Research
For this brief the research which was undertaken was very focused on the contextual side. The main research which was done was into previous yearbooks and examples of editorial design. Some research into processes, finishes and stock was also undertaken. As the name had already been chosen some basic research into how we could work around it was essential as we could have went one of two ways with the name 44 Degrees having a double meaning.
1 - Previous Fine Art Yearbooks
#02
As the yearbooks are something which are produced yearly, making sure that they are different and better than ones from the previous years. Majority of the previous Fine Art yearbooks did not have layouts which complimented the work very well and this was something we wanted to address.
2 - Editorial Design
Extended Practice Submission
With the brief solely being editorial design, some contextual research into editorial helped us gain a better understanding of the design category itself. I had initially planned to design something which used various format stocks and stock sizes.

3 - Process, finishes & Stock
Some research into paper stockist, finishes and processes was another thing we made sure we looked into as the yearbooks will be professionally printed and bound therefore we had a lot more options for the what the final book would look like as opposed to if we were to produce them.

We had initially all done individual designs for the yearbook which we then pitched to the group of Final year Fine Art students who we had to liaison with throughout working on this brief. I had gone for a simpler and minimal approach to the yearbook, as after the first meeting they had specified that they did not want anything which used any bold colours and wanted the main focus to be on the work. I had also tried to use the degree symbol as a means for the contents page, but was not as effective as I had hoped. We had spoken about the use of textured and coloured stock at this stage and was something which I had roughly mocked up as an example of what the finished book would look and feel like.

5 - Final Deliverables
As the book has been sent off for printing I can only provide Mockups of what it will look like. The final design had initially started as one of Tristans designs, which we all then edited and tweaked. Along with any changes after receiving feedback from the Fine Art staff and marketing. The final book will be: B5 Size 96 pages, GF SMITH Colorplan Cool Grey with a Gravure Texture for the cover with a UV Spot Varnish finish and will be perfect bound.
