So the world didn’t end on December 21 last year, meaning that Rip It Up had to soldier on for 2013. This year has seen quite a plethora of acts gracing our cover – from rat bag emerging bands, seasoned veterans we’re surprised are still alive, old faves with new albums and stories to tell as well as some left-fielders you may not have recognised right away. They make up the epidermis to what has constituted Rip It Up for 2013. Beneath their colourful, shiny and (often) bearded faces is the guts of our year – the other bands, artists, performers, CDs, food, fashion, art, culture and local faces that our staff have picked apart like lab scientists, delivering the results in a form easily digested by our dear readers (that’s you guys). DJ Koze’s music always contains a wonderful sense of mischief no matter the genre he is twisting. The German producer is also a merry prankster away from music, as he litters this interview with amusing one-liners (over a horrible Skype connection) before his anticipated Adelaide New Year’s Eve set.
The former Kompakt artist, who launched Pampa Records with Marcus Fink in 2009, first visited Australia in 2012. A bizarre fact for one of the most acclaimed experimental and warm electronic artists whose career stretches back almost 20 years, including stints in experimental hip hop outfit Fischmob and International Pony. “They didn’t want to pay me the money I was asking for,” jokes Koze (AKA Stefan Kozalla) about his delayed first trip to Australia last year. “If you want quality you’ve got to pay for it.” Thankfully Koze’s second Australian tour includes Adelaide, as he will play an intimate New Year’s Eve set at Cuckoo. Koze, who has recorded two of the most intriguing, eclectic and scintillating podcasts of the year for FACT Magazine and more recently XLR8R, heads to Cuckoo on the back of his acclaimed second album Amygdala dropping early in 2013. His recent XLR8R set saw the creator of underground club classics Raw, Burn With Me and Mariposa drop everything from alt-classical (Kronos Quartet) to underground hip hop (Blu & Exile), global (Abida Parveen) and club music (Four Tet, Jon Hopkins) for a beautiful 70-minute journey. But his upcoming Cuckoo set won’t be like this. “It’s stupid techno for drunk people,” Koze jokes. “I just did this mix for XLR8R a week ago, this is like a radio show for the day time, for listening when you are in your flat, or

working – it’s not for dancing. I’m not keeping the groove [a club groove]. I need to keep the groove in a set, but not like in a club where you need a rhythm to dance." Koze’s turntablist background means he is one of underground club music’s most acclaimed DJs, backed up by the fact he won SPEX magazine’s 'DJ of the Year' eight years in a row. “I always play the same set,” he jokes. “It’s premixed and I pretend I do something. It’s better. It’s better for me and for the audience. They don’t want to see me mix live.” Koze’s second solo album Amygdala was a gorgeous collection of soft and hypnotic grooves punctuated with melancholy and psychedelic elements, with guests including Caribou, Apparat and Matthew Dear. Despite the eightyear gap between his debut and sophomore
albums, Koze says he is thinking about a new record with Amygdala currently getting the remix treatment at the moment. Pampa has an avalanche of music coming: “Sometimes we don’t have music for half-a-year and now everything is waiting in the pipeline,” he says. Would Koze like the releases to be planned more efficiently? “I can’t change it. I would rather it be more professional and every month have a record but all my friends, they are artists and are suffering from depression and alcohol crises,” he jokes. “I don’t know. Now everyone is coming with music and the whole year we waited and asked. And now you have to accept it. I like it.” Pampa has an impressive roster of Koze's friends and peers, including Isolee, Die Vogel, Ada and Dntel. Earlier in the year Koze said

Brit DJ/producer Mark Wilkinson is D&B’s newest superstar. This year he’s had epic singles, such as Afterglow, sung by Rudimental associate (and former The Voice contestant!) Becky Hill, plus a cred debut album, Lazers Not Included. But will Wilkinson soon be producing beats for a Rihanna, as his RAM Records labelmates Chase & Status have done? He’s keeping mum.
It’s morning in Wilkinson’s London hometown – and, after a few reschedules, he’s conducting interviews ahead of his return to Oz. “I was just making a cuppa tea,” he says brightly. Wilkinson’s 2013 has been “wicked”, but also “a bit mental”. In January his tune Need To Know was playlisted on Radio 1 – a

major coup. He then had to hurry up and complete that album. “It’s just been probably the maddest year of my life, really.” Lately, Afterglow (accompanied by a slick video) went Top 10 in the UK, becoming Wilkinson’s first bona-fide crossover hit. Raised in South London, Wilkinson was given a drum kit at nine. He’d gig in bands as a teenager until he discovered breakbeat. Wilkinson transitioned into a bedroom producer. Thanks to Cyantific, the now junglist managed to get Hypnosis onto Hospital Records’ 2010 comp Sick Music 2. Next he’d submit demos to RAM, only to be promptly contacted by its canny boss Andy C. Wilkinson issued a succession of key records, starting with Moonwalker/Samurai. He was named ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ at 2012’s National Drum And Bass Awards. More recently, The Guardian profiled this “one-man
Chase & Status” as one of its “New Band Of The Day” hipster acts. Wilkinson was prepping Lazers…, licensed to Virgin/EMI, for a spell. The ‘lead’ single, Tonight, surfaced in late 2011. “I’d been working on it for about three years probably, so it did take a while, but everything came together at the right time – and the singles really helped to build it up,” he says. “It’s just difficult to write an album and put out singles – sort of build your profile and still have material left to put on an album.” That Wilkinson could go from airing music via Hospital, equated with liquid funk, to the powerhouse RAM shows his stylistic range – and appeal; “I’ve always just kinda switched it up – like, I’ve tried to make tunes that you can listen to in a club, also tunes that you can listen to on your iPod on your way to work.” Chase & Status have produced music

We are open to every kind of music but somehow we are always looking for music without a formula, which sounds organic and is surprising and, if it’s possible, not heard before like this. We have this narrow roster of artists and we are friends – if they send something it’s because they were working so long on it. Wilkinson, too, has been quietly pursuing pop projects he’s attached to Jess Mills’ Twist Of Fate, the divette quitting Island because of stalling. “I actually produce for other people at the moment,” he divulges. “That’s something that I’ve done for the last year as well on the side which I don’t necessarily shout about. It’s nice to write different types of music and the occasional bit of music for TV.” If Wilkinson is secretly assisting reality pop stars, he’s not saying, but there’s a good reason to be low-key. “I like to keep my ‘artist’ thing separate and let people concentrate on my music, rather than knowing that I’ve done some other things for other people.” Regardless, many will know of Wilkinson’s excellent Zane Lowe-approved remix of Shahid “Naughty Boy” Khan’s Think About It (featuring Wiz Khalifa and Ella Eyre). Actor, Writer & Mentee Laura-Jane Emes is a 25-year-old Adelaide-born actor who has turned her focus to her skills as a writer. “I was quite shy at school, so mum suggested the classes as a way to increase my confidence,” Emes says, who started acting classes at 11-years-old. She soon discovered a love for storytelling and making people laugh. “I was able to turn my sensitive nature into a positive as it’s helped me to tap into the minds of different

Graduating with Honours from a Bachelor of Creative Arts at Flinders University, Emes moved to Sydney for a year and performed stand-up comedy at various venues such as The Comedy Store. “Each gig was an invaluable experience, but I think my heart lay in the subtleties of film and television. More specifically, mockumentaries,” Emes says. In 2010 Emes was fortunate enough to receive the Helpmann Academy mentorship, and since has been living in Melbourne being mentored by Tom Gleisner. At the time of receiving her mentorship, Emes was writing a TV mockumentary mini-series and was seeking advice to refine her idea. “I was thrilled to be partnered with the very clever and hilarious Tom Gleisner from Working Dog,” she says. “Tom has achieved so much in the film and television industry and yet he remains ever so humble. His patience, encouragement and honesty have been astounding. I have endless admiration for his work.” The Helpmann Academy mentorship program is a great bridge between university and the real world. “It makes that jump far less daunting,” Emes says. When asked what advice she could offer those thinking of applying for a mentorship, Emes advises: “Go above and beyond what is expected of the application. Whether this means making a short video or asking lecturers for references, try to think outside the box.” Since the mentorship, Emes has built on her initial idea of the mini-series over the past three years drastically. “That’s the beauty of having a mentor. I’ve finally figured out what I’m trying to get across and precisely where my humour lies,” she says. Emes filmed the pre-pilot for the mini-series in January this year with plans to take it to producers in early 2014. Politics 2013: The Game Of Thrones Anyone foolish enough to have been following the last two or three years in federal politics could be forgiven for mistaking it for a script from an epic fantasy trilogy rather than a period of stable democratic government. As we limped into 2013 with a woman in the seat of power, this year’s script was definitely all about revenge and subterfuge; plots and sub-plots; and, ultimately, men resuming their traditional stranglehold on the throne. 2013 saw us with no less than three different Prime Ministers, and will undoubtedly be cast as a cautionary tale about how the pursuit of power at all costs often leads to tragedy. We can probably debate until the end of time whether or not it was justified, but Kevin Rudd in his malevolent, ruthless pursuit of retribution led to a Labor house divided. Faceless men were unmasked, faction rose up against faction and bloody coup after bloody coup claimed scalp after scalp. Finally, emerging bloodied and bruised, but no less thirsty for victory, Kevin Rudd declared victory from the smoking ashes of Julia Gillard’s grisly defeat. With all opposition silenced, or purged from the ranks, Krudd set about “fixing” a party that he had in large part broken by continuing to nose-dive in the public opinion polls, before finally fulfilling his destiny and being summarily beheaded by public decree at the election. Throughout all of this Tony Abbott relentlessly, and with devastating effect, harangued the Government at every turn. His was an Opposition so true to its name that it is difficult to recall any significant bi-partisanship on any issue. Oppose and attack was to prove to be a winning strategy for the Abbottled opposition though, with an incompetent, fatally wounded government unable to defend itself against a united and coherent opposing force. And so it came to be, that in September of this year an exhausted public unsure of Mr Abbott’s ability to lead in a fair and just fashion, but desperate to leave the bitterness and instability of a Labor era behind them, swept the man in the bluest-of-all-blue ties into power. But retaining the throne is never as easy as seizing it and there are many wildcards waiting to enter the colosseum of power in 2014. With the Greens ceding power to gun-toting micro parties and billionare mining magnates, for progressive voices it probably feels as though we are nearing the end of the second book of the triology, with the land lying in shadow and the path back towards the light seeming faint and fraught with peril. Film // The Railway Man (M) AAAA Director Jonathan Teplitzky’s fourth feature only, as drawn from the memoir penned by Eric Lomax (1919 - 2012), this long-in-development tale of war and its lifelong effects on those who survive is graced by strong performances by Nicole Kidman and a career-best Colin Firth. In 1980, Eric (Firth), an expert in English trains, routes and schedules, meets Patti (Kidman) and they fall in love, although we know that Eric’s trainspotting obsessiveness hides deep psychological scars left after his experiences in World War II. In a strikingly-staged fantasy sequence he’s marched out of a hotel’s honeymoon suite by Japanese

soldiers and cast into a bamboo cage. It transpires that Eric was a prisoner during the building of the Thai/Burmese ‘Death Railway’ (he’s played in these flashbacks by Jeremy Irvine), and his secret construction of a radio led to special treatment and torture by Nagase (Tanroh Ishida and, later, Hiroyuki Sanada), whom Eric hopes to target as his inner turmoil spurs him into journeying back to the region. A harshly moving study of post-traumatic stress (an expression Lomax wouldn’t have then been familiar with) and whether or not we can forgive those who hurt us the most, this rich drama is strongly-acted throughout. Kidman particularly shines and Firth is brilliant – and, in the second half, truly frightening.

A pet project for co-writer/co-producer/ star Steve Coogan and elegantly directed by Stephen Frears, this factually-based drama is powerfully emotional but frequently surprisingly funny – and, it must be said, a curious choice for a Christmas release. Disgraced and unemployed political journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan) is looking to write a book on Russian history now he’s got the time (an amusing running joke), but when he hears of the plight of Philomena Lee ( Judi Dench), who as a young woman (Sophie Kennedy Clark in flashbacks) had her out-ofwedlock son taken from her by a convent of nuns, he decides that it could make a lucrative human interest story. Martin finds that Philomena’s a tough old bird, and although they’re eventually forced to travel to America and uncover secrets (if not the ones you’re expecting), he also finds it astonishing that she’s able to keep on forgiving those who have wronged her – and the film therefore sidesteps potential claims of being anti-Catholic or even an anti-nun nasty. Frears’ films often have unusual casting or odd couples, and yet the pairing of Dench and Coogan seems so lovely and natural that you’re left wondering why no one ever paired them up before, and also why Steve gives Judi some of the best lines here, including surely her first time saying the word ‘clitoris’ onscreen.
Very funny but not quite a comedy (as the Golden Globes seem to think), this factually-based effort from co-writer/director David O Russell (turned out shortly after Silver Linings Playbook) is a veritable who’s who of stars he’s worked with before, and they’re all in fine, fashion-disaster form. In 1978 New York we meet pro conman Irving Rosenfeld (a beer-gutted, combed-over Christian Bale), who runs into the equally cunning Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) and forms a partnership both professional and deeply personal, even though Irving remains married to self-obsessed wildcard Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence, amusingly ghastly in a role written for her by Russell). When their mighty rip-off schemes lead to them being caught by FBI agent Richie DiMaso (permed Bradley Cooper), DiMaso decides to use them in an elaborate scheme to take down New Jersey political operator Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) and, hopefully, anyone else he can manage along the way, as he’s also powerfully drawn to Sydney (and Adams gets about as raunchy as she’s ever been onscreen). With a cool retro soundtrack (David Bowie, Elton John, America) and strong support from Louis CK and Robert De Niro in a small, scary part, this wanders a bit in the middle and does, perhaps, suffer from a lack of truly sympathetic characters as, well, they’re all such awful scumbags. But such wonderfully awful scumbags!
Clicking the gears back in place with Tangled, then treading water with the critically okay though commercially popular Brave, the Disney gang continue recovering from their mediocre years in the early 2000s and re-establishing themselves as animation masters with a new princess movie, and, to sweeten the deal, there are two princesses! Elsa (Idina Menzel), born with the mystical ability to conjure snow, was worshipped by her spirited sister Anna (Kristen Bell), but after a horrible accident, all knowledge of Elsa’s cursed gift was erased from Anna’s memory and the two sisters grew apart. When Anna’s spontaneity forces Elsa to expose her secret before the entire kingdom, Elsa flees into the mountains. Finally realising the cause of their rift, Anna sets out to find her sister. Disney’s most visually beautiful film in decades showcases Menzel’s amazing vocals and is an obscure enough story to have a few surprises. Of course, no Disney movie would be complete without an adorable animal and an enchanted inanimate object; enter Sven, the dopey reindeer, and Olaf the talking snowman, who manages to avoid being annoying thanks to Josh Gad’s endearing voice work. Preceded by the all new Mickey Mouse short Get A Horse, which may well be one of the best things Disney has ever done, the house of mouse has a lot to celebrate this Christmas.

Opening But Unrated The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (M), the next in Peter Jackson’s second Tolkien trilogy, again features Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Cate Blanchett, as well as, this time out, Lost’s Evangeline Lilly and Benedict Cumberbatch now in two roles. Ben Stiller’s contemporary take on James Thurber’s comedic/dramatic short story The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (M) has him alongside Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Shirley MacLaine and Sean Penn.
