Well, this was UNEXPECTED, right?

an you imagine if someone would have told you in January, “By March 15th your kids will be out of school for the rest of the year. You will be quarantined in your house for two months. Every event will be canceled, and you will not be able to hug your loved ones. Hundreds of thousands of people will die from a virus. You will have to close your businesses. Also, the life you have always known, may never return to normal.” I would have thought whoever was telling me this had lost their mind. No way. That sounds like some far-fetched plot from a 90s movie... Yet, here we are... The amazing thing about it, is how resilient people actually are. We think that we could never handle homeschooling our kids, cooking every meal, the stress of our loved ones getting sick, the financial strain... yet, we do it. We make it work and we learn to see the hidden blessings in the midst of the chaos. There is much uncertainty during this very strange chapter of history we are living in. One thing that is certain, we WILL overcome. The remarkable people in our great state will come together and we will all come out of this better than ever! I believe that with my whole heart. Lola Magazine has had to make some temporary adjustments. Due to businesses being closed we decided to bring you our May issue in an online format. We wanted to continue to support our local businesses and as always, bring you stories to lift your spirits and inspire you. It is our prayer that you are all safe and healthy. That you have found moments of great joy during this time of uncertainty. We hope that you continue to support our local businesses. We have faith that you will withstand this great challenge and that we will all be stronger than ever -- TOGETHER IN THE 318.

She had worked hard to lose weight and felt it took a toll on her face. After a consultation with Dr. Pennington, where 3D morphing software was utilized to simulate before and after results. She decided to undergo a lateral brow lift, an upper and lower blepharoplasty for rejuvenation of her eyes, a face and necklift to address the excess skin and dropping tissues, as well as a lip lift. During this unprecedented time, we are reminded of the importance of community, as we work together to fight COVID-19. Thank you to the doctors, nurses and entire team at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport who are working tirelessly for the health and well-being for all in our community. Thank you to everyone staying home to combat the spread of COVID-19. Please continue your efforts to stay healthy, and keep your community healthy. We’re in this together, so let’s continue to be stronger.

chsner LSU Health Shreveport has been on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19, as a testing and treatment facility. Due to the anticipated surge of COVID-19 intensive care cases, Ochsner LSU Health responded quickly with a plan to add more than 100 ICU beds at its Academic Medical Center on Kings Highway. Transferring labor and delivery, obstetric and pediatric inpatient services from its Kings Highway location in a matter of weeks created space for the ICU addition. Thanks to the Louisiana National Guard and several other organizations involved in the move, the hospital at 915 Margaret Place in Shreveport (now Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – St. Mary Medical Center) is once again operational and caring for inpatient Women’s & Children’s services. Our team would like to thank the community for all the support. We ask that you continue to follow proper COVID-19 guidelines.

salute to our local police department for their tireless efforts through these trying and difficult times! A couple of years ago, we took pictures of a few police officers, while they were off duty, in order to combine them with old pictures of past police officers that we found at the LSUS Archives. We blended the old and the new photos together as part of a

Twin Blends “Heroes Then and Now” video project in order to honor first responders. That video, as well as hundreds of other videos and pictures, can be found on our Twin Blends Photography Facebook page! Here are a few pictures that we used in the video! It’s just our way of honoring the men and women of the SPD. They are true HEROES!

his Cinco de Mayo make your top-shelf margarita over the top! This Coconut Orange Blossom Margarita is everything we deserve for a fantastic celebration. Usually, I make margaritas with silver tequila, but since it’s Cinco de Mayo and since we have been quarantined to our homes for quite a while, I thought that using some of the best tequila I’ve ever tasted would give this margarita the ultimate top-shelf feel. One of the characteristics of añejo tequila is that it is smooth enough to drink by itself. It is often known as a “sipping tequila”. Añejo tequila has been aged for at least one year and is golden or light brown in color. The smell is amazing. This tequila has vanilla undertones and is a bit smokey which makes it perfect for pairing with coconut and floral flavors. When all of these exceptional ingredients are combined it makes for an amazing margarita. Another great way to add a level of flavor to your cocktail is to atomize the cocktail glass that you are serving it in. I love to do this to enhance, often the secondary, flavor of the cocktail. In this case, I atomized the glass with a layer of orange blossom water which gave me a greater scent of the cocktail, making me really take notice of the orange blossom. This is a fun way to add another layer of complexity to your cocktails.

THANK YOU TO OUR CNB FAMILY THAT HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO MAKE DIFFERENCE IN 18. AdACitizens OUR COMMUNITY.

National Bank

PICTURED ARE A FEW OF THE CNB FAMILY MEMBERS.

A Banker’s Life During the COVID-19 Pandemic A little over a month ago no one in the Shreveport Bossier Metro area could have ever imagined how fast and how drastically things were about to change. The normal pre-Spring routines were starting and area schools were preparing for Spring Break. My how things changed. On March 22, when Governor Edwards issued the Statewide “Stay at Home Order,” Citizens National Bank and every other bank in the state was included on the list of essential infrastructure businesses. This is really when our work world started to change. As a bank we are required to have a “Pandemic Policy,” but this was the first time we had ever had to seriously think about using it. We were faced with implementing a plan that struck a balance between providing essential banking services to the communities we serve (Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto and Webster Parishes) and the health and safety of our over 200 employees. Like many other local business we moved our services to drive thru only and guided our customers to electronic delivery platforms. Now more than ever online banking, mobile banking and social media play a critical role in our ability to inform and serve our community. Our next step was to allow our most vulnerable employees to work from or stay home. We took the early decision that any employee that fell into a CDC defined high risk category, would be allowed to stay home and stay safe with pay. We also evaluated possibility of temporarily closing locations if the Pandemic worsened or infiltrated our organization. Thankfully that hasn’t happened. However, we have been challenged in other ways.

19. Ad Citizens National Bank We had no idea what was to come in late March when Congress began debating the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program. During the last three weeks Citizens National Bank and the entire community banking industry was consumed by the SBA PPP. These banks were thrust into the Federal Government’s plan to move $349 Billion into local economies in less than a month. Days are being spent on calls with local, state and national industry as well as Congressional leaders to collect the most current SBA PPP updates. Nights are spent developing a delivery mechanism that will respond rapidly to customer needs and be compliant with an ever-changing SBA loan program. It has been unlike anything I have experienced or read about in the banking industry. Our team of dedicated professionals answered the SBA’s call. We were able to originate loans to over 565 Northwest Louisiana businesses and provide funding for 8,560 families paychecks. Community Bankers doing Community Bank stuff. Each morning since the Pandemic started our entire staff meets on a conference call where all our branches and departments dial in. These calls give us a chance to begin our day together on a positive note. There is something about a shared sense of purpose that has united us. We are praying the COVID 19 Pandemic will end soon and we look forward to continuing to serve our communities.

FUNNY FARM Last week I bit a ping pong ball in half.

It occurred right after my oldest son pelted me in the forehead with it. I had calmly asked him 17 times to stop throwing it. I’m certain he will no longer ignore my requests nor test the limits of my mental stability.

This quarantine has us all going savage.

he past few weeks have been bizarre at best. One by one, each member of my family has had their moment. We’ve cried for no reason and on occasion have spoken loudly to one another, but mostly we’ve been decent. Our most effective place to retreat during meltdowns is the backyard. It’s calming out there. There’s space to spread out. Mostly, we need a big deep breath of cleansing air and sometimes a bush to kick. Digging in the dirt is medicinal for me. I began my gardening adventure more than a decade ago during my struggle with infertility. After one particularly difficult day, I found myself wandering the aisles of the Home Depot gardening section. That six pack of jalapeno plants that made their way into my shopping 21

“Carrots are my nemesis”

22. Payton Denny cart set the hook. My innate need to grow something had been met. Everyone received pickled jalapenos for Christmas. Gardening, much like getting pregnant with your first perfect child, is a slippery slope. One minute you’re buying a few tomato plants for your manageable 4x4 garden, and the next you’re loading a tiller and chicken feed in the back of your minivan. Adding one innocent layer at a time, life gets complicated. I have a propensity for inviting complicated in to stay. When it comes to gardening, I’ve tried it all. My watermelons aren’t sweet. My corn cobs bear seven hillbilly teeth kernels. Carrots are my nemesis. I cannot, for the life of me, make compost. However, as much as I have failed, I’ve experienced success. The happiest flower in the garden is a sunflower. For some reason, sunflowers and zinnias have decided that they like me. When I’m working in the yard, I hear my grandmother’s voice. “Plant things that you can harvest.” And so I do: tomatoes, okra, squash, cucumbers, blueberries, blackberries and herbs! There’s not much satisfaction that compares with a successful 22

garden harvest. And hell hath no fury like a farmer discovering a tobacco horn worm attack on almost ripe tomatoes. My raised garden bed is my sanctuary. No one in my family enjoys the toil required to produce a harvest, therefore my garden is a place where I can be alone. Because I’m alone, no one sees my failures. No one has to know that my purple hull peas were overrun by aphids or that the worms in my worm farm ran away. No one has to see me smash the perfectly ripened cantaloupe through which the deer gnawed a hole. No one has video evidence of me coming out of my shirt when a hairy spider dropped somewhere onto my body. On the flip side, my garden is right behind my house. Therefore, I can choose which successes to share. There have been plenty. And then there are my birds. I can’t describe the joy that these sassy creatures bring to our yard. Often people ask why we have chickens. I’m still not sure that I know the answer. I’ve long since slid from the top of that hill. But I can tell you that the postmaster now knows me by name, as in “Mrs. Denney, your chicks arrived this morning.” Raising chickens comes with two rules: 1. Keep them alive. 2. Enjoy the eggs The second is easier than the first. To successfully achieve #1, you’ll need a trap and a pistol. Oh, there’s one tiny additional detail—expect snakes. In raising birds, I have come to respect them. They diligently work all day to turn the ground and lay eggs. Consequently, when we eat chicken for dinner, I do my best to use every part. There is no comparison to homemade bone broth. If you have an instant pot, you must try it. I also feel obligated to admit that we do not eat our own birds. We haven’t gone that savage—yet. Lately, as I lay in bed each night, I wonder when we will get back to normal. And then I wonder if I really want to get back to normal. For me, it’s become painfully clear how disconnected and wasteful I have become in my busyness. Even in our slowing down, I’m discovering that we are still abundantly blessed. That

abundance, for my family, is evidenced in our outdoor space. I feel as if we’ve been granted a once in a lifetime opportunity to hit the reset button. The question I now ponder is which old habits will we carry into this next phase of life, and which will we leave behind?

31. Clinton (need content from Kathy) LOUISIANA STRONG: Surviving a Pandemic

WRITTEN BY CLINTON DOWNING

A

s 2020 began, we were hopeful for a new start in a new year and decade. Many of us had goals and aspirations for the next twelve months. Special vacations were planned. Personal and professional ambitions were set. We were leaping into this year with great vision and promise. The media had our minds clogged with malicious rhetoric from both political parties in a word-slinging battle during debates and rallies. The crème never really rose to the top as a political pool of quicksand engulfed the airwaves and internet in a presidential election year. 31

With so much attention on propaganda, the awareness of an outbreak of a virus, COVID19, coronavirus, that erupted in Wuhan, China in the fall of last year went under the radar. Many thought this would be an isolated outbreak with minimal impact. Some even called it a “hoax” or “fake news,” lacking true knowledge or compassion. When our U.S. government didn’t take the warning seriously as it vastly spread to Italy and Spain, one could wonder why such an infectious disease was not given more immediate attention. While fingers could be pointed and blame could be cast on those in power, it will not change the fact that that our normal way of living has drastically changed for now and the indefinite future. The first five known cases in the United States were greatly overshadowed with the tragic helicopter crash of NBA legend and Oscar winner Kobe Bryant and eight others. While the world mourned the loss of a sports icon, a virus worthy of creating a global pandemic lost its awareness and relativity. The coronavirus had hit U.S. soil and was making its way into port cities and major metropolitan areas. The hardest hit began with New York City, which accounts for 1/3 of our nation’s cases and deaths. In a city that never sleeps, the rapid spread of this disease put the Big Apple on pause. While Louisiana was reveling in the festive carnival season of Mardi Gras, its global attractiveness made New Orleans a prime target for the virus. Unbeknownst to the countless revelers, it was the beginning of a pandemic in the deep south. As it intensified, its outreach began to spread across Louisiana. It would

eventually extend to cases in all 64 parishes. The first signs of its severity were magnified when New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a statement suspending all festivals and parades leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. It is an order than now has extended until 2021 for all large gatherings and festivals. It is interesting that top two tourism destinations in the United States, New York City and Louisiana, have the highest risk rates, cases and deaths. With concerns of safety, Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a stay at home order and social distance guidelines for Louisiana. As a result, all schools were canceled for the rest of the academic year. Nonessential businesses, like my design and interior shop, have shuttered our doors, taking a huge financial loss. It has caused a severe economic impact with no definitive assurance of a reopening on the horizon. Just as financial instability looms with many individuals, emotional instability is a great factor for many affected during this pandemic. The sense of insecurity and instability is plaquing a darkness over so many people. Many people in sobriety have lost hope and turned back to their addictions to cope. Many have found solace in comfort eating to ease the boredom and depression. Amongst all the darkness is a light at the end of this tunnel. It is a beacon of hope, a flame of selflove, and a spark of brighter days ahead. Families are sitting down to dinner in their homes and getting reacquainted with one another. Long lost friends are reconnecting and restoring communication. People are getting to know people as well as themselves again. Priorities are being reevaluated. Humanity is being restored.

Priorities are being reevaluated. The world as we know it will never be the normal to which we became accustomed. Its uncertain how long we must remain six feet apart. All the things that we took for granted have taken preface over some of the extravagances and luxuries we made priority. While the world is on a hiatus, our Earth has begun to heal. The hole in the ozone layer is the smallest it has been in decades. Shorelines, wetlands and waterways have seen a rejuvenation of wildlife. Animals are migrating into civilizations where human progress had shut them out. Our eco system is getting a rebirth. I think we take all of this for granted in our busy lives. Mother nature has given us a wakeup call and we should not show resistance. We have a chance to continue this global healing for all of mankind and all living creatures. God has shown us that in the worst of times there can be better things to derive from it all. We have lost so much faith in humanity. We are being given a chance to reboot and place our focus on things that matter most. As a state we are survivalists. We survived the impact of Hurricane Katrina. We are southerners

Humanity is being restored. who love our state. We embody a spirit of great love for our culture, our people and our history. As we are separated from one another during this pandemic, we are only amplifying the unity of all things Louisiana yet to come. I pray that as we move forward that we all will be a little bit kinder to one another, that we love a little bit stronger and few have a greater understanding for everyone regardless of our race, religion, gender, sexuality or political views. At the end of the day we all bleed the same. We are one love. Many lives have been lost unfortunately to this virus. I have personally lost an old friend in New York City and had several friends in Louisiana infected with this virus. Let us not let their suffering and loss of life be in vain. Let us not forget how precious the gift of life is for us all. United we stand and divided we fall. I send you all great blessing of love and look forward to the day we can shake hands again, hug one another and have a bit of peace and solace in our lives. May God Bless you all now and forever.

efore COVID I was always busy and didn’t take time to read. Now I sit down more often and read. The Bible is my book of choice. I am learning and relearning Old and New testament stories. After COVID passes, I hope I established a habit to take time to read and be still every day.

41. Reflections Donesa D ue to the lifestyle changes that COVID 19 has forced upon society, the inability to attend church has really touched my heart. I always thought of it as a privilege, knowing that there are some places in the world where one is not allowed to worship freely. This time of social distancing has impacted me greatly in this area. Cherishing time with family and friends will no longer be a “given”...rather I will consider it a gift. I will definitely live a more cautious life regarding how I interact with the general public... 6 feet apart, not being able to show a comforting touch on the arm or hand, and keeping anti-bacterial wipes in my purse will be the norm. I will witness the development of a “new society,” in a way.

’m a Special Education teacher. I’ve always known how important structure and order are to my students. Our SPED students and their parents need our prayers right now. There just aren’t words or pictures to adequately explain what is happening today...they wake up every morning confused and desperately wanting to go to school again (their “order” in life). Well, our God is a God of order. I’ve discovered I need my students probably more than they need me! Our God uses them daily to bring order, encouragement, and creativity to my life!

hese unprecedented times have definitely been a wake-up call to what is really important. Our busy lives were suddenly filled with time -- lots of time to not just slow down but actually stop. We have time to pray and listen. The listening part had been missing because I was too busy. I have noticed the things that before were taken for granted now have come into full focus. I now appreciate even the little things like the beautiful lawns on our street, my neighbors’ calls and my grandson’s laugh. We are all startled by the suddenness of this lifechanging event, but sometimes it takes a “wakeup call” to realize that we are here to further His kingdom.

At May Marketing Group, we’re dedicated to providing stellar content with a national look. It’s kind of our thing. We don’t outsource, ever. All content is created in-house by one of our digital media professionals. It’s what makes us stand out from other digital media marketing companies. This past month has tested all of us. We’ve taken our own business model and amplified what it means to be creatives. We have worked around the clock with small businesses such as Citizens National Bank, Lowder Baking Company and The Swim School to remain relevant in a time of crisis. Altering business plans to restructure online has become more prevalent with our clients, and we’ve been there to help all along the way. We got into this business for one reason — a love of local community. COVID-19 has devastated our economy, locally and nationally, but we have bent with the curve. We are investing our time and energy into small businesses and that means working from home, having video chats with clients, and giving your customers what they need — right now.

ost of you know me as Lola’s Hostess with the Mostess. But what does that mean when there's no party to host and social distancing is keeping us from those we love? I am also mother to William (5), wife to Loyd, and chef/ owner of Caspiana Catering and now Glow Alchemy Kitchen, a fullservice health food cafe. November 5, 2019, I opened Glow. A long-time dream that evolved over years and finally, the time was right. It is more beautiful than I could have imagined. Our amazing clients poured in with support over the holiday season and into the winter. I could barely keep up, a good problem to have! Little did I know March 13 I hosted what would be my last party for several weeks. At the time there was talk about a government-mandated shutdown over an incurable virus that was spreading across the world. We didn’t know how true it 46

would be or how severe it would be or how long it would last. Now here we are, seven weeks later and still no parties to host. I remember thinking how busy my spring was looking, how full my calendar was and how much anxiety I was having over the upcoming weeks and parties that we were going to be catering. But that all changed, with one press conference: The calendar was cleared. The blessing was that I could stay home with my son since school was also closed. My husband, a banker, was still required to go to work and deemed essential. Scary in itself. The café was mandated to do curbside only, which was a burden to bear with employees scared over their next paycheck and how many hours they were going to receive, with me scared over how many sales we were going to do that week and whether I could even afford the groceries that had been purchased. So I made the decision to close completely with a prayer that my employees would qualify for unemployment. The next two weeks would prove to be a much-needed rest time for me to find a place of solitude, to get organized around the house, to spend time with my young son, and to take a deep breath after just opening the business in November. But social distancing grows harder and harder to maintain. After all, humans are social being; we thrive on interaction with other humans. Watching the news and hearing reports and talking to scared friends only makes the situation worse. So how does one combat stress, remain calm, keep our eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel? By getting back to basics, that’s how. Remembering how to cook again, reminding our children that playing outside is a blessing in the spring, having long breakfasts together as a family, something that we haven’t done in a really long time, having meaningful conversations with our spouse, and most of all being the teacher for our children. As we begin to emerge in phases back to our new normal for the foreseeable future, here are some tips to combat stress, cook at home with our families, and be one with mother nature. Stay strong, we will party together again soon!

Things I’m doing to boost immunity and fight stress right now All of these products are available at caspianacatering.com for curbside pick up… • Taking Super You to stay calm - elevated cortisol levels directly affect the immune system. • Frequently washing my and my children’s hands. • Keeping the air in my home fresh, taking advantage of spring by opening windows and doors. • Taking Q-Sciences Vitamin C spray three times a day and getting Vitamin D safety in the sun. • Adding Power Dust and Spirit Dust to my morning protein shake - These adapogenic blends are particularly supportive of the immune system. • Drinking lots of alkaline water. • Prioritizing sleep and drinking Magnesi-Om before bed. • Not panicking - most of us have the power to keep our immune system strong! 47

Breakfast with the family, a lost art

M

ost of the time we are rushing out the door with minutes to spare before being late for school drop off and getting to work on time. For now, if only a short time, we are home together and need to take advantage of long breakfasts and pajama chats. One of my favorite goto breakfast items that remind me of Saturday mornings with my parents is French toast with berries. It's a fun dish to make with kids, it's versatile, it can be made on the fly, or into a rich casserole the night before and popped into the oven that morning. And what better way to use that stale bread, because I know you bought too much a few weeks ago when you thought the store would sell out!

OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST 1 ½ cups of berries 8 eggs ²⁄3 cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp powdered sugar 2 tsp vanilla 10-12 slices of bread (I love brioche for this recipe) 2 cups whole milk Softened butter for pan • Grease a 9-inch casserole dish with softened butter. • Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl.

• Place bread in dish fanned out, you can also cube or tear it for a chunky look. • Pour mixture over until all bread is coated and bathing in the yummy custard mix. • Cover and let sit overnight. • Pre-heat oven to 350. • Scatter berries on top and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden. • Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!

48. Hostess

48

FAST FRENCH TOAST 8 slices of bread, any bread will do. 2-3 eggs 2 to 4 cups whole milk 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon Butter for griddle Berries, powdered sugar, syrup for topping

• Once warm, coat the bottom with butter. • Whisk together eggs, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and milk in a shallow dish or bowl. Dip each slice of bread in the mixture and place on hot griddle pan. • Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

• Heat a griddle pan or non• Serve warm with berries, a stick skillet on medium high dusting of powdered sugar, heat. or syrup.

Dinner party for 2 + 1 child

I

am definitely guilty of rotating the same meals over and over in my house, but now is the time to get out of that rut and get creative. You have nowhere to be and plenty of time. My favorite meals right now are coming out of the Instant Pot or on the grill outside. Make dinner special at least one night a week. Pour your nice wine, get the kids involved in cooking and setting the table. And really enjoy this time together. You can literally cook chicken in the Instant Pot in 10 minutes and it's fork tender and ready for any dish you can dream up. Make it Hawaiian, Mexican, Indian… the possibilities are endless. itamin D is produced naturally when your body is exposed to sunlight. You can also get it through certain foods and supplements to ensure adequate levels. The sunshine vitamin has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and facilitating normal immune system function. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says vitamin D plays a role in helping to reduce the likelihood of developing the flu! It also plays an important role in regulating mood and warding off depression! So get outside, open a window, and bask in the spring sun. (Safely.)

EMOTIONALLY connecting while SOCIAL

distancing

54. Dr Karen WRITTEN BY DR KAREN PENDLETON

I

pray that you and your beautiful families are well and continue to be healthy. First and foremost, be sure to tend to your own health and well-being and take good care of your family and friends. You may have noticed that although nature has brought us to a halt, our minds are busier than ever — so many doubts, questions, and fears. People everywhere are more anxious and stressed than ever. People need help to calm their minds so they can find peace and practical answers. In response to the current world crisis, I was inspired to create various platforms via Zoom to facilitate patient care, AskiDrKaren membership engagement and contact with various “tribes.”

54

Additionally, I created access to me for questions and answers through scheduling a Zoom Call via www.DrKarenOnCall.com Being the nurturing person that I am, I have collaborated with other professionals and companies for resources to help people through this difficult time. As in any difficult time, the disaster is followed by a wave of positivity. A tremendous amount of thought and effort has gone into this initiative, and I believe the results will be beneficial to many people in this time of need. This is an excellent time for each of us to immerse ourselves deeper in knowledge and wisdom of health and wellness by practicing the techniques I have and continue to teach. Many inspiring stories have been circulating about how people are helping others. This is a great time to create your own inspiring story. I certainly want to do my part in contributing to flattening the novel Coronavirus curve by socially distancing. As many of you know, I abide by 10 Tenets of Healthy Lifestyles. One of which is Healthy Relationships (Tenet #2). So emotionally connecting is very important. In the beginning of our state’s lockdown (03/23/2020), my partner, Dr. Jack Ward, and I formulated a plan to continue with our personal and professional lives in this “new normal.” From a personal standpoint, we decided to continue to support our local eateries such as Caspiana Catering/Glow Alchemy Kitchen, Zuzul Coastal Cuisine and We Olive and Wine Bar. Given our Tenet #7, Nutrition and Gut Health, we embraced the opportunity to shop strategically at Whole Foods Market during the

designated “senior citizen hour.” Remember we are in our sixties! These unprecedented times have allowed us to use some delicious recipes that we received from my medical school, Tulane University, and its Center for Culinary Medicine. Additionally, I have expanded the use of a Christmas present, my Smart Wi-Fi Instant Pot. Now, keeping with the personal aspect of our lives, we have had to restructure the ways in which we were achieving Body Movement (Tenet #9). We have been missing our “tribes” at Orangetheory Fitness, Stretch Studio Shreveport, Club Pilates Shreveport, Sleek Physique and the YMCA. Dr. Jack was on target with training for his 12th Ironman competition scheduled on 05/31/2020, in Tulsa Oklahoma. He did receive notice of its cancellation, but he is registered for the same event in 2021. We have continued to run the streets and are doing our own weight-resistant exercises. Utilizing the many virtual workouts that our professionals are offering has been priceless. Most of the aforementioned studios/clubs have virtual workouts to keep us moving and accountable. One of the facilitators at the 2019 I Am That Woman Retreat, Yogini Kimberli Boyd, has become my Tuesday and Thursday alarm clock with her 5:30 a.m. chair yoga session. Professionally speaking, I have expanded the use of our HIPPA-compliant electronic health records platform, www.gethealthie.com. Within the platform is Zoom, and this has definitely allowed continuity of care for all of my patients in Shreveport and in New Orleans. Most recently Dr. Jack and I were able to receive 16.5

continuing medical education (CME) hours by participating in a livestream Bale Doneen Preceptorship. Now, we can add to our resumes Arteriologists. Having this knowledge enables us to offer our patients even earlier detection of heart disease (heart attack and/or stroke) and an effective management program to prevent and/or reverse heart disease. From a fun and engaging focus, these unparalleled times have allowed me to come up with some creative opportunities. Every Monday at noon, I offer a “Virtual Coffee Break with Dr. Karen.” Here is the description: “A gathering of women after the end of the lockdown morning activities, i.e., breakfast, homeschooling and chores. We can see each other and meet new friends; and catch up on all things happy, maybe with a little update on these unprecedented times.” On Fridays at 5 p.m. I lead a “Virtual Happy Hour with Dr. Karen.” Here is the description: “A gathering of women at the end of the lockdown week. We can see each other and meet new friends. We can catch up on all things that happened during the week and share plans for the weekend with our favorite beverage… alcohol is definitely acceptable!!!” During one of my Virtual Coffee Breaks, a lady from upstate New York discovered my activity on Eventbrite. She decided to register for it and we had a delightful exchange. At one of my Virtual Happy Hours, I shared a presentation on Sleep Fitness (Tenet #6). The reasoning behind

that decision was for those in attendance to understand the association of quality sleep and our immunity during COVID-19. The 2nd full week of April, I substituted the Virtual Happy Hour date from that Friday, April 17th to Wednesday, April 15th. Why? Well… it was my 62nd Birthday! I had such a fun virtual birthday party. YAY!!! On Palm Sunday, 04/05/2020, I organized a Virtual Palm Sunday Brunch with my line sisters of Alpha Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., along with our Deans of Pledgees. Talk about a lovely gathering! Some of us had not seen each other since we pledged some 42 years ago (1978). So many memories and so much love! In summary, from a health standpoint social distancing is of utmost importance, as we all must do our part to “flatten the curve.” But social distancing should not negate our continued and hopefully enhance emotional connections.

reetings, my fellow Quarantinies! Now that we’ve all been huddled in our homes for well over a month (though it feels like two or three), it is more important than EVER to LOVE our interior surroundings! Being cooped up for this long can be depressing and give you a worldclass case of the blues. I for one am ready to ring in 2021 and bid a one-fingered salute to 2020!

⇶ The only project we’ve finished this year is an absolute jewel of a room. Actually, we redid 4 rooms, but I’m only gonna focus on the main seating area. This room is meant for youngsters so there is an absolute playfulness to it, but it is by no means childish. Because it is primarily intended for kids (12 and under), it gave us some creative leeway in our color palette, art and furnishings. The “moody” blue color we selected is called “Sea Serpent” by Sherwin Williams. This deeply saturated color gave us the vibe we desired, but also a beautiful backdrop for art/furnishings. We painted EVERYTHING in this color: walls, ceiling, molding, baseboards, crown, doors, shelving and even tried to match the drapery. We refer to this look as “dipped,” like we had literally dipped “Dipped” paint look in Sea Serpent by Sherwin Wiliams the entire space into a giant paint can. The effect is a perfectly moody T.V. room which is dark, but colorful, and I love everything about it! The blue ceiling runs into the foyer against alabaster white walls and is crowned with one of the coolest chandeliers (Henson’s) I’ve purchased to date! The sectional (All-Modern) provides ample seating for the grandkids and they are even encouraged to prop their feet on the coffee table (HOUZZ). It has a concrete veneer and acacia wood slats which are virtually impervious to stains and scratches. We dotted the sofa with artsy-fartsy pillows that none of the chirren will know the artist, but appreciate their artistic playfulness. The standalone piece is a lucite, mohair, and walnut chair from LumiSource and was Chandelier from Hensons/painted ceiling 75% off! This chair was originally over $2000 and is a showpiece! We paired

⇶ it with a cute lil velvet hassock (with storage) from Ivan Smith and an embossed LaCoste pillow. The brass/glass side table is also from Ivan Smith and the blue column lamp and art above sectional are from HomeGoods. All of this sits atop new plush carpeting from Henson’s, which continues down the stairs and into two adjacent bedrooms. All-in-all, it’s the perfect space to be quarantined, hang out, watch a movie and relax, especially if you have the “blues.”

e’ve been super fortunate, in that our entire business is structured around being able to work from home, while employing a team of remote freelancers. The only major change we had to make was to immediately cancel any inperson meetings. It’s been rewarding to remain at our normal work capacity, so that we can keep our clients well taken care of with any urgent communication needs they may have while everyone reinvents how society works. This digital issue of Lola Magazine is one example of a necessary pivot, and we hope you’ve enjoyed reading this online version. As always, it’s a pleasure to work with so many local businesses and organizations represented here in these “pages” and beyond online.

he only restaurants that were built to handle the Covid-19 mandated curbside service are fast-food restaurants (ex. Chik-fil-la). For most restaurateurs, we realize an annual average of 15% for take-out/curbside pick up. Going to 100% of our business as take-out/ curbside has been the equivalent of re-creating our business model just to keep our doors open. Don Juanz never closed its doors from day 1 of Covid-19. We kept our staff employed & found ways to cash flow our restaurants. Now that we’re permitted to serve frozen margaritas curbside (we love Louisiana!), every day is a different day as we constantly source inventory & ingredients to serve our guests.

HEALTH MATTERSbut SO DOES TASTE...

Louisiana has the second highest obesity rate in the nation. According to the Louisiana State Health Assessment, 36% of adults and 40% of children in Louisiana are classified as obese, polling higher than the national average in every other chronic disease category. In addition, about 14% of individuals across Louisiana have been diagnosed with diabetes, and 39% have been diagnosed with hypertension.

Eat Fit Louisiana has been designed as an easy and efficient tool to help end this epidemic in our great state. To change these statistics, Don Juanz’s Baja Beach Tacos, the only Ochsner Eat-Fit certified restaurant in North Louisiana, has teamed up with Eat Fit Shreveport to offer thirteen healthy menu options. Eat Fit Shreveport and Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos are making the HEALTHY choice the EASY choice by simply

choosing one of the menu options marked by the Eat Fit seal. Don Juanz’s motto, “We Put More into It than You’ll Ever Know,” was founded in 2006, and they have continued to make it their mission to serve only the freshest, highest quality cuisine that you can feel good about eating- everyday! They start with fresh food prepared with locally sourced, organic ingredients. You won’t find a microwave at Don Juanz. Their tortillas are made fresh for each order and salsas are made from scratch every day. One of Don Juanz’s favorite success stories is that of Lowell Kenyan. Lowell, a pastor at River Valley Church, lost a hundred pounds in one year! This father of six credits his weight loss to two things: Following the words of Jack LeLanne, “If God didn’t make it, don’t eat it,” (though Lowell admits this was the hard part- especially when dining out) and by only consuming eighteenhundred calories a day with controlled carb intake. He recognized that it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. His diet consists of grilled seafood, vegetables and eventually combining exercise into his regimen.

Lowell attributes his road to success directly to Don Juanz, where he’s a daily fixture. He dines on grilled, sashimi grade yellow-fin tuna tacos or yellowfin salad with organic greens and house made honey-lime cilantro dressing. Don O’Byrne, owner of Don Juanz, is so proud of Lowell and has loved being an important part of his journey. hicken Salad Chick has been significantly affected by the global pandemic. Losing our ability to hug on guests and share southern hospitality, which are cornerstones of our business, has been a huge blow to us. Thankfully, we have a strong curbside ToGo business and have successfully been delivering pre-ordered drops of chicken salad with limited sides to neighborhoods. We want to encourage our wonderful guests to continue ordering online from us for curbside and most importantly, follow us on facebook to keep an eye out for their neighborhood OR a neighborhood close to have chicken salad brought to them! At Chicken Salad Chick we believe in spreading joy, enriching lives and serving others; which, we did before the pandemic, we are doing this through the pandemic, and we will continue to do long after!

The pandemic has stolen that comradery from us and although we may have been hit, we will not be knocked out! We plan to come back soon and stronger than ever. o you remember the last time you received an unexpected compliment? How did it make you feel? Did it make an impression on you? When I consider the different types of impressions we make on people, there are none more powerful than when you do something unexpected to show people kindness. When you take the time to surprise people with compassion and love, you make them feel noticed and appreciated. You will also benefit because there is joy in unselfish acts when you give yourself or your resources. In 2020, Lola Magazine wants to challenge you to be better, be kinder and develop habits that may enhance the daily lives of others. Try implementing these eight ideas over the next couple months and let us know how it makes you feel. We know times have changed recently and we are unable to extend a hug or a high five. We encourage you to take this time to really soak in your family and dig deep to find the things in your life that are really important.
