Dr R S Gibson Chief Executive Principal
It gives me great pleasure to write the foreword for the 2012 Federation Presentation Evening. This evening’s event marks the success of The Ridings’ Federation and its two Academies. The certificates and awards being presented to the students illustrate the strength of the Federation in ensuring high standards and raising aspirations. The academic success of both Academies after just three years is outstanding and is testimony to the commitment and hard work of the students gathered in the hall this evening. The distinctness of the Federation in providing both national and international qualifications brings with it opportunities for students to access employment or Higher Education both in this country and abroad. The uniqueness of the Federation can also be seen following the incorporation of the Woodlands Primary Phase into the Yate International Academy, establishing the first 4-19 All Through Academy in South Gloucestershire. This evening’s event symbolises all that the Federation represents. As one of our educational partners, the University of Bath plays a key role in supporting the Federation’s vision for transforming and delivering education in the 21st Century and I am delighted that Mr Chris Smith, Chair of the Academy Trust, will be presenting the University of Bath Award for Promoting Internationalism. The needs and aspirations of our students, parents and wider community will always remain at the top of our agenda. I hope you enjoy your evening.

Academy Principal Winterbourne
Welcome to our Federation Presentation of Awards Evening. This is the eighth year this important Federation event is being held and we are delighted to host it in the magniďŹ cent surroundings of The Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol. This evening is designed to celebrate and honour all that is best about the students at Winterbourne International Academy and Yate International Academy. The Records of Achievement and the range of prizes being awarded this evening reect very well upon the commitment and dedication of all our students. We would like to thank Mr Vernon Samuels for agreeing to be present at this important event. It is certainly a great honour for us to welcome him to our Presentation Evening and to thank him for giving up his time to be with us. To all the students present this evening, let us take this opportunity of wishing you well for the future in whatever path you have chosen. You are all a great credit to the Federation and the Academies. Music this evening has been provided by Tim Selman and we are very grateful for this important contribution to the evening.

Vernon Samuels Former GB Olympian
Bristol-born Vernon Samuels is a qualified and experienced development and training professional with extensive experience in the areas of partnership development, community regeneration and organisational development. Vernon’s success in athletics was in the triple jump, and this began at a very young age. He earned the title of All England Schools’ Champion when he was just 14 years old, and he then represented England in the British Schools’ Championships. By the age of nineteen, he was an international athlete representing Great Britain, performing alongside Tessa Sanderson and Linford Christie. Vernon was invited by several American universities to train and study in the USA; he accepted a place at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1984, and studied Business and Psychology, achieving his degree in 1988. Vernon has worked for 20 years in a senior and middle management capacity with a major focus on business, organisational and partnership development. During this time he has worked with national, regional and local government, private and voluntary sector organisations to initiate and develop a number of strategic initiatives and partnerships. What motivates Vernon to employ his talents and skills is a strong desire to add value to the lives of individuals and the organisations they work for, to improve results and outcomes for customers and the wider society. When businesses partnerships and communities want to achieve superior results, Vernon has consistently demonstrated that his ‘can do’ attitude, coupled with an ability to learn and adapt to new situations will often create the practical solutions that count in the face of many challenges.

Federation Highlights 2011-2012 As The Ridings’ Federation of Academies moves into its fourth year, there is much to celebrate. Student achievement, whether academic, vocational, sporting or musical has been exceptional in each of the Federation’s Academies and this was reflected in the recent Ofsted inspection reports. Examination results for the academic year 2011-2012 were very pleasing with Winterbourne International Academy achieving 74% 5A*-C (inc. English and Mathematics) while Yate International Academy achieved 49% 5A*-C (inc. English and Mathematics). It is also pleasing to report that the Woodlands Primary Phase performance was good and encouraging, with two of the three ‘floor standards’ being achieved in English and Mathematics (Level 4+) at 78% against a national floor standard of 60%, and Mathematics (Two Levels of Progress) at 91% against a national floor standard of 86%. These results reflect the Federation’s focus upon the standards agenda, and with it the hard work and professionalism of all those who work in each Academy. The Yate International Academy new build opened on schedule on 1st September 2012, providing students with an outstanding learning environment fit for the 21st Century. At Winterbourne International Academy work has commenced on the new build, which is scheduled to open to students on 1st September 2014. These state of the art facilities amount to a total capital investment in the Federation’s two Academies of approximately £36million, indicating a considerable vote confidence in the Federation by the Government. Both the public examination results and international developments across the Federation remain cornerstones to the delivery of the Federation’s vision as set out in the Education Brief and agreed with the Secretary of State for Education. The introduction of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at Winterbourne International Academy in September 2012 further embeds the international ethos and vision of the Federation. For the first time, students achieved places at Oxford University via both the IB Diploma and the traditional A Level route. Delivering high quality education, high academic standards, raising aspirations and promoting internationalism continues to be at the centre of the Federation’s long term planning.
