Brief #06 — Peter & Paul White Wall Brief

Rinesh Mistry

Context

Target Audience

A little while ago, having completed work on the identity refresh project, Peter & Paul were asked by Leeds College of Art to think about how they might bring some life to the building walls. Pretty soon they identified that plastering the identity visuals on the wall wouldn’t be the best way to go so they started thinking of ideas as though the brief was almost a blank-sheet of paper – they were starting again from scratch. With what they knew about LCA, Peter & Paul defined some themes about the place and that led the thinking – it was the catalyst.

Brief

This is your building. You live here. So we want you to create something for the space that’s yours. This is your chance to become part of the fabric of the building and have a legacy even after you’ve left! Your brief is to design a piece of semi permanent artwork to live in two spaces in the Graphic Design department. Your piece can be anything so long as it lives on these walls. Anything goes: Illustration, typography, photography, installation, whatever but there are some important things to bear in mind: This has to be something that you and your course mates want to look at every day – so it has to have some aesthetic value It has to be practical – something we can feasibly produce for a moderate budget It should communicate an idea.

The target audience for this brief are current and potential LCA Students in addition to the staff who work in LCA and alumni. Consideration need to be made as the installation would potentially be viewed the general public during times like open days and exhibitions.

This brief was a collaboration with Bobby Jones.

Research

For this brief there were numerous elements that required research, ranging from anamorphic design and 3D installations.

2

2 - 3D Installations

Similar to the way that anamorphic design would be suited for the space that we were designing for, 3D installations would also work just as well. Some research into 3D installations gave me a better insight into what sort of things would be achievable.

1 - Anamorphic Design

#02

Anamorphic design was one of the main areas of design which we both researched into. Considering the space which the design was for, this was a great was to utilise the space.

Concept

The concept for this brief was to design something which emphasised what graphic design at LCA meant, in addition to all the elements that make up graphic design. The use of the letters BAGD gave it the association to the course.

5 - Final Deliverables

Using a simple bold sans serif typeface, they formed good shapes which the icons were going to be in. Each letter had a different theme or section that makes up graphic design:

The use of the individual items in each letter show how graphic design is a collection of numerous elements, and that they all need to work together but they stand alone too.

4 - Development & Variations

#03

Due to this being the first stage of the process and it was mainly focused on the idea and concept, because of this the main developments that had taken place were simple typographic choices.

5 - Final Deliverables

These were mock-ups of what the final installations would look like. The image to the left also uses a slight optical illusion on the framed panel which would reveal a ‘6’ when you walk past it, along with the use of translucent vinyl. The image on the right would be a 3D wall installation of the items cut out and mounted to the wall.
