CORE SUBJECTS STUDIED English

Mathematics

At Woodlands Primary Phase we teach children skills that will enable them to become competent and better communicators.

The curriculum will provide the necessary skills to handle Mathematics in everyday situations through developing...

Experienced readers become confident writers and as such we aim to ensure our children become independent and motivated in both.

• an ability to solve problems and think for themselves;

Children are taught spelling, handwriting, sentence structure and punctuation skills across a range of writing forms in order to become successful writers. As well as our well-stocked library, each classroom is provided with a reading area and a wide selection of books including; fiction, poetry and information texts. All children are given a reading diary to encourage them to share books at home.

Science Science is an essential part of the learning process and at the Primary Phase is as much about learning skills as learning facts about the world. The skill of scientific investigation is a nurtured extension of the children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring and discovering. We aim to develop children’s scientific skills, knowledge, understanding and attitudes through a range of practical activities and investigations.

• a positive attitude towards Mathematics; • information and ideas; • an enjoyment of Mathematics. Every class has a designated Mathematics area with an appropriate range of resources that children access freely. Mathematical skills such as mental strategies, mathematical operations and knowledge of shape, space and measures are taught, then reinforced and applied through a topic approach.

OTHER SUBJECTS STUDIED Art and Design

Design and Technology

History and Geography

We encourage our children to learn from a variety of stimuli, including the diverse world of art, craft and design through exploring western and multi-cultural resources. By displaying work in the Primary Phase and the local community we celebrate and value the achievements of the children and provide a stimulating and ever-changing educational environment.

In Design and Technology we develop the child’s ability to generate ideas and then to plan, make, test and evaluate them. Our classrooms and Food Technology room are equipped to enable children to learn and develop important skills with tools and materials.

Through studying the past and their environment, children gain awareness, appreciation and knowledge. We use the rich resources in and around Woodlands Primary Phase and the local area. We deliver a practical understanding and bring the subjects alive for each child. This takes place through investigation of artefacts, stories, local records, maps, documents, interviews and photographs.

“96% of parents agree that their child makes good or excellent progress here” Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Our curriculum ensures that all children are confident and have the necessary skills to understand and use ICT within all subject areas. In order to achieve this we have a commitment to ensure that the children have access to the most up-to-date equipment we can provide including computers and interactive whiteboards in every classroom.

Modern Foreign Languages We encourage children from Foundation Stage to Year 2 to develop their confidence and have fun with languages through learning songs and games ready for when they enter Key Stage 2. From Year 3 onwards languages are formally taught using a range of curriculum resources. Being part of an all-through academy, children benefit from specialist Modern Language teachers from the Secondary Phase.

Music We enable our children to gain an understanding and enjoyment of music from different times and cultures. The Primary Phase is well resourced and provides the children with access to tuned and un-tuned instruments allowing opportunities to listen, compose and perform. All children are given the opportunity to take part in a performance during each academic year through concerts, assemblies and workshops.

Physical Education Within the Woodlands Primary Phase we have two well-equipped halls, playgrounds, a large playing field and outdoor play equipment where we provide children with the opportunities to develop their physical skills through gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, outdoor activities and swimming. Members of professional clubs regularly visit the Primary Phase to coach the children and work with teachers.

Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) provides children with the knowledge and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives. Throughout Woodlands Primary Phase we believe in developing a respect for oneself, respect for others, responsibility for one’s own actions and a responsibility to family, friends, the Academy and the wider community. A carefully structured approach to PSHCE has been developed alongside the Secondary Phase.

Religious Education This is an integral part of the curriculum and is taught in accordance with the agreed syllabus. Children should learn about religion in order to develop their own beliefs, spirituality, values, and to learn to respect those of others.

12

WOODLANDS ALL-THROUGH ACADEMY

HOME LEARNING Research over a number of years has shown that children make better progress when the Academy and parents/carers work closely together. Children benefit considerably when parents/carers take an active interest in their child’s work and we enable your involvement in different ways, including the provision of Home Learning activities.

Monitoring, Testing and Feedback To ensure children make good progress whilst at the Academy, teachers monitor academic performance, both formally (through tests and end of unit assessments) and informally (during each lesson). to make judgements about what they need to do to move learning forward. Parent/Carer consultation meetings are held three times a year when parents/carers are invited to meet the teacher and discuss their child’s progress. You may however make an appointment to discuss your child’s learning at any time during the academic year. In term 4 you will receive a written report of your child’s progress and targets for future development.

Educational Visits Educational visits can provide stimulus and support to work being covered as part of the curriculum. ‘Real-life’ opportunities for our children enable them to achieve a greater understanding of the world around them through direct experience.

Residential Trips Residential visits enable children to develop independence and resilience through a range of adventurous activities as well as the social skills needed to get along with others for a sustained period of time. The children always enjoy the visits we plan and they help to establish good relationships for the rest of the academic year. Year 5 children enjoy a two-day residential visit, while Year 6 children love the residential week at the Acorn Activity Centre in the Brecon Beacons.

Business Links The University of Bath regularly welcome our children for extra-curricular days. These are normally based around a certain subject, or are designed to give children a flavour of what University life is like. Airbus UK regularly visit the younger children and run exciting Maths and Engineering workshops, aimed at boosting understanding in the subjects. Bristol Zoo - staff from the Zoo, including archeologists and designers, have visited Woodlands and delivered some fascinating workshops Linux IT staff give their time generously by coming into the Primary Phase to read with our pupils.

Library Facilities We are fortunate enough to have a lovely library at the heart of Woodlands Primary Phase with a large selection of books for children to choose from for their home reading. Children learn to use the library system and to use their reading skills to acquire information.

Secondary Phase Subject Specialists Being part of an all-through Academy, our children can benefit from the knowledge and experience of subject specialist teachers from the Secondary Phase. In areas such as Modern Languages, Music and PE, Secondary Phase teachers share their knowledge and enthusiasm for their subjects and give children an incredibly engaging learning experience.

Award Winning Playtime We are fortunate enough to have spacious grounds surrounding the main building; perfect for playtimes and outdoor learning activities. Our outdoor provision has won us the coveted Platinum OPAL award for Outdoor Play and Learning.

Children with Special Needs

Interacting with Parents and Carers

We are recognised by OFSTED as a caring and inclusive Academy with staff committed to meeting the needs of every child. Woodlands Primary Phase is able to draw on the expertise of other services including a Speech and Language Therapist, Physiotherapist and Psychologist.

Parents/carers play a vital part in children’s education and as such we want to get to know you, and for you to feel welcome here. We are always delighted for parents and carers to be involved in activities within their children’s learning.

Facilities for the physically disabled include, ramped access and a specialist toilet. We are also very fortunate to have facilities and experienced staff to teach children with hearing impairment and our OFSTED 2012 report recognised the progress made by pupils in the HIRB (Hearing Impaired Resource Base) as outstanding.

We are pleased to have the support of parent/carers both in the classroom and for our social events. These events include children’s discos, quiz nights, fashion shows, summer fairs and Christmas fairs. Parents/carers are kept informed by newsletters which are sent out by the Assistant Principal every term. Class teachers send out a newsletter detailing the curriculum their child will be studying that term and how they can be helped at home. We also use a text messaging service to support effective home/Academy communication.

“Leaders work very closely with parents and carers” Ofsted, 2012

All-Through Academy Unlike other local primary schools, once your child is in Year 6 at Woodlands Primary Phase you needn’t worry about finding them a space at a secondary school. Woodlands Primary Phase children are guaranteed a place at Yate International Academy, giving peace of mind and continuity of standards and expectations to children and parents alike. In September 2013, we opened Woodlands Nursery for three to four year olds on the same site as Woodlands Primary Phase. Children at the nursery are now guaranteed a place at the Primary Phase and subsequently a place at the Secondary Phase.

Good behaviour is rewarded in a variety of ways: Golden Time, certificates, class awards, verbal praise, stickers and tea and cake with the Assistant Principal. Sanctions are put in place to respond to bad behaviour. This takes the form of a warning followed by a behaviour lesson. Parents/carers receive a text message to inform them of the rewards and sanctions that their children receive.

Bullying Bullying is the exercise of power by one person over another involving repeated, deliberate, threatening or hurtful behavior and is completely unacceptable at our Academy.

We are asked to keep a record of absences for which we do not receive a telephone message or letter. These absences are termed “unauthorised” and will appear on your child’s annual report.

In order to combat bullying in whatever form it may occur, we have in place strategies for dealing with it promptly. The Federation Anti-Bullying Policy details how the Academy detects and deals with bullying. The full policy is available on the Ridings’ Federation website, www.trfa.org.uk

Behaviour and Discipline

The Federation takes E-safety and cyber bullying very seriously and endeavours to ensure that children and their families are aware of the potential risks of using the internet. Please ask at the office for a leaflet which gives you information on how to keep your child safe online.

The children and staff together have decided upon two sets of rules: ‘During Academy Day’ and ‘At Lunchtime’. These are displayed in each classroom. At the basis of these rules is the Academy Code: Think before you act.

Charging for Academy Activities

Meals Service

Our policy on charging for Academy activities can be found on the Yate International Academy website - www.trfyia.org.uk

The standard of catering is excellent and parents/carers are welcome to come and “sample the cooking”. Requests for any special diets can be made to the Academy. Payment for lunches should be made on the first day of the week. Please send the money in a sealed envelope bearing your child’s name and showing the days on which meals are required. Sometimes, when children need to stay for lunch unexpectedly, they can bring the money on that particular day.

Collective Worship Assemblies are held daily, during which an act of worship, aiming to develop the children’s spiritual awareness, takes place. These assemblies, which are broadly Christian, are led by staff, children and visitors. Parents/Carers are invited to join us for class assemblies which take place on identified afternoons. Parents/Carers have the right to ask for their child to be withdrawn from collective worship or religious education.

Fire Regulations Fire drills are held once each term and occasionally more often. The children are expected to know the fire exits and alternative exit routes, and to proceed by walking to the allotted assembly points in the playground.

Fruit Tuck Children may bring fruit for a playtime snack. Key Stage 1 pupils will be provided with fruit at playtime as part of a Government initiative to encourage children to eat fruit and vegetables. Fruit tuck may also be bought from the Primary Phase canteen for 15p per day. The kitchen also sells freshly baked bread and butter at Friday breaktime.

Holidays and Absence A list of holiday dates for the forthcoming year can be found on the Woodlands Primary Phase website. We ask that you take your holidays during the Academy breaks. However, should it prove necessary for you to take your annual holiday during term time, please complete and return a “holiday form”, available from the Academy Primary Phase office. Permission will be considered at the discretion of the Assistant Principal, following the Academy attendance policy. No holiday will be authorised in Term 1 or Term 5. The maximum length of authorised holiday will be 5 days. It is essential that you notify the Academy Primary Phase, either by telephone or letter, at the start of any period of absence of your child from the Academy. If for any reason you wish your child to be excused from P.E., games or swimming lessons, the class teacher should be notified by letter.

Packed lunches may be brought and eaten at separate tables provided in the dining hall. Chocolate, sweets, squash, fizzy drinks and hot drinks are not allowed in the Academy. Children are encouraged to bring water in an unspillable and unbreakable drinks container. From September 2014, the Primary Phase will be introducing universal free school meals for all children in Key Stage 1.

Medical Matters Routine visits are made by the Nurse. The Federation policy is not to administer any medicines in the Academy. Medication will only be administered when it is a long course, which specifies a dose is required during the Academy day and is necessary for the child to continue to be educated at the Academy. Forms are available from the office to be completed and handed to office staff with the medication for administration. If your child becomes ill at the Academy, we will ask you to collect him/her so that proper care and attention can be given. For this purpose we need to know where we can contact you during the Academy Primary Phase day, and we would ask you to ensure that the Academy has this information (a telephone number for home or place of work, or that of a willing neighbour, is vital).

Racial Tolerance At Woodlands Primary Phase, children will be prepared for an ethnically diverse society. The Academy Primary Phase will work hard to promote racial equality and harmony by preventing and challenging racism.

Relationships and Sex Education At Woodlands Primary Phase, the Academy Council have agreed that Relationships and Sex Education will be taught to all children from Year 1 - Year 6. We believe that effective relationships and sex education is essential if young people are to make responsible and well-informed decisions about their lives. We aim to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development within a carefully

20

WOODLANDS ALL-THROUGH ACADEMY

structured programme. We wish to develop an understanding of the importance of respect, love and care within marriage or long-term loving relationships. Through relationships and sex education we will be teaching young people about responsible sex, sexuality and sexual health in a supportive, sensitive environment. We use the Channel 4 ‘All About Us’ materials to teach Relationships and Sex Education within a secure, safe environment, in mixed gender groups, usually in the normal class setting. A meeting is held in Term 5 so that parents/carers can familiarise themselves with the materials used. Parents/Carers have the right to withdraw their children from Relationships and Sex Education lessons by informing the Assistant Principal Primary Phase in writing prior to the lessons taking place.

Safeguarding The welfare of every student matters greatly throughout Yate International Academy and ‘Safeguarding’ is of paramount importance in our day-to-day contact with children and young people. Every member of our Academy community has a duty of care to identify the vulnerable and to protect every child. All staff, both teaching and non-teaching, at The Ridings’ Federation of Academies are required to make a report to Social Care Services if they think any child has come to harm, physically or emotionally, as a consequence of possible abuse.

Uniform The Woodlands Primary Phase uniform is consistent with the Yate International Academy Secondary Phase. The uniform is designed to reinforce the ethos of the Ridings’ Federation whilst generating pride amongst pupils. It also makes a clear and recognisable statement to the local community about the aspirations for excellence at the all-through Yate International Academy.
