Tempe Rio Salado Rotary Club Minutes for September 27, 2012     

President Ben opened the meeting at 6:57 AM (so he could fine Corey for being late). Attendees: Ben, Dona, Bobbi, Jack, Kent, Norma, Don, Geoff, Corey, Larry, and Pat. PDG Don provided the invocation. Bobbi led us in the Pledge. Pat led us in the Four Way Test (and, for the very first time, not only did he recite all of the words correctly, but the words were even in the right sequence.)

1) PDG Don submitted a letter that was allegedly written about Ben. After hearing Don read the entire letter, our conclusion is that it is an obvious fake. All of the positive comments about Ben were grossly inflated and all of the negative comments were grossly understated. (Pretty funny!) 2) Larry briefed us on last week’s joint TRS/CXR meeting. Everything went well, a new member was inducted, and everyone enjoyed themselves. 3) We discussed an invitation from Tempe South for us to send our new members through their Rotary training program. While appreciating the offer and acknowledging the value of their training program, it was felt that primary training of our members should occur within TRS/CXR. It was decided to reactivate our own training program, which is fully developed and ready to go. Dona offered her house to host trainings. 4) Ben sat on Larry’s lap and sang Happy Birthday to him. Larry should be out of the hospital by Wednesday. (Ouch!) Here is a link to the video: http://youtu.be/L5IuFmvd028 5) We reviewed the status of our proposed international service projects. Larry said that he, Pat, Michael, and Beth Anne will meet on Skype to develop a plan for a Friendship Exchange with Chile. We discussed helping Shree in Nepal with a grant. Pat suggested we might be able to develop a teaching program in Nepal via Skype. Shree says they are looking for English teachers. 6) We discussed the status of our quarterly Military Breakfasts. We didn’t hold one in July because we had to relocate our meeting place. We talked about doing a breakfast for the Marines in November as a “thank you” for their Toys for Tots program. We also considered possibly a breakfast for Wounded Warriors. It was suggested that we invite a guests from other Rotary Clubs so that they can learn how to produce military appreciation programs like this in their own clubs. 7) We still have 10 tickets to sell for the October 12th Magic Show. See Pat for information. We need to sell out! 8) Arizona Cardinals - Larry reported that we sent 20 COPS volunteers and their guests to the Cardinals football game on Sunday. He was overwhelmed by the response. In sixty minutes, 40 volunteers called for tickets. Previously, we sent a group of children from the North Tempe Boys and Girls Club. Here is a link to a great story and video about that trip. http://camelbackrotary.org/2012/09/cxr-serving-tempe-boys-girls-clubs-at-an-arizona-cardsgame/#.UGXVESmkFgc.facebook 9) Meeting adjourned at 8:10 AM.
