Commodore’s Message

The Club’s celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) began back in June with the HKSAR 25th Anniversary Sailing Cup and will continue through this month so by the time it’s all over, we will have showcased what we are all about – sailing, rowing, paddling, charity, sustainability and community. My thanks to everyone involved from the 25A Working Group, member volunteers and staff who made it all happen. The St. James’s Place Sunset Series continues through the summer months and as ever, it’s a great opportunity to introduce new crew to

the sailing scene and of course start off the weekend early in a fun and relaxed manner. The atmosphere at the Chart Room Balcony and on Main Deck during and after racing is an added bonus. The Rowing and Paddle Sports Sunset Series will take place over four Thursday evenings throughout July and August. As with the St. James Place Sailing equivalent, competitors will be able to enjoy some tough racing in the harbour followed by a sociable evening. The first of the new mark laying boats, and the new sampan for Middle Island, are presently aboard container ships on their way to Hong Kong. For those who have access to a ship tracking AIS system the ships names are, respectively, CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin and the HMM Mir. Thanks go to Bram van Olphen of the Dragon fleet whose company quoted the lowest shipping price. The new mark laying boat has been named Noel Croucher II and, having completed her sea trials on the Solent, will be available for race duties as soon as the Marine Department license can be processed. The sampan will have her ePropulsion outboard engine fitted at Kellett Island. With the hull of the sampan being constructed entirely of recyclable HDPE and the electric propulsion replacing a petrol-powered outboard engine the Club will be lowering our carbon footprint at Middle Island. I hope you all have a great summer and, if you are travelling, look forward to seeing you back here for the start of the new season in September.

The Bridge

Many thanks to all members who participated in the Electoral General meeting held at Kellett on 9 June, and congratulations to those who were elected. As our year comes to an end, I want to thank all of those who have served on the Club’s committees over the last year and especially Denis Martinet for the leadership he has shown in his two years as Commodore. These have not been easy times for many in Hong Kong and he has helped the Club Commodore Lucy Sutro navigate its way through the many Covid related challenges that we have faced.

General Manager’s Message

The Bridge

Well, it certainly was a very busy June with the Club getting increasingly back to normal, holding the first of the Club’s celebration races for the 25 year anniversary (25A) of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR, reopening the refurbished Chart Room, Club Room and Ward Room which feature furniture from our new furniture partner, Timothy Oulton, and towards the end of the month launching our new mobile friendly website – more on that later! But as always, this great Club General Manager Mark Bovaird 總經理布馬克 will not be resting on its laurels and we have a huge programme of races and events ahead in the next couple of months. There are plenty more 25A races to come from Sailing/Rowing/ Paddling, and of course the ever-popular Sunset Series on Friday nights. But in addition, there are plenty of wine events coming up too starting with the Cloudy Bay Wine Dinner on 21 July. Cloudy Bay has always been a firm favourite with members so this is one winery that needs no introduction from me – just be sure to book quickly! For a long while now we haven’t been able to have our large-scale wine fair at the poolside but I’m happy to say that with the latest relaxation in Covid restrictions, we have a new format for a Global Wine Fair coming to the Regatta Room and Rooftop on 29 July. This event features over 100 wines from 30 regions, brought to you by eight of our wine suppliers. Over to Japan now for something different and we are pleased to have the Kamoshibito Kuheiji 釀人九平次 and Tenryo 天領 Sake Dinner in the Compass Room on 17 August. If you have never been to a sake dinner

or even tried sake, this is a fantastic new experience for you, and if you have, you know this is one not to miss. One of the sake breweries featured has been in business since 1647! Then, on 27 August, join us for a Black Tie Champagne Dinner featuring Moët Chandon and Dom Pérignon. As it is still two months away, we hope that social distancing measures will be further relaxed by then, and if they are, we are poised to add some live entertainment to this great evening too. Our cadet members (aged 12 to 18) are being treated in August to an event JUST for them. Sorry mums and dads, this one isn’t for you. We have been working with the Family Committee on this one and we will be bringing in the inflatable water slide and adding some pool toys. Add to the mix a buffet and party games and it’s a fabulous party for our younger members. The Annual Mussel Party makes a welcome return too on 20 August – so popular is this event that it is factually four parties in one that takes up the Regatta Room, Rooftop, Main Deck and the Main Lawn! This is one of our most sought after and fastest events to sell out at the Club! So, as you can appreciate, there is plenty to keep you occupied here at the Club over the summer and even more promotions to learn about within these pages – and of course, on our new website! The new website was launched on 14 June and I hope you have had a chance to visit it. It’s wonderful to have a website that is finally viewable on any device – yes including your mobile phone! Feedback on the new website has been overwhelmingly positive and we hope that you will enjoy using it to keep up to date with races and events at your club. If you are travelling for the summer, we hope you have a brilliant time while you are away and look forward to welcoming you back soon. If you are staying in Hong Kong, we are sure you will have a brilliant time at all the events at the Club.

Spring Regatta 2022 sponsored Feature | Spring Regatta 2022 sponsored by HSBC Expat The Spring Regatta sponsored by HSBC Expat, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s official closing regatta to mark the end of the Club’s 2021-2022 sailing season, took place over the weekend of 14 and 15 May. After enduring days of persistent heavy rain leading up to the event, the weather gods finally relented, and the rain abated in time for the first start which saw 94 boats turn out to race. Race Officer Elberti Uiterwaal-Postma opted for a Hung Hom start which proved a good call, providing a one-hour window of no rain with even some patches of blue sky as the sailors enjoyed 5 to 8 kts of easterly breeze. 10

The other classes sailed two to three laps around Tai Koo Shing or Shau Kei Wan on courses ranging from approximately 6.26nm to 8.52nm.

As the start sequence progressed, the wind strengthened to around 10kts and the fleets enjoyed some very close racing. “The wind was a bit tricky, and we considered courses based on 6kts, 8kts and 10kts, ultimately settling on a course for 8kts of wind speed. I think everyone had a good day. The wind was steady, oscillating from JUL/AUG 2022 AHOY! |

Coupled with 10 to 12kts of easterly breeze, 84 boats joined the racing on Day 2, with the Race Officer again setting up a Hung Hom start line. The TP52 class headed out to Junk Bay while the long course fleets raced 1.5 to 2 laps around Hung Hom and Shau Kei Wan and all the short course boats raced 1.5 to 2 laps to Tai Koo Shing. Not even persistent downpours could dimmish the spirits of the sailors, and fortunately, the rain eased up in time before the start of the third and final race of the weekend. With the timely arrival of north easterly monsoon, the wind progressively built up to 13 to 15kts (gusting up to 20kts), showcasing Hong Kong’s yachting at its best with the sun

coming out to dry the soaked sailors. This time the RO sent the fleets off on slightly longer courses around Shau Kei Wan or Tai Koo Shing before finishing the day. 2022 marks the 45th anniversary of the first Etchells racing in the Closing Regatta. The first Etchells was introduced in Hong Kong in 1976, and the second Etchells, owned by Mike Holbeche, arrived just in time for the Closing Regatta in 1977. By the start of the 1979 season, two more Etchells had arrived at the Club, the Class driven by the enthusiasm of such people as Malcolm Cooper and Henry Kaye, seeing the fleet jump to 14 boats by October 1980. Nowadays Etchells are one of the most active one-design class boat fleets in the Club and this weekend they were the biggest

participating class with 15 boats. Class Secretary, Bo Lee said “The international fleet is 50 years old, so it is fantastic that the Hong Kong fleet has been around for a large part of that history. In the past 3 years, we have not only seen more boats on the start line but also more women and sailors under 39 joining the fleet as helms as well as crew. This is in large part due to initiatives such as the training programme run on Etchells 555, our fleet boat, which also happens to celebrate her 40 th birthday this Sunday.” Bo mentioned further, Etchells is a very technically interesting and challenging boat, where boat and rig set up along with weight placement play crucial roles in winning races. As Etchells, Noddy, continued to maintain their steady track record,

taking first overall for the regatta, Dragon – Dragonfly, Flying Fifteen – Noisy Forefather, J/80 – Footloose and Sportsboat – Serendipity successfully led their divisions throughout the regatta, lifting their respective trophies. While Impala Gnu and Pandora Windfall climbed from second place to overall first place, whilst Ruffian Bandolero took two bullets to take the trophy. Almost all Big Boat divisions winners maintained their position at the top of the score board after the second day of racing. TP52 Freefire continued strongly with two bullets in hand to take the trophy. Red Kite 2 and Scintilla maintained their leads in Big Boat Division 1 and Division 3 respectively while Ding Dong took one bullet, only one point ahead of Amaze in Division 2.

With a consistent 8 to 10kts easterly breeze, the regular race management team of RO Gareth Williams and AROs Lucy Sutro, Sean Taylor and Victor Tsien elected to send the competitors on a 6.6nm course taking the fleet through Lei Yu Mun Gap and into Hong Kong’s Eastern Approaches, rounding Junk Bay Mark before returning into the eastern end of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour to satisfy the requirement of the HKRNVR Deed of Gift.

HKRNVR Deed of Gift In 1950, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase was presented to the Club in honour of the members of the Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves who died during the Battle for Hong Kong.

In making the presentation Lieutenant Commander J.C.M. Grenham said: “As most of you know, the inaugural meeting for the formation of the HKRNVR was held in the old Yacht Club. The Chairman was Andrew Lusk Shields, Commodore RHKYC, and later Hon Commander HKRNVR. The Vice-Commodore was H. S. Rouse – the first CO of the HKRNVR. Form the meeting, held in early 1933, emerged the HKNVF and HKRNVR. A close liaison was maintained with the Yacht Club – all officers were members and almost all the boat boys formed the nucleus of the seamen personnel. RNSA Dinghy races were held every Wednesday from the Cornflower. On your Roll of Honour the names of Peter Dulley, Donald Wagstaff, John Gifford Hull, John Colls, and H. Stopani Thompson appear whom you all knew personally as keen yachtsmen. I now have pleasure in handing to you as Commodore Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase. It must have a nautical history by reason of its dolphin design. It was made by T. Hemming in the reign of William IV 1834. We of the HKRNVR wish it to be sailed for annually, the course, if possible, to embraces our Loop Patrols, details of which will be given to your sailing committee.”

A

succession of starts based on RHKATI ratings began with the Pandora fleet at 1400hrs and culminated around an hour later with three TP52s FreeFire, Rampage88 and Phoenix, with the format of the race allowing the later starts to catch the slower fleets and overtake them. Although the wind softened to only 2kts with drizzle at Junk Bay, it luckily picked up again in the harbour allowing the fleet to finish the 6.6nm course plus Kowloon Bay and E1 mark for three more rounds before the target finishing time at 1630hrs. Again, RO Gareth Williams executed perfect accuracy by calling the first finisher only 5 seconds from the target finish time. Whilst Pandora Windfall led the fleet for the majority of the course, VX One Serendipity overtook her on the last leg and took the gun at 16:30:05, just a nail biting 5 seconds ahead of Pandora Windfall with Dragon Zephyr claiming third. The presentation of the then 116 year old Georgian silver vase with dolphin handles, which was purchased out of the HKRNVR pre-war mess funds, was handed to Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Commodore, N.V.A. Croucher by Lieutenant Commander J.C.M Grenham RNVR (Ret.) for a competition to perpetuate the memory of HKRNVR members who gave their lives during World War II with the request that an effort be made each year to set a course which represents an early wartime Naval Patrol.

Originally held a few days before International Women’s Day, Ladies Helm was postponed to 29 May due to the pandemic situation. 54 lady helms competed in the waters of Victoria Harbour across a fleet comprising of nine classes including Big Boats, Dragons, Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Impalas, J/80s, Pandoras, Ruffians and Sportsboats.

L

adies Helm aims to encourage more women to not only participate in sailing but to take on the role of helm. The event also encourages female sailors of all experience levels to take part, with no restrictions on the rest of the crew’s gender or in fact gender ratio, the only requirement being that the helm must be female. Each class of boat were originally set two races. The first race of the day started in a mild south-westerly breeze with soaring temperature. The long course fleets (Big Boats, J/80s, Sportsboats, Etchells and Impalas) were sent on southerly course which sailed 2.5 to 2 laps between Tin Hau and Kowloon Bay while all the short course boats sailed 1.5-1

laps between Tin Hau and Kowloon Bay. Unfortunately, the wind dropped significantly at the end of start sequence and the fleets parked up at North Point and Hung Hom under a baking hot sun, leading the Race Officer to shorten the course at Kowloon Bay.

The wind completely died out during the start sequence for Race 2, and Race Officer David Norton announced, “No more racing, please go home and find your way to main bar.”, receiving applause from the sailors. David said of the racing “…there were

challenging conditions today with a huge tide. We started in 6-8kts with gust up to 12kts, but it was very patchy and very light around PWD, so it was a real challenging race, it would have been a lot easier if the wind was more stable.”

They are now really enjoying sailing, I don’t even have to ask them to come, so they are motivated to sail with us. Next year I am trying to take both daughters to race on Dragon together.” April Yam, skipper of Impala Also Can, had been sailing as foredeck crew for 6 years, she was helming this year with the help of a group of experienced sailors. “I think female sailors give more attention to detail and that can benefit the whole team.” April said, glad to see more female participating in sailing. “I can see increasing numbers of female sailors, in both dinghies and class boats”. China’s Sailing Star – Guo Chuan(郭川) W O RD S: KEN T K A N / CHIN A S AILIN G SUB - C O MMIT T EE

Sailing

Guo Chuan was born in Qingdao, China in January 1965. He graduated from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He participated in the launching of commercial satellites after graduation. He turned to be a professional competitive sailor in 2011. As the first professional sailor, Guo had won many ‘FIRST’ in renowned international sailing events. Volvo Ocean Race Guo began sailing in Qingdao in 1996 and went to Hong Kong to enrich his sailing knowledge and polish his sailing skills. He was first appointed as the skipper of yacht "Qingdao" in 2004 to sail to Shimonoseki in Japan in memorial of the 25 years of friendship between the two cities. Since then he decided to learn to be a professional sailor. In 2008-09, Guo sailed around the world as the Media crew for Irish-Chinese entry, Green Dragon and became the first ever Asian participant in the Volvo Ocean Race history. Mini Transat Race In 2011, he completed the tough solo transatlantic race, The Mini Transat Race, after 36 days struggling at sea. It is a 4050 nautical miles solo race on the smallest offshore racing boats at only 6.5m long. Solo Circumnavigation After returning from the Mini Transat race in November, the 47-year-old had devoted most of his time to the preparation of his individual global challenge. Guo chose the 40-feeter, the most difficult and no one has completed the task which requires the sailor to finish 21,600 nautical miles at sea without stopping for supplies in about four and half months. Approved by the ISAF, the ship route is scheduled to go through Qingdao, the equator, Cape Horn, Weddell Sea, Cape of Good Hope, Malacca and back to Qingdao next April, which is an unprecedented course from the Orient. Guo sailed back home in the morning of 5 April 2013 to become the first Chinese to successfully circumnavigate the globe singlehanded. Aboard his Class40 yacht, 48-year-old Guo travelled about 21,600 nautical miles in 138 days before he returned to his hometown of Qingdao, where he set off on 18 November 2012. Arctic Ocean Challenge In 2015, Guo attempted to break another World Record. He and his international crew including two Frenchmen, a German and a Russian faced the Arctic Ocean World Record Challenge, which began on 3 September in the Russian city of Murmansk and finished at the Bering Strait. They only took 13 days to set a new World Record. This expedition on the maxi-trimaran Qingdao was not just a sporting achievement, but also to promote the ‘Peace and Sport’ spirit to more people. This sporting challenge also enabled Peace and Sport to raise funds for its field projects. Solo non-stop trans-Pacific Challenge Guo set sail to challenge solo non-stop trans-Pacific world record on 18 October 2016, departing from San Francisco for Shanghai. The 97-foot super trimaran ‘Qingdao China’ crossed the start line underneath the famous Golden Gate Bridge to challenge the extreme world record in 20 days. After a week sailing, the support team lost contact with Guo at about 3 am Eastern Standard Time on 25 October. A search helicopter, dispatched from Honolulu to Guo’s last known coordinates, found the boat’s main sail broke off and trailing in the water, but the skipper was not on board. They found Guo’s life jacket on board, but no sign of the sailor. In all, searchers covered 4,600 square miles of ocean over the two-day period. In the end, the support team admitted that Guo had gone missing about 1035 miles west of Hawaii and was presumed to be lost at sea.

ith the Covid restrictions in place for over four months, paddlers in Hong Kong could finally see a silver lining in May. The monthly Victoria Recreation Club Race Series kicked off its 2022 season with three races over a long weekend in Koa Nui style (Hawaiian meaning “great joy”). Race One was a 1km sprint from Round Island to Chung Hom Kok beach, while race Two was an 8km course between the pumping station and the pandas (some of the land reference points for paddlers). Both races were held one after the other on the sunny morning of 7 May. At the start of the races, there were 65 canoes packed together on the water! There was a number of new paddlers participating for the first time. RHKYC had great results on the small boats categories with Dave Smith winning both races and Erin Juhl winning the OC1 women category in race Two, while Martina Redaelli won the sprint marking down the same time as another paddler from a different club (well done, Liz!). Race Three was held on a public holiday just a couple of days later on 9 May. It was a 9km race that went through Repulse Bay, Ap Lei Pai lighthouse and Deep Water Bay on a hot, hazy morning without much

Dragon Boat Introduction Course

Rowing

he Dragon Boat Introduction Course is a four-week course that allows for first time dragon boaters to learn the proper techniques of paddling and gives a glimpse of what it takes to be part of the team and compete in dragon boat races. The first session is a theory session in a classroom with an introduction of the Yacht Club. This session provided insight of the club and what to prepare for in the upcoming weeks before we get on the water and start paddling! We were also introduced to the technical aspects of the dragon boat stroke and the “dos and don’ts” before stepping into the boat. From the second session onwards, it was live action in the water where we put what we learned in the classroom into action. The second session was more instructive as it gave us a chance to get a feel of being in the water and applying the paddling techniques we learned. The

coaches were continuously helping us fine tune our paddling technique and teaching us how to work as one boat. In the final two sessions, it was intensive training sessions where we simulated racing situations and also learned what to do in the event of a capsizing. Overall, the Introduction Course will give you a good understanding of dragon boating and what it takes to be part of the dragon boat team in the Club. If you want to continue to build up your experience and skills with dragon boat paddling, you can join the Dragon Boat Development Course which will give access to the boats and training sessions as a non-member of the Club.

Antifouling The Boatyard offers antifoul packages which include seven days hard standing for sailing boats. We lift your vessel, wash off normal marine growth, chock the vessel on the hardstand, wet sand old antifoul, fill any minor defects in the bottom, and paint two coats of Antifoul. The boat is then left to try for two-three days before it is lifted, and the chock marks touched up. Your boat is then launched the following day. At the yard we use International Paints for our Antifouls and have done so for many years as they are industry leaders in marine coatings systems. International provide a quality cost effective product that covers a wide range of boating uses. The most common types we use are Micron Extra 2 or Micron Ultra 2 Antifouls, and your preference is based on whether you want a hard or soft antifoul. Our team is often asked how often should you antifoul your boat? This has a lot to do with how much the boat is used and where it is moored, but generally we recommend having the bottom washed every three months and Antifouling recoated every twelve months. At the yard we allow seven to ten days to carry out an antifoul which allows for the processes involved in preparation and application to be carried out according to best industry practises and manufacturers recommendations.

SAIL RACING Reference Gloves TYLASKA H8 2:1 Halyard Shackle Tylaska Halyard Shackles have the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any existing halyard shackles. They are made of high strength aluminum and have a captive stainless steel cross-pin. These “2:1” models with an integral free-rolling sheave are designed for a main halyard system with a 2:1 purchase for easier mainsail hoisting. Mainsail halyard shackles provide a strong, fast, reliable means of attaching and releasing the mainsail halyard to the head of the sail. Adequate room for easy-fitting to the headboard and an easy-to-engage, smoothly functioning screw-pin are of paramount importance. Headboard shackles also prevent the bitter end of a loose halyard from inadvertantly unreeving by running through the sheave box at the top of the mast. The clevis slot length and width of Tylaska Halyard Shackles are carefully designed and machined to fit standard headboards without adding unnecessary mass or weight. The super-strong 17-4PH headboard pin resists wear and deformation, and is captive to avoid loss while the shackle is being attached. The pin is initially loose-fitting for easy engagement, but the fit tightens and secures as it is screwed in. When the pin is disengaged for attaching, the unique recessed thread design allows maximal clevis throat width for passing over the headboard or grommet.

Cloudy Bay Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 21 July “Many people can remember their first taste of Cloudy Bay; they were captivated by the wine.” – David Hohnen, Cloudy Bay’s founder. Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Marlborough. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay’s founder – David Hohnen – was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has risen to become New Zealand’s leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world. Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also embodies New Zealand's luxury to the World. The luxury of space and time, of intimate moments and nature’s rarest qualities. Sake Dinner Compass Room | Wednesday 17 August

Events | Promotions

Pre-dinner Tasting Dinner Price Speaker Reservations

Kamoshibito Kuheiji」Seeking a nostalgic, refined, mature fruit flavor. In Aichi Prefecture in Japan, Banjo Sake Brewery is a well-known and historical brewery established in 1647. The brand of Kamoshibito Kuheiji started in 1997. The brewery believes “Everything starts with rice”. No matter how high the brewing skill is, the variety of raw materials and vintage characteristics cannot be changed. The brewery has decided to build a new brewery in the “Kurodasho”. Connecting the rice fields and the brewery in one place. Kamoshibito Kuheiji strives for a balance of bitter, tart, and acidic. Instead of relying on special techniques, they make use of each sake's myriad scents to harmonize with the five tastes and bring out the natural shape and fullness of the products. By limiting the human technical influence, they can pay homage to the raw materials’ excellence. There is something elegant about the natural form. Tenryou is No. 1 at Gifu prefecture which uses the highest quality sake rice and polishes all sake rice at their own brewery. The brewery appointed their contracted farmers to cultivate high-quality sake rice. It mainly uses “Hida Homare” sake rice, whereas for some sake it uses “Yamada Nishiki”. Tenryou has won numerous awards over the years, including 10 consecutive gold awards from the Annual Japan Sake Award and 11 consecutive gold awards from Tokai Sake Awards. Tenryou's Sake has been selected as the first-class service sake for JAL domestic flights in Japan since 2011.
