HOUSE SPORTS DAY
Welcome back to RGS Hartswood for this year’s RGS House Sports Day. This much lookedforward to event promises to be every bit as much fun as it has always been. Students have eagerly signed up for events and staff are working hard to prepare the ground for an exciting day ahead and fortunately the rain earlier in the spring has been followed by a muchneeded sunny spell, which is set to continue.
House banners will be flying, there will be refreshments and something for everyone. Students have signed up for events in their Houses with many challenging themselves in disciplines they otherwise would not have considered. This is what school sports days are all about: assessments are over, summer has begun and it is a chance to show your mettle on the sports field. Through such events we continue to promote our aim to ‘develop great people through sport’, and whilst winning is important, it is the taking part that shapes the personal outcome for each individual.
The RGS sporting philosophy supports a multi-sport approach, and today sees students compete at athletics, cricket, rounders, tennis and Ultimate Frisbee and one of the highlights of the day will be the track Inter-House mixed relays. Overall team and individual athletics prizes will be
awarded at the final assembly at the end of term.
Please join me in thanking the Heads of House for organising teams, the RGS grounds department for all their work in preparing such a wonderful environment in which to enjoy sport, the PE department for the huge effort that goes into organising such an event, the catering team for the refreshments and for all families who put in so much effort throughout the year supporting students with sport and other extra-curricular activities.
Whether you are in Bird, Cranston, Hodgson or Williamson, we wish you a very happy and successful RGS House Sports Day.

FROM THE HEADMASTER
SPORTS DAY FOREWORD
It has been another hugely successful year for RGS Sport. Team Reigate continues to compete for national honours across a range of sporting activities. We are very proud of the enormous number of students who represent the school, they have been a credit to RGS and continue to successfully balance their academic studies with all that is on offer beyond the classroom. This year we have launched our Vision for Sport, focusing on developing Great People through Sport. Thank you to the hundreds of people who came to our launch events and who have read our supporting material. It is important for us to share this vision as widely as possible for our whole community to be able to support us in our journey to developing all our students.
Sport at RGS is all about community. Indeed, we want all pupils to work in an environment where they strive to be part of something bigger than themselves, and today is a great opportunity for all students to come together and enjoy a celebration of summer sport, in a meaningful and memorable way.
Academic staff work incredibly hard to give our students the confidence to continue with their extra-curricular passions throughout an intense examination period. We hope that Sports day is a fun and inclusive conclusion to a busy exam week. Today, our athletes and sports people will show some of their talents as well as the values and behaviours we associate with being part of Team Reigate.
This has been equally evident in all sport throughout the term and we are proud to say that this has underpinned great success. This has been a year of great progression for many students in an individual, team and community capacity. To highlight just a few of these, 27
of our athletes broke their personal bests during district competition this summer, while our Boys and Girls 1st XI cricket teams are enjoying their best seasons in recent years and are proving they are in the top tier of cricket in the region. The Junior Girls went on their first ever Jersey cricket tour over Easter after the first full winter nets training block for the girls’ teams. We are striving to promote equality of opportunity in all areas of school sport despite traditional barriers being in place. Of course, athletics is one of the sports that has always seen our whole school community compete side by side and Sports Day is the annual highlight of this.
With too many individual successes to mention, please look out for the weekly sport update in the Headmaster’s Bulletin. It is a great strength of our sporting community that we have so many talented students across a wide range of sports and activities, and much of their successes are also down to the parents whose support for their children and our sporting programme is a key factor in enabling us to do what we do.
We hope you enjoy the day.

VISION FOR SPORT
Sport continues to evolve at RGS with increasing emphasis on our vision to develop great people through sport. The stories from sport this year have been increasingly rooted in a values-based and behaviours-driven approach, where sport is about being part of something bigger than yourself. While we want individuals to shine, we also want students to embrace the Team Reigate spirit.
Our key aim is to develop great PEOPLE through sport. We created the following acronym as a useful reminder for what we hold as most important. It is our mission for the Sports department and the basis for our success criteria.
Our intention is to create an environment where every student on the pitch has a great experience, both RGS students and our opposition. This means we want competitive games where the result hangs in the balance until as late as possible in the game. This keeps students engaged and enjoying sport as the perception of competence is important to all. We put collaboration with
opposition above competition against opposition. We love watching students succeed and often winning a narrowly contested game brings smiles and excitement. But we need to remember that sport is not a zero-sum game where there must always be a winner and a loser.

HIGH PERFORMANCE HUB
The High Performance Hub has continued to be a thread that many of our students use to support their sporting development. This term, the HPH has included lunchtime sessions every Friday, exploring sleep habits, psychological skills, and student workload awareness, as well as a nutrition seminar where students were able to apply some theory into making their own healthy, energy packed snacks! These varied experiences have prompted conversations and interventions across students and staff, and we look forward to further opportunities through the spring and summer terms. This focus on holistic development and developing great people through sport has underpinned the approach throughout.
For our senior male and female cricket scholars and our high-performance indoor hockey squads, there have been weekly (or more) sessions throughout the off season to enable them to prepare for the upcoming competitive phases of their respective programmes. These have been well attended and allowed our coaches to provide an individualised and bespoke programme of development. In a similar vein, the Athletic Development Programme has enabled students to access sessions before, during and after school. It has been great to see so many First and Second Form students in particular attending these, laying the foundations for great movement and engagement in sport as they move through the school.
