Research

There were numerous elements that had been looked into for this brief ranging from the client’s personal and professional interests, the clients work itself in addition to contextual research into branding, logo-marks and promotional materials.

1 - Oscars Professional Interests

Oscar had prepared a PDF containing information and images from the studios and photographers that have influenced him and informed his practice. Researching into these further aided me in gaining a better understanding of Oscar’s practice and the context of some of his work.

2 - Oscars Personal Interests

Along with his professional interests and influences, Oscar also included a few personal interests and influences in the PDF, that have informed his practice and how they are related back to his work. Doing some research into these topics and interests further informed me about Oscars practice as a photographer and about him as a person.

From looking at Oscars work it is clear to see that his work is of varied style and that he does not have a specific way in which he takes all of his shots. This was something I wanted to make sure I addressed through the design of his identity. Along with being compositionally strong, Oscar’s photography uses bold and vibrant colours throughout each set, something else which I aimed to address through the branding and colour choices.

4 - Branding & Logo Mark Research

Some contextual research into existing photographer branding and logo marks was crucial to get an idea of what had already been done but also to see what deliverables to include within the branding itself. Along with primary and secondary logos the idea of using a branding system was something which I found was being used on many examples, which have been highlighted.

5 - Promotional Materials

Along with looking into existing photographer branding examples and logo mark designs, I also looked into existing promotional and stationary materials for photographers. The majority of examples which I have highlighted in the images above all utilise publications for showcasing the photographs. I particularly liked the idea of using a form of binding which can be easily editable, such as acco clips. The use of acco clips would enable Oscar to add new photographic sets and projects, further complimenting the format in which Oscar works.

6 - Initial Sketches & Visual Developments

Due to the fact that Oscar’s photography did not solely consist of shots from a camera, we had both agreed to stay away from the idea of using anything strongly related to camera lens and aperture shape, not only would this have been an untrue representation of his practice within photography but was also a personal choice that he did not want within the branding. We had initially settled for using a fairly typographic logo, but in the end it looked too bare and minimum and would not have been strong enough for use as a logo.

7 - Final Solutions

#05

The final solutions, utilise a simple box and negative space which tie in perfectly with the simple idea of framing a shot, one thing which remains through all of the media types which Oscar uses throughout his photography. With the use of an extended logo which can be applied on larger deliverables such as mailshot stickers.

8 - Early Mock Ups

Due to Oscars presentation deadline approaching, I did some quick digital mock-ups of what the final outcomes will look like that he in then include in the presentation. We had agreed to have everything produced for when he was going to be presenting the presentation, which was not for another couple of weeks.

Oscars Identity and promotional pack aims to be effective and above all suitable and easily editable for his professional needs. The minimal design of the logomarks complimented with the bold use of colour which runs through majority of the deliverables compliments the work and maintains focus on them as the subject matter. The use of triplexing for the business cards and mail-shots further emphasises this and is a subtle addition of colour to keep in line with the branding. Ease of use and production were essential for the way Oscar works enabling him to easily reproduce and add projects and photo sets add a later date.
