We started our journey towards The Lola Magazine Heard Construction Inspiration Home in fall 2019. After meeting with Richard Heard of Heard Construction, we anticipated starting construction in May of 2020, but the global pandemic halted our progress. We revisited the project in early 2021, but then… lumber and building materials prices went through the roof (no pun intended).

Fast forward 20 months… after quite a few obstacles and many sleepless nights, relationships that began as just business evolved into genuine friendships and one absolutely stunning, complete work of art; The Inspiration Home… and here we are!

I would say this Inspiration Home was brought to you by Lola Magazine and Heard Construction, but that would be an inaccurate statement. It came to life by an entire community of people who poured their hearts and souls into one common goal… Creating a home that will leave you inspired, and we have done just that.

My gratitude goes beyond what I can convey in words. To the designers, decorators, subcontractors, material sponsors, and artists, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your talents with this project and with all who will tour this home.

To Laura Dodds and Paige Crawford, our dynamic duo design liaison team; my appreciation for your work and support is immeasurable.

To Richard Heard, Larry Hott, Cameren Trowbridge, Byron White, and the whole Heard Construction team;  I sincerely cannot thank all of you enough for believing in this project and staying the course, no matter what hurdles came our way. When I say that you guys are the best in the business, I say it with absolute certainty.

To my husband, children, my family and friends, thank you for stepping in to help when I was falling short. Many nights I laid awake, praying for guidance and the resources to finish this project. I earnestly prayed that when it was complete, everyone involved would stand together and be immensely proud of what this community of people, from all different walks, created TOGETHER.

By the grace of God, and a lot of hard work… WE have accomplished our goal, and how very proud I am to have been on this journey with all of you.

This issue of Lola Magazine is dedicated to all of you who were a part of The Lola Magazine Heard Construction Inspiration Home. For all of you who will have the opportunity to walk through this home- Get ready to be inspired!  and Gratitude!

Local Artist Maggie Jones Boudreaux spent countless hours in The Inspiration Home, hand painting this stunning space at the request of Julie Mays Interiors. Together these two talented women created this floor to sixteen-foot ceiling mural with leftover paint from every room in the home.

bits of gold accents.”

The majesty of this work is truly breathtaking.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Julie

Mays’ Inspiration for the large custom mural came from a neutral landscape series that Maggie created last year. Julie Mays shared her vision behind the mural, “The horizon line was important in the mural, the meaning behind the selected paint colors, the true heart of this or any home.  Bringing the light reflecting off the water from the lake into the room through the large windows… mainly telling the meaning of this symbolic space representing northern Louisiana.”.

When asked how she created a work of art on such a grand scale, Maggie explained, “ I took a mixed media approach and painted it very much like I would on a canvas. First, drawing the landscape in charcoal and slowly layering values to create the depth and space. In order to create color harmony within the space the colors were mixed using a bit of the paint colors from each of adjacent rooms in the home. I pulled in inspiration from the surrounding landscape of gentle rolling hills, trees, water, and clouds. The mural includes expressive mark making and tiny

Maggie Jones Boudreaux, a mixed media artist located in Ruston, feels blessed to say she is A RUSTON ARTIST!

Her formal training as an artist and as an educator comes from her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing with an emphasis in printmaking and a Master’s in Education with a concentration in art education. She began as a journalism major due to her father’s strong writing influence in her life. A few years in, after returning home from a trip to Europe, Maggie switched her studies to Studio Art. She had the privilege of studying under Tech’s greats, Peter Jones, Ed Pinkston & Charlie Meeds. Maggie gives credit to the knowledge these teachers passed on to her for giving her the foundation she stands on daily in her studio life. She is forever grateful for their influence. Her middle years in education were spent at the former Southwest Texas University in San Marcos and Austin Community College. In these years, Maggie gained cultural influence and knowledge from various Austin artists and professors.  In time between gaining her undergraduate and graduate degree, she spent over fifteen years traveling and living in west in Colorado, Montana and California.

Maggie had the opportunity to study in Rome by receiving a work study scholarship at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and recently painted under artist Catherine Kehoe in Nashville, Tennessee.

Today, Maggie is inspired by the nine other mixed media artists at Fringe, a local artist co-op in which she is a member. These fellow local artists inspire her to continue searching, looking and challenging herself as an artist.

Her work has been included in major design projects throughout the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Colorado, California, and Washington. Her work is also currently included in collections within the United Kingdom. Maggie continues to thrive on experimentation and continues to ask herself, “What if?...”

HOSTESS with the MOSTESS

Lola Inspiration Dinner

ow time flies when you’re having fun… or burning the candle at both ends perhaps? That’s exactly what Bevin and I have been doing. I first met this elegant energetic girl with a huge heart twenty years ago while we were making our way through college and working late nights at the hottest new restaurant in town. Little did we know then, we’d be lifelong friends and dream builders together. Fast forward to 2016, Bevin asks me for coffee to excitedly announce that she’s started a magazine to highlight all things local ladies. I in turn, share my updates and tell her that I’m building a health food brand and hope to open a restaurant soon. She looks me square in the eye and says “Jessica, you will do it and we are going to start here, you are Lola’s Hostess With The Mostess”. That September, 6 years ago, this column was born. Now here we are celebrating this anniversary with the biggest project yet. The Lola Inspiration Home. Bevin once again pulled out all the stops and pushed

the limits of her dreams and goals.

I am so proud of her and honored to be invited to cook the first dinner in this beautiful new home. So as you flip through the pages of this magazine I call home, remember the dreams, the sleepless nights, the tears and the laughs, and most importantly the friendships we make as women building together to create our legacies and our special bonds that know no bounds.

Sure, your home might be your personal sanctuary but, like all good things, it’s best shared with others. You’ve spent a lot of time and effort decorating your home to the nines, so you deserve to show it off every now and then. And what better way to do so than with a party?

It doesn’t matter if you’re whipping up a multi-course meal or throwing an old-school house party, entertaining is a great way to show off your space and hosting skills in one fell swoop. But before you assemble your cheese board and uncork that special bottle of vino, it’s important to get your home in the party spirit.

56

a small starter

When your guests arrive, ease them into the evening gently (and tastily!) with something to snack on immediately while you put the final touches on the main meal. It doesn’t have to be a big effort – a carefully selected fancy cheese with some artisan crackers sitting prettily on a wooden board is an amazing way to start an evening off right.

HAVE YOUR GUESTS COME EMPTY-HANDED

If your guests are super keen to bring a nice bottle of wine, let them, but if they ask the standard question “What shall we bring?” surprise them by waving them off and letting them know they can just bring themselves. It really adds to the hospitality of the evening and makes them feel looked-after. Plus, it ensures against the room-temperature gas station drinks they’re bound to grab at the last minute on their way over!

GO GREEN

Nothing elevates a room like fresh flowers and greenery. A simple bud resting in a delicate vase beside the powder room sink can make the space feel intimate and special.

A bouquet gathered from the garden or purchased at the floral market can add a pop of color and energy to the table. Even sculptural fern fronds on an outdoor table for a barbeque can be a simple, eye catching way to bring punctuation to the party!

57

consider the details

Make sure the butter is soft and the drinks are chilled. Have a good stock of ice cubes ready to go in the freezer. Buy a nice, crusty loaf of bread in the morning. Sprinkle some sunflower seeds in the salad. These little details don’t take a lot of work, but really add a nice touch to your affair.

COOK WHAT MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE

It can be tempting to bust out that fancy French recipe book to impress your friends, and if you are a confident cook, then by all means go crazy! But the last thing you want to do is offer yourself as a frazzled, stressed-out host when your friends arrive and things aren’t going to plan in the kitchen. Want to know the big secret of a successful dinner party? The food is secondary to the connections made. So, if all you can really cook confidently is pasta in a sauce straight out of the jar, that is so fine. I guarantee your guests will simply appreciate being invited to your home to have a meal with you.

CHILEAN SEA BASS EN PAPILLOTE

2 large zucchini

2 medium sized carrots

1 small red onion

1 large red bell pepper

2 garlic cloves large T. olive oil salt and pepper to taste

4 6 oz. Chilean Sea Bass fillets

4 tsp. Emeril’s Bayou Blast seasoning

4 lemon slices

8 sprigs fresh thyme

4 T. butter

4 T. white wine dividedolive oil for drizzling

• Julienne zucchini and carrots using a mandoline or by free hand.

• Slice the onion and red bell pepper into thin slices

• Mince garlic cloves with a hand grater

• Place the veggies in a bowl and add olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Toss to coat.

• Season fillets with about 1 tsp. of Emeril’s Bayou Blast seasoning on all sides.

• Place fillet on right side of parchment and top with 1/4 of mixed veggies, 1 lemon slice, 2 sprigs of fresh thyme, 1 T. of butter, 1 T. of white wine and a drizzle of olive oil.

• Fold the left side of the parchment to create a half moon shape and fold & crimp the edges from one side to the other to create a little cooking pouch for the fish. Make sure it’s tight as you want all the steam to remain inside. Repeat with remaining three servings.

• Place all of the pouches on a baking sheet and cook in a 375 degree oven for about 1520 minutes depending on the thickness of your fillets. Enjoy while it’s steaming hot!

PERNOD-SPIKED TOMATOES WITH FETA AND SPICY PRAWNS

3 cloves garlic, crushed pinch of dried oregano 3tbsp olive oil

2 small shallots, diced 2 cups cherry tomatoes, quartered 4-5tbsp Pernod 1tsp thyme leaves pinch chili flakes 1 fennel bulb, diced (save fronds for garnish)

1/2 cup crumbled feta juice of ½ lime 1 lemon, halved

2lbs raw king prawns or the largest shrimp you can find, peeled

1/2 cup powdered crab boil

• Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Add in crab boil and lemon. Then add the prawns. Allow to return to a simmer for 2 mins. Turn off the heat and set to the side, allowing the prawns to soak a bit.

• Cook the shallots, fennel and garlic in olive oil over medium heat until soften, careful not to burn. Add the tomatoes for 4-5 minutes until they are starting to soften and collapse. Add all but 1tbsp of the Pernod, the thyme and the chili flakes. Cook for a further 5 minutes, until the tomatoes have thickened but still have some texture. Add in the lime juice.

• Divide the tomato mixture between the glasses and top with the prawns. Crumble the feta and scatter it over the prawns. Garnish each verrine with a sprig of fennel and serve.

I’msure everyone has heard the terms “Botox” and or “dermal fillers” aka Juvederm or Restylane. The terms are everywhere these days and have rapidly become mainstream in both men and women of all ages, but if you are new to the idea of cosmetic injections the amount of information can be overwhelming. Whenever new patients come into our practice we always start with a physical exam, discussing with the patient their concerns. Oftentimes patients say, “I don’t know what to ask for”, and that is ok. It’s my job as a board certified dermatologist specializing in cosmetic injections to know how to treat your concerns. However, it is also important for patients

to be educated about their options so that together we can make the best choice of what products and treatments will address your concerns based on your anatomy and goals.

Our most requested in-office procedure are neuromodulators, such as Botox or Dysport, these are injections done to address dynamic movement which can cause lines and wrinkles. When patients are new to our practice, this is usually where we start. Not only are neuromodulators great at stopping set in lines and wrinkles, but they can prevent their formation in the future. With lighter dosing, commonly used in our younger patients, it can prevent lines and wrinkles from even forming. Neuromodulators is a great option for patients of all ages. The most common areas I recommend are between the eyebrows to stop you from scowling

and making the dreaded “11s”, the forehead to soften horizontal lines and around the eyes to alleviate crow’s feet. Another popular area is around the mouth to help improve down turning of the corners of mouth or in the upper lip to help have more upper lip when smiling, also known as the Botox lip flip. Neuromodulators can also be used in some lesser known areas such as the neck to prevent the skin from hanging down lower, with platysmal band Botox. Or, in the jaw muscle to help with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or teeth grinding, which can have the added benefit of helping slim the lower face. Things that always help prepare patients for exploring treatments with neurotoxin is to know that they can take 2-4 days to start working and up to two weeks to fully kick in. So, plan any treatments for special events, family pictures, or holidays at least 2-4 weeks ahead of time to make sure you have the full result of your treatment before the event.

The nice thing about neuormodulators are they last about 3-4 months, and for some patients having injections done just every 6 months is enough for them to have smoothing and prevention of further lines and wrinkles. We always discuss with our patients the timing that is best for their goals and anatomy.

The next most requested in-office procedure is dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane. These most commonly are just called “fillers” and are made of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin and other areas of the body. With them being a synthetic version of something your body already makes, they naturally metabolize over months to years depending on the filler used and the location they are placed. The purpose of fillers is to replace lost volume or enhance an area. As we age, we lose volume in our faces causing areas to droop and lines to form. The most common area I place filler for facial rejuvenation is in the cheeks. This lifts sagging skin and can help with nasal labial folds and jowls. The next place I usually place filler is in and around the mouth to help revolumize the lips and correct the down turning of the corners of the mouth. Other areas fillers can be used are the nasolabial folds, smile lines, temples, jawline, chin, under eyes to help look more refreshed, ear lobes for sagging and nose for a liquid rhinoplasty. Fillers can be very versatile and safe when injected by a trained physician. Unlike neurotoxin filler results are instant, but for the first week after there can be some swelling and potential bruising, so again doing any filler treatments two weeks prior to any engagements, events, vacations or photos is recommended. There is a wide range in how long fillers last, some last about four months with the average lasting twelve months, and some even last 24 months. So, depending on the area they are placed, your anatomy and goals, your doctor can help guide you in the direction of which filler is the best choice for you.

Another popular less known in-office procedure is biostimulatory fillers such as Sculptra and Radiesse. These are fillers which volumize over time by stimulating your own natural collagen production, we call them fertilizer for your skin. These fillers last two or more years and are good for full facial rejuvenation since they help with skin quality and loss of volume. These fillers are also great to use in areas off the face for crepey skin such as on the neck, chest, arms, thighs, abdomen and above the knees. These fillers do take 6-12

weeks for full results, since your body has to make its own collage. In addition, a series of treatments, usually 2-3 sessions over time are recommended depending on the area and what we are trying to correct.

The most common concern I hear from my patients, and their significant others, is they are scared they won’t look like themselves or will look overdone. As a board certified dermatologist and expert injector, I can confidently say that if you go to the right board certified cosmetic physician you will walk out of their office looking rejuvenated, refreshed and like a refined version of yourself. It’s always important to take your time, research your physician injector, and ask lots of questions.

If you are thinking about trying neuromodulators or fillers, or have more questions please come in for a complimentary consultation. Both Dr. Skylar Souyoul, board certified dermatologist, and Dr. Lindsey Pennington, double board certified facial plastic surgeon, are accepting new patients.

What is Occupational Therapy?

As an occupational therapist, I am frequently asked what it is that I actually do. Specifically, in the field of pediatrics, how do I help children in their daily lives? Occupational therapy has many levels that tend to place the specifics in a “grey” area. While in school, navigating this was one of the more frustrating aspects. Now it is one of my favorite elements in my profession.

Occupational therapy utilizes a holistic approach to treat underlying deficits that impair a child’s ability to engage in activities that he or she needs or wants to do on a daily basis.

Pediatric occupational therapy treatment takes a familycentered approach to include the caregivers' concerns within the plan of care.

These concerns often sound something like this:

“He is having a hard time paying attention in class and his teacher reports that she is unable to read his handwriting.”

“She has a very limited diet; she eats chicken nuggets - but only from certain fast-food restaurants. She refuses chicken nuggets that I make at home.”

“She has difficulties tying her shoes, catching a ball, and buttoning her pants.”

“He is constantly moving, bouncing off the walls and seems to never run out of energy. It is hard for us to go places as a family due to safety concerns.”

“He is unable to sit on his own, but I want him to be as independent as possible. I would like for him to hold his bottle on his own and one-day feed himself with a utensil.”

Occupational therapists are experts at activities analysis - what does this mean?

An activity analysis breaks down an activity into the following categories: objects and properties, sequencing, body functions, motor analysis, performance skills, therapeutic purpose, and grading. In school this is a lengthy written document detailing every aspect of an activity. In daily life, an activity analysis takes place in a matter of moments. We are able to take an activity and adjust it to meet the child where he or she is while improving skills that need strengthening.

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s development, do not hesitate to contact a clinic near you to see if occupational therapy may be the right solution in helping your child thrive. An Occupational Therapist can do a quick phone evaluation to determine if occupational therapy would be beneficial for your child.

70

If Occupational Therapy is recommended what comes next?

1. Contact your child’s pediatrician to discuss your concerns. If using insurance, a referral will be required. Even if you choose to not use insurance and go the private pay route, a referral is strongly recommended so all members of the child’s healthcare team are on the same page and working together.

2. Select your desired clinic for services - referrals are often faxed to the clinic of choice Do your research! Word of mouth is a great resource.

3. Schedule an evaluation - if you do not hear from the clinic, reach out to ensure they have received the referral.

What to expect during an evaluation?

An evaluation typically takes place over the course of an hour, depending on a few factors. During this time expect to fill out paperwork and answer questions regarding birth, development, and areas of concern. A standardized test is typically given in order to establish a baseline and determine if therapy is warranted based on scores obtained. This will be the time to express any and all concerns. The more information you provide the better a therapist will be able to help. Don’t hold back!

Following this visit a written evaluation is generated and goals are established to increase independence and track progress along the course of treatment.

he homework fight ensues again with the aggressive behavior and the meltdowns, the exhausting hours of fussing and sitting at the table, throwing tantrums and complete drama. When will it ever end? These are the comments and questions heard by many counselors and therapists as well as educational resource personnel on a daily basis. The question remains… is my child being lazy or are they truly struggling with learning issues? How do I know? The school says nothing is wrong, but I cannot do this anymore!

Dyslexia has as many as 9-12 types depending on which expert you are looking to and not all of these are addressed in the same manner at all. Dyslexia is usually defined as a processing issue of linguistic origin in a neurotypical person. However, there are neurodivergent thinkers who also struggle with the same cognitive weaknesses evident in dyslexic students of all ages.

The first step to understanding whether there is authentically an issue is by getting an assessment of the cognitive skills and looking at whether those skills are prevalently low or are there just gaps caused by interruptions in the learning process such as we see with the Summer Slide and Covid Learning Gap.

The second step is understanding the underlying weaknesses and choosing and interventional model that will best sui t the learner and the family in getting the most out of the precious amount of time that you have with a child in the learning process.

Dr. J. Stuart Ablon in his book change*able, discusses how the lack of skill is the issue rather than a child willingly being defiant or lazy. In his book, Dr. Ablon, the Director of Think: Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital, shares how collaborative problem solving and realization/ intervention of skill sets can change lives at home, school and at work. Recognizing that weak cognitive skills (IQ) and weaknesses in emotional IQ or ability to handle new situations and adapt can affect a person’s behavior whether the person is a child or an adult. The ability to recognize and address the weaknesses is one key to making change in daily lives. By identifying the underlying skill weaknesses in emotional

and cognitive thinking processes, one can become more aware and reach out by getting the assistance needed to address these underlying weaknesses. One video of his Tedx Talk, Dr. J. Stuart Ablon: Kids Lack Skills, Not Will to Do WellYouTube, shares how training the skill boosts the motivation.

Another approach to this same principle is called Growth Mindset by Dr. Carole Dweck. In her book, MINDSET: the new psychology of success, Stanford Psychologist, Dr. Dweck coined the term “Growth Mindset” which says that adopting the belief that talent can be developed with hard work, determination and help from others promotes growth. Those with a fixed mindset, however, believe their intelligence and skills are innate and therefore unlikely to be improved upon. In her research, she was able to demonstrate that mindset matters and is trainable. In

her multitude of talks, books, and videos, she shares her thoughts and research on how our perspective on learning truly matters. Teaching a Growth Mindset -Carol Dweck - YouTube. The human brain is always growing, changing, learning and the perspective that learning and growing should be a journey that is an adventure and fun is one that I hold along with many other educational professionals and cognitive scientists of all walks. Learning is an ongoing process of life and understanding one’s own strengths and weaknesses in this process is a particularly important piece of that process.

Back to the question: is it a learning issue ora laziness issue?

Aren’t they one and the same? Personally,

I am lazy about doing the things that are hard and not enjoyable to me as most of us are. We do them only because they

must be done and some of us put it off forever (procrastinators), while others just do it to get it over with, (rushers). Learning should be about the joy of the process. School isn’t fun to those who struggle because of their skills. Behaving, problem solving, dealing with difficult decisions, even cleaning the bedroom isn’t always about unwillingness, many times it is lack of skill not will. Again, that first step is the knowledge of skill. Is the child, teen or adult who is having the difficulty unable to do or unwilling to do? How do you know? Have you assessed the abilities?

Dyslazia doesn’t have to be the way of thinking. Overwhelmed brains do not have to be the norm. Meltdowns and shutdowns should not be commonplace. Addressing the underlying weaknesses and being purposeful in our approach to others can be life changing for everyone around us. If you or someone you love struggles with learning or behavior, no matter what their age, it is not too late nor too early. Intervention is possible. Reach out to community resources around you. Whether the person has a learning difference that needs to be addressed or they need to address behavioral concerns, resources are available in our community.

DOES THE POWER OF A WOMAN

Determine Her Level of Success?

in a position of power can be a dangerous thing because, more often than not, she is motivated by emotion rather than reason or logic. This is what a man might say. In reality, women in power can function using emotion while also being logical and rational. This is how a woman of power should act. People confuse power with money and money with success. For a woman to be considered powerful, she must have secured all three (reasoning, emotion and logic) characteristics and, most of the time, still work twice as hard, be paid half as much, and be seen or considered after all her male counterparts.

Awoman

It was rare to see women of power who looked like me; being born and raised in a small city in Louisiana as a young girl of color in the 1970s. My mother was educated, hardworking and had many firsts as a woman of color in her profession, but even so, her first title to many was and will always be Mrs. Frank Williams, Jr. Now, I ask a question my mother asked and her mother before her and now me. How do you break the glass ceiling in a room or secure a seat at a table where you have not been invited, where you are not welcome and where no one in attendance looks like you?

Can you imagine a world without the power of women? Is it possible for a woman to wield power without reference to her gender? Can she prove herself competent, effective, and articulate without being dismissed as either a bitch or a bimbo? When I started my company, My Spa My Way, I was constantly told I did not look like what the beauty industry expected. I did not have the right body type, my skin was the wrong color or just not pretty enough. Neither was I a gay man with a bubbly personality.

I was told I was living in another world If I thought a young black woman could have a place where all races and genders could come together to enjoy services in peace. Well, fifteen years later, I am still here. I completely own this curvy body, dark skin, short hair, and the personality God

intended for me to have. I had the guts to persevere.

And speaking of guts, this brings me to why I am creating an inaugural G.U.T.S. (Girls United To Succeed) Awards event that will be honoring women from Shreveport who have shattered the glass ceiling and earned a seat at the table in industries where the entrance was difficult but the reward was priceless. These ladies have opened the doors for women who look like them to not only be invited into the room but to have their presence commanded by others. Their power was fueled by never-ending rejections, recreating and rebranding themselves, and accepting No as a maybe which inevitably became their Yes. Ask yourself do you have the G.U.T.S. to turn your No into a YES?

Gertrude’s Gifts, a non-profit local organization that mentors young girls in grade school, was born out of missing my grandmother, Gertrude Hill, who passed away in 2009. She was the source of power and beauty who constantly affirmed that the physical stature I held, the complexion that I was blessed with, and the locks of hair of my ancestors would always be beautiful and always be more than enough to become whatever I wanted to become. My grandmother never saw me as her ADHD, overly energetic, always talking chubby granddaughter. She saw me as me; a beautiful child of God. Gertrude’s Gift’s mission is to help all girls feel positive about themselves and their body image to enhance their self-esteem and confidence.

The G.U.T.S. Awards event will be an evening of fundraising for Gertrude’s Gifts, high fashion and inspiration that will be held at Sam’s Town and Casino on Friday, October 7th from 6pm to 10pm. More information and ticket pricing it is available on Facebook.

The mission and purpose of Gertrude’s Gifts is to partner with existing organizations to complement work, life, and social skills. Empowering our participants with selfworth, self-esteem, hygiene, etiquette, and other life and social skills in the hope of them moving through life as productive women and young ladies. The average client coming from shelters, homelessness, violence, abuse, and an untraditional family life typically have one thing in common with today’s average family. The struggle with self-worth, self-esteem, and bullying can destroy an individual regardless of education or financial worth. Allowing our participants to understand the need to socialize with employers, coworkers, and clients helps increase their longevity in the workplace and the desire to learn more and be more productive in life. Teaching our young ladies today the value of one’s self early lays the foundation for a strong woman tomorrow.

We empower women and young ladies at all levels to develop their natural abilities to their fullest potential and equip them to excel as leaders of their workplaces and communities across all spheres of society.

Gertrude’s Gifts would like to teach business etiquette, professional image consulting, and conflict resolution in work and schools. Our goal is to incorporate professional hair and makeup techniques, proper business attire, workplace etiquette, and financial literacy training. Enhancing these skill sets of our participants will give them an even better chance of success as they matriculate through life.

Kristen Powers is the Executive Director for The Arc Caddo-Bossier, an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving hundreds of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through its variety of residential and employment programs, equine assisted services (GREAT) and a child development center, Goldman School.

A Shreveport native, Kristen attended LSU Baton Rouge where she earned her undergraduate degree in mass communications prior to receiving her MBA from the University of New Orleans School of Business. Her background in corporate communications and fund development includes marketing, public relations, advocacy, social media and business development. She worked in the New Orleans market before Hurricane Katrina, which led her to move back to Shreveport where she has made a career primarily serving in healthcare and nonprofit organizations. In her current role, Kristen leads The Arc Caddo-Bossier and raises funds to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities in the community.

Kristen has served as a member of Rotary International since 2007. She is a founder and pastPresident of the northwest chapter of the Public Relations Association of Louisiana and has been a member of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier since 2009. She and her family are active members of First Baptist Church Shreveport.

Kristen married Ashley Powers in November 2013 and the two have a 6-year-old son, Hollis, and a 3 year-old daughter, Mary Olive.

Kristen Gary Powers, MBA Executive Director

Megann McDaniel, with McDaniel Financial, recently sat down with Kristen Powers to discuss her role at The Arc Caddo-Bossier and what the organization means to her.

Q1. You have held a variety of jobs in the nonprofit sector, most recently with The Arc Caddo-Bossier. Have you intentionally selected jobs in organizations that are charitable and mission-driven, or was that by accident?

Every role I’ve held in the past helped prepare me for my current position. I have always been drawn to the nonprofit sector and knew I wanted to be in a leadership role. Having a mission-centered career is not something I have necessarily sought intentionally, but it certainly brings me a great deal of satisfaction to know the work I do is helping build unlimited opportunities for people with disabilities in our community. That is the expressed mission of The Arc Caddo-Bossier. My role as Executive Director allows me to partner with private businesses to expand on this mission and allow local businesses to be a part of something really cool… inclusion of people with disabilities in all of life’s roles.

Q2. I first met you during a Rotary group study exchange to Thailand. That experience changed my life and outlook on the world. I'm curious to know if the experience had the same impact on you.

Yes! Our trip to Thailand totally changed my life and I will always be grateful to Rotary International for making it possible through their Group Study Exchange (GSE) program. We spent five extraordinary weeks there immersed in a culture so different from our own. The trip also helped me to realize some common threads that run through humanity no matter the country or customs. Having experienced different ways of life helps me to have a greater world view as I form my opinions.

When I returned from that trip, I became involved in Rotary, which stands for “service above self” and gained a great friend in you (Megann Hayes McDaniel)! You then introduced me to my husband. So, when I say “our trip changed my life” I mean it… I would not be married to my husband or have my children if I had not gone on that trip to Thailand in 2007.

The hospitality of the Thai people made an impression on me. No matter their social status – wealthy or living in poverty – the people we met welcomed us and offered us what they had available. I hope to emulate that in both my professional and personal life.

Q3. What do you see as the challenges facing businesses or charities in Shreveport?

Staffing is our greatest challenge at The Arc Caddo-Bossier. We are working to raise funds and have successfully advocated for better rates for our services so that we can pay more competitive wages to our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who are truly the heroes of our community, those who are doing some of the toughest jobs because of their love and commitment to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Q4. What are the blessings and opportunities that we have for businesses and charities in Shreveport?

Our community is so generous. We are blessed to have many local businesses and foundations willing to partner with nonprofits for the greater good. Thankfully, the energy industry provides some economic stability to our region, allowing local nonprofits to continue to benefit through tough economic times experienced nationally.

Q5. You've told me before that any time you think you're having a bad day just come visit me at The Arc and your outlook will change. You explain that people with disabilities often live with so much joy and love and offer such kindness. Can you explain that to someone who has never visited The Arc’s homes or programs? Would you encourage others to experience life alongside someone with a disability?

While I welcome the opportunity to take someone on a tour of the Conly Day Program at Frost Industries and love seeing the faces of visitors to The Goldman School and Child Development Center or GREAT Equine Assisted Therapies, you do not have to visit one of our buildings to experience The Arc Caddo-Bossier. At the core of what we do is community integration. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are living in community integrated settings,

apartments, individual houses, and in our community homes. They are working alongside us as our coworkersthey are our neighbors, our friends and fellow church members. Many people with disabilities have a way of seeing the world that is not clouded with negativity and fear. This allows them to live in the moment, something we could all learn from. They are people, just like you and me, and they have their own unique passions, interests and goals. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more about what The Arc Caddo-Bossier is doing to follow us on Facebook and Instagram or visit www.thearccaddobossier.org. Q6. You have a young daughter, Mary Olive, who I have to say is absolutely precious. Has your outlook on careers changed now that you have a young daughter? If so, in what way? Is there anything you try to model or teach Mary Olive?

There do seem to be more women in nonprofit leadership positions, but I’m not really sure I have the answer as to why. It does seem to be trending that more women are entering executive roles with for-profit businesses as well, but perhaps did not accelerate as quickly as it seems to have in the nonprofit sector.

As a wife, mom and Executive Director, work-life balance is difficult. Thankfully, I had a very wise person give me some encouragement early on, when I was a new mother. I was traveling for work during my first child’s school Easter egg hunt and I was really struggling with missing it. One of the people on the trip with me who was a more experienced parent told me that my son would probably not remember me missing his first egg hunt, but he would remember his mom working to make a difference. I want my children to know that they can make a difference, not just talk the talk. And, I want them to know how to take action to make an impact. I do not miss too many life moments, but when I do it is for a mission driven purpose.

Q7. You have accomplished much in your relatively short career. Do

you have advice for young women starting out or mothers who are trying to set a positive example for their children?

You don’t have to be the CEO to make a difference. You can be a leader no matter your title. We all lead by making proactive smart decisions that add value to the mission. Every day you have a choice… to get up “and do the next right thing” like the Frozen II song sung by Kristen Bell as Anna.

Be a team player. I have a wonderful team of leaders who are the directors of our programs and services at The Arc Caddo-Bossier. We call this group L-10 (Leadership Ten) which represents the level of excellence we are working for –and there also just happens to be 10 leaders on this team. They are difference makers. But, even more importantly, they are the messengers for the difference makers at all levels of the organization.

Take action. When you see things in the world that you want to change for the better, do it. The ripple effect will be beyond what you can imagine. I think this is why I love working in an organization like The Arc CaddoBossier. Everything I do – WE do, as a team – is in an effort to improve the lives of our co-workers and the people with disabilities that we serve.

H ASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS

In the past couple of weeks, I have encountered several patients…new, existing and referred that I’ve diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It’s not a rare thyroid disease, yet numerous people are suffering and don’t have to. Are you curious if you or your loved ones are unnecessarily burdened with this somewhat overlooked disease? Come with me and discover more about this thyroid disorder. This information will transform your health…really your life.

WHAT IF BRAIN FOG, MEMORY LOSS, EXHAUSTION, WEIGHT GAIN AND PAIN ARE DUE TO LOW THYROID HORMONE (HYPOTHYROIDISM)?

In numerus discussions with patients, the conventional medical system has discounted the individuals who have these symptoms. The symptoms are attributed to anxiety, depression, or hypochondria.

WHAT IF MY SYMPTOMS CONTINUE EVEN THOUGH I AM ON THYROID MEDICATION?

A recent patient on thyroid medication had a normal TSH (thyroid hormone stimulating hormone), indicating the current treatment was in therapeutic range. But the fatigue and memory issues were frustrating. A more detailed thyroid evaluation revealed thyroid antibodies, indicating an autoimmune process. Armed with new information, a different treatment strategy addressing the autoimmune issue was started. The goal is better control over the immune system and thyroid antibodies.

WHAT IS IT? DO YOU HAVE IT? WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT? 87

Let’s

Thyroid Gland

The thyroid is a small gland located in the anterior neck. But it packs a punch in regulating body function. Important thyroid hormones regulate heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, body temperature, metabolism, and menstrual cycle. The thyroid affects every organ in the body.

HYPOTHYROIDISM

is a Deficiency in Thyroid Hormone

HASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS

A unique form of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune issue with a genetic predisposition. Over fourteen million Americans suffer from Hashimoto’s disease.

Symptoms can be a combination of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Why?

At first, the thyroid gland still puts out thyroid hormone. The problem is the body’s immune system sees the thyroid cells as foreign and has developed antibodies to the cells. The cells can be damaged or destroyed.

Initially in the attack, the hormone is released into circulation, causing excess hormone levels. Once the hormone is cleared from the body, the person becomes hypothyroid. The damaged gland has difficulty making thyroid hormone. ISSUES CAN ALSO OCCUR:

THE CHALLENGE FOR PEOPLE WITH HASHIMOTO’S DISEASE IS THEY EXPERIENCE OTHER INFLAMMATORY SYMPTOMS.

• Irritable bowel syndrome

• Pain

What is going on?

The body is a complex system. A person with Hashimoto’s disease can have multiple symptoms related to a chronic immune system overload.

So, what’s the issue?

Hashimoto’s disease is frequently lumped into hypothyroidism as a broad category. Once the diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made, the conventional medical model may not pursue further diagnostic evaluation. The hypothyroidism is treated with hormone replacement. But the underlying immune system issues are ignored.

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?

Action Or Inaction? Which will you regret more?

Regret has a profound impact on how we live our lives. It is the difference between living the healthy life we are meant to live or simply getting by. And, by simply getting by, our health could get worse.

There are two types of regret. The regret of action is doing something we wish we hadn’t done. The regret of inaction is doing something we wish we had done. Really, it is the fear of change.

Acting on your health changes your life. If you have Hashimoto’s disease, what steps are you willing to take to improve your health?

Step 1. Learn more about Hashimoto’s disease

Step 2. If you have uncontrolled Hashimoto’s disease, take some initial steps to begin the healing process.

Eliminate sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, coffee, and alcohol.

Step 3. Seek help from a healthcare provider who listens to you and understands the root causes of illnesses like Hashimoto’s disease.

Minding the Gap:

An Adventure in Parenting Tweens

opportunity to use the restroom on break but only a 3-minute time slot to do it. The consequence of choosing poorly can mean infractions and resulting lunch detention.

Freedom of choice also has rules for your breaking. That’s real-world stuff. The mama dilemma is our mental rolodex of pigtailed childhood images and fighting back the urge to think that she’s not ready.

ASa young adult I never imagined the picture of raising children to involve me lying face down in the yard with turf in my teeth. And yet, here I am. I blame middle school as it is, most assuredly, a contact sport.

This fall, my youngest entered 6th grade and marked my permanent moming transition from childhood to tweendom. It’s an awkward feeling knowing the door to simpler days has been slammed shut and sealed. And so here I stand in the pantry of middle school mom choices forgetting what I came in here to retrieve.

We’ve stepped into the big leagues of sink or swim. There’s

The thing that’s unnerving about parenting tweens is the unpredictable nature of what’s coming next. It’s like a game of dodgeball. Shots are being fired at you constantly from all angles, and while you know that the shot from the rubber ball is not likely to be painful, you stand at the ready to bat them down.

This new phase of life has us searching for appropriate answers to awkward questions. Pat and I have settled on an “ask me anything, and I’ll tell you the truth” policy. We try to keep in mind that while explaining the details of sexuality and puberty aloud is uncomfortable, mustering the courage to not only ask the question but listening to your parent’s answer is probably worse.

I’ve found that the emotional roller coaster that comes along with changing hormones is more difficult to keep in check. I have an entirely different mental rolodex of images and words that flash through my brain when dealing with eyerolling, attitudes, and disrespectful comments. I try to remind myself that the kids are learning to test their limits, and it’s our job to show them the boundary line. Pat is much better at this than me. He stops the kids as they are approaching the line. I wait until they step on it, and I then either act like a complete maniac or take their door off the hinges.

Then there’s our responsibility to teach responsibility to the kids. Once again, Pat’s methods in this parenting category have proven more effective than mine. As the kids have grown, so has our to-do list. Today, there’s more laundry, dishes, and trash than in previous years. In an effort to spread out the chores, we’ve created the rule that the people who eat without preparing the meal have dish duty.

On one such occasion, sissy and I had spent that

Our kitchen erupted into laughter.
Everyone was laughing everyone but Pat.
92

better part of an afternoon cooking dinner. Cam and Pat cleaned out the garage while Dakota gamed. After dinner, the rest of us carried our dishes to the sink and walked away. Dakota reluctantly slinked into the kitchen and grabbed the sprayer. He worked for several minutes, and then declared that he was finished. Pat, toting his ever-present follow through, headed to the kitchen to inspect his work.

Through an audible exhale, Pat called Dakota back to the work site. Holding up a pan, Pat calmly said, “Son, if you were going to wipe your butt…” He paused 5 seconds for effect. Pointing to the half-scrubbed dish, Pat continued, “would you leave that much trash in there?” The rest of us held our breath. You could hear a pin drop. Finally, Pat said, “This is what we called a ‘half-assed’ effort.” Our kitchen erupted into laughter. Everyone was laughing—everyone but Pat. That lesson hasn’t had to be taught again.

We’re finding that getting their attention when teaching lessons requires different tactics than before. Much like the shots being fired at us, we must be prepared to volley the ball back in relevant ways. It’s necessary that we differentiate between the times to show our vulnerability and the times to draw a boundary. It’s instructing them on how to enjoy the humor of Adam Sandler while also not repeating the behavior modeled in the movie.

The cliques and comebacks, braces and body odor, cafeteria fights and contact sports of middle school are part of the journey to adulthood. The other half of that is long division and Narnia. I’m convinced that teaching middle school is a calling much like that of the ministry. I’m thankful that God called me to serve elsewhere.

God did, however, call me into parenthood. I lovingly refer to this season of my calling as “minding the gap.” According to Wikipedia, “mind the gap” is an audible or visual warning phrase issued to rail passengers to take caution while crossing the horizontal, and in some cases vertical, spatial gap between the train door and the station platform. Our spatial gap is tweendom.

Pat was playing all-time pitcher because 5 people won’t divide evenly into teams. Cam and I were opposing the twins. Dylan was up to bat. Cam guarded first base while I filled the short-stop gap. We were confident that the ball wouldn’t be kicked past the infield, so we positioned ourselves for the out. As expected, she popped the ball up.

“My ball,” I thought as I advanced quickly forward. “This will be great,” my thoughts continued. “Cam will be so proud. We could win this thing, and little brother could have bragging rights for the rest of the week.” I was determined to catch that ball. Just as my fingertips were in reach of the red rubber, a shadow descended over me. It was a train-barreling husband shadow. It hit me like a ping pong paddle pummels a hollow ball. My body was sent stumbling in the opposite direction toward the chain link fence.

Our kids watched in slow motion as their parents attempted to wrestle their way out of slamming into the fence. I landed face first in the dirt with Pat’s arms underneath me—his desperate attempt to break my fall. Neither of us caught the ball. Once my eyeballs stopped rolling around in my head, I sat up to see our kids standing nearby, mouths gapping open. Our laughter from reliving the moment lasted longer than our bruises. I’ve since learned to call my catches.

But that’s the way of minding the tween gap. Sometimes we’re so focused on outcomes for the kids that we run slap over our partner. Disaster can be averted if we take time to communicate with one another. It’s then that we get the win without the dirt aftertaste.

I’ve often wondered why people renew their vows. Now I know that some unexpected antonyms need to be added. The first time around did not include child-rearing before and after puberty. Although the Denneys aren’t walking down the beach dressed in white to recommit to what we started almost 20 years ago, we’re still showing up for one another. We’ve never stopped. And we’re seeing this through—in sickness and in health and as we fall apart. Now someone send me a recommendation for a chiropractor.

The best part of my parenting journey is learning to row in the same direction as my partner. So how did I end up with turf in my teeth? At our house the vulnerability / boundary balance involves a lot of play. It’s a solid outlet that recharges everyone’s batteries. On one such occasion, we engaged in a backyard kickball game.

verything was bigger in the 80s: big hair, big shoulder pads, big cell phones! Well, get ready for a BIG time when you join Loyola College Prep’s Class of 2023 for this year’s 69th Annual Style Show, “I Want My MTV…LCP!” Joe Cool Snoopy and our 94 Seniors will rock ‘n’ roll down the runway while modeling totally tubular fashions from local clothiers.

The Loyola Style Show, sponsored by the Loyola Parents’ Association, is chaired this year by Hope Ghali and Minou Olsan.

The Style Show has a lasting history at LCP dating back to 1952, a rite of passage for graduating Seniors.

“We are seriously stoked about this year’s Style Show,” said Ghali. “We want our Seniors to have a radical time and feel celebrated. There was no other option than to go BIG with our gnarly, 80s theme. It’s going to be a schweet time!”

During the show, Loyola Seniors will take the stage in groups “modeling” outfits from gracious local stores. In addition there is always a Senior Walk spotlighting each and every graduate. And as if that were not enough, a time honored tradition is the Alumni Walk where Seniors join their parents and/or grandparents who were graduates of the following institutions; St. John’s, Jesuit, Loyola, Notre Dame, and St. Vincent Academy in Shreveport; for a special stroll.

All Flyer Alumni and Family, as well as Future Flyers, are invited to join in this bodacious bash! With special seating available for each of these groups, the Style Show is a great way to reconnect with long lost pals and meet some new dudes too!

Shaver’s Catering will serve a radical meal which is included in the admission price.

WHY GIVE BLOOD? BACK Spotlight:

One of every seven people who enter the hospital will need blood. That person maybe you, your loved one, friend, or co-worker. With all the wonderful advances in modern medicine, there still is NO substitute for human blood. The blood that helps patients comes only from caring people who volunteer to help others by donating their life-saving blood.

In the short time it took to read the above paragraph, 11 people needed blood. Will you help?

WHO NEEDS BLOOD? >> LifeShare must collect approximately 500 units a day to meet patient’s blood needs throughout our communities. Volunteer blood donors are the source and lifeline of hope for these patients.

HOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF DONATIONS HELP PATIENTS >> Based on your blood type and patient needs, giving the right type of blood donation helps ensure the best use of your life-saving gift.

WHOLE BLOOD DONATION >> Whole blood donations are the oldest form and traditional type of donation. Whole blood is transfused to help patients when separated into its specific components of red cells, platelets, and plasma.

Patients helped: This procedure helps patients who undergo surgery or trauma.

Total time: About 1 hour

Donation time: 15 minutes or less

How often can you donate? Every 56 days

SUPER RED OR DOUBLE RED CELL DONATION >> Power red donations improve safety for patients and donors. A smaller needle is used in the automated process and results in only the donation of red blood cells — the most needed blood component. The donor loses less blood overall and the patient receives two doses of red cells from the same donor.

Patients helped: This procedure helps pediatric patients, trauma or surgery patients, and people with severe anemia.

Needed Blood Types: O-, O+, B+, & B-

Total time: About 1 hour and 15 minutes

Donation time: About 30 minutes

How often can you donate? Every 112 days—up to three times a year

EVERY TWO SECONDS, SOMEONE SOMEWHERE NEEDS BLOOD.

PLATELET DONATION >> Platelets are the cells that circulate within our blood and bind together when they recognize damaged blood cells. Platelets can only be donated at a LifeShare donor center. Donors who give platelets do not give red cells during the donation process. Platelet donors are frequently needed because the shelf-life for platelets is only a few days (some of our platelets are becoming 7 and 14 day products)

Patients helped: Patients with blood disorders, open heart surgery, organ transplant, and cancer patients.

Needed Blood Types: A+, A-, B+, AB+, & AB Total time: About 2 to 2.5 hours

Donation time: 1.5 to 2 hours

How often can you donate? Every seven days, or up to 24 times a year

PLASMA DONATION >> Plasma is the liquid component of blood and transports cells, proteins, hormones, and vitamins. Your plasma contains proteins which defend our bodies against invaders and help blood to clot.

Patients helped: Patients with severe burns, clotting disorders, or in shock.

Needed Blood Types: AB+ & ABTotal time: About 1.5 to 2 hours

Donation time: 30-45 minutes

How often can you donate? Every 28 days, or up to 13 times a year.
