Principal’s welcome message Dear Parents/Carers The end of the Academy year is upon us at last, and what a year it has been! In the recent Year 6 Parents’ Induction Evening, I was reflecting on the events of the last year and thanking the prospective Year 7 parents for realising that, despite Wintebourne being in a transitional phase, the Academy would be a fantastic place for their child to attend.
Principal’s welcome message continued… What a difference a year makes! We are now in a completely different place as an Academy. We have a dynamic new Chief Executive Principal, the anticipated examination results look healthy and the new lesson score system is showing us that 96% of students are having good or outstanding lessons. The Academy also continues to have many excellent team and individual sporting successes and we have had a term packed full of excellent enrichment activities including foreign and local trips, fieldwork visits, concerts, drama and dance performances, the residency of the English Touring Opera, the Year 5 open Evening, the Year 11 and 13 Proms and not to forget a superb Sports Day. I personally would like to pay tribute to the students, staff and parents who have contributed to this unstoppable momentum. The Summer Term is always a time for moving on and I am thinking particularly of our cherished year 11 and 13. The year 11 and 13 graduations always bring a mixture of joy and sadness. This year was no exception. At a time when departing students up and down the country are wreaking havoc in schools with “muck up days”, our students conducted themselves with pride, respect and dignity. The various final assemblies, barbeques, shirt signing and proms were events which showed the loyalty and maturity of our students and the genuine affection and esteem staff held for them. Many tears were shed on both sides as we said our final goodbyes. I would like to wish our departing students every success for their future. I am so glad that many Year 11 students are staying on to 6th form and I look forward to welcoming them back in September. I want say farewell to other students throughout the school who are moving on this year, particularly those in year 9 who are moving on to college: I want you to know that you are always welcome back to Winterbourne! Also, thank you to all those colleagues who are leaving us this week; you have served the students at Winterbourne International Academy with distinction and we shall miss you. On the subject of moving on, I am sure that by now you would all have heard my own news that I have gladly agreed to remain in post until my successor is appointed. It is a pleasure to continue to serve Winterbourne International Academy and its wonderful students and staff. In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students, parents and colleagues a splendid summer vacation and I look forward to seeing you all at the start of the new academic year in September. Mr Richard Haupt, Academy Principal

Pegasus Guild News – by Mrs Watkins Pegasus Guild have a lot to celebrate this term. The start of the CRISP tokens has such a positive influence on the guild and many students have really made an effort to collect the yellow tokens by showing Courtesy, Resilience, Integrity, Self-reflection and Purpose. It’s been great to meet many of the Pegasus students on a one-to-one basis since taking over from Mrs Calver as Head of Guild. I was incredibly proud of our guild as they fought all day during sport day. We finished a very close 3rd, trailing 6 points from 2nd place and 12 from 1st. I feel that the Guild really came together and gave it their best. In the music department, ‘Music from the Movies’ was a fantastic evening together with the Opera - it was a fantastic evening for Pegasus Guild; again you did us proud. Thanks to all those that took part and helped to encourage your fellow Guild members to improve fantastically from coming in at last place in 2015 to 1st place in 2016. Now onwards to retain it in 2017. The atmosphere was amazing and the support for your team mates really helped push everyone to achieve their best, well done all! In particular well done to Louis Merrett, year 10, for Triple Gold in the 200m, 400m and Long Jump, Holly Reed, year 10, for Double Gold in the Javelin and 800m and Molly Orchard, year 9, for Double Gold in the 1500m and 800m. WIA Sixth Form Centre Sixth Form Prom Sixth Form students celebrated the end of their time at the Academy with a fantastic prom on Wednesday 29th June. All students gathered at The Marriott, College Green to celebrate the end of an era. Despite the awful weather, students arrived in style looking more glamourous than ever. Year 13 joined their teachers for one last goodbye and a chance to remember all the good times they have had at Winterbourne International Academy. The night involved the telling of many stories, memories all students will love to remember for years to come. It saw friendship groups come together and more importantly the year group shine as one. Miss Jolosa said ‘As Head of Year it was a joy to see all the students laugh and share so many memories with each other, they presented themselves brilliantly and their behaviour was a compliment to themselves and the Academy’. On behalf of all Sixth Form tutors and the staff at Winterbourne, we would like to wish all the Year 13 students the best of luck for the future, it has been a pleasure.
Year 11 to Year 12 summer work We recognise that after your GCSEs you have a lovely and well-deserved summer off, but ask that you engage with these tasks over the summer so that you enter Year 12 with an understanding of your courses and ready to learn. Whilst we advise that you complete these tasks in time for the first day in September, there is a final deadline of 23rd September 2016 to allow students to complete the work where any course changes take place in the first few weeks of term. Should you have any questions about the tasks, please email the specified teacher within the summer work pack. Please follow the following link to access the work packs:

Training for work opportunities As you know, the swimming pool at Winterbourne is a wonderful benefit to our Academy. What you may not be aware of is that many of our own students work as lifeguards in the evenings and weekends as lifeguards at the pool. This provides a wonderful opportunity to learn a new skill, work in a safe environment, use it as a stepping stone into a job within the leisure industry or earn some money in preparation for University. No change is being made to the start time of the Academy Day, but at 8:45am students will now start Period 1 and their formal learning (this lesson will include their morning registration mark). Tutor time will take place at the end of the day, as this is a more effective means by which to conduct their weekly tutorial programme, assemblies, reviews of learning etc. Break and Lunch take place 20 minutes earlier in the day. The lunch break is being shortened by 5minutes to 45 minutes. Students will depart the Academy 5 minutes earlier at 3:10pm each day. Pupil premium review 2016 Following an invitation from CEP, Adam Williams, we participated in an external review of our Pupil Premium practice in late June. South Gloucestershire Advisor, Judith Mee, and Dr Peter Daw, from the Department for Education, spent the day at the Academy meeting staff, visiting lessons and interviewing students. The reviewers identified many examples of good practice at the Academy and particularly commented on the good practice demonstrated in the Sixth Form, as well as the very obvious care and support WIA staff provide to students eligible for the Pupil Premium. Our wide and imaginative range of interventions was also identified as a positive strength of our work. The review team also confirmed that our own self-evaluation is accurate and that we are focusing on the right areas to develop our work over the forthcoming academic year. We are particularly focused on developing classroom differentiation, marking and feedback and our use of data to inform intervention strategies.
Music from the movies concert On Monday 18th July students from across the Academy (and some primary students from Elm Park School) put on a fantastic 'Music from the Movies' Summer Concert. The audience was treated to music from a wide range of films including Star Wars, Happy Feet and even Wayne's World! During the event there were also some fantastic dance sequences from groups of students who sprung into action and got the audience clapping along with them. Throughout the evening multimedia was used to show film clips and posters, adding another interesting dimension. The finale was a terrific combined performance of the classic ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince....a great evening and showcase of the wonderful range of talent that our students have. Congratulations and thanks again to all students and staff involved!'
Sports Day 2016 Sports day 2016 was another fantastic success! This is the second time we have tried this all day format as an Academy. Students from years 7-10 and year 12 came down to our sports fields for a day of competition and Guild celebration with all students encouraged to compete in at least one event or assist in the running of the events. When watching Team GB in the 2012 Olympics I was taken back by the togetherness and unity of all of the athletes. Even though they were competing in different events in different parts of the country, they shared a common purpose and vision and were all the better for it. In this vein, all of our students were encouraged to support anyone and everyone from their own Guild to achieve togetherness and success. They did this brilliantly! The atmosphere was one of fun, competition and collaboration. From the 100m to the javelin, from football to rounders, students conducted themselves in a professional manner. However, despite all of the fun, there had to be a winner! It came down to the last events; the 4 x 100m relay and the football. The whole Academy waited in anticipation for the results until Aquila are announced as the 2016 champions! Well done to all the students who competed and thank you to everyone involved in the running of the day.
More sports news Following trials, Sophie Hillyerd has been given another year's contract with Bristol City WFC. She will be part of the new Regional Talent Club programme. Also, congratulations to student Lexi Johnson in year 7 for achieving bronze and silver medal in West Bromwich to qualify for a place in the world championships! Lexi will take part in forms and sparring for a chance to become world champion! The event will take place in October in Manchester.

We have been given an “Excellence Award” from Routes into Languages for our regular involvement with students on extended language projects (such as speaking competitions, drama events, parcel exchanges, poster competitions, music competitions and other activities).
It was a fantastic performance with both Made In Bristol TV and the Gazette turning up to report on the dress rehearsal. ___________________________
There were winners in several different categories, but Hannah Walters in year 8 was the overall winner. This six layered cake looked incredible and tasted great but what clinched it was the red layer across the bottom which represented those who experienced bullying. ___________________________
