Landscapes The Value of Owning a Private Garden Some Real Solutions for Developing Privacy in Your Own Landscape BY BILL HENKEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HENKEL When designing and planting your home landscape, privacy is a component that should always be taken into consideration. Employing certain plants can increase the use and enjoyment of your yard. We all need a little time to ourselves, whether it’s to read a book, take a nap or just clear your head. A secluded garden can be just the spot for a relaxing and quiet getaway that’s right outside your own home. Plants that help create a private usable outdoor area can also provide other benefits as well. They can protect not only your home, but you from the elements. For instance, the shade created by a plant is much more enjoyable on a hot summer day than being in the full sun. They can also form a sound barrier that will decrease the noise from a busy street. Planting a well designed outdoor space with a clear relationship to the functions of a home can increase the livable area and add value to a property.

Design and planning are keys to this discussion, especially when we are using plant materials to help us develop our landscapes and create a sense of place. Without this you only have a space with no meaning or function. By utilizing these tools, a private functioning garden can be developed no matter what existing landscape we have to start with. Whether you have a newer home in a new development with few trees or you live in an older home in an old neighborhood with some established trees and shrubs, there are countless obtainable solutions. The following list of plants will be of some value as you begin to think about developing your personal garden space with plant material.

2 Mint julep juniper is a fast growing and broad spreading evergreen shrub, that tolerates dry conditions and does not require regular pruning, matures at 12’x12’.

1 1 Green giant arborvitae is a robust and fast growing evergreen tree for Kentucky landscapes reaching heights of 60’.

2

3 Alleghany viburnum is a fast growing semi‐evergreen shrub in Kentucky. It adapts to many different growing conditions, but does best in non‐ windy sites.

3

13

5 5 Foster holly is a perfect evergreen for smaller spaces. It is a moderate grower to 20’ that responds well to pruning and wind protection.

4 4 Sweetbay magnolia is a favorite in the Bluegrass. A moderate grower that has mint green leaves with silver on the underside. It produces fragrant blooms in late spring. Hardy and pest free.

6 Columnar and American hornbeam are medium growers with dense attractive foliage. They are very hardy and respond well to pruning. No real disease or pest problems.

6 7 Hydrangea tardiva is an excellent grower with vivid white blooms and attractive green foliage.

7 14

8

8 Taxus capitata grows in sun and shade although at different rates. It is very hardy and disease resistant, but will not tolerate wet feet.

9 Bottlebrush buckeye is a Kentucky native that grows in shade and semi shade. It is leafy with attractive blooms, fruits and provides fall color.

9 There are different degrees of privacy from total opacity to the thinly veiled. You have to know what you need for your own comfort level. The examples in these photographs are proven performers. There are many others to choose from with endless opportunities for effective attractive combinations. Always consult your landscape professional; preferably a Kentucky registered landscape architect. These are trained; experienced and tested individuals that can help you develop your garden or landscape into your own personal paradise.

Barley Twist A Style for the Ages BY JERRY SHROUT PHOTOGRAPHY BY WALT ROYCRAFT

1 2 Illustrating diferent sizes, we see here 2 pairs of 19th century English Barley Twist candlesticks, ca. 1880.

2 16

The enduring and popular style known as Barley Twist draws its roots from Spanish influence, dating back to the 1600’s. Also known as “sugar twist”, probably due to the resemblance of the twisted design to sticks of barley sugar that were used during this time; the barley twist style has continued to inspire furniture and accessory design to the present. Currently, furniture designers still derive creative muse from the barley twist styles of the previous centuries. Most of what is present in today’s antique world is the Barley twist furniture from the late 19th century. Resembling a twisted rope, Barley Twist flourished from the mid 1600’s to 1700, then fell out of favor for at least 100 years. Finally in the late 1800’s Barley Twist came back, and was heavily produced, including Barley twist candlesticks, dropleaf tables, chairs, bookcases, and even Grandfather clocks.

4 4 Dark Oak Barley Twist gate-leg dining table with scalloped edge.

Almost exclusively produced in dark English Oak, Barley Twist is synonymous with the English Pub Style, which is now often seen in high end Gentlemen’s clothing shops and private clubs. During Queen Victoria’s reign, Barley Twist became very popular. As with all antique furniture, Barley Twist furniture and accessories were originally hand carved. However, with the advancement of technology, specifically with the development of the lathe, the Barley Twist style took on a more sophisticated distinction. For example, hollowed out, or “open weave” Barley twist designs started to be produced. Today, the open weave designs are more sought after and gain higher prices. As with all antiques, prices are driven by rarity, and with Barley Twist, the more rare the higher the price. The most common examples of Barley Twist are the candlesticks, and the most sought after are the open weave with brass “drips.” Also popular are the large traditional sticks with brass; but often collectors seek smaller sticks due to their more unusual size and uniqueness. Over the years, Barley Twist has continued to have an influence on modern furniture. Today, we see the twisted style of woodworking in current designs from popular high end manufacturers. Barley Twist is certainly a style for the ages. Jerry Shrout is the proprietor of Thoroughbred Antique Gallery in Lexington. Design Secrets Uncovered Your Upholstery Questions Answered BY CHRISTINA NOLL

Whether you’re redoing a room, moving to a larger home, or it’s just time to replace your favorite chair, you may have to decide between choosing all new furniture or reupholstering the items you already own. Reupholstering certainly seems like a good way to save money on furnishings, however only if it’s done correctly. We asked top design professionals Andra Gyor, co-owner of Janice’s at the Saltbox in Lexington and Juliannah Colson, Interior Designer at Carriage House Interiors in Louisville to answer our biggest questions about reupholstering furniture. Here’s what they had to say: When should I reupholster a piece of furniture versus replacing it entirely? Juliannah: “If your piece has excellent “bones,” meaning the interior of the furniture has a hardwood frame, eightway hand tying, spring down cushions, etc. then it’s a good idea to keep the piece and have a professional reupholster it. Most quality furniture manufacturers make exceptional pieces of furniture that warrant reupholstering.”

1 1 This 30-year old wingback has been recovered three times, and still looks and sits like it is brand new.

18

Andra: “If the piece of furniture is one that you absolutely love—whether because of the style, or for sentimental reasons, or if it has been handed down through your family—then that’s a good reason to recover.”

Know Your Fabric

2 2 Reupholstering in a transitional fabric makes this traditional wingback chair work with more contemporary decor.

3 3 This 50-year old chair is rehabilitated with a new, bright fabric.

Can I reupholster furniture myself or do I need to hire a professional? Andra: “If it’s a simple slip in seat reupholster, such as dining room chairs, you can do it yourself with a good staple gun. But I wouldn’t tackle recovering a sofa or chair. You need to leave that to a professional.” Juliannah: “I always recommend hiring a professional to handle large pieces. There is so much involved in upholstering furniture: the fabric choice, the pattern of the fabric, and the weave of the fabric—all contribute to ensuring a quality job. How much money will reupholstering save me? Juliannah: “Several factors determine expense for reupholster. For example: fabric cost (most quality upholstery fabrics will be upwards of $30-50/yard) and labor costs which run around $250 and up (depending on style of chair) to upholster. Andra: “Before you decide to reupholster, you have to ask yourself a few questions. First, is the piece of furniture in good shape or will you have to replace cushions, springs or webbing? If you get into all of that, then sometimes it can be more expensive to reupholster than to buy new. The other factor is the cost of fabric you’re selecting versus what the furniture company offers as an equivalent fabric. I think you can save a significant amount of money reupholstering, if you are evaluating everything.”

Higher grade fabric does not mean higher quality,” explains Juliannah. “It’s a common misconception. Fabrics are graded based on the cost to manufacture them. For example: the cost of the fiber (cotton vs. silk), the complexity of the pattern, and the print size and how difficult it is to match the pattern flow. There are many lower grade fabrics that are much more durable than higher grade ones. That is why it is so important to work with a good designer who can educate you on the correct fabric.”

What are the biggest mistakes I should avoid? Andra: “I think a big mistake is buying a piece of furniture based on cost alone. A cheap piece of furniture doesn’t give you the option of recovering at some point if that’s what you want to do. It doesn’t hold up the way a good, well-made piece does. Another big mistake is buying low quality fabric to reupholster. If you are paying someone to upholster your furniture but in two years the fabric is wearing out then you’ve wasted the labor cost and the fabric cost.” Juliannah: “Often, people choose to satisfy that impulse and buy a “grab and go” type sofa that some of the more popular catalog and department stores offer. Most clients don’t realize what is important in purchasing quality and choose to purchase based on merchandising in a pretty picture. One other mistake is that most clients believe that fabric upholstery is less expensive than leather and that is just false.” Any last advice when it comes to new upholstery? Juliannah: “Be patient. Any quality piece of furniture is usually made to order and it can take time to receive it. However, it is definitely worth the wait! Also, be mindful of what you want in a piece of upholstery. Ask questions about how it will be used before you shop. Andra: Don’t buy furniture if you only intend to toss it. It doesn’t last and it’s not ecologically sound. It just doesn’t make sense to buy a piece of furniture that you’re going to throw away. My theory is: buy it once. Buy a classic design and then recover it. www.kentuckyhomesandgardens.com

Pastoral Perfection BY KIRSTEN E. SILVEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY WALT ROYCRAFT

Encompassing nearly five acres of rolling bluegrass close to Richmond, Kentucky, the Barrett garden—much like the home itself—contains a variety of surprises at every turn, lending custom touches and amazing attention to detail in every aspect of the design. To achieve the desired effect, homeowners Jan and Kelly Barrett worked with landscape designer Charlie Hubbard

of Al’s Landscape Contractors to completely redo the hardscape and plantings, incorporating a variety of unique features throughout the garden. This includes a delightful fish pond, a variety of sculptures and other water features, a wrought-iron gazebo in what Jan jokingly calls the “south 40” and a whimsical gate topped by an arbor that beckons visitors to explore. “We’ve had the bronze statues of the little girl reading and little boy fishing for years,” Jan shared. “When we found them, our nieces and nephews were still small so it was really fun to have them in the garden.” The fish pond, which lies just off the home’s covered back porch and stylish outdoor living area, incorporates a built-in Koi shelf to protect them from winter cold and predators. The gazebo houses a table that is complete with chairs and chandelier, while the hardscape throughout the garden was crafted using both natural limestone and Belgard, which is a man-made material Hubbard selected for its durability, natural appearance and versatility. “We developed much of the new hardscape from manmade Belgard stone, which comes in a wide variety of shapes and forms,” Hubbard shared. “We also used it to create several custom-built columns.” Structure in the Barrett garden also comes in the form of neatly shaped taxus and boxwood hedges, ornamental grasses and a variety of evergreens. A metal sculpture of a crane peeks out from among the juniper growing around natural limestone that tops a waterfall (not pictured) and the bird has developed a striking patina over time. “The crane sculpture tricked our niece when she was small into believing it was real, from a distance,” shared Jan.

1 20

Today, the Barrett garden has matured into a lush and magical realm that consists of carefully planned outdoor living areas and clever focal points. The welldeveloped plantings are perfectly spaced and create a vivid palette of textured greens and ethereal whites with pops of surprising color placed at select intervals that feel organic yet perfectly planned. Offering plenty of space for entertaining, relaxing, or simply enjoying the expansive vistas and unique garden rooms, this outdoor space is quintessential Kentucky at its finest.

2 1 Stained glass panels depicting idyllic stylized nature scenes adorn the wrought-iron gazebo, lending pops of color and smooth, reflective texture to the space. 2 Framing the view approaching the home’s covered back porch and main outdoor living area, this extended border adds structure to the garden and features an organically shaped perimeter wall that was handcrafted using natural creek stones and is backed by the clean lines of sculpted boxwoods, a holly tree and viburnum. 3 A wrought-iron gate and arbor sourced in Mexico adorns the entrance to the home’s outdoor living and garden areas. Flanked by mandevillas, million bells, hydrangeas and nicely-sculpted boxwoods, the curved walkway is crafted from durable Belgard pavers set in a natural pattern.

4 A wrought-iron gazebo found at Cowgirl’s Attic serves as a charming focal point. It is adorned with several types of clematis that bloom three or four times each year and will eventually cover the entire structure. A small water feature, ornamental grasses, boxwoods and taxus hedges lend added interest, while dogwood and Norway spruce complete the scene. 5 This endearing bronze statue of a little girl reading is currently found lounging among the carefully trimmed taxus hedge next to the home’s covered back porch, which also serves as a stylish outdoor living and dining area.

5

6 Perched atop a waterfall amid the juniper growing around natural limestone, this metal crane has a deceptively natural appearance from a distance and has developed a gorgeous rusted patina over time. 7 Situated adjacent to a beautifully finished covered deck and outdoor living area, the 600-gallon fish pond has a decidedly natural feel, with real limestone, water lilies and green liriope. A bronze statue of a boy fishing is perched along a Japanese-style wooden walkway, lending a surprising touch of whimsy to the scene. 8 A delicate water lily seems to float effortlessly amid the lily pads upon the surface of the fish pond, adding a bit of texture and visual interest to the pool.

Water features evoke an almost immediate sense of tranquility and go a long way toward transforming any outdoor area from mediocre to majestic. For centuries, decorative fountains and water features have adorned public squares, royal palaces, grand estates and—more recently—many typical backyard gardens and outdoor living areas. In 21st-century luxury residential landscape design, water features have evolved into more than just mere focal points, becoming more like works of art and hightech aquatic showpieces that are often complete with waterfalls, pools and ponds, LED lighting and fire pits, positioned alongside outdoor kitchens and other exterior living areas to provide a visual and auditory treat for the senses. “Keep the location close to other outdoor living areas so the water feature is easy to interact with,” advised George Davis of Water Feature Pros. Still, a water feature does not have to be massive in order to have the same wonderful effects. Whether it is a long, meandering stream flowing from a waterfall, or simply a fountain that recirculates water and provides a sense of structure with added visual interest, the sound and movement provided will help set an ideal mood for relaxing or entertaining. Today, advances in design have also made ponds and water features much more manageable from a maintenance standpoint than in decades past. The key here is to develop a working relationship between the various living entities and the water itself.

26

3

4

3 This striking water feature was created by placing multiple Basalt column fountains atop a sub-surface reservoir to create vertical movement and provide both visual and auditory interest. This, along with a nearby pond and a waterfall (not pictured), help to drown out the sounds of nearby traffic and create different focal points throughout the property. Photo courtesy of Aquascape, Inc. 4 As part of a project that was inspired by the concept of a home retreat, this elegant water feature was designed as a focal point that would intertwine with multiple gathering spaces and aide in moving excess water away from the house. Plantings add seasonal color, while softening and separating the hardscapes and tying together the various areas. Photo courtesy of Grant & Power Landscaping.

“Ponds and waterfalls do not have to be extremely high maintenance,” shared Jeff Duggins, owner of H2O Designs. “A proper design fosters a symbiotic relationship between the various elements to create a water feature that is ecologically balanced.”

“Thoughtfulness is key in designing a water feature that incorporates a holistic view of the garden,” shared Dave Miller, owner of Nature’s Expressions. “Consider how it will interact with other elements, such as hardscapes, patios and outdoor living areas.”

As a general rule, if gardening and maintenance sound too much like hard work, it may be a good idea to consider a fountain or pondless water feature instead. Today’s fountains and pondless designs offer a wider range of styles and designs than ever before and can function either as a semi-natural extension of the landscape, or as a more formal structural element.

It’s also important to consider the grade, shape and size of the lot before deciding on a particular type of water feature, because these elements will largely determine what is possible – or not. Keep in mind that incorporating a water feature can also be a great way to beautify a lot that has serious grade changes, providing a delightful way to make use of otherwise troublesome outdoor areas.

By contrast, incorporating a pond can serve as an ideal location for showcasing gorgeous water plants, and for true hobbyists adding Koi or goldfish brings another level of color and movement (along with care and maintenance) into the mix. Before deciding what size and style of water feature to incorporate, however, it is essential to consider all aspects of the home’s existing and newly planned outdoor areas.

“Working with the topography of an outdoor space is a smart way to make positive use of grade changes to incorporate a water feature,” shared Pat Dwyer of Dwyer Designscapes. Today’s water features can help turn any landscape into something special, providing a focal point and attracting wildlife. Just be sure to consider all the options and do a bit of research before diving into creating—or updating—an outdoor oasis.

A Lensman and a Landscape BY MEGHANN HOLMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT CAMPBELL

2

“Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.” Ansel Adams said it first, and Lexington born and bred photographer Scott Campbell concurs whole-heartedly. Not one to wait around long hours for a shot, Campbell prefers to move around with his tripod, testing this angle and that, and often ‘happening upon’ just the right spot. Sometimes a sunset, sometimes a sunrise, or even a fogfilled meadow—Campbell uses his unique understanding of light to transform a photo from snapshot to artwork.

1 Sunrise on Charlotte Harbor in Boca Grande, Campbell’s favorite Florida destination. 2 Campbell and wife Robin. 3 Macy, Campbell’s companion on many of his shoots.

30

3

Most of Campbell’s work focuses on natural landscapes and finding just the right perspective. More than thirtyfive years of work as a landscape designer—Campbell’s full-time occupation—has lent a good deal to his ability to capture the beauty of a natural vista. “Photography really is hand-in-hand with landscape design,” says Campbell about the relationship between his pastime and his profession. “Light, scale, composition, texture—anything you use in landscape design you use with photography.”

Artist 4 “That was an intense night,” Campbell says of his bestselling shot, taken at Somerset’s Lake Cumberland boat dock at sunset. He set up his tripod and readied his camera after a thunderstorm, and just as he thought it wasn’t going to be worth the time, the sunset lit up the sky.

4 Campbell is self-effacing when it comes to his work, preferring to brag on his wife Robin’s artistry (she is a landscape architect and owner of popular Lexington eatery, Cheapside). In Campbell’s opinion, Robin is the true artist in the family, and he asks for her thoughts on all of his work—both photography and landscape design. Campbell has dabbled with photography for years, but in the last 5 to 10 he began to develop “a passion to capture things.” Now, he is always looking for the perfect shot, whether he’s at Jacobson Park in east Lexington or on the sands of Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Campbell find inspiration in these picturesque venues, as well as from other great photographers, and he intends to continue learning the tricks of the trade. “It’s such a developing thing, photography,” he says. “There’s no, ‘I’m finished,’ no, ‘I’ve made it.’”

While Campbell’s work has mostly been sold to friends or acquaintances, he hopes photography will one day be more than a leisurely pursuit. “I’d like to further what I’m doing,” he says. “My wish is that, 20 years from now, this will pay the electric bill.” To see more of Campell’s work go to www.samscottcampbell.wix.com/close-up

5 5 While on vacation at Florida’s Islamorada, Campbell stepped outside his room every morning to try to capture the sunrise lighting this boardwalk. After a few days he finally got his shot. 6 Campbell saw this spot at Gainsway horse farm on Paris Pike on a scouting drive and thought it looked perfect for a sunrise. He got up one morning when the sky seemed clear and drove out to try his luck. “I get a lot of duds when I do that but that happened to be a nice little surprise,” he says of the shot. Campbell used HDR to catch the whole range of light and still see the rock wall clearly.

7 Campbell spends a lot of time at Jacobson’s Park looking for photo ops like this. He and Macy typically arrive before sunrise, and Macy runs a bit while he sets up. “She’s with me most of the time,” Campbell says of his border collie mix. “She doesn’t wander off, so it makes for a much easier outing.”

8

8 This scene on an old horse farm captured Campbell’s imagination several years ago when he was driving by. He secured this peaceful scene during a foggy sunrise in winter. 9 Campbell drove by this scene at Spindletop after a planned shoot nearby and decided to turn around and check it out. “I’m always looking for lines, and that has real good lines that disappear into the horizon,” he says. 10 After parking alongside the road between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC, Campbell and his trusty companion Macy hiked for a long while before finding this picturesque spot.

W 2 Vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams and natural stone around the wood-burning fireplace lend a cozy feel to this posh space, which includes a formal living room and elegant home office (not pictured). A baby grand piano, custom gold-hued window treatments and beautifully refurbished antique furniture complete the look.

hen homeowners Jan and Kelly Barrett decided to build on this gorgeous piece of property in the late 1990s, they had no way of knowing the journey that lay in store. Situated in the rolling hills of the Kentucky bluegrass just outside of Richmond, the two bedroom, two-bath residence features an open floor plan that lends a spacious feel to the 2,200-square-foot home. “It’s the perfect size for us,” shared Jan. “We don’t have children, but when family comes to visit we have plenty of room for guests.” Originally, the home was about half the size it is now, but around ten years ago Jan and Kelly decided to expand. They needed a home office to accommodate Jan’s growing sales and marketing business and also decided to add a new dining and family room area, as well as a master suite with an extra large walk-in closet and adjacent sitting room. The expansion marked the beginning of the couple’s professional relationship with designer Sherry Feeney of Forecast Interiors, who helped craft a traditional look for the home, which at the time incorporated rich jewel tones and a classic, old-world feel. Then, five years ago the unthinkable happened when a broken pipe in the upstairs master bath ruined most of the home’s interior finishes. Although it was devastating at the time and forced the couple to uproot their lives and live in a cramped cottage for more than a year, the mishap also provided to be an extraordinary opportunity to start over again with a blank slate.

36

3 “The goal was to incorporate touches of European style with a lighter, softer look the second time around,” Feeney revealed. “We searched for the right antique pieces online and in dozens of antique stores, and almost every surface has been hand-finished by artisans, creating an amazing level of customization throughout the home’s interior.” Upon completion, the latest round of remodeling and upgrades included an intoxicating mix of faux finishes, blended with beautifully refurbished antiques and customized touches, until virtually every inch of the home was transformed into the immaculate interior spaces seen today. Favorite areas include the expansive back porch, which was transformed into a chic outdoor living space complete with dining and living room areas, as well as the formal living room and office, which provides an ideal place to work from home, or to curl up by the wood burning stone fireplace and enjoy a good book.

3 Warm tones lend an intimate feel to the kitchen, which features a custom-crafted decorative tin ceiling installed by the homeowners, skylights painted with delicate scrollwork and fauxfinished cabinetry. Sleek blackgranite countertops and a travertine tile backsplash in neutral tones with black accents lend a classic touch, while a repurposed butcher block serves as an eye-catching and functional center island.

“We use every bit of space in our home,” Jan shared. “The open plan on the first floor is ideal for entertaining and we love to build a fire on the porch during the spring and fall.” Proving that even a near-disaster can be turned into something beautiful, the Barrett home stands as a testimony to thoughtful craftsmanship and custom design, offering up countless opportunities for expression of color, texture and timeless style.

4 The formal dining room blends ornate custom-designed molding, a natural cowhide rug and a playful zebra pattern on the refurbished antique chairs, which also boast a rich gold-leaf finish. The sheer linen draperies are topped by a stunning pair of antique cornices, while the topiaries accentuate the room’s European feel.

5 5 A soothing palette of rich cream tones blend with shades of tan, linen and black velvet to provide a baseline for the easy-flowing design in this spacious family room, which is open to the formal dining area and features a stately wall of functional built-ins surrounding the gas fireplace. French doors and a wall of windows overlook a spacious outdoor living and dining area to the bucolic views beyond.

6 Soft buttery hues give the firstfloor guest room an alluring and highly luxurious feel, while the antique cornice above the bed and plush sheepskin rug work to up the opulence. The oversized chair was cleverly recovered in a charming tapestry found in a local antique store, while the flawless antique nightstands, ornate molding and gracefully draping light fixture add to the feeling of grandeur.

7 7 An incredible view of rural Kentucky takes center stage in this lovely outdoor dining space and separate sitting room with a stone fireplace (not pictured). The dining area features a luxurious outdoor rug and fabrics, with a special “B monogrammed into the end chairs, as well as a chandelier to provide adequate lighting for evening dinner parties. Beautiful stained-glass frames made by the homeowner’s longtime friend and hairdresser Keith Tuggle form a half wall and lend added definition to the space.

Special touches include an oversized walk-in closet (not pictured), spacious sitting area and trey ceiling with recessed lighting. 9 This inviting sitting area is tucked into the master suite and boasts a beautifully reupholstered leopard-patterned chair, exquisite antique hanging lamp, a soft dark-chocolate sofa with plush cushioned ottoman and oversized bronze mirror leaning against the interior wall that was carefully positioned to reflect the gorgeous view. 10 With plenty of natural light and soft, neutral-hued ceramic tile work featuring a custom border, marble tub deck and inlaid details surrounding the garden tub and open walk-in shower, the master bath makes the most of the available space, which also features a dedicated vanity area and plenty of storage.

TWIN FIRES

Dating back to the 19th century, Mike and Tammie Simpson’s home retains all the charm and history of the original farmhouse but features renovations that will make it comfortable for a lifetime. BY CHRISTINA NOLL PHOTOGRAPHY BY WALT ROYCRAFT

1the Although it has since been rebuilt and renovated, house has a lot of history because it goes back to Stephen Smith’s land grant. It contains elements of the original log cabin, as well as the twin fireplaces on each end of the living room. Located about five minutes outside of Somerset, the house now sits on five of the original 100 acres, and still features a picturesque rural setting.

2

G

2 One side of the 30-foot living room is home to one half of the twin fireplaces that give the home its name, “Twin Fires.” The beams in this room are from the original log cabin and date back to 1836. The ornate cupboard in the background is French and from the late 1800s. The painting to the right is a 17th century Flemish and the oldest painting in the Simpson home.

rowing up in Somerset, Mike Simpson always admired the old house on Monticello Road called Twin Fires. Today, he and his wife, Tammie, have been calling the historic property home for over 32 years. Called “Twin Fires” because of the two twin fireplaces at either end of the main living room, the home is a Pulaski County landmark. The Simpsons purchased the home in 1984 when it came up for auction. Originally it was the farmhouse of Stephen Smith, a Revolutionary War veteran who received the property as a 100-acre land grant from the state of Virginia as a reward for his military service. Smith and his wife built a two-story double log house on the property, complete with a large fireplace in each room, one on the northeast and the other on the southwest end. In articles that detail the time that Stephen Smith and his family lived in the house, descriptions of the property include another building that was used as a slave quarters in the back of the house, a deep well, a smoke house and a large orchard.

44

By the 1930s, the original log cabin was in disrepair and no longer structurally sound. The owners at that time, Dr. and Mrs. A.B. Waddle, had the structure rebuilt to include two bedrooms in the main section as well as a bedroom and bath above the garage for their gardener. The design of this new home was done by Stratton Hammon, a well-known architect from Louisville, Kentucky. When the Waddles had the original log cabin taken apart to be reconstructed, they managed to salvage beams and other architectural details to be used in the new construction. Unfortunately the Waddles were never able to enjoy the new home; Mrs. Waddle’s aging father did not want to leave his own home and the couple sold the Smith property to another family. “Blanche Waddle always referred to the property as ‘Money sunk’ the rest of her life,” writes Simpson in a summary of his current home. “Blanche stayed in her family home place on Griffin Avenue in Somerset until her death many years later.”

3 3 The opposite view of the Twin Fires living room holds a piano, which Tammie Simpson plays. There is also a painting by Boston painter Henry Rice from around 1880 and a game table (on the right) that is a family piece. The coffee table is actually a contemporary piece made of oversized leather books stacked together.

In 1941 Anna Belle Ward Olson purchased the historical property. “She was a movie producer in Hollywood producing what were called B Westerns, which were shown in Saturday afternoon matinee’s across the nation,” says Simpson. “She also wrote several books. Her connections in Hollywood made the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to be very well known.” She and her husband, along with her two sisters Adeline and Fern, lived in the home for forty-three years. “They were known for their lavish parties and entertained guests from Hollywood frequently as well as many political dignitaries during the forties and fifties,” Simpson writes in his summary. In 1984, Fern Alley, one of Anna Belle Ward Olsen’s sisters, auctioned the home along with antiques and artifacts, and the remaining fifteen acres of Stephen Smith’s one hundred acre land grant. Although the home passed out of the family, it is still called Twin Fires. “For years we only got our mail at ‘Twin Fires, Somerset, Kentucky,’ and everyone knew where that was,” says Simpson, explaining that there was no need for an official address.

The Simpson’s completely renovated the house and put on a major addition, which included the kitchen, breakfast room and sunroom in 2002. They have decorated Twin Fires in their own special blend of traditional with a touch of eclectic style. “We like a mix of antiques and period reproductions,” says Simpson about their choice in furniture. “We also have paintings we’ve collected over the years that are a mixture of antique paintings, more contemporary artists and local artists. We like to buy local art when we can.” Various oriental area rugs throughout the house have been purchased in the Southeast states over the years. The overall effect of the home is both rich and inviting. In fact, despite the historical background and beautiful interior design, the Simpsons do not treat their home as it were a museum. “We live in our house and we enjoy it,” says Simpson. “This was a house that I had always wanted to buy, even when I was young. I can never imagine living anywhere else.”

www.kentuckyhomesandgardens.com

45

4 4 The two-story addition by the Simpsons in 2002 included a new kitchen and breakfast room. The large fireplace was completed by local stonemason Steve Price and faces 20-foot high glass windows and doors that lead out to the property. Not seen in this photo is even more cabinetry in the kitchen, all mahogany with maple accents, built by Hahn Wood Products in Somerset. 5 The Simpsons family room features original pine wood ceilings. “Originally the walls and everything were pine, but we dry walled the rest of the room and left the pine on the ceiling, explains Simpson. The table in this room is used mainly as a game table, but can also serve as a secondary table if they are hosting a large crowd for dinner. 6 In the dining room the table and chairs are by Hickory Chair. Just above the English sideboard hangs a nineteenth century painting of a Western mountain scene. Throughout the original part of the home, the floors are likely chestnut, which is no longer available in the U.S.

7 A mural depicting tranquil, pastoral scenes was hand painted by Kentucky artist Danny Dutton. The original artwork transforms the foyer and walls space leading up the staircase. 8 Located on the second floor, this guest bedroom has an ensuite bathroom. Located at the end of the bed is an antique gate legged table. The painting on the left side is Tammie’s grandmother and her brother. The rug, from Charleston, South Carolina, is one of many throughout the house that the Simpsons purchased in the Southeast. 9 In the master bedroom, embroidered fabric—called Crewel—makes up the curtains and pillow covers, coordinating with the oriental carpet. The paintings over the bed belonged to the owner’s mother and were painted around 1970. “They are two of my favorite paintings,” Simpson says.

7

10 A master bathroom was part of the addition the Simpsons made to the home in 2002. A large skylight adds brightness to the space, which is decorated with a nautical theme. “I love sailing and used to sail a lot in Charleston,” explains Simpson.

WELCOME HOME BY MEGHANN HOLMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF WALKER

f you’ve been searching for a home whose builder thought of everything, 2347 Walnut Grove Lane is the home for you. The real estate listing for this beautiful east Lexington home gives a detailed list of features that would check off most—quite possibly all—of the boxes on a home searcher’s list, but the long list cannot begin to describe the home’s warmth, enchantment and singularity. The current homeowners had originally planned to purchase land and build, but after seeing this home, they fell in love. “None of the land we saw had the character or view that we wanted,” says the homeowner. “This was the only house that was gated but actually had this view.” The view is the first thing one notices when entering the home’s living room. Beyond a wall of French doors lies the beautifully sculpted landscape of the Greenbrier Golf & Country Club’s golf course. The home, situated on the 5th hole, has a perfect view of the club’s 19-acre lake.

52

3 2 The living room is the most stunning room in the house, with black and ivory tray ceilings and three sets of French doors that highlight the incredible lake view beyond them. When hosting parties the family often opens up the doors and lets the party flow onto the patio and backyard. 3 Black, ivory and deep red foliage adorn the walls of the guest powder room, while a black marble statue stands sentry over the faucet. Black tile and a painted black ceiling add a dramatic ambiance to the room.

The view makes the immaculate backyard the perfect place to spend warm days playing and relaxing. The living room opens onto an enclosed veranda perfect for entertaining. From there residents have a perfect view of the elevated in-ground pool, basketball court and tree house. Inside the home is as impressive as the outside. Each of the five bedrooms is like a suite, complete with a sitting area, and either its own bathroom or a shared bathroom between them. The master suite is the most impressive, with an entire wall of windows looking out onto a spectacular view of the lake.

The 6,785 square foot home really is a must-see. The home’s amenities—home theater with platform seating, wet bar, endless storage and so much more—cannot be described adequately in words. The dwelling is not just a showcase of beauty and uniqueness; each room is warm and inviting, just as a home should be. The home has been a place of peace and celebration for the family. Three daughters were married in the home, and a niece was married in the scenic back yard. Now that the children are grown and gone, the home needs a family with children, says the homeowner. “It’s really meant to raise a family.” www.kentuckyhomesandgardens.com

4 Vivid red walls perfectly complement the homeowner’s Asian decor in the formal dining room. The luxurious feel is enhanced by a wall-length recessed shelf with recessed lighting, and a glass block wall offers some separation between the living and dining areas. 5 A clean, sleek look in the much-used kitchen was only enhanced with the stainless steel appliances the homeowners recently installed. The kitchen not only looks good: it’s the most functional and highly trafficked room in the home. The family enjoys meals at the breakfast nook where they can take in the singular lake view outside.

7

6 Plantation shutters frame large single pane windows that offer occupants of the master bedroom an unparalleled view of the lake. The room is equipped with a surround sound system that extends throughout the home. To the right of the master is a comfortable sitting room that opens up onto the home’s enclosed patio. 7 The master bath is arguably the most luxurious room in the home, offering two extensive walk-in closets, a water closet, large jacuzzi tub, double sink, sitting and vanity area, endless storage and even a refrigerator. The state-of-the-art room is enhanced by the floating crown molding that graces the entirety of the ceiling.

8 Each bedroom is distinctive, with a sitting room, bathroom and walk-in closet. The upstairs bedrooms have two charming doors that open to the attic and endless storage space. Each bedroom also offers privacy: “No matter which room you go into, once you shut the door it’s very quite and peaceful... you don’t hear what’s going on in rest of house,” says the homeowner, an attribute that he says is especially nice during parties.

9

9 The uniquely printed sink and toilet were already part of the home when the current homeowners moved in. They made it their own with splashes of red throughout. Located just off of the family’s fitness room, it features a steam shower (not shown) opposite the sink. 10 The lower level of the home houses many rooms for recreation, including a home theater, fitness room and this large family room with bar. “Every bridal shower, every birthday, Christmas... everything happens down in that room,” the homeowner says. 11 The modern wet bar, with its ice machine, cooler and loads of character, makes the family room the perfect place to hang out. Cold nights are made cozier with the room’s working gas fireplace.

WARD HALL

Step Back into Central Kentucky’s History and One of Our Nation’s Finest Homes BY CHRISTINA NOLL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WARD HALL

On a dark, December night, my boots crunched along the snowy path leading to the front entrance of Ward Hall, a Greek revival antebellum mansion located in Georgetown. Moving past the 27 foot-high Corinthian columns on the stately front porch and into the foyer, I was immediately transported back to a Kentucky night of a different era. The effect was truly magnificent. Built in 1857, Ward Hall is indeed a mansion at over 12,000 square feet spread among four floors. Each floor holds five large rooms and two floors feature 65-foot long halls. Junius Ward and his wife Matilda had the home built for $50,000 in gold at the time. Today it remains one of the most intact historical estates in the country and is open in its entirety—from the attic to the basement—to the public. “I think the overall presence of the house—its scale, attention to detail, and fineness of finish—is overwhelming,” says David Stuart, Chairman of the Ward Hall Preservation Foundation. The house altogether offers approximately 25 spaces to view, including 12 fireplaces, a cook stove outlet and a cast iron stove outlet in the basement. “Ward Hall serves as the stage for the telling of the story of the history of Kentucky before its settlement, during the settlement period, antebellum period, civil war, post-bellum period as well as the Black American experience during all of those periods,” says Stuart.

The home sees several thousand visitors each year, including during the Christmas candlelight tours, and during the summer when vintage baseball is played on the grounds. “Currently we are working on a Civil War weekend with outside exhibits and re-enactors camping on the grounds,” says Stuart. They are also in the planning stage of reviving the Halloween tours. “This June we are celebrating Anton Chekhov’s classic drama, The Cherry Orchard, at Ward Hall,” says Stuart. During this On The Verge site-specific adaptation of Chekhov’s masterwork, small audiences will follow the action as it weaves its way through the house, inside and out, upstairs and down. “It will bring a different perspective to the mansion, and attract an entirely different demographic to our experience,” says Stuart. During its prime, Ward Hall was not only one of the finest homes in the country, but also held a strong association with Kentucky’s Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing history. In fact, Julius Ward’s obituary in 1883 said he raced not for money, but from a love of turf sports. In a nod to that history, Stuart says, “We want to bring retired race horses to celebrate Ward Hall’s incomparable association with the early thoroughbred industry.” “We want to see the entire Ward Hall plantation rebuilt and restored so visitors can see and learn about the

Part of that culture includes the foundation’s recent acquisition of the coin silver goblets, flatware, the French dessert plates and other pieces which were all purchased at Tiffany and Company before the civil war and actually used at Ward Hall. “These pieces give you insight into the grand quality of living, the Wards achieved at Ward Hall,” says Stuart. In addition to its grandeur inside, Ward Hall was always known for its fabulous gardens, as well as the greenhouses adjacent to the house. Restored, these areas would now make beautiful settings for tented events. “It will take lots of money and manpower to restore them,” says Stuart. “Presently we are working to improve the rear garden area to make it available for weddings and other outside activities.” In the future, through further renovation and with the help of the Foundation, Ward Hall may be returned to a reflection of its former splendor. Doing so is explicitly part of the Foundation’s mission, “to preserve, interpret and develop its historical, architectural and social heritage.”
