In the quiet town of Navarre, nestled in Stark County, Ohio, there is a remarkable young woman who has overcome incredible odds, defied expectations, and now inspires everyone she meets. Meet Waleili Gregory, a 17-year-old Navarre native who personifies strength, resilience, and the power of unconditional love.

Baby Jane Doe is Born Defying Challenges

Waleili, affectionately known as “Baby Jane Doe” when she was born in 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Canton, arrived in this world 3 1/2 months prematurely, weighing a mere 1.5 pounds. Twice, she needed to be resuscitated. Her incredible journey began as her parents, Lisa and Denny Gregory, volunteered to be her caregivers, offering her comfort and care, knowing the odds were stacked against her. This decision marked the start of their extraordinary journey. Waleili’s health gradually improved, leading to the Gregorys becoming her foster care providers.

Eventually, adoption was on the horizon, and they eagerly embraced the opportunity to make her a permanent part of their family. In a process filled with challenges, 16 months later, Waleili officially became their daughter. They chose the name “Waleili,” which means “hummingbird” in Cherokee, a fitting name for a small yet determined young lady.

The Power of Love and Resilience in This Hummingbird’s Development Waleili’s life has been a testament to the power of love and resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges and diagnoses, her development has been nothing short of amazing. She’s a 12th-grade student at Fairless High School, excelling academically and earning a spot on the Honor Roll every semester. Waleili has also ventured into part-time employment, receiving high praise from her employers. Her journey is a reminder that challenges can be conquered with determination and unwavering support.

The Gregorys have been fortunate to access resources like Help Me Grow, Stark DD, SCDJFS, The Arc of Ohio, Sharing Solutions, Spectrum Education Center at Mt. Union, ASPIES, and more, which have played a vital role in Waleili’s growth. Her inspiring journey resonates with a poem titled “Welcome to Holland” by Emily Perl Kingsley, a source of inspiration for her parents.

Waleili’s extracurricular activities help continue her growth, including her involvement in student council, yearbook, and Tae Kwon Do, further enriching her life. The story of her deep connection with squirrels, nurturing relationships with nearly 50 of them during the COVID pandemic, is a testament to her unique and caring spirit.

But Waleili’s story isn’t just about overcoming adversity; it’s about giving back. Despite her history of traumatic medical experiences, she decided to become a blood donor, conquering her fears and donating blood to save lives. Her courage is an inspiration to us all. Waleili’s pursuit of independence is another remarkable chapter in her life. At the age of 17, she embarked on a journey to obtain her temporary driver’s license. With dedication and hard work, she passed her temps test with flying colors, proving that determination knows no bounds.

Taekwondo Became the Push This Hummingbird Needed Waleili’s story is also a testament to the power of community and the impact of the people who believe in her. A special mention goes to Grand Master Jong Woon Kim, who welcomed Waleili into his Taekwondo academy, pushing her limits physically and mentally, ultimately helping her earn her 3rd Dan Black Belt. Mom, Lisa Gregory, reflects on the impact Taekwondo has had on Waleili’s life: We have always wanted Waleili to have an active social life. But, as a child, Waleili has never been interested in the traditional sports, youth groups, and social clubs in which “typical” kids tend to participate. In early 2015, a dear friend named Nick Sopher recommended a martial arts studio that his son Matt was involved with. Matt (also diagnosed with Autism) was featured in the June edition of Special Needs Living. Nick thought that Waleili might benefit from this activity in the same way that Matt had been benefitting.

The following day, we scheduled an appointment at the World Championship Taekwondo Academy in North Canton, led by World Champion, Grand Master Jong Woon Kim. At our initial meeting, Grand Master Kim patiently listened as we ran down our list of Waleili’s numerous diagnoses, medical conditions, disabilities, and other special needs. Once we finished, he smiled and said, “Bring her to me— I will teach her.”

So, for the next 2 1/2 years, we brought Waleili to Grand Master Kim’s TKD studio every Friday evening for a one-hour private lesson. He was very firm with her—and pushed her to her limits, both physically and mentally. But, he was also very compassionate and fun-loving with her. Every session ended with a hug and a word of encouragement. Waleili continued to work hard as she transitioned from private lessons to group classes with (mostly) “typical” students of various ages. In November 2017, Waleili earned her 1st Dan (Degree) Black Belt. In November 2019, she earned her 2nd Dan Black Belt; And, in November 2021, she earned her 3rd Dan Black Belt— an achievement attained by less than 1% of all those who begin TKD classes.

The Babysitter and Hummingbird Unite!

In this journey of resilience and growth, one person has played an especially significant role. Chelsea Lanier-Ball, who initially babysat Waleili, continued to inspire her long after they parted ways.

“When Waleili was about four years old, we started looking for a little help with childcare—i.e. a babysitter,” says Lisa. “But, with our daughter’s special needs, we were hesitant to leave her with “just anyone.” A family member recommended a 16-year-old local girl whom we were familiar with named Chelsea. Chelsea had a good reputation in our community, and was an excellent student.”

Chelsea and Waleili instantly hit it off! Their bond only seemed to get stronger as life continued to bring them closer together–even when Chelsea went away to college at the University of Akron. They continued to see each other and chat, even while apart. However, she always carried Waleili in her heart, following the journey from a babysitter to an award-winning Intervention Specialist in Special Education, and winning the 2022 National Amazing Teacher Award. Waleili even earned the title “Bridesmaid” at Chelsea’s wedding!

This Hummingbird’s Dreams Continue to Inspire Us All

As we celebrate Waleili’s incredible journey, it’s essential to remember her dreams. She aspires to have a job, earn money, buy a car, and even travel to Europe! These dreams are not just individual aspirations; they are testaments to the boundless potential within us all.

Waleili Gregory’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, the power of love, and the unwavering support of her family and community. She has proven that with determination, resilience, and the right support system, one can achieve remarkable heights.

Waleili is truly a hummingbird who soars beyond expectations, inspiring us all to embrace life’s challenges and turn them into opportunities for growth and transformation.
