aportes económicos, también se debía tratar la migración de tecnologías patentadas que ayudaran a estos países a poder disminuir su impacto ambiental. ¿Que pasó (o no pasó) en Copenhague? Desafortunadamente una vez más, los retos demandados fueron mayores que las virtudes de los políticos encargados. Esta vez, aunque Estados Unidos decidió involucrarse, no busco un acercamiento con la Unión Europea, pactando finalmente solo con China y la India. Por su parte África se autodistanció del proceso, otros tantos países se amurraron, mientras que Chávez y su tropa, se dieron el lujo de usar la cumbre para hacer campaña, haciendo gala de una total ignorancia y despreocupación medioambiental. Finalmente, la ONU se limitó a aceptar un acuerdo de buena voluntad pero no vinculante, es decir, sin obligaciones legales de ningún tipo.

Once more this puts in evidence the reality that to reach consensus among 190 nations on a subject that touches the blood and soul of industrialization, that is, the use of fossil fuel and the non-stopping economic growth, is a really difficult chore since no one wants to make sacrifices. Again, the big economic interests prevailed and very little was done in favor of the health of the planet. The implications for Costa Rica are many. At some point in time this type of treaty was seen as an opportunistic way to obtain some options for economic development by taking advantage of the exchange of emissions, or the contamination permits that would have to be paid by the developed countries to mitigate their effect. However, the implications of not taking concrete and actions that are much more ecologically ambitious will truly be very serious for a tropical country which depends on its agricultural and tourist sectors. If we continue on the path we are on now, the impact of global warming at the level of draughts and floods could affect Costa Rica in a drastic way. Copenhagen has been declared by many a new disappointment and by others a new vision of hope with the sights set on the Mexico 2010 meeting.
Esto evidencia nuevamente que lograr consenso entre más de 190 países sobre un tema que toca la sangre y el alma de la industrialización, es decir, el uso de combustibles fósiles y un crecimiento económico incesante, es una tarea realmente difícil pues nadie quiere hacer sacrificios. Nuevamente, primaron los grandes intereses económicos y muy poco, la salud del planeta. Las implicaciones para Costa Rica son muchas. En algún momento este tipo de tratados se vieron como una forma oportunista de obtener algunas opciones de desarrollo económico, aprovechando los canjes de emisiones o los permisos de contaminación que tendrían que pagar los países desarrollados para mitigar sus efectos. Sin embargo las implicaciones de que no se tomen acciones concretas y ecológicamente más ambiciosas, serán realmente fuertes para un país tropical que depende de su sector agrícola y turístico. Si seguimos por el paso que vamos, los impactos del calentamiento a nivel de sequías e inundaciones podrían atacar Costa Rica de forma drástica. Copenhague ha sido declarada por muchos como una nueva desilusión y por otros como una visión esperanzadora con miras al encuentro de México 2010.

The concert Daniela performed at the Costa Rican Embassy in Moscow was a big success. Last December 21st, Daniela was showered with praise. Additionally, she received an invitation to play at the recital “Nights of Musical Enjoyment” at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where only “the best piano students in Russia” will play. Hardly a few months after her arrival in Moscow her talent was affirmed. Those who were blessed enough to see this young girl from Liberia play, declared that Daniela deserves a distinguished place among “the best piano students in the country”. Here in Costa Rica last December, Daniela was elected by the readers of Al Día newspaper as one of the most distinguished Costa Rican personalities of 2009. We also would like to take this opportunity to let you know that you can watch two new videos of Daniela on our web page. In one of the videos, she is shown playing at the Hiller Academy when she was just 9 years old. The other was filmed in 2009 at the Melico Salazar Theater, where she shined while performing her interpretation of the very complicated Sonata for Piano No.1 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Rancho Humo Ecological Preserve

Even though most of us would be hard pressed to find a correlation among cattle ranching, sustainable tourism, restoration of wetlands and dissemination of rural traditions, sometime ago William Salom had the vision of combining all of it.
A t a time before, this successful Colombian businessman, established in Costa Rica for the last 40 years, had
become enchanted with a cattle hacienda of 2639 acres by the shores of the Tempisque River in Guanacaste. He tells that "it was love at first sight" and without thinking about it twice, he decided to buy it. Strangely, soon thereafter he started to work on flooding a good part of his new property. Yes, you read correctly...flooding a good part of his new property, because he knew that those cow-lands were wetlands previously and he had decided it was only right to give it back to nature allowing the return of the water to an area that during decades had been drained and blocked in order to allow the grow of pasture. Today, just 4 years after the beginning of the restoration of the water resources, the wetlands have returned in abundance and with them has come all the rich biodiversity that feels so at home in these dynamic ecosystems. Thanks to this unbelievable bio-recovery, Rancho Humo and the low impact systems used by Salom's technical team, today are now recognized worldwide as an exemplary model of managing the restoration of wetlands and reforestation of the tropical dry forests.

Aunque a la mayoría nos costaría encontrar una relación entre ganadería, turismo sostenible, restauración de humedales y difusión de las tradiciones rurales, William Salom tuvo hace algún tiempo la visión de combinarlo todo.

iempo antes, este exitoso empresario colombiano radicado en Costa Rica desde hace 40 años, se había encantado con una hacienda ganadera de 1068 hectáreas junto a la rivera del Río Tempisque en Guanacaste. Él cuenta que “fue amor a primera vista” y sin pensarlo dos veces, se decidió a comprarla. Curiosamente, al poco tiempo, se puso manos a la obra para inundar una buena parte de su nueva propiedad. Sí, leyó bien…Inundar buena parte de su nueva propiedad, pues el sabía que años antes esas tierras habían sido humedales y su intensión era la de devolvérselos a la naturaleza, permitiendo el regreso del agua a los potreros que durante décadas habían sido drenados y bloqueados para permitir el crecimiento de pastizales. Hoy, a cuatro años de iniciada la restauración de los cursos de agua, los humedales han regresado en plenitud y con ellos toda la rica biodiversidad que tan a gusto se siente en estos dinámicos ecosistemas. Gracias a esta increíble bio-recuperación, Rancho Humo y los sistemas de bajo impacto usados por el equipo técnico de Salom, son hoy reconocidos mundialmente como un modelo ejemplar de manejo en la restauración de humedales y reforestación de bosque tropical seco.

This private ecological preserve on the shores of the Tempisque, shelters different ecosystems such as mangroves, dry forest and extensive wetlands, which are now home to a great variety of flora and fauna. The stars of the place are, without a doubt, the birds. They find the ideal conditions to feed, mate and nest in these mirrors of water with a depth of 4 to 24 inches surrounded by abundant bushes and herbs. The list of feathered residents is very extensive and includes several species of storks, ibis, herons, falcons, cormorants, spoonbills gulls, ducks and night herons, among other groups. The unusual abundance of 3 of the largest birds of the country deserves special mention: The lonely blue heron, the eye catching roseate spoonbill and the largest of them all, the impressive Jabiru.

Esta reserva ecológica privada a orillas del Tempisque, alberga diferentes ecosistemas como manglares, bosque seco y extensos humedales, que son hoy el hogar de una increíble variedad de flora y fauna. Las estrellas del lugar son sin duda las aves, que en estos espejos de agua de entre 10 y 60 cm de profundidad, rodeados de abundantes arbustos y hierbas, encuentran las condiciones ideales para alimentarse, aparearse y anidar. La lista de residentes emplumados es muy extensa, con varias especies de cigüeñas, íbices, garzas, halcones, cormoranes, gaviotas, patos y martinetes, entre otros grupos. Mención especial merece la inusual abundancia de tres de las aves más grandes del país: Las solitarias garzas azules, las llamativas espátulas rosadas y la mayor de todas, el imponente jabirú o “galán sin ventura”. Sin embargo, la familia aviar no es la única a gusto en estos parajes. Además de insectos, peces y crustáceos que forman la base de la cadena alimenticia, también hay abundancia de reptiles y mamíferos, quienes completan los eslabones de un ecosistema increíblemente rico y en constante movimiento.

Maravillado con la nueva belleza que había adquirido la vieja hacienda, ahora rebosante de vida, Don William pensó que esto había que mostrarlo. Ifamous t’s well known that the oceans of Guanacaste are for the abundance of marine life and for the incredible diving experiences that its waters offer. Though each dive site has its own particular attraction there is one that always gathers the best stories, generally with a common denominator: rays, rays and more rays! This place is overcome with Mobley Rays, Spotted Rays, Eagle Rays, Diamond Stingrays, Southern Stingrays, Round Stingrays, Lesser Devil Rays and of course, the magnificent Giant Manta Ray or rather, dozens of them at once…. The Catalina Island is the name of this paradise, a small group of volcanic rocks some 60 minutes from Tamarindo and about 40 minutes from Playas del Coco, internationally catalogued among the 5 most spectacular dive sites of all the Central American Pacific. In this rocky coral reef there is an abundance of all types of colorful tropical fauna and it’s possible to see turtles, angel fish, octopus, seahorses, star fish, several species of morays, some sharks and of course, pleeeenty of rays all in a single dive!

When? Diving is incredible year round, but to see the spectacle of the rays in its fullness, the best time is right now, between December and April of each year… What will we see? Let’s say that it is practically guaranteed that in each dive you will see a minimum of some 200 rays, about 10,000 fish of various types in big schools, no less than 5 silvertip sharks, at least a couple of turtles, a few small octopuses, some seahorses, plenty of morays and an ample array of reef flora and fauna.

The park’s attractions include the mildly active Rincon de la Vieja volcano with its constantly active fumaroles and bubbling mud pots, relaxing hot springs and impressive waterfalls that appear as if out of nowhere in the middle of tropical rain forest that abounds with flora and fauna such as tapirs, monkeys, coatis, agutis and a boundless number of birds and insects. There are good trails, camping facilities and nearby hotels. The rough road (take a 4WD) is an experience in itself, but the beauty and diversity of the park makes a trip out there well worthwhile.

This park is an incomparable example of tropical dry forest. Offshore are the Bat Islands, which provide exceptional sites for scuba divers. Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point located within the park are two worldclass surfing spots. Thousands of sea turtles arrive to nest on the beaches from July to December. In addition there is also the Santa Rosa lodge which is now a museum that commemorates the 1856 victory of an improvised costarican army assembled against North American filibusters and which today is one of the country’s main historical sites.

Los atractivos del parque son el suavemente activo Volcán Rincón de la Vieja (1895m) con sus constantes fumarolas, burbujeantes fuentes de barro, relajantes aguas termales terapéuticas e impactantes cascadas que aparecen de improviso en medio de un bosque tropical húmedo, lleno de abundante flora y fauna como tapires, monos, coatís, agutís e infinidad de aves e insectos. Hay buenos senderos, facilidades para camping y hoteles en las cercanías. El rudo camino (solo en 4x 4), es toda una aventura, pero la belleza y diversidad del parque hacen que valga la pena llegar hasta allá.
Este parque es una muestra completísima de lo que es un bosque seco tropical. Junto al parque están las Islas Murciélagos, un privilegiado sitio de buceo y Roca Bruja y Ollie’s Point, dos sitios de surf célebres a nivel mundial. De Julio a Diciembre, llegan a anidar a sus playas miles de tortugas marinas. Además, en el parque está la casona de Santa Rosa, un museo que conmemora la victoria en 1856 de un improvisado ejército costarricense contra filibusteros estadounidenses, y que es uno de los principales hitos de la historia del país.

Palo Verde National Park

This park is an important migratory zone for birds. It is famed for its high density and variety of bird species, which can be observed while floating gently on tours down the river. In addition to the park facilities, the scientific research station offers lodging, food and tours which help to finance the studies. El parque es una importante zona migratoria para aves. Es famoso por la alta densidad y variedad de especies de aves, los que pueden ser observadas de cerca en navegando por rios y canales. Además de las facilidades del parque, la estación de investigación científica ofrece alojamiento, comida y tours, los que contribuyen a financiar las investigaciones.

Tenorio National Park

Known for its stunning Rio Celeste (Light Blue River), named after the color of its waters which are dyed blue by the presence of calcium and sulphuric carbonates in the water. Covered by dense clouds and leafy jungle, the park houses abundant flora and fauna, rivers, large waterfalls and small hot springs. Conocido por su precioso Río Celeste, nombrado así por sus aguas de color, fruto de la presencia de carbonato cálcico y sulfúrico en su composición. Cubierto por densas nubes y una selva frondosa, el parque alberga una abundante fauna y flora, ríos, grandes cascadas y algunas piscinas naturales de aguas termales.

Arenal National Park

The star of the park, Arenal volcano, is the most active in Central America and at night, offers impressive views of the crater with incandescent lava running out of it and down its slopes. The park is a great example of rain forest in which one can see a great variety of birds such as toucans, parrots and quetzals as well as a wide range of mammals and reptiles.

Las Baulas National Park

A refuge for leatherback turtles that protects one of the world’s most important nesting sites for this highly-endangered species. These animals arrive every year between October and February. During the season all visitors at night (prime nesting hours) who come to see the turtles must go accompanied by a local certified guide. Un refugio para tortugas baulas que protege uno de los sitios de desove más importante para esta especie en todo el mundo. Estos animales vienen todos los años entre Octubre y Febrero. Durante esta temporada, todos los visitantes nocturnos (hora de desove) que van a ver a las tortugas, van acompañados por un guía local certificado.

Barra Honda National Park

It is a dry tropical forest of 5,600 acres with 42 extraordinary subterranean caves and a look out point with views of the Tempisque River, the Golf of Nicoya and some of its islands. During all the year, one can see monkeys, deer, raccoons, ocelots, peccary, opossum, tepescuintle and anteaters, in addition to an ample variety of birds and plants typical of the dry tropical forests. There is a good information center at the park, picnic tables and trails in very good condition. A call the day before your planned visit is required to confirm the availability and to reserve the tour guides and the safety equipment you will need to carry. Son 2.295 hectáreas de bosque tropical seco con 42 impresionantes cavernas subterráneas y un mirador con vistas del río Tempisque, el Golfo de Nicoya y sus islas.Todo el año se puede ver monos, venados, mapaches, ocelotes, pecarís, coatís, martillas, tepezcuintles y osos hormigueros, además de una amplia variedad de aves y plantas típicas del bosque tropical seco. El parque cuenta con un buen centro de información, mesas para almorzar y senderos en muy buen estado. Se debe llamar el día anterior para confirmar disponibilidad, reservar los guías y el equipo de seguridad necesario para un descenso sin riesgos.
La estrella de este parque, el Volcán Arenal, es el más activo de Centroamerica y por las noches, ofrece impresionantes vistas del cráter con lava incandescente descendiendo por el. El parque, es un gran exponente del bosque lluvioso, en el que podrá ver gran variedad de aves como tucanes, papagayos y quetzales, así como también una amplia gama de mamíferos y reptiles.
