BREAKING THE MOULD
• It’s too literal • It’s not doing what it says (visually) • It’s a bit of a cliché • I don’t feel as though it’s going to give you sufficient stand out against other degree shows around at the same time.

1 - Feedback
Leeds College of Art — End of Year show 2015
After the initial presentation we submitted to marketing we were short-listed and chosen to go and visit Peter & Paul In Sheffield. After having met with Peter & Paul we received feedback on what direction we should take the brief. Lee from P&P suggested that we change the name to something like ‘Make or Break’, this would not leave as much room for people to question as this was the problem with ‘Breaking the Mould’. He prepared a PDF which he presented to us with imagery and ideas for what we could do with this brief.

2 - Further Research
After meeting with Peter & Paul, we decided to research further into the direction which the campaign was now going in. We started to further explore methods of breaking up of typography and also how we could produce some form of physical typography which would be photographed breaking.

Concept
The overall concept had not changed that much from the original one we proposed, it simply had changed the direction it was going in. Instead of Breaking the Mould, we were now going to be using ‘Make or Break’. This further pushes one of the elements from the original concept of it being the end of university but it now had more context as to what it would be ‘Breaking the Mould’ of, which would be the work showcased.

We managed to get into the clay and 3D workshops so we started to experiment with some 3D cut out typography. We had letters which were made out of clay, MDF and acrylic.

4 - Developments
After having taken the photos of the broken up typography I had edited the shots which allowed us all to have a go at poster designs and layouts using this new imagery. We had tried a few different colour schemes which we changed through editing of the images.

We had received some more feedback from Lee at P&P about the new imagery we had been working with, and he suggested that we maybe tried something using lowercase typography. He stated that the use of the bold capital letters gave off a slightly aggressive and ‘domestic abuse’ tone to the campaign. This feedback came as a shock to us, but we soon realised what he had meant. After hearing what Lee had to say, we headed back into the workshops and aimed to produce something which was more related to art as opposed to strictly just some 3D type. We made 2 different clay plaques which used lower case letters of a different, friendlier looking typeface.
