REBECCA MCCLARY Parent Mentor Solutions As a special needs mom, Rebecca seeks opportunities to connect with other parents on similar journeys. Her journey started nine years ago, when her daughter was born prematurely. She is a parent advocate, specializing in guiding parents through the challenges of IEPs, 504s, and school accommodations for children with disabilities. Rebecca jokes that she uses her Communication Degree, from Kent State University, as a navigation tool through thousands of medical appointments, therapies, and school meetings. She resides in Stark County, Ohio with her husband, two children, and three dogs. She loves Jesus, reading, boating, and spending time with family and friends. Also notable, she hates winter.

Today, Gary calls the Meyers Lake Area home, a place where his warmth and exuberance shine through every day. What sets Gary apart is his boundless love for life and the people in it. YEAR-ROUND CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
One of Gary’s true passions is the magic of the silver screen. He adores movies, but his love for Christmas takes the cake. Born on Christmas day, Gary’s world revolves around the holiday, and it’s not uncommon to find him watching Christmas movies in the middle of summer. His family shares in his festive spirit, and together, they make every day a little more like Christmas, filling their hearts with warmth and joy. “He was born on Christmas, so his entire world revolves around Christmas,” says mom, Sharon Joseph. “It could be in the middle of summer and Gary will want to have Christmas movies playing. Luckily, the family shares in his love for Christmas, so we make it work!”
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AND STARK DD PROVIDE A PILLAR OF SUPPORT
Life hasn’t always been easy for Gary. In his early years, he faced numerous surgeries, a challenging period that brought his family closer to the Ronald McDonald House. The support provided by the Ronald McDonald House offered them a comforting place to stay during those difficult

ABOUT THIS PHOTOSHOOT! We would like to give a special thank you to Moore’s Tree Farm for letting us use their location for this month’s cover shoot! Moore’s Tree Farm is a family owned, 100 acre farm that specializes in growing Christmas trees, daylilies, and hostas. Each year about 2000 evergreen seedlings are planted. After 7 to 10 years of growing, mowing, fertilizing, and trimming, families walk the trees with a tree sled and saw to find that “perfect” tree for their home. Fresh evergreen wreaths, swags, centerpieces, and roping are also available during the Christmas season

THE HUMMINGBIRD WHO SOARS BEYOND EXPECTATIONS
Introducing You
To Waleili Gregory BY MELISSA KLATT PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET
I
n the quiet town of Navarre, nestled in Stark County, Ohio, there is a remarkable young woman who has overcome incredible odds, defied expectations, and now inspires everyone she meets. Meet Waleili Gregory, a 17-year-old Navarre native who personifies strength, resilience, and the power of unconditional love.
Baby Jane Doe is Born Defying Challenges
Waleili, affectionately known as “Baby Jane Doe” when she was born in 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Canton, arrived in this world 3 1/2 months prematurely, weighing a mere 1.5 pounds. Twice, she needed to be resuscitated. Her incredible journey began as her parents, Lisa and Denny Gregory, volunteered to be her caregivers, offering her comfort and care, knowing the odds were stacked against her. This decision marked the start of their extraordinary journey. Waleili’s health gradually improved, leading to the Gregorys becoming her foster care providers.
38
December 2023
Eventually, adoption was on the horizon, and they eagerly embraced the opportunity to make her a permanent part of their family. In a process filled with challenges, 16 months later, Waleili officially became their daughter. They chose the name “Waleili,” which means “hummingbird” in Cherokee, a fitting name for a small yet determined young lady. The Power of Love and Resilience in This Hummingbird’s Development
Waleili’s life has been a testament to the power of love and resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges
and diagnoses, her development has been nothing short of amazing. She’s a 12th-grade student at Fairless High School, excelling academically and earning a spot on the Honor Roll every semester. Waleili has also ventured into part-time employment, receiving high praise
from her employers. Her journey is a reminder that challenges can be conquered with determination and unwavering support. The Gregorys have been fortunate to access resources like Help Me Grow, Stark DD, SCDJFS, The Arc of Ohio, Sharing Solutions, Spectrum Education Center at Mt. Union, ASPIES, and more, which have played a vital role in Waleili’s growth. Her inspiring journey resonates with a poem titled “Welcome to Holland” by Emily Perl Kingsley, a source of inspiration for her parents. Waleili’s extracurricular activities help continue her growth, including her involvement in student council, yearbook, and Tae Kwon Do, further enriching her life. The story of her deep connection with squirrels, nurturing relationships with nearly 50 of them during the COVID pandemic, is a testament to her unique and caring spirit. But Waleili’s story isn’t just about overcoming adversity; it’s about giving back. Despite her history of traumatic medical experiences, she decided to become a blood donor, conquering her
fears and donating blood to save lives. Her courage is an inspiration to us all. Waleili’s pursuit of independence is another remarkable chapter in her life. At the age of 17, she embarked on a journey to obtain her temporary driver’s license. With dedication and hard work, she passed her temps test with flying colors, proving that determination knows no bounds. Taekwondo Became the Push This Hummingbird Needed
Waleili’s story is also a testament to the power of community and the impact of the people who believe in her. A special mention goes to Grand Master Jong Woon Kim, who welcomed Waleili into his Taekwondo academy, pushing her limits physically and mentally, ultimately helping her
earn her 3rd Dan Black Belt. Mom, Lisa Gregory, reflects on the impact Taekwondo has had on Waleili’s life: We have always wanted Waleili to have an active social life. But, as a child, Waleili has never been interested in the traditional sports, youth groups, and social clubs in which “typical” kids tend to participate. In early 2015, a dear friend named Nick Sopher recommended a martial arts studio that his son Matt was involved with. Matt (also diagnosed with Autism) was featured in the June edition of Special Needs Living. Nick thought that Waleili might benefit from this activity in the same way that Matt had been benefitting. The following day, we scheduled an appointment at the World

Championship Taekwondo Academy in North Canton, led by World Champion, Grand Master Jong Woon Kim. At our initial meeting, Grand Master Kim patiently listened as we ran down our list of Waleili’s numerous diagnoses, medical conditions, disabilities, and other special needs. Once we finished, he smiled and said, “Bring her to me— I will teach her.” So, for the next 2 1/2 years, we brought Waleili to Grand Master Kim’s TKD studio every Friday evening for a one-hour private lesson. He was very firm with her—and pushed her to her limits, both physically and mentally. But, he was also very compassionate and fun-loving with her. Every session ended with a hug and a word of encouragement. Waleili continued to work hard as she transitioned from private lessons to group classes with (mostly) “typical” students of various ages. In November 2017, Waleili earned her 1st Dan (Degree) Black Belt. In November 2019, she earned her 2nd Dan Black Belt; And, in November 2021, she earned her 3rd Dan Black Belt— an achievement attained by less than 1% of all those who begin TKD classes. The Babysitter and Hummingbird Unite!
In this journey of resilience and growth, one person has played an especially significant role. Chelsea Lanier-Ball, who initially babysat 40
December 2023
Waleili, continued to inspire her long after they parted ways. “When Waleili was about four years old, we started looking for a little help with childcare—i.e. a babysitter,” says Lisa. “But, with our daughter’s special needs, we were hesitant to leave her with “just anyone.” A family member recommended a 16-year-old local girl whom we were familiar with named Chelsea. Chelsea had a good reputation in our community, and was an excellent student.” Chelsea and Waleili instantly hit it off! Their bond only seemed to get stronger as life continued to bring them closer together–even when Chelsea went away to college at the University of Akron. They continued to see each other and chat, even while apart. However, she always carried Waleili in her heart, following the journey from a babysitter to an award-winning Intervention Specialist in Special Education, and winning the 2022 National Amazing Teacher Award. Waleili even earned the title “Bridesmaid” at Chelsea’s wedding! This Hummingbird’s Dreams Continue to Inspire Us All
As we celebrate Waleili’s incredible journey, it’s essential to remember her dreams. She aspires to have a job, earn money, buy a car, and even travel to Europe! These dreams are not just individual
aspirations; they are testaments to the boundless potential within us all. Waleili Gregory’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, the power of love, and the unwavering support of her family and community. She has proven that with determination, resilience, and the right support system, one can achieve remarkable heights. Waleili is truly a hummingbird who soars beyond expectations, inspiring us all to embrace life’s challenges and turn them into opportunities for growth and transformation.

THE ABC’S OF IEP S > REBECCA MCCL ARY
Let’s Talk About ESY Services. BY REBECCA MCCLARY
It’s that time of year again… for parties, holiday cards, gift giving, traveling, and celebrating annual traditions. So, why would I bring up Extended School Year services (ESY)? I promise I haven’t gone crazy (well, as long as you don’t ask my husband). Let’s talk about ESY and how it relates to the upcoming winter breaks. There are several different beliefs about who is eligible for ESY services. For the purpose of this article, we are going to reference the definition given by Disability Rights Ohio. There is no single criterion for deciding eligibility for ESY. One factor is the regression/recoupment standard. The ODE rules require schools to consider regression and recoupment when deciding whether a child is eligible for ESY. Regression/ 44
December 2023
recoupment looks at whether your child will lose skills due to a break in school (e.g., summer and spring break), and how long it takes for your child to regain the skills when school starts again. If your child loses skills during breaks, and does not regain those skills in a reasonable time, your child may be eligible for ESY. 1 One of the main purposes of ESY services is to decrease a student’s regression after a break in typical educational routines. Some of our kiddos with special needs have a challenging time when routines change or pause for a long period of time. These challenges have the ability to cause regression of learned skills or behaviors. If you have read my previous contributions, a common theme I talk about is DATA, DATA, DATA. I can not stress it enough, document data to prove the need for services you are requesting for your child’s IEP. For ESY services, it is no different. Take some time to jot down any regression you notice after your child
goes back to school. This could look like having to relearn skills he/she had mastered before break. You may also notice behavioral regression after long periods of routine change. I suggest tracking and documenting anything you notice for 2-3 weeks after your child returns to school from winter break. Repeat this same documentation of data after spring break too. You can then compare your notes and see if you notice any patterns. If regression of skills/goals is a common theme, you may want to consider reaching out to your IEP team and requesting a meeting. Most schools hold IEP meetings, to determine ESY eligibility, in April or May. And as always, remember YOU are a member of the IEP team! If you want to dig further into ESY services, check out Disability Rights Ohio, Ohio Department of Education, or the Ohio Coalition. 1 - https/www.disabilityrightsohio.org/faq-specialeducation-esy-services

When the Joy A Child Brings Always Outweighs The Struggles Introducing You To Ava West-Mullen BY ANDREA HURR • PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET
K
eeping God at the center of their lives, Lisa West is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to her special needs daughter Ava West-Mullen. While pregnant with Ava and her identical twin sister Abigail, Lisa and her husband Jon felt pressured to do a selective reduction with doctors suggesting that they should focus on “the healthy twin” as Ava appeared not compatible with life. They obviously did not choose to go that route and Lisa says that they “have always been adamant that though the doctors may have one plan for Ava’s life, we know that the plan God has for her life has been so much greater from the very moment He placed her and her twin sister in the womb!!!” “Keeping God at the center of our lives and continuing to remind ourselves that he is the author of Ava’s story has been the best way to keep the faith and stay positive throughout all of Ava’s struggles.” And struggles they have had. Born at 34 weeks, due to full placenta abruption, with profound microcephaly with a simplified gyral

pattern (her head and brain are extremely small and her brain does not have the wrinkles in it like a typical brain) and optic nerve hypoplasia (extremely small optic nerves in her eyes) they discovered years later through genetic testing that Ava has an extremely rare disorder of the MCPH1 gene which is the root cause of her medical complexities. On top of all that, shortly after birth, she was diagnosed with a heart condition called
VSD which has thankfully completely resolved itself and then at age 2, she was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. Her SDCP affects her gait, motor planning skills, and physical stamina. Ava and Abigail are now 7, in first grade, and thriving in their own ways. The twins have 5 more siblings and a niece and nephew. Lisa says to watch Ava interact with her 6 siblings and nephew and niece “is truly to witness magic in the making. The amount of growth, patience, and love that our older children have gained since Ava’s birth has been incredible to see. They truly all are “their sister’s keeper”.” Ava also has an incredible bond with her twin which Lisa describes as “supernatural” and “unexplainably special”. The girls are inseparable and best friends. “What one lacks, the other one doesn’t miss a beat in picking up on,” says Lisa.
The West-Mullen family has been a part of a local support group in Plain Township which now keeps in touch through social media since Covid. Lisa stresses that having other parents who understand the hard moments and are there to celebrate the good ones has been a “defining factor in the success of parenting a medically complex child.” Lisa also keeps a Facebook page called Micro Miracle Ava where she posts updates on Ava, shares her thoughts, and struggles, and keeps information handy on microcephaly. Ava receives therapies through Wings of Change Therapy, Inc. in Cuyahoga Falls where she works with a speech pathologist and occupational and
physical therapists. Daisy and Waffles, the therapy dogs there offer a lot of motivation to Ava and Lisa says her skills have grown by leaps and bounds since starting there! They credit her school, OHDELA, which is an online school for a lot of her success too. Even though it is online
schooling, her services and accommodations have been “top-notch” and she receives part of her education with typical peers and the other part of her day is in small groups and one-on-one live class sessions with her intervention specialist. Lisa can’t praise OHDELA enough saying that it has been an amazing blessing for their family and everyone there goes above and beyond for Ava. In fact, Ava’s intervention specialists Amy Hostetler & Kersti Carmichael are two very important people in Ava’s life that Lisa admires and appreciates so much as they have worked patiently with Ava since kindergarten
and have never once got discouraged or frustrated with her daughter. She goes on to say that Amy and Kristi are Ava’s biggest cheerleaders and number one fans who often go the extra mile by providing materials for them at
not a bad thing to do things differently, and doing those things differently does not make your child “less than”. Allow yourself to grieve the life that you thought your child would have and then pick yourself back up and enjoy the life that you have been blessed with!!! She also says “Ava has brought me to my knees in prayer and brought me to my feet in celebration more times than I can count. The joy that Ava brings to our lives outweighs the struggles 100 times over.”
home to use so Ava can reach her full potential. When asked what is something you would like parents and families in the local special needs community to know, Lisa says; “For families of newly diagnosed babies/ children, celebrate everything! Do not focus on milestones or typical development with your medically complex child. Celebrate “inch stones” and realize that every second your child is with you is a gift from God! Do not be afraid when the doctors put limitations on your child’s life and tell you what they may not be able to do! Your child will continue to surprise you as they grow. It’s

COMMUNITY EVENT RECAP > PUTTS & PINTS FOR A PURP OSE
Putts & Pints For A Purpose Hitting the links for Gigi’s Playhouse Canton BY MIKE STURDIVANT WITH PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET
O
n September 23rd the heart of Downtown Canton came alive with laughter and cheers during the Gigi’s Playhouse Canton event, “Putts & Pints for a Purpose.” This one-of-a-kind fundraiser transformed Canton Centennial Plaza into a 9-hole mini golf course, all for the cause of supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Gigi’s Playhouse Canton, a nonprofit organization, hosted this extraordinary event, leaving a lasting impression on the community and doubling their support compared to the inaugural year. The 2nd Annual Putts & Pints for a Purpose was nothing short of spectacular. It was a celebration of inclusivity, resilience, and unwavering support for individuals with Down syndrome. The event brought together people from all walks of life, promoting a sense of unity and camaraderie.

December 2023
The main attraction, of course, was the mini golf course that took over Canton Centennial Plaza. Families, friends, and even strangers came together to test their putting skills and enjoy a fun day of friendly competition. The mini golf course featured unique and challenging holes, offering excitement for mini golf enthusiasts and beginners alike. Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of the event was the knowledge that every swing of the putter contributed to Gigi’s Playhouse Canton’s mission. The funds raised during Putts & Pints for a Purpose provide critical support for the organization’s therapeutic and educational programs, all offered at no cost to individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

It offers a wide range of programs, from educational, to therapeutic services and social programs. These services not only empower individuals with Down syndrome but also serve as a pillar of support for their families. The success of this year’s event is a testament to the dedication of Gigi’s Playhouse Canton’s team, volunteers, sponsors, and the entire community. The support shown for this organization showcases that when a community comes together, it can achieve great things.

A little bit of mystery surrounded by a lot of love!
THE STORY OF LANDON FRANCIS BY ANDREA HURR PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET
W
hat do you do when your child is considered a “mystery boy”? When doctors believe there is something more going on, but they have been unable to figure out what exactly it is? For Ashlee and Jared Francis, this is their reality. Their 3-year-old son Landon is this “mystery boy”. They will not stop trying to figure out his full diagnosis or what is going on with him, nor will they ever stop loving him and being his advocate. A little backstory… At around 6 months old Landon was not meeting all of his milestones. After many referrals to doctors of various specialties, he was diagnosed with severe hypotonia (weak muscle tone), global developmental delay, level 3 autism (level 3 requires substantial support and is characterized by severe challenges in social communication as well as extremely inflexible behavior), obstructive sleep apnea, issues with chromosome 16 (many genetic conditions are related to problems with the genes on chromosome 16), and most recently epilepsy.

December 2023
While this list of diagnoses for their 3-year-old seems overwhelming, the most frustrating thing is that Landon’s doctors believe that there is something else going on, but no one can seem to figure it out. The Francis family has even driven all the way to Missouri Children’s Hospital and spent a week undergoing tests and visits with the doctors there, but still have no answers. Landon is in an Undiagnosed Disease Network. Adding to all the question marks surrounding Landon, he is nonverbal and cannot crawl or walk. He is unable to effectively communicate to his parents how he is feeling or what he needs. Despite all of these obstacles, Ashlee says that “he is a happy little guy, and nothing will stop him”. Landon has two sisters, Chloe (7) and Isabella (10). They are a huge part of his life and Landon absolutely adores them. As a family they are doing their best to address his needs with speech, occupational, and physical therapies as well as tackle each diagnosis as best they can while remaining positive. “It ain’t easy, but my motto is: If your kid is smiling,
you heavily doubt yourself, especially in moments of being out in public”. She offers up some advice and says, if you have a friend or family member with a child who has special needs, remind them that they are a good parent or that they are doing great. “We need to hear that just as much if not more than most parents… I’ve been blessed to have many people encourage me in moments when I truly need it most. Honestly, it helped shut out those demons in my mind that told me I was not doing enough. So, tell the parents they’re doing great, you might give them what they need to make it another day”. Here’s to hoping that Landon’s doctors can identify what else is going on with him and he can lose the title “mystery boy”. Ashlee and Jared Francis are wonderful parents doing a great job!
then you should be too,” says Ashlee. She suggests trying not to compare your journey with others and to be grateful in each moment, even when you feel 100% alone. Ashlee says, “When you have a special needs child, there are labels, titles, and scary words that become your reality. Get comfortable with them, but don’t let them dim your light.” Ashlee and Jared try their best to remain hopeful even while waiting to find out the unknown. They are in
a special needs group on Facebook called Ohio Special Needs Families and Ashlee reads a lot of books about other children and families in the special needs community for comfort and clarity. Ashlee says that there is nothing more devastating than watching your child suffer or struggle. “If I could give him my legs, I would,” she says. Ashlee goes on to say, “We (special needs parents) are trying our very best for our children but there are times when

Taking A Tour Of The Sunflower Program THE AKRON CANTON AIRPORT
I
n January of this year, we partnered with the Akron Canton Airport to run an article on their Sunflower Program! This Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) Sunflower program helps make travel easier for people with disabilities by offering free accessories to airport guests, which discreetly indicates the traveler may need extra time or assistance while traveling through the CAK Airport. Recently the team at the airport invited our Content Director Mike to join a group that had
the opportunity to tour the airport and walk step by step through what the program looks like for those travelers who would use the service. With the holiday season being upon us and the increased traffic that our local airport sees during this busy time we thought it is the perfect month to remind you of this fantastic program should you or a loved one need to take advantage of it! NONPROFIT SP OTLIGHT > PEGASUS FARM
The Premier Therapeutic Equestrian Center
PEGASUS FARM BY SARAH SMITH
P
egasus Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Hartville was founded in 1985 by three Canton City School teachers who envisioned more for their students with special needs. Its mission is to create a community that holistically supports and empowers people with diverse needs through therapeutic equestrian programs, vocational services, and recreational and social activities. The organization offers children and adults who face challenges in their lives the opportunity for physical activity, recreation, and social connection. The farm began with five students and two horses on a 120-acre farm and grew to 70 students in the second year. The farm now serves over 500 students annually. These individuals may face emotional, behavioral, cognitive,
developmental, or physical challenges or a combination of these conditions. Pegasus Farm became one of the first facilities to receive accreditation by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) in its first year of operation. The farm has successfully maintained the highest level of accreditation PATH offers year after year. All instructors at the farm are individually certified by PATH and by the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) in one or more categories of instruction and at one or more levels of achievement. Today, Pegasus Farm is one of the largest, most programmatically diverse therapeutic equestrian centers in the United States. Therapeutic Equestrian Center – Take Flight Program
Pegasus Farm provides various equine activities, predominantly horseback riding, for individuals from the age of 3 through adulthood with diverse needs to promote positive physical, motor, cognitive and social development. Participants are placed in a class of up 66
December 2023
to six individuals according to their age, interest, and ability. Students form lasting friendships and a special bond with their horses vital in their growth and development. For students where riding may not be suitable or who are interested in a different
activity, Pegasus Farm offers carriage driving or unmounted lessons. A financial assistance program is available. Emily started riding at Pegasus at age nine. Over her 13 years, she has gone from riding to volunteering to now being an employee at the farm. Christi, Emily’s mother, cannot imagine a life without Pegasus. “The strides that Emily has made are remarkable,” she said. “She is no longer the shy girl in the corner. She is now more social and responsible.” Wings – Adult Day Services
Pegasus Farm is a certified provider through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities and provides community-based, integrated vocational habilitation services to adults with developmental disabilities. Participation in the Wings program is contingent upon eligibility through Ohio’s waiver program. Individuals learn employment and independent living skills through opportunities on the farm or at
Pegasus Farm’s Country Store and Gardens. The Country Store, open to the public six days a week, offers gluten-free and organic food products, local products, bulk foods, and craft items. The five-
acre Wellness Garden provides not only an employment opportunity for the Wings program but all-natural, fresh garden vegetables, fruits, and flowers sold in the store for the community. The Military Family Center (second farm location)
Since 2007, Pegasus Farm has provided equine activities to area veterans. Nearly 5,000 hours of service have been dedicated to helping veterans build connections and support, helping them confront life challenges. Through a partnership with local Rotaries and the generosity of seven foundations, a 20acre farm in Louisville
was purchased and renovated in 2017. The MFC provides equestrian activities and counseling services. All services are free to veterans, military, first responders, and their families. Nearly 200 volunteers provide more than 13,000 hours of service at Pegasus Farm every year, making the programs possible and affordable. The riders count on the volunteers for assistance as well as the social interaction that is vital to their emotional and physical well-being. Volunteer opportunities include working in their classes, gardening, working in The Country Store, property maintenance, office work, and serving on committees and the Board of Trustees. Gifts-in-kind and financial gifts are appreciated and vital to the preservation of the organization. Financial gifts can be designated to support programs or the 36 specially trained horses. Horse sponsorships are available, providing donors with updates on their horse and personal visits.
Pegasus Farm is located at 7490 Edison St. NE in Hartville. More information is available at www. pegasusfarm.org, on Facebook, or by calling 330-935-2300.

SP ONSOR SP OTLIGHT > THE BOHEMIAN MAMA
All-Natural Personal Care Products With A Purpose THE BOHEMIAN MAMA BY SARAH SMITH
The time came. Her boys were just about finished with high school, and she needed to find her new purpose. Vivian Brinkman had been a stay-at-home mom for 17 years, a role she embraced and loved and in which she thrived. The thought of working in a corporate setting for 8 hours a day just didn’t seem to fit. Vivian is a first-generation American. Her parents, immigrants from Chios, Greece, brought with them an entrepreneurial spirit. “I believe each of us was created on purpose for a purpose and most of the time we can’t see past our own limitations to live to our fullest potential. Whether it’s physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual, I want to help people unlock these potentials!” Vivian said. Having been introduced to the world of essential oils and botanicals in 2014, Vivian wanted to learn more. She attended her first wellness seminar with Dr. Phillip Freitchy, a
70
December 2023
botanist and professor with Trinity Health, and her passion was ignited. She then received certification in an essential oil treatment called Raindrop Therapy and began giving the treatment to new clients. “Once I learned how many toxic chemicals were in our everyday personal care products and how they affect the body, I couldn’t unlearn it.” added Vivian. With this knowledge, she created an allnatural deodorant for her family.
Never expecting to have her own business, Vivian started working on formulating more products for family and friends for her own pleasure. In 2016, Debbie Marshall from Marshalls Antique Warehouse invited Vivian to a “Meet the Maker” event in her shop. “We still laugh about this,” Vivian explained. “I didn’t see myself as a maker, just a stay-at-home mom wanting to help others live a better quality of life by sharing what goes on your body is absorbed into your
bloodstream and can wreak havoc with hormones, the endocrine system, and so much more. I just wanted to share.” With that Vivian’s new purpose was discovered. Using her Instagram name and the love of being a mama, she
created The Bohemian Mama, a health and wellness company that hand-makes all-natural personal care products and remedies. The company makes and sells products from Arnica rubs that help with muscular pain and inflammation,
to sinus balms to aid with sinus pressure, to the number one selling magnesium body butter which helps moisturize as well as replenish an essential mineral in the body. Today, The Bohemian Mama participates in more than 30 Maker’s Markets a year, sells its products in roughly 20 shops, and has a growing online store. The company makes about 25 products using herbs and minerals that help restore balance and support the body’s natural healing process. “I never expected this small product-based business to make such a huge impact on the world around us, or for it to support our family,” exclaimed Vivian. “I still pinch myself any time an order comes in, someone sends a message to let me know how our products affect them, or when we receive a raving review.” The company hosts wellness workshops and retreats, featuring various wellness experts, at its newly renovated BoMa Barn, in Diamond, OH. Vivian also supports her artist friends every year at an open house in the BoMa Barn, showcasing several vendors and their products. “The vision of the BoMa Barn is still coming to fruition,” said Vivian, “but as a friend once said to me, the barn is the perfect metaphor for our lives. We’re all still a work in progress, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get started on our dreams”. Vivian’s number one piece of advice in life is to not be afraid to say YES to what God has called you to do. “There’s a world of people depending on you to live up to your full potential and you have no clue where your yeses will take you,” she added. Vivian is madly in love with her husband of 24 years, her kids are her heroes, she loves Jesus, and she has a passion for making an impact in the world around her by following her purpose and being the best version of herself. The Bohemian Mama is located at 3525 McClintocksburg Rd. in Diamond. More information can be found at www.boma.guru or by calling 330-936-4645. Akron & Canton Special Needs Living
