‘Love is in the air… we’re warm in the winter, sunny on the inside, love is in the air’ – Glass Candy I really believe that music can have healing properties. It can be motivating, inspiring (see what Datsun Tran says about this), energising and it can make us happy when we’re stuck inside on a rainy day. The Attitude team were listening to all sorts of music as we put together this whopping issue for winter and we hope you can see the inspirations inside. We’ve been busily working on our event – A Night of Fashion AT THE ART GALLERY, check out page 20 for all the info. We feature shoots with April Tiplady and see some fresh faces in the Class of 2013. We also have wine and coffee features to get you out of the house and exploring the best that South australia has to offer. Let Attitude Magazine keep you warm this winter. SELENA XX

Pip & Pop’s winter loves:

Pip & Pop’s tiny wonderlands

R

omance Was Born’s psychedelic wonderland collection ‘Mushroom Magic’ was one of the standout shows at the recent Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week, with the duo’s signature overthe-top theatricality celebrated in enchanted and shimmering excess.

at the same time,” says Tanya.“Because it was Luke and Anna, I trusted that they would do something amazing with my work. Everything I had seen of their work before was incredible, so even though I didn’t know what would come from the collaboration I knew it would be interesting.

The collection, a collaboration with artist Pip & Pop, extended from fabric prints, jewellery and headwear right onto the floor of the catwalk in an elaborate, candy-coloured installation that thrilled audiences.

“They are just brimming with crazy ideas,” she says of the duo. “They are also the loveliest people I’ve worked with, which made the whole project a total joy.”

Pip & Pop is the nom de plume of artist Tanya Schultz from Fremantle. Tanya is a celebrated artist in her own right, having exhibited in Germany, UK, Japan and across Australia including a recent project with Adelaide’s Come Out Festival. She’d never met Romance Was Born’s Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales before being asked to collaborate, and part of the process meant handing over her art to be reimagined into prints and designs. “It was really exciting and a little bit scary

Pip & Pop’s tiny wonderlands are inspired by the idea of imaginary paradises where lands are made from food – think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory or the ideas of Big Rock Candy Mountain. The Romance Was Born work took her further into the realms of magic and psychedelia, with a generous nod to Alice In Wonderland – mushrooms, rainbows, flowers, smoking caterpillars and smiling cats were all cornerstones of the work. The miniature world created for the runway used over half a ton of coloured sugar along with every childhood craft supply imaginable – glitter, pipe cleaners, | 1 0 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

plastic flowers, mini mushrooms, pompoms and more. The result was a pastel dreamland of intricate pattern and magical wonder, a perfect backdrop for the frilled, puffy, technicolor collection. The installation took six days to create with a band of helpers, which was incredibly fast for work that can usually take between two and six weeks. “The works really just grow organically,” she says. “One thing leads to another, then another. This is the fun part for me, the bit I really love. There are no plans, except for research into particular stories or myths as a reference point.” “It was fascinating to be a part of the runway show production. The runway show for Romance involved a whole universe of people. Backstage before the show was a frenetic whirlwind of colour and craziness. It was amazing and exhilarating,” she says. pipandpop.com.au

MS MR Music isn’t the only thing that inspires Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow, the duo behind dark synth-pop newcomers, MS MR. Just as their album Secondhand Rapture, was set to drop, the university acquaintances turned partners-in-crime chatted with Attitude about their visual inspirations. B y L achlan A i r d

For those who have seen MS MR’s film clips for Hurricane and Fantasy would understand the ingenuity and creativity that goes into the videos. Everything from cheerleaders vomiting glitter, monster hands, blue skin, green slime and some fancy wig work are just some of the more memorable moments from these projects. So, who's responsible for the creative control behind such batshit concepts? They are, of course. “We have absolute control over pretty much everything,” Hershenow confirms. “We’re extremely fortunate to be in a band in this position in this stage of our career and to maintain the control that we have. We’ve been really aggressive about it from the very beginning. There’s no visual or musical idea that doesn’t come directly from us.” For the music videos, they have enlisted emerging directors to help bring their vision to fruition, but they emphasise that these are collaboration and not totalitarian enterprises.

1.

“It’s really awesome for us because we think we have a very strong visual idea of what we’re tied to and how we want to present the videos,” Paplinger continues. “Unfortunately, Max and I aren’t film majors, so for us it’s really fun to collaborate and bring our ideas to the table and also see how other people relate to the music. There’s something meaningful for collaborating and not dictating too much.” Vision isn’t something that blue-haired Plapinger seems to lack. While the Jeremy Scott X Adidas Originals face swimsuit appearance in the Hurricane video might evidence a strong tie to the fashion industry, they reveal this isn’t an industry they consider themselves to have broken. “I’ve always really admired and loved fashion but we haven’t really extended

BFFs with Bauhaus

into that world yet,” confides Plapinger. “Both of us are personally really drawn to high-street brands and vintage clothes. By using the basic tools you’re able to curate and find things that are specific to you. We take a lot of pride in the way that we present ourselves. It’s a really fun extension of our personality. We have very specific and outlandish styles. “We love clothes, so in that way we definitely love fashion, but it’s not a world we’ve started exploring yet. We’re definitely open to it and would like to see how we’d fit. “It was fun to include that swimsuit. We were hoping to hear from Jeremy Scott about it, but we’re still waiting!”Plapinger laughs. James says the multi-disciplinary collective pooled their talents to create an innovative venue available for hire, as well as collaborating with locals on new projects.

Tenth and Gibson Adelaide’s newest arts venue, Tenth and Gibson provides a unique commercial space for creative minds to gather, work and be inspired. B y L uc y A hern

N

amed for its prime location in the blossoming suburb of Bowden, Tenth and Gibson is the perfect fit for the area which is quickly becoming Adelaide’s go-to for innovative food, art and fashion.

The studio is the brainchild of a number of Adelaide professionals, combining the impressive skill set of photographers Sven Kovac, Alistair Nicholls and James Hartley, architect and artist Chuck Whittington, picture framer Pop Allen and videographer Luc Hansen to form a very well-rounded crew.

While Tenth and Gibson is primarily a photography studio, the adaptable space is also available to hire for video work and events, from film premieres to art exhibitions or fashion shows. The collective are excited to have the creative community coming in and using the space, but James says it is the less tangible aspects that they hope will make people want to return.

Studio manager James Hartley says Tenth and Gibson was born out of a need for a “truly versatile” work space in Adelaide, and believes the hardworking and DIY ethos of the founders shines through.

“Our primary mission, from a design point of view, was to appeal to a more humanistic agenda; one that prioritises a rich, enjoyable experience for the user without sacrificing functionality.”

The lads have put their “blood, sweat and tears” into the venue, transforming the neglected warehouse into a state-of-theart photography studio, with much of the building materials salvaged from houses across Adelaide.

“At the end of the day, a building is just an empty shell – the people who use it are what gives it life.”

WILLOW

S c a n l a n & The o d o re

C a rl a Z a m p a t t i

Since founding the label in 2003, Creative Director Kit Willow has mastered the art of contrast, combining flawless tailoring and aspects of corsetry with flowing silks and flattering drapery (even studying the skill in Paris). A favourite of stars from Florence Welch to Miranda Kerr, WILLOW is renowned for effortlessly sophisticated, top quality garments for the woman who knows what she wants.

Since 1987, this Australian label has been dedicated to creating timeless, clean and devastatingly elegant garments, destined to become wardrobe staples. Fusing exquisite fabrics, subtle structure and bursts of gemstone colours in their much-coveted collections, the label caters for the independent woman – striking, intelligent and bold, yet aware of her femininity.

Australian fashion icon Carla Zampatti created her first small collection in 1965, and since then has been synonymous with style, originality and class – and is never afraid to take a risk. Classic, ladylike designs are paired with flashes of colour and print, intricate lace and soft leathers in her collections, creating a diverse range of garments for the discerning woman.

B i a n c a Spe n d er

Akira

a l i c e M c CA L L

Fashion design runs in the family. With Carla Zampatti for a mother, it’s no surprise to see her classic style and an independent spirit influence Bianca Spender's designs. But Spender brings her own modern and avant-garde touch, with superbly fluid lines and bright digital prints balancing out spot-on structure and bold blacks. Her collections present a new slant on contemporary design – utterly beautiful and intelligently crafted.

Designer Akira Isogawa famously wears only black – probably because he infuses such vivacious colour into his collections. Born in Kyoto, Japan, he moved to Australia in 1986 to study fashion at the Sydney Institute of Technology, and launched his eponymous line in 1998. Since then, Akira has become one of the country’s most lauded (and awarded) designers, famous for his delicately handmade garments, all inspired by contemporary Japanese design. | 2 1 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

Since launching in 2004, Alice McCall has become one of Australia’s go-to labels for quirky, fun and charming pieces that still have wardrobe staying power. McCall began her career as a stylist, working with style queens such as Beyonce, as well as for magazines including i-D and Dazed and Confused, and her international influence now extends to the fashion world.

A NIGHT OF FASHION

S u zy O ’ R o u r k e M i ll i n ery Inspired by everything from nature to baroque and art deco, Suzy O’Rourke began her label in 2003 to focus on designing detailed and luxurious pieces while incorporating a creative sculptural element to the unique millinery. Crafting couture, bridal and ready-towear collections, her pieces are bold, ornate and often playful, with her latest range incorporating delicate netting and leopard print.

The Art Gallery of South Australia has recently acquired some remarkable examples of Andy Warhol’s Polaroid photography. Photographs, as the source material for his paintings and at other times as images in their own right, were essential to Warhol’s practice. He bought a Polaroid Big Shot camera around 1970 and always travelled with at least two. Two of the recently acquired photographs, Liza Minnelli and Andy and Hitchcock, will be on display at the Art Gallery for the first time for A Night of Fashion. General Idea SS 2013

While it’s tempting to spend winter languishing in a onesie with a DVD box set at hand, at some point you’re going to need to leave the house. When that happens, we recommend you go for pieces built to last: a sturdy denim jacket, the classic flannelette shirt, a waterproof bomber. Anna Mazzone My car is... 1972 Volkswagon Fastback But I call it... Fred It's now… Starting to struggle. But I first got it… When I was a naive 20-year-old, who wore leotards, drank Herbie Hancocks and didn’t have a care in the world. The story behind my car is… That it belonged to an old man for about 30 years, who spent a lot of time and money looking after it. But the man eventually went crazy and he had to sell it back to the mechanic. Since then, the car was owned by a young English couple for about a year, until they wanted to sell it because of their growing family. I’m now the owner of the car and the old man’s blanket in the back seat. But the best story I have with the car is… Squeezing five people into the back, one in the boot and watching the back seat collapse.

My car is different to every other car because… You have to open the petrol cap with a spanner. My favourite thing about my car is… The horn. It sounds like Road Runner and occasionally doesn’t work, which always keeps me on my toes! But I really hate it when… My dad sends me YouTube clips of old cars smashing into new cars to prove how dangerous mine is. My car has let me down by… Testing my patience and heat threshold every summer. And one time in my car I found… A newspaper from 1979. Amongst some vintage fries. The furthest my car has been is… McLaren Vale. And half way back. But one day I hope to take it to… San Francisco to really test those brakes. | 3 4 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

Tony and Vito Mitolo Mach 1 Mustang It’s now... 45 But we first got it... Around seven years ago.

The story behind our car is… The Mustang was a full rebuild on a rotisserie and took five years to complete. It won the Australian Concours d’Elegance last year which was a very proud moment for all of us. Dad picked both of his children up from the hospital when we were born in it, drove us first day of school in it and used it for our school formals. My sister is getting married next year and we are using both the Mustang and our other car, a GT, as the wedding cars. But I really hate it when it… Place anything on the console of the car. Don’t comb your hair (doesn’t really apply to me), smoke or put your feet up.

My car has let me down by… Never. It’s a classic Ford. And one time in my car I found… My dignity. The furthest my car has been is… Probably Melbourne. We keep it local. But one day I hope to take it to… Italy and cruise it around the windy mountain roads surrounding Sulmona. Roadtrip Mixtape 1. Steve Earle – Copperhead Road 2. Van Morrison – Wavelength 3. “I pretty much don’t stop painting until I get to starving point”

Datsun Tran

D

atsun Tran has changed his style, tone and colour palette over the last 10 years, but one thing that has remained the same is the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album Raising Sand that has stayed on his playlist. Much like the album, the unexpected harmony and transformation between styles is evident in each of Datsun’s collections. From an apocalyptic landscape series, to a trashy celebrity pop-art collection, his works are varied but have a flawless consistency and contemporary beauty. The talented 33-year-old Melbourneborn artist definitely has his priorities straight, spending most of his days in front of the canvas, until realising he might need something to eat. Datsun uses oils, acrylics, spray-paint and basically “anything to get the story across,” he says. Each collection of his work does in fact tell a story, shown quite literally in his latest collection of images painted onto old hardcover books. “I started using books because I thought they carried a lot of weight in symbolism. They

symbolise things like potential knowledge, wisdom or adventure, and when you put an image on that and it tells a story in a new way.” The seamless detail and sharp borders on the hardcover paintings create a figurative window into the story of the book, which gives you an incredible urge to pick it up and find out what’s inside. Art wasn’t always Datsun’s plan for a career. He fell into creative advertising, with the idea that he couldn’t make a living out of painting. Working as an art director, Datsun came to realise that it would never be creative enough for him and so he built up the courage to take the big leap. Datsun first came to Adelaide 10 years ago to work on the animation of a film titled I Could Be Me with noted Australian artist David Bromley. He worked full-time for three years, created 14,000 drawings, to produce 15 minutes of animation. And after this apparently encouraging experience, he decided to paint. Animals and birds are a constant theme that Datsun has been drawn to since he began.“There’s an honesty about them. If I use people in my paintings I have to photograph them, and people always know when they’re being photographed. They’re never that honest, they’re always posing. So with animals I find that I can use my own language to tell the story I want to tell.” | 3 8 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

In 2010 Datsun’s spray-painted bird collection first took flight overseas and exhibited in Chicago, on the same walls as modern art rockstars Picasso, Lichtenstein and Warhol. His artwork has since traveled to more cities than he’s been able to visit, with exhibitions around Australia, the USA, Canada and London. In probably his most personal series, Datsun embraces his love of comic-book art to create a sequence of melodramatic landscapes, featuring isolated travelers, wrecked cars and an atmosphere of destruction. He explains that he has always been obsessed with survivalists, stemming from the journey his parents took when leaving Vietnam in the late 70s. “I’ve always had a thing to ‘be prepared’, and that came through in my art. But I’ve got that out of my system now.” It’s hard to believe that with such amazing work, there isn’t a method behind his madness. “Basically I don’t have a system. Usually if I’m painting something I’ll try to work out why I’m painting it at that moment, and then I’ll think of the reason why. I think there’s always a reason behind an artist’s decision, so the story or idea usually comes from further thought.” You’re likely to see Datsun or his work around the traps of Adelaide. Why not say hello… just no car jokes.

ArtistS AT THE MILL Branko Jaric Fascination Street WHAT: Niche architecture FAVOURITE PROJECT: The Tunnels. We designed and built the structure, and because it was such a unique place with restrictions in terms of space, time and budget, the combination of those constraints made us really distil that idea and come up with something that we’re very happy with. CURRENT PROJECT: Splash approached us for Picnic Lane, so we’re doing that. There were some things we couldn’t do though, so we gave them James Worth’s number. FAVOURITE MATERIAL: Absolutely not milk crates. Anything that does a dual purpose; I like the composites. Simple objects and simple materials, combining their strengths into one piece.

Anny Duff Production Designer and Founder B GOODS LABEL. WHAT: Sustainable and ethical fashion. FAVOURITE MATERIAL: 100% organic hemp linen. A miracle material. Favourite thing about The Mill: Being part of a community, surrounded by creativity. And communal winter soups!

Alex Bishop-Thorpe & Aurelia Carbone The Analogue Laboratory WHAT: Photographic Darkroom Facility Favourite past project: In 2012 we hosted seven workshops with more than 30 South Australians on analogue photographic techniques ranging from Pinhole photography, Holgas and Silver Gelatin printing to Tintypes, Ambrotypes, Dry Glass Plate photography and Albumen prints. It blew our minds a little bit and prompted us to move and expand. Philosophy: We’re here to keep the alchemy alive. Biggest challenge so far: Building the current iteration of The Lab would have to be the most exciting and exhausting part of its history so far. Having moved into The Mill complex in March 2013 with three truck loads of equipment, we set aside six weeks of construction between three of us and a whirlwind Pozible campaign which has resulted in a two-room darkroom facility equipped with six enlargers and some of the most advanced equipment in the country, gathered together over the course of the last seven years.

The Mill:

Artists On Angas Most artists dream about a perfect workspace. One that’s accessible and open, with natural light; full of friendly faces and creative minds. Erin Fowler and Amber Cronin will be the first to admit that The Mill isn’t perfect yet, but for the 47 or so residents, it’s pretty damn close.

ronin has a background working with Fourwords and does the administration for The Mill; Fowler is a dancer who collaborates with people from other creative disciplines. Both noticed a lack of workable room and permanency for Adelaide artists. Short-term leases are no good for people who need months to develop a project, and even longer-term leases came with strings attached. “We looked at a lot of buildings that had a six-month redevelopment clause,” Fowler says.“But Amber had done work with | 5 4 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

Fourwords where they were on short leases and for what we wanted to do, we had to be able to offer artists security. Sometimes we felt like we were being a bit too picky, but there are practicalities behind choosing a workable dance space and so on.” Renew Adelaide stepped up to give the pair some help, and 18 months of househunting ensued. “Renew have been a big help in an advisory sense, but we’re not a Renew property,” Cronin explains.“We have a bit more security than that: we’re not in an

Alexandra Knox WHAT: Choreography, dance NEXT PROJECT: In August of 2013 Tanz Atelier Wien in Austria is going to host an annual International ChoreoLab (ICLA) in the magnificent art and nature sanctuary of St. Margarethen im Burgenland. This is an incredible opportunity for choreographers/ artists to participate in workshops with some exciting and incredible international artists from across the globe. empty building and we’re not filling time, which is what Renew does.” Finally, they found their home at 154 Angas Street, returning to it eight months after their first inspection. They signed the five-year lease and turned their efforts to destruction. “There was a lot of knocking down and tearing up in the first few days, which was really fun,” Cronin says, then pauses. “But then we realised we had to do something to the place we’d torn up and knocked down.” The first few weeks at Angas Street were a mess of anxieties and self-doubt. Fowler explains,“We’d spent 18 months telling people, ‘Artists need space! Artists need space!’ and then it was like, ‘Do they?’” Cronin continues, “We signed the lease and had our first week in here, and we were sitting in this awful, carpeted, dustfilled space and we were going, ‘Fuck … Do people need space?’” They now have a full house and a waiting list that is growing daily, but there are still niggling fears attached to the responsibility of the place.

“Risks are different when you’re doing creative projects,” Fowler says.“It’s personal risk. But we’re now responsible for the people in the space, and that’s daunting.” Cronin agrees, citing insurance, fire safety and other compliances as a source of worry. “I keep having nightmares about the stairs,” Fowler laughs. “They scare me.” But for all their concerns, The Mill has shaped up beautifully. The selected artists were slightly curated, to ensure there was a “good cross-section” of people from different fields and from different stages in their career. Fowler, a cross-disciplinary creative herself, has really enjoyed seeing friendships form naturally among the residents. The future looks bright for The Mill, and the waiting list is ripe with new opportunities and keen faces.“There are so many people still coming to us, even though we’re full, saying, ‘I just want to work outside of my empty bedroom’,” Fowler says. With friendly chatter filtering through the place and sunlight streaming into the gallery-style foyer, it’s easy to see why.

WHAT: Ecological fashion (organic cotton & bamboo basics for men and women) CURRENT PROJECT: Vege Threads is my sole project. I started the company in late 2012 and will launch the first collection on Fri May 31 at The Mill. Vege Threads is about creating affordable eco-ethical basics. We donate a percentage of our profits to a foundation in North Bali. Philosophy: Help create a change in fashion by choosing eco-ethical clothing. BIGGEST CHALLENGE SO FAR: Sustainably and ethically starting a company from scratch, and sourcing natural and organic materials.

James Worth Green Star Design Studio WHAT: Landscape architect CURRENT PROJECT: Building a cart for Picnic Lane. Curating a sculptural exhibition for SALA in the Botanic Gardens. PHILOSOPHY: Put Lego in the curriculum all the way to Year 12. Clean, minimalist, fun environmental design. FAVOURITE MATERIAL: Timber, it’s nice and resonates. And metal and plants. FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE MILL: I came in here on my lonesome, so it’s a nice change to be in this environment after working from home. In the past, social interaction was through sub-contractors and suppliers, but in here it’s different with the collective attitude, social environment and inter-disciplinary work.

April April Tiplady is a natural model: you can see that immediately from her graceful limbs, curiously heart-shaped face and small, perfect mouth. She has that chameleonic quality that’s necessary of the profession, at one moment looking like Twiggy circa 1967 for L’Officiel Singapore, then transforming into an androgynous cyberpunk for Zambesi at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Tiplady BY NADIA BAILEY

Her swift rise from schoolgirl to cover girl reads like a fairytale – all serendipitous meetings and oddly fortunate events. For her 14th birthday, April’s grandmother bought her a grooming course at local agency Finesse Models, to help her granddaughter develop confidence. There, she caught the eye of Finesse Models’ director Brigette Mitchell, who happened to show some photos of April to David Cunningham of IMG Models two years later at a dinner party. Cunningham was so

taken with April that he organised to have her flown to Sydney the next day for some test shots in Sydney – where she was signed to IMG on the spot. From there, it’s been a whirlwind: walking for Junya Wanatabe in Paris, as well as appearing alongside Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Dempsey Stewart in GQ. Meanwhile, April name-drops Claire Inc as her favourite designer/collective. You can take the girl out of Adelaide…

ituated in the laneway at the back of the two-level bar, Udaberri’s new undercover beer garden is a cosy option for mild winter nights. With a stunning geometric mural by artist Vans The Omega, succulent wall, heaters and new bar area, it’s a perfect place to enjoy a craft beer or a top Spanish drop. And forget March – at Udaberri festival season is in August to coincide with the Basque Semana Grande (big week), San Sebastian’s annual nonstop party celebrating food, wine, music and fireworks. To mark it, Udaberri will transfer a slice of the action to Leigh Street and will feature wine, sherry and pintxo specials along with plenty of festivity and merriment – albeit a few less pyrotechnics.

Rare: Grill this steak as hot as possible for a short period of time. For a one-inch steak, it’ll probably need about one to two minutes per side.

Med-Rare: This steak needs to grill as hot as possible for about 2 to 3 minutes per side.

Medium: Grill this steak on a medium high heat for about 5 to 6 minutes per side. You’re looking for a thick pinkish band in the middle, and warm brown charring on the sides.

Risotto Povero (Poor Man’s Risotto)

Sandy Cenin from cosy Prospect café Minestra shares an old family recipe that is simpler than a traditional risotto, but every bit as comforting. Serves 4 • 1½ cups Arborio rice • 2 brown onions, finely sliced • 3 cups finely chopped leafy greens spinach, silver beet or chard. Include some of the stem • 4 tablespoons olive oil • 12-15 roughly chopped sage leaves • 3/4 cup shaved parmesan • Salt and pepper to taste 1. Heat oil in a heavy based pan. Fry onions and sage for two minutes, then turn down to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and caramelised – about 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile cook rice in salted boiling water for 10 minutes. Add the chopped greens and boil for a further two minutes. Strain. 3. In a lightly greased ovenproof casserole dish, layer 1/3 of the rice and greens and 1/3 of the onion. Top with 1/3 of the parmesan and some cracked pepper. Repeat with remaining ingredients. 4. Bake uncovered in a preheated 180°C oven for 10-15 minutes. To serve, use a large spoon or spatula and serve ‘slices’ sideways into bowls to reveal the layers. Top with a drizzle of olive oil and cracked pepper! Minestra 173 Churchill Road, Prospect facebook.com/minestra.food

arr...Go Vegan with Argo B y A N N A M A ZZO N E P h o t o grapher : A N D R E C A S T E L L U C C I

Be a clean and green energising being with the team at Argo. You've joined the juice revolution and now it's time to go vegan. Anna Mazzone previews the new vegan menu at Argo.

M

any years ago I decided I’d had enough of the flesh-eating lifestyle and decided to go vegan. I ate peanut butter sandwiches every day for lunch and to no surprise ended up with some minor health problems. Come to think of it, I’m not even sure if peanut butter is a vegan product, but the most important thing I learnt was that if you want to go vegan, you have to do it right. There are many benefits to a vegan diet if you commit and do it properly. Vegans tend to have lower cholesterol because their diets are low in saturated fats – the bad fats which are usually found in meats. Vegan diets are usually also high in fibre, which is essential for a healthy functioning body, and reduces your risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer. High magnesium levels also go hand-in-hand with a vegan diet, which are absorbed through nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables. Magnesium is also important for your mental health, concentration and energy levels.

Here are a few pointers from us at Attitude on how to stay a happy, balanced and healthy vegan.

TRY: Pita pockets

Don’t just cut the beef, replace it! It’s all well and good to remove all meats and fish from your diet, but it’s important to make sure that you are replacing it

with something that can still provide you with enough protein (perhaps not peanut butter). Some great sources of protein that Argo recommends are tofu, soy beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts and seeds.Veggie burgers and meat substitutes are also great sources of protein, and can really satisfy your ‘not dog’ cravings. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for your heart and mental health, and without fish in your diet you need to get your dose of omega-3 through flaxseed, walnuts, linseed and canola oil. Make sure you get in three serves of protein a day and mix it up for some veganised variety.

But I always drink plenty of... Malk? TRY: Vegetable noodle salad

Don’t make it an excuse to eat like a bird People decide to go vegan for many different reasons, but I’m sure there are a few followers out there who just want to look as good as Alicia Silverstone in a lettuce bikini. If you’re committing to a vegan lifestyle, it’s important to still keep a balanced diet of protein, calcium, fruit, vegetables, good

fats and grains. There are plenty of breads and grains that double up as both a fibre and protein source, like quinoa, freekah, barley and brown rice which all feature on Argo's new menu. The key is to stay balanced, eat a variety of colours and to make each meal interesting. This way you’re getting all of the antioxidants and nutrients that your body needs, while still keeping vibrant and vegan!

Finding the right milk substitute that you like is important to keep up your calcium intake. Calcium is an essential daily requirement for strong bones and teeth. There’s a variety of faux milks to choose from, such as soy, almond, rice and even cashew milk. Argo offers almond milk and organic single origin coffee, and soon will be roasting their own coffee here in Adelaide. You can also find some interesting tasting vegan yoghurts and cheeses, like the hilariously witty Notzarella! Some other ways to sneak calcium into your diet is by eating almonds, tahini, tofu and dark green vegetables.

Paxton The people of Paxton favour a ‘why not’ attitude –thinking outside the square to produce quality, interesting wines to savour as you soak in the property’s history.

P

axton uses traditional, back-tobasics techniques to produce award-winning and unique wines for any palette, and let the consumer be the judge. Wine tastings take place inside the historic property, but you can soak up the rays on the deck with a personalised platter, or grab a bottle and head out for a picnic on their expansive historic grounds. Certified biodynamic – they produce their own all-natural fertilizers – Paxton’s believe the quality of the land and quality of the wine go hand in hand, and keep their vineyards healthy, sustainable, and safe for their kids to play in.

Michael Paxton

The Winemaker

“It comes from the gut and the heart”

“I’m a frustrated artist,” says senior winemaker and viticulture manager Michael Paxton. “Making wine is a way of expressing myself.” With a degree in winemaking and time working in wineries from Argentina to America, Michael believes that the industry is a way of life; winemaking is something he lives and breathes, rather than just a job. “It comes from the gut and the heart,” says Michael. With a progressive mindset is inherited from his father (who planted the first vines in 1979), who was unafraid of challenging conventions, Michael does not gauge his success on medals. Although accolades are pleasing (and Paxton’s have plenty) the team aim to producing interesting wine that pushes peoples buttons. Michael says he’s not afraid to take a risk to achieve this, implementing a biodynamic system and experimenting with new varieties. | 7 9 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne A d vert i s i ng feature |

The Winemaker Senior winemaker Paul Smith grew up with wine on the dinner table, and believes it should be consumed in good company to celebrate life. His familiarity and knowledge is evident in the quality of wines that continue to be produced. The day-to-day thrill is important, says Paul, and nothing is more satisfying than seeing others enjoying what you have produced. Despite plans to become a vet, a dash of fate sent Paul in the direction of the vines, and he’s never looked back. “Winemaking becomes your life,” he says. “And we wouldn’t want it any other way.”

The Winemaker Chief Winemaker Chester d’Arenberg Osborn was born into the business – the fourth generation to continue the legacy – working in the vineyards every holiday while growing up. He believes continuity and fully understanding the land are essential to producing quality wine. d’Arenberg is deadly serious about wines, he says – until it gets in the bottle. From then on Chester believes it should be about fun, hence the quirky names. When asked at age eight what sort of wine he was going to make, he answered:“A yummy one.” This passion has continued over the years; despite holding a degree in Oenology, he doesn’t call what he does ‘work’. Chester revels in the connection with nature, communication with growers and simply the art of winemaking itself.

Wine glasses The perfect wine deserves the perfect glass but which vessel suits each variety? And no, a mug is never okay.

F

irstly, go for a clear glass – it means you can best appreciate the colour of your drop, and can also aid in judging the age and variety. Hold your glass by the stem of the glass – the warmth from your hand can quickly increase the temperature of a chilled wine. Although it may sound trivial, the shape matters too. Pick a glass that is large enough to allow a good splash of wine, but can still be swirled to release aromas without spilling over.

Red

Riesling

Use one with a smaller bowl for whites, as it will help to keep it cooler as you sip. However, a chardonnay will thrive in a larger glass! For reds, a larger, wider bowl will help promote aeration, releasing the best flavours from your wine. Choose a flute or tulip-shape for sparkling wines or champagnes, as it helps to keep the bubbles intact for longer.

The FOUNDER

"Wine is one of the great luxuries of life”

Tony Parkinson, founder of Penny’s Hill, believes wine is “one of the great luxuries of life”. Previously owner of an advertising agency, Tony built Penny’s Hill from the ground up, driven by determination and a love of red wine. He takes pride in running a good business, acknowledging constant innovation is necessary to reach more consumers – but he is only becoming more focussed with age. Tony encourages wine beginners to only take wine with food, as it enhances the experience of both, and to take things slow when getting to know wine. His personal favourites are The Experiment Grenache (“a result of freedom”) and the classic Shiraz, but it is when customers “wax lyrical” about Penny’s Hill that he feels most rewarded. | 8 3 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne A d vert i s i ng feature |

The Winemaker In the industry for over 20 years, chief winemaker Scott Zrna knows his stuff. He says winemaking is the coming together of art and science, allowing him to be “creative and pedantic all at the same time”. He compares the satisfaction of assembling a unique blend to that of a chef using ingredients to produce an exciting new dish. “I also enjoy the challenge and frantic pace of vintage,” he says. “But that is just my masochistic side coming out.” Although he heartily appreciates the international recognition his wines have received, Scott says it is coming to work in McLaren Vale that has been the highlight of his career to date. “Here we have a fantastic climate, great vineyards and an all-round fabulous lifestyle based around wine, food and the beach.”

The WinemakerS

“Good times are always had with a bottle of wine in hand”

Wine purveyor Malcolm Leask says it’s “bloody good fun”producing wine from the land that he and brother Richard live and work on every day. He and winemaker Richard are proud to grow, make and sell all of the wine themselves, and enjoy having the cellar door in the village atmosphere of Willunga. The brothers trust their vineyard enviroment, as well as their gut feel, says Malcolm. Producing interesting and down-to-earth wines in small volumes – like their new 2012 Aglianico and Grenache/Mataro – they are confident their fresh approach will engage the young and experimental. But most of all, they believe Hither & Yon wines are made to be enjoyed with family, friends and food. “Good times are always had with a bottle of wine in hand,” Malcom says. “Wherever you are in the world.” | 8 5 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne A d vert i s i ng feature |

SEAFOOD & WINE A succulent seafood feast isn't quite complete without wine - but to really make it sing, add your favourite drop to the pan too!

S

eafood and wine have long been lauded as a match made in heaven. But have you ever tried wine on your lunch? Add a splash of white (Semillon Sauvignon Blanc works well) to a freshly shucked oyster, sprinkle with cracked pepper and voilà ! Add the soft, medium-bodied Sangiovese to sauces and Italian dishes for a richer flavour that won’t overpower your dish. Try cooking fresh mussels in a citrusy, clean white (such as Chardonnay) to take your dinner to another level!

Matt Koch

The Winemaker Chief winemaker Matt Koch started off brewing beer – but luckily for Rosemount, he quickly discovered wine was his real passion. “It gives you the opportunity to give your own slant on things – to show what you're about,” says Matt. With an 18 year tenure at Rosemount, Matt still relishes the challenges and opportunities each vintage brings. He loves experimenting with the winemaking process to find different flavours. He believes that by offering a variety of tastes and styles Rosemount can help consumers gain the confidence to find a favourite. “No one’s ever wrong with wine,” he says. “There’s a flavour there for everyone. Once you find it, enjoy it.”

Wine varieties So many wines, so little time! This guide will help you tell your tempranillo from your vermentino, and match your favourite drop to perfectly complement dishes to ensure you get the best of both.

Reds

Merlot

Strong in tannins, this is an unabashed variety with big, bold flavours – one for those who love an intense drop. The variety loves Aussie soils, and the full-bodied style often sings with rich berry and coffee or chocolate tones. Best served: moderate room temperature (16-19° C) Pair with: any red meat (to balance the intensity) – but especially good with quality steak and lamb. Try: Fox Creek Reserve 2010 Shiraz, $70

Sometimes described as an ‘introductory’ wine for those just beginning to experiment with reds. This softer, medium-bodied variety often has herbal or berry flavours and a notable acidity, blending well with Cab Sav or Cab Franc grapes. Best served: cool (12-14° C) Pair with: Almost anything! Italian dishes (especially tomato-based), casseroles, roasted vegetables, hearty meat dishes such as shepherd’s pie. Try: The Lane 2010 Block 8 Merlot, $39

Grenache

Tempranillo

Shiraz

Often used as a blending grape, this dark and intense grape generally produces a mediumbodied wine with earthy flavours and a good dose of tannins to add texture. Flavours of spice and cherry are common in this sophisticated red. Best served: mild room temperature (13-16° C) Pair with: chicken and duck, hearty stews, Spanish flavours. Try: Penny’s Hill 2010 TheExperiment Grenache, $30

Aperitif

Noun An alcoholic drink taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite.

A deep, rich (often referred to as Spain’s noble grape), adapts well to different climates and has taken to SA regions like the Barossa and McLaren Vale. A combination of low acid and low tannins delivers an approachable, easy-to-drink wine. Best served: moderate room temperature Pair with: duck, Spanish dishes – think paella or tapas. Try: d’Arenberg 2009 The Sticks and Stones Tempranillo, $29

Backbone

Noun The sense of structure present in a wine with sufficient acidity. See also “structure” below and note that alcohol and tannins may also be elements of structure or backbone.

Frontignac

WHITES

Riesling

This fruity white is aromatic and versatile, producing a range of varieties from light and crisp to sweeter, full-bodied and even sparkling – but regardless of style, it is heavenly sipped on a hot day. Although not often aged, it can gain beautiful rounded honey notes if left to mature. Best served: chilled Pair with: appetizers to desserts, and anything in between! Try with pork, poultry or blue cheeses for a winning combination. Try: Wirra Wirra 2012 The Lost Watch Riesling, $20

Marsanne

Wirra Wirra

Australian's take on this French native – normally quite small batches – produce a subtlely sweet wine with a rich yellow hue. Marsanne has quite a high alcohol content and fairly low acidity, resulting in an interesting finish for this varietal. Best served: cool Pair with: rich seafood such as lobster or crayfish, creamy pastas or risottos. Try: Paxton 2010 Marsanne, $20

A French grape produces a sweet, easy-to-drink wine that thrives in the South Australian climate, and is beginning to gain quite a following. After an attractive fruity beginning, wait for a clean and surprising finish. Best served: chilled Pair with: lobster and prawns, soft cheeses, fruit desserts. Try: Hither & Yon White Frontignac, $21

Fox Creek

Moscato

The sweetest of the bunch, moscato (the Italian word for ‘muscat’) is semi-sparkling with a lower alcohol content than most other wines, and is a great aperitif or with nibbles before a meal. With a fruity profile ranging from citrus to peach, enchanting floral notes often shine through to round out this palate pleaser. Best served: chilled Pair with: cheese and antipasto platters, fresh salads, desserts (think crumbles or cakes). Even try with breakfast – ingenious with eggs benedict. Try: Rosemount ‘O’, $13

Hither & Yon Wirra Wirra

Tkay

At a glimpse, emerging Adelaide rapper Tkay’s acerbic tongue may have her confused for Azealia Banks. rap skills aside, the former professional tennis player’s attitude towards the music industry is much nicer compared to her controversial Harlem prototype.

H

aving already caught the ears of tastemakers like Triple J with her dubstep-infused debut Handle My Ego, the buoyant Zimbabwean-born teen is now working a mixtape with producer Badcop that will boast a combination of trap, rap and house music. Attitude caught up with Tkay to find out more about her ‘ego’. How old are you? I’m 17 years old. What’s your background? I’m Zimbabwean. My family and I moved to Australia in 2001, where we lived in Western Australia for six years before moving to South Australia.

How would you describe your sound? Alternative rap. It’s not so much gangster, not so much party – it’s more electronic with dubstep sounds with trap music influences. I’m also trying to tap into house music. You’ve had great success with your song Handle My Ego with Badcop. What first enticed you to the dubstep genre? Basically I was just trying to be a rapper at the time. The actual song Handle My Ego I wrote for something else before I got introduced to a producer called Badcop. I liked EDM at the time, so we worked on the song together to make it a dubstep sound, which worked out better. He introduced me to dubstep and essentially said I didn’t have to focus on gangster rap, I could be something else. | 9 6 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

You’re currently working on some new songs for a mixtape. Can you tell us a bit about them? There’s going to be a lot of different songs. There’s going to be house, trap and dubstep. I’m singing on a few songs, too. Adelaide has a strong underground electronic scene. Do you have any collaborations coming up with fellow musical types? I’ve been looking at a couple of Oisima’s tracks, and I’d like to work with him. But at the moment most of my collaborations are from interstate. I’ve written a couple of songs for Ministry Of Sound and Sydney outfit YesYou, just put some vocals over their songs, so I hope they like them.

decided I’d learn guitar from my Dad and also gave them up. After that I decided that music wasn’t for me and did sport instead, but in 2011 I got sick of sport and decided to do music again. What sport did you play? Tennis. I played state tournaments in the state league. Was that difficult making the transition from a professional tennis player to an aspiring rapper? Yeah, tennis was my life for a very long time. However after a while people started to ruin it for me, so I just stopped trying and slowly began to go back to music. And I’ve never looked back. I think I’m doing something better.

"I liked all the mainstream musicians, but probably now my biggest influence is Azealia Banks".

What other female rappers would you like to party with and which ones would you like to punch to the face? I’d punch Lil’ Kim in the face, as well as Kreayshawn and that pink-haired rapper/ stripper from Grimes’ Genesis music video. I’d like to party with Azealia Banks, Angel Haze, Teyana Taylor and probably Nicki Minaj, I think she’d be pretty sick. What do you think gives you your musical edge? I think in terms of Australian music it might be because my accent doesn’t sound Australian, I sound international. Maybe also because I have a girly, street energy and that I’m pretty carefree with my attitude.

What is your fashion inspiration at the moment? Probably Rihanna, she has the coolest style. She puts all these trends together. I also like Rita Ora. She probably copies Rihanna, but she’s a bit more street. Who was your favourite musician growing up? I didn’t really have a favourite. I liked all the mainstream musicians, but probably now my biggest influence is Azealia Banks. She’s had some pretty controversial experiences lately, going rampant on Twitter and making a no-show at Future Music. What do you make of that? Yeah, I guess that’s just her business. Apart from that I’m into her vibe and mood.

You’re backstage, and Azealia Banks and Rita Ora are about to get into a catfight. What do you do? I’d probably just stand back and watch! And then put it onYouTube or something (laughs). What are you listening to at the moment? I like Jai Paul and Miguel. What cheesy artist do you secretly rate? I like Ke$ha, actually. She’s weird, but I like some phrases in her songs. In a previous interview you said your family are all musicians or into music. What was the first instrument you picked up, and when? I played piano when I was eight-years-old for about a year, but then gave up. Then I | 9 7 Att i tu d e M aga z i ne |

When you’re writing gangster rap songs like Handle My Ego where you swear occasionally, are you worried in the back of your mind about your parents hearing it? I think they get worried, yeah. They always say, ‘if you don’t have to swear, don’t swear.’ So if I’m going to swear I’m going to say something not obvious, or use metaphors so you can’t pick up on it unless you really pay attention. What’s coming up for you in the future? I have a new song with Badcop called Brontosaurus coming out soon, and then after that my mixtape should be out in July. Where would you like to be a year from now? I’d just like to be more recognised, have more songs and hopefully be signed to a record company. I’d also like to tour. Tkay’s mixtape is due out in July. soundcloud.com/tkaymaidza

he talented folk from Tooth and Nail invited us to take a peek at their studio and gallery. Housed in a historic warehouse in one of Adelaide’s inner city laneways, Tooth and Nail is home to a group of resident artists and printmakers. Here they create, exhibit and sell their art. Clever and quirky prints adorn the wall thanks to the on site print making workshop. Collections of sea shells, books, plants and old bottles add even more personality and character to the studio. With such artistic inhabitants, it’s little surprise that the space is brimming with creativity.

Tom Stevens Age: 25 Occupation: Guitar/Vocals for Kids With Teeth, Bass Guitar for Battlehounds, Videographer for Zig Zag Creative, and Online Content for Nova 919. Describe your music style: Kids With Teeth’s style is kind of directed by my lack of ability to play the guitar like a guitar player. I'm a bass player at heart and play the guitar in that way. We play high-energy rock songs and also write a lot of slower, noise driven music. Favourite place to gig? We have a blast playing Ed Castle, Rocket Bar, Rhino Room, The Metro, and Cranker. What inspires your film-making? I can’t say enough about how inspiring it is to watch other peoples’ creative work. Vimeo is a great source of inspiration; there is a lot of artistic video content

to watch. Jon Zombie is a great videographer too. He has a way of capturing energy that gets you excited about taking your camera out and about. Biggest musical influence? At the moment I'm really into Metz, Wolf Alice, Health, Splashh, Street Chant, Tiger Beams, Odd Future, and Savages. What’s next for Kids with Teeth? We've been recording some new tracks recently and they are currently being mixed. But other than that, it’s just about playing live as much as possible. Tell us about your latest project: I'm really excited to be working on something new with The Shiny Brights soon. Other than that, I'm also doing an edit of some footage that Horror My Friend shot while they were on their recent tour. Favourite hang-out in Adelaide? Anywhere that supports live, original music. Loving Rocket Rooftop and Jack Ruby right now.

Pet’s name? I don’t have a pet at the moment, but Panda, my housemate’s girlfriend’s dog comes over sometimes. I’m planning on making either a music video that features her, or a short film where my housemate narrates the dog’s thoughts. Describe your ideal night: Saturday night. Song that’s stuck in your head: The Inbreds – Any Sense Of Time.

Favourite thing about designing? I get a thrill in the challenge of designing a space that is energetic, intriguing and unique. Having the opportunity to provide a new and authentic experience for its occupants drives me in every project.

Biggest perk of your job? I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I get to hang out in the completed projects – to eat, drink, and watch how people interact and respond to the space.

McLaren Vale... stay tuned. What did you last spend money on? Pinot Noir. Last song you listened to? Nicolas Jaar – Time for Us. Pet’s name? Simba. Who inspires your fashion style? Lanvin, Celine, Victoria Beckham… the list is endless. Describe your ideal night: Eating delicious food with my friends, followed by some kind of enthusiastic song and dance. How do you unwind? A glass (bottle) of red wine on the couch usually does it. Song that’s stuck in your head: Asaf Avidan – Reckoning Song / One Day (The Wankelmut Remix).
