Tempe Rio Salado Meeting Minutes May 14, 2015 ATTENDANCE Members: Larry Horton, Ben Eubank, Patrick de Haan, Corey Bruggeman, Kent Hendricks, Geoff Pashkowski, Karen Ingersoll. Linda Ingersoll, Sibil Ingersoll, and Diana Ingersoll. 7:00 AM: Meeting called to order by President Larry. Invocation: Ben Eubank Pledge of Allegiance: Corey Bruggeman Four-way Test: The incredible, multi-tasking Geoff Pashkowski. Geoff managed to get all four correct as he was circulating the room and shaking hands with everyone. Our President-elect in action!
DISCUSSION 1. Geoff saw Marty Baird while at the airport over the weekend. Said he still looks the same! 2. District conference is this weekend. A unanimous decision was made that, in lieu of attendance from our club, the allocated funds would be (and have been) sent toward relief efforts in Nepal. 3. We will be sponsoring one young person for RYLA after all… $350.00. 4. Strong possibility that Larry will become the next Director of RYLA, and we all think that’s pretty fabulous! We discussed at some length the pros and cons of assuming such an important position. RYLA is an excellent program – one of the jewels in Rotary. While the position might be demanding, it presents the opportunity to take RYLA to the next level. That is an awesome challenge, especially for someone who is as passionate about RYLA as Larry is. If he does get the opportunity, the Club will help provide whatever support he needs. 5. The youth exchange program was brought up, and it turns out that Ben’s first introduction to Rotary was through that program. He went to South Africa during apartheid. Wow. He shared a few stories, and said it was a lifechanging experience. Thanks for sharing, Ben. That was very insightful. 6. The domain name for our website is up for renewal.. TempeRioSalado.org. All were in favor of paying the $17.99 to renew. (Now we just need to get the website updated and running!) 7. Vasu Vaidyanathan from India will be our speaker next week. He is one of our Rotary Facebook friends. He is here in Tempe for his son’s graduation from ASU. 8. Our Sister Club in Australia received our banner and posted photos on Facebook. We now have five Sister Clubs! Two in Western Australia (Rotary Club of Bentley Curtain and Rotary Club of Southern Districts), Italy (Rotary Club of Roma Sud Est), Pakistan (Rotary Club of Islamabad), and India. This year, we might be getting three more - One in Eastern Australia (where Larry did his GSE) and two in Bangladesh (where Stephanie and Holly did their GSE). Go ahead and say it, we rock! 9. We discussed creating a club tradition that all visitors to our meetings will be asked to pose for an individual and group picture wearing a Santa Claus Jacket and hat. They would also receive a certificate making them an honorary Santa Claus. 10. Next week is Red Nose Day (21st)… we will be donning our Red noses in support. 11. All members of our club(s) will be receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award… details to be ironed out next week. That’s a pretty big deal folks!
Kent happy that his family members are all safe after the tornados.
Larry had a good weekend… lots of fun.
Ben and Geoff matched Larry’s contribution to Happy $$.
Corey had a good week. (He was on the clock this time… but after all was said, it was decided that we would report he had a good week.) lol
Karen had a very nice Mother’s Day, and celebration of her grandson’s 3rd Birthday!
Pat happy that Bobbi got hearing-aids… and very cool ones at that!
Have a great week everyone! Red Nose Day is a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty by simply having fun and making people laugh. The inaugural Red Nose Day will be held in the US on May 21st, 2015. People across the country will come together to have fun and raise funds and awareness. The day's events will culminate in a three-hour entertainment TV special on NBC featuring the country's favorite comedians, musicians and Hollywood stars—it's a show not to be missed! Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign thrown by the nonprofit organization Comic Relief. In the UK, Red Nose Day has been going for 30 years and is an inspiring cultural phenomenon that unites people from all walks of life in the interest of saving and changing lives across the globe. Since the first Red Nose Day, Comic Relief has raised over $1.5 billion to help people in need around the world. All of the grant money distributed by the Red Nose Day Fund will be given to a variety of nonprofit organizations that transform children’s lives. The great news is that half the money distributed will be spent right here in the US at projects close to home. The other half will be spent in some of the poorest communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. All of the grant money will be used in projects to keep children and young people safe, educated or healthy.
SGT Silvia Herrera. After today’s meeting, Pat drove over to Charles Schwab on Lincoln Drive to visit with Silvia Herrera. Silvia just went back to work from maternity leave. She looks great and is very happy. Little Eva is adorable.
A high point of every meeting is waiting patiently to see what Ben will spill this week. He never disappoints us!
