criminal justice system. This program, initiated in October 2021, serves as a lifeline for developmentally disabled individuals who have encountered the complexities of the criminal justice system. Connect was born from Judge Cable’s firm belief that every individual, regardless of their challenges, deserves a chance at redemption, growth, and a brighter future. This remarkable initiative targets individuals adjudicated in the Akron Municipal Court who are primarily diagnosed with developmental disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome, communication disorders, and other developmental challenges. Many of these individuals also grapple
with accompanying mental health diagnoses. The essence of Connect lies in its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for these individuals. Judge Cable recognized that these individuals needed tailored services and resources to overcome the hurdles they faced, not just punitive measures. Thus, Connect is a beacon of hope for those who have often felt marginalized or misunderstood within the criminal justice system. A Heartwarming Inspiration: Ronnie Cable
Behind the creation of Connect lies a deeply personal and profoundly touching story—a story of love, resilience, and boundless hope. At the heart of Judge Ron Cable’s dedication to helping developmentally disabled individuals stands his own special needs son, Ronnie Cable. Ronnie, at 26 years old, is a remarkable young man who lives with his family in West Akron. He shares his life with his loving mother, his younger brother, and his devoted father, Judge Ron Cable. The challenges Ronnie faced began at a tender age, as he grappled with difficulties in coping with everyday activities. The journey has been arduous, but it has been marked
by remarkable progress and unwavering support. The Cleveland Clinic Lerner School played a pivotal role in Ronnie’s education and behavior therapy. Over the years, Ronnie has made remarkable strides in his development, a testament to his indomitable spirit and the unwavering support of his family and community. In Summit County, the Cable family is fortunate to have a robust Developmental Disabilities Board and abundant resources that have allowed Ronnie and others with disabilities to lead meaningful lives.
