Sloe gin is a red liqueur made with gin and sloe (blackthorn) drupes, which are a small fruit relative of the plum. Sloe gin has an alcohol content between 15 and 30 percent by volume. However, the European Union has established a minimum of 25% ABV for sloe gin to be named as such. The traditional way of making sloe gin is to soak the sloes in gin. Sugar is required to ensure the sloe juice is extracted from the fruit. Most commercially sold sloe gins today are made by flavouring less expensive neutral grain spirits, although some manufacturers still use the traditional method.

1 - Logo Research
Research into existing sloe gin branding and logo design in general was crucial, as we are going to be designing a completely new brand of Sloe Gin. We had found a few good examples of branding and logotypes which fitted the tone of voice which we had in mind for the Sloe Gin we were designing.
2 - Sloe Gin Packaging
Extended Practice Submission
We needed to make sure that what we were going to be designing had not been done before, therefore some contextual research into bottle design and packaging was undertaken. A quick research trip to Harvey Nichols was also planned in order to get an idea of what Sloe Gin is available in stores where the gin’s target audience shops and also where the gin would ideally be stocked. After the trip we had concluded that there was in fact a gap in the market for a uni-sex luxury and sophisticated Sloe Gin which had an alcohol of 30%.

3 - Wrap Packaging
After having contemplated designing a box for the bottle we both agreed to design a wrap for the bottle as the form of packaging instead. The decision to do a wrap came about after considering the way in which Sloe gin is made and further emphasises how during the process of making sloe gin that it must be preserved and be kept in a cool and dark place.
4 - Initial Designs
We had both started designing the logo with some rough sketches. I had attempted to create a custom typeface tracing over existing typefaces. Initially we had agreed to try and combine the numbers in with the letters but this was not as effective as we had anticipated.

5 - Logo Development
Extended Practice Submission
Moving on from the designs we had done on paper, we had started to develop a stronger looking logo with 2 variants. It was during this stage that we had started to implement 30 degree angles to the logos which further pushes the name and concept.

Concept
The concept behind Thirty is derived from the alcohol percentage which the Sloe gin has 30%. 30% was chosen as it would be the highest alcohol percentage Sloe Gin which would be commercially sold. The use of 30% is further emphasised through the angles in the logos, website and promotional images. In addition to this, it ties in with Thirty’s target audience age bracket (30 Years +).

6 - Final Solutions
The final logo solutions are refined versions of the previous logo developments. The use of a secondary font, Futura in the logos gave it that finished and refined look. The use of 2 variants of the logo enables it to be applied as effectively as possible.

7 - Final Deliverables
The final deliverables for this brief were, the logo and packaging of the sloe gin, social media promotional images for Instagram a website and a bus advert. We thought that for the target audience these were suitable, and given where the Gin is made and sold these forms of advertisements were best.
