THE POWER OF

MAGAZINES! MAGAZINES EMERGE

AS THE

SUPERHERO

AGAIN!

All media is growing, and Print continues to grow despite the general belief that Print is declining. Readership is largely influenced by two things - literacy level and your disposable income. If you have money, then only will you buy a newspaper. Luckily in India, both those things have moved upwards. Ashish Bhasin, CEO - Greater South and Chairman & CEO - India, Dentsu Aegis Network and Chairman, MRUC I am very happy that Print is growing across all languages, and that Print titles in Digital are doing well too. The Print industry in India is still robust and effective, unlike in the Western world. Shashi Sinha, CEO, IPG Mediabrands, India What is disappointing is the fact that niche publications that serve an important segment have consistently been ignored. A different methodology must be used to ensure correct findings for such publications, but sadly both Neilsen and the MRUC Technical Committee have so far not done this. Hormusji Cama, CEO, Mumbai Samachar I am happy to see that Print numbers are growing because it also proves the point that everything is not wrong with Print, and Digital is not the only way to go forward. It justifies the argument that Print has an established sort of acceptance.

Indranil Roy, CEO, Outlook Group

Magazine Advertising actually works! *INDIAN READERSHIP SURVEY (IRS) 2017 : BETWEEN 2014 AND 2017, MAGAZINES SAW A 75% INCREASE WITH 38 MILLION NEW READERS.

Magazine readership up by 0.9 crores - IRS Q1 2019

PRINT IS GROWING No. of additional readers added since IRS 2017 Dailies - 1.8 crores Magazines - 0.9 crores Total number of Print Readers - 42.5 crores

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

hile doing up any space, the first thing that clicks our mind is furniture and we forget to consider the most important aspect i.e. wall. A bare wall is no fun! Don’t you agree? Therefore, we are focusing this issue to wall space that is crucial to bringing a room together. The team showed their

creativity by bringing in stories that might surprise you; from substitute walls to textured effects, wallpapers and wall accessories, you think of an idea and we have got it covered. Well, the good news is yet to be shared! Our recently concluded talk show on Ecological Environment: Rhetoric or Reality with design mavericks went off with great success. Though our glossy pages guide a reader to achieve a trendy home, this talk show aimed to draw attention to issues where the focus is needed. We are not restricting the details in print only, but the crux of the discussion will soon be a part of our YouTube channel The Ideal Home & Garden. Of course, I can’t thank all the architects and interior designers for the insights and ideas they shared that afternoon and our favourite on the list - Bent Chair for making it a fun-filled afternoon.

KITCHEN IDEAS tha are all abou experiences

A Complete Makeover Home interiors have undergone a sea-change in the last five years. Today, home owners are well educated about what they need in their home and how they want their house to look like design wise. The articles in TIHG totally inspires the reader to get updated about the latest trends from the design world. Views of prolific designers and their ideation makes the articles a treat to read. A request to the editor–It would be nice if there can be a page on Q&A with architects and designers. Shruti Sharma, Noida

A Long Journey TIHG has completed more than 12 years, and that itself is a testimony to the fact how good and innovative the magazine is. In fact, in the last twelve months TIHG has become more innovative and visually more appealing. Interestingly, ‘Cover Focus’ and ‘Cover Focus Plus’ has become my favourite sections in the magazine. Both have a mix of national and international designers and brands alike. As the magazine is growing by leaps and bounds, I believe the magazine should tap and focus more on upcoming architects and interior designers from small towns across India. Jhanvi Pradhan, Pune

Pictorial Hues

Green Capers The world is going green. Modern homes across the Western world are giving more emphasis on green living. Energy conservation, use of less concrete in building homes, and reserving a big chunk of the interiors or the exterior for gardening is what we are witnessing. It is high time that in our country too, we start building homes that help us preserve nature. Whether you have a big apartment or a small home, try and dedicate a corner for indoor/outdoor plants. The more greenery, the better is the future for generations to come. Architect Gurpreet Bishnoi, Udaipur, Rajasthan

What makes a home so beautiful? Of course, it’s the interiors and the decor. Homes from across the world are some of the best as they are less cluttered and more spacious. One of the reasons being – most houses are individual villas (that’s a widely accepted concept). Even in India, we have beautiful and appealing homes. However, in majority cases the interiors, the decor, the furniture and the fabrics look stunning, but there is too much of clutter all around. I feel it’s time to look towards the West for proper space management and planning. We have the resources and the talent pool, it’s just that the implementation needs to be in the right perspective. The CenTral CourTyard The overarching style of tropical modernism with touches of the design oeuvre in the interior layering makes a turn key development that stands out worthy of attention.

estled in the quite serene village of Socorro in North Goa, surrounded by evergreen bamboos, amidst the sprawling lush green hills and valleys, is a dream vacation home built by Tahiliani Homes- a boutique interior and architectural firm from the design house of Tarun liani. Salvador Villa Cassia, is a stunning n of contemporary and local architecture. a perfect getaway for those seeking imity with nature. Apart from being ed in a beautiful village, the villa is in close imity with Mapusa, Porvorim and Panjim, to Goa’s most happening beaches of Baga Calangute. Hence, it serves as an ideal ay spot for the discerning. ad over 5,000 square feet, the beautiful includes four bedrooms with en-suite rooms, the day lounge, living and ly rooms. It is built in the likeness of ffrey Bawa’s famous architecture style ical modernism.” The villa is designed ncorporating true Indian craftsmanship the use of contemporary technology. The design sensibility has been to create an outstanding amalgamation of indoor-outdoor living. Which is visible as soon as you enter through the entrance door which opens on to a large lobby leading to the central courtyard where you see a luminous waterbody replete with plants, accentuated by high glazing ceilings, ample space and textured walls. One of the key highlights is the use of wrought iron railings, which lends extravagance through layering and details. The design house which has been working in Goa for over a decade, consider it a sanctuary for city dwellers who want a break from the routine to get back into nature and re-connect with themselves. Keeping this in mind, the architectural style of the villa is governed by the popular vernacular style of the region - a combination of Indian and Portuguese architecture. The designs of the villa boast the use of interesting mixture of tiles, Indian stones and patterned floors to capture the true indigenous architecture of Goa. This theme is carried even into the exterior architecture of the villa, where the walls have an earthy finish along with Mangalore tiles roof that beautifully create a harmonious balance of design. What Really MatteRs In the times we live, climatic changes and global warming have become national issues. Giving hope and inspiration to the world, here are a few extraordinary product designers who are asking to switch to sustainability ImpressIons: shrutI JaIn

What are the products that you offer? Everything from little stools, loungers, larger seating tools and even chair swings made from the unlikeliest of materials – cane, bamboo, and used tyres and other industrial discards. How do you sell them? We work closely with architects on bespoke pieces for interior projects, such as cafes, co-working spaces and private residences. We also participate in design fairs such as the London Design Festival, Index Mumbai, India Story, RAW Ahmedabad, Craft Council of India shows across the country.

Anu TAndon VieirA (The reTyremenT PlAn) Where did you study design from? I did my Bachelor in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from Delhi College of Art and then Master in Design from NID Ahmedabad, specialising in textiles. What prompted you to choose sustainability? I have always enjoyed working hands on with traditional crafts, craftsmen and sustainable raw materials. To make it more relevant I felt the responsibility as a designer to incorporate waste from small industries rather than create my products from virgin material. We create a range of furniture from textile waste ropes, woven over frames made of cane, and used automobile tyres. By utilising materials that are not considered beautiful or exclusive, in the classic sense, and converting them into products that are well designed, appealing and above all can in some way incorporate the waste that is generated by so many industries all around us is what we aim for.

58 | August 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

Where does your design inspiration come from? India is inspiring in so many ways. It’s rich traditional crafts, festivals, textiles, and colours of its streets are forever a source of inspiration.

Designer Speak

How do you sell them? Mostly through my website www.oorja.in. Also, through all The Purple Turtle stores and a few native stores in Mumbai, Delhi, Kozhikode, Cochin and Ahmedabad. Where does your design inspiration come from? Good design is a response to people and life around you. The planet is full of both inspiration and problems, so a good designer has to respond to that.

Jenny PinTo (Jenny PinTo) Where did you study design from? I believe design is natural and intrinsic to all living creatures. I am a self-taught film maker and paper maker. Design fell into place along the journey. What prompted you to choose sustainability? After shifting my base from Mumbai to Bengaluru, I taught myself to make paper and set up a paper making studio. Paper and light seemed like an almost natural combination and I designed a range of lights from my paper; explored many waste natural fibres like banana and lokta. Natural fibres led me to engage with many interesting rural women’s craft/livelihood projects and some urban solid waste projects. Years later I teamed up with Radeesh Shetty of The Purple Turtle and we started Oorjaa with an intent to explore sustainable materials. We worked with quarry waste and we made a new material of it by combining it with natural fibre and what we came up with is a range called Wabi-Sabi. Today, my interest still lies with solid waste and how design can address the issue of the vast amounts of waste that urban areas generate. What are the products that you offer? The paper we make in my studio is used to make a range of lights, stationery and home accessories. I also do site-specific light sculptures and customised papers, books and lights.

Designer Speak

nir meiri, (nir meiri design sTudio) Where did you study design from? I have studied Industrial Design at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. What prompted you to choose sustainability? I believe that if we do not act now and integrate sustainability into our day-to-day life the planet that we live on will be in a bad situation. I choose to increase the awareness to sustainability by using sustainable materials in my work and in that way try to teach people how to live in a more sustainable way. What are the products that you offer? I design and manufacture lamps made of materials originated from nature. At the studio we develop materials resulting in light fixtures; lamps such as the ‘Desert Storm’ - lamps made of sand, ‘Marine light’ lamps made of seaweed, and ‘Mycelium lights’ - lamps made of fungi. Carefully selected materials, often raw and wild, are shaped into clean-cut forms, creating innovative products that play on the tension between the domesticated and the untamed. How do you sell them? At the moment the pieces I make are not mass produced and are sold as an art object. I hope that in the near future people and technology will make it possible to make this product more available and you will be able to find them in every home. Where does your design inspiration come from? My inspiration comes from nature. Many of my designs are inspired from the world of plants and I try to use natural materials in many of my works.

Designer Speak Where did you study design from? We studied design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Management, Los Angeles, USA. What prompted you to choose sustainability? Sustainability is the need of the hour with humans exploiting nature to such an extent that we are on a path of self destruction. With both of us being nature lovers we really felt the need to step in and change the way sustainability is defined by giving it a new perspective, which is, through art. What are the products that you offer? We focus on large scale art installations and sculptures mainly, but also customise smaller objects for home decor or utility purposes in bulk. Over the years, we realised that our movement of upcycling needs more awareness and more permanent solutions. Hence, armed with a strategy to spread ‘Awareness through Art’, we target public spaces and events to showcase art installations made from scrap and waste. Under “Awareness through Art” we work with corporates and organisations, to reuse their industrial waste into sculptures and utility products for use within their organisations. How do you sell them? We depend a lot on networking with the right people at the right events and approach them very organically to build a business connect. We also focus on our social media accounts to spread the word. Where does your design inspiration come from? When you are into design there is no particular point of inspiration, everything and anything inspires you. It could be a passing truck filled with piles of something or even just a plain old tree; design is everywhere–shapes, colours, forms, structures everything becomes eye-catching and a point of inspiration. Gift of Life

India has been the land of art and craft since time immemorial. Sadly, however, some of the art forms are on the verge of extinction. TIHG presents four talents who are doing all they can to review the dying art I m p r e s s I o n s : B e n oy s e B a s t I a n

NehA GANdhI (MATSyA)

Neha Gandhi runs Matsya, an umbrella for authentic, fair Indian crafts. She says, “Indian crafts hold a significant heritage, culture, traditions, which are practiced over more than 100 years, a block printing ajrakh is dated 100 years old and found from the Indus valley civilisation and practiced only by the khatri communities of Kutch. Similarly, we have the Maru Meghwal community from Kutch who have been practicing the leather crafts and have a historic significance to this craft and so is the Luhar community who make the unique copper bells, which is used by pastoral communities to identify cattle even today.” Crafts signify the identify of communities and have played an instrumental tool in women empowerment in rural India. Traditional women artisans from many parts of rural India have been their own designers, entrepreneurs who run their own craft business thus bringing a powerful change in their own communities and surroundings. Neha further states, “At Matsya we connect and curate these authentic crafts directly, which have significant history, quality in terms of design, fair trade to markets, buyers, craft stores, designers and researchers, design students or any craft enthusiasts who are in pursuit of Indian textile and non textile crafts. I have been extremely fortunate and passionate to discover and identify, connect with a wide range of Indian crafts. We are striving now to work with like-minded craftsmen, NGOS, design brand or any one who fits within our umbrella and together we can make an impact.”

For Shineel, it all began with a desire to find something unique, to know how something was made, what went behind making it - the real story, and most importantly the audacity to celebrate the imperfections that come with it. her love, desire, and passion for doing all things beautiful and audacious gave birth to The house of Artisans. A bit of an outlier since childhood, Shineel has always been comfortable, and more so ecstatic, about all things peculiar and rare. She overlooks design and hence each product that comes out has something crazy about it, something that tells a story of what it was, something that makes each piece one of a kind! ThOA works with artisans from across the world who resonate with the ThOA way - of celebrating imperfections, feeling special about each piece created and keeping our world beautiful and sustainable at ShINeeL the same time. Shineel adds, “We love (The hOuSe OF every tiny scrape, miniature cracks, a ArTISANS) slip of a paintbrush, the coarse textures and the blotch of the hues. After all, a tale is not complete without a few swells of sobs, memory is not beautiful without a few scars, and art is not art without the stories of its flaws.

ApArNA ChALLu (CrAFTSBAzAAr) ounded by Aparna hallu, an entrepreneur of Kashmiri-origin, CraftsBazaar is a marketplace dedicated specifically to Indian crafts and arts. Aparna says, “CraftsBazaar helps you discover exclusive products across home decor, apparel and accessories, paintings, art-works and vintage products, sourced directly from the artisans and craftsmen that you may never get at a retail store or at a value proposition of your choice. It goes a step further and makes it possible for you to directly engage with craftsmen to create unique products of your taste from the comfort of your home.” Adding further she says, “I believe in the untapped potential of the rural masses and the associated opportunity for global consumers to support fair trade while accessing resources and handcrafted products directly. It’s all made possible due to the ubiquitous presence of the internet and the mass adoption of cell-phones in remote areas.” The team at CraftsBazaar works hard to preserve and promote the slipping sands of times past by enabling, preserving and marketing the rich Indian heritage throughcraftsbazaar.com. ending on a high Aparna says, “It is our mission to build an ecosystem that connects all consumers with the artisans directly, without any middlemen intervening to slice away at profits, and to influence tastes and dictate what consumers want.”

TIHG People right from her college days, Anupama used to go looking for curio shops in search of little treasures. Most often she would find something that interested her, and she would spend days treasuring her new finds. Moving along, she chose to pursue a career in advertising and marketing and has worked with large ad agencies, digital marketing firms and retail chains. And, it was in between one of these jobs, that she wanted to pursue an idea to promote culture tourism with unique experiences. Anupama says, “I spent more than a year researching, which led me to interact with noted historians, art conservators and other experts in the space. unfortunately, I had to park this project for various reasons, and in turn, it helped me connect the dots between my ANupAMA BhArAdWAj love for curios, flea markets, and art and culture. This is how unfactory was born (uNFACTOry) in 2016.” As a curated marketplace the brand has a strong emphasis on good design - one that is meaningful, accessible and sustainable. unfactory gives high prominence to artisans/designers engaged in contemporarising traditional art and craft techniques. Today, the brand collaborates with over 150 urban and rural artisans and community driven projects. Adding on further Anupama stresses, “Our mission is to build a large network of urban and rural artisans. A community that mutually benefits from each other along with being a self sustaining community. I also see this as an opportunity to reach out to more people and get them to experience the rich culture of arts and crafts of our country.” TIHG

Dating back to early 1900’s, the land belonged to contractor T C W Skipp, which was sold to the now owner K R Kanakarathna few years after Skipp’s death. This 30,000 sq ft of heritage property was a popular venue for entertainment and cultural shows and then became a cinema hall by current owners. The property’s popularity as a cinema hall came to an end in late 1980’s and in 2016 Samsung signed a lease with the property owners to give a new avatar by calling and introducing it as Samsung Opera House by 2018. “Firstly we wanted to give back to the city a centre for art, culture and entertainment that the heritage property was originally known for. We also zeroed down Opera House for opening our first experiential store in India because Bengaluru is a hot bed of tech innovation. The city has the fastest growth for

tech start ups in the world,” says Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President – Sales & Retail Marketing, Samsung Mobiles. With an aim to revive this historic building, and bring back its glory for the people, the brand decided to restore and renovate the property without changing the architecture essence it has. The structural changes were done using the natural materials like natural stones and granite, etc. The beautiful roof of the Opera House was originally built in terracotta tile and therefore the brand procured it from a Manglore based company. However the major challenge was to introduce air-conditioning ducts which was later sorted by keeping them under the balconies so that the air can be distributed to both ground and first floor. Apart from the interiors, the exterior of the property highly maintained and the evenings are always buzzing with people and music! The Ideal Home and Garden August 2019 |

The Pink Zebra, also called the Feast India Co. (FIC) is a take on the bygone British culture in the city of Kanpur, with the extravagance of the European grandeur. Architect Sanchit Arora, the brain behind the concept mentions, “The purpose of making The Pink Zebra was to speak of a complex and contradictory architecture based on the richness and ambiguity of old and modern experience, including that very experience which is inherent in art. The core idea was to create a hybrid rather than pure, compromising rather than clean and leave the visitor hanging in the middle of an artistic sea.” The idea for the restaurant was initiated by the client’s love for Wes Anderson’s set ideology, and his love for fearful quirkiness along with constructed frames, this can be seen throughout the space. The love for extreme symmetry and restricted colour palettes can often give the expression of a surreal, self-contained world, but adding that certain bizarre element to break that monotony of Wes’s spatial ideology came

through the black and white zebra lines dipping themselves in the pink monotone set in the British Raj’s colonial order. Sanchit further reveals, “The other thought was to create a distinct aesthetic architectural style that connects to the city people and poses its stand by the use of a striking colour palette. The Pink Zebra with its unique facade design creates an everlasting effect on the passersby, and invites them into a magical, expertly crafted world whose spaces are framed to treat the eyes.” “Sometimes, architecture seeks to find a harmony between the disconnect of design and gastronomy through a phenomenological relationship of branding,” says Sanchit. The Pink Zebra breaks the monotony of the normal style of food culture in Kanpur and creates an exhibitional blend of architectural elements into the culinary mode. How about dipping a zebra into a deep pink sea? Rightly said - it’s time to visit Kanpur. The Ideal Home and Garden August 2019 |

The essence of ‘Home’ can be felt from initiation to the culmination, as a fine blend of genres that have been adapted from around the world, with sprinkles of relatability instilled as per the name suggests. Revealing what was in her mind, Smriti says, “Home is named after the intent of providing the distinguished patrons an atmosphere of comfort and luxury reminiscent of their own drawing room where they can entertain and enjoy with their family and friends.” Casting an impression of a snug habitat, the design is laid out to instil a variety of experiences, ranging from a den resonating a reading corner, a tropical themed blush bar, a colonial dining set-up, and a pompous music lounge. Complying with her forte of conglomerating numerous styles, Smriti endeavours to merge snippets of European and minimalist form of design, to present a composition that appears almost as a London walk-up apartment right from the inception. Ranging from carpeted stairways to a live performance arena possessing an old world charm, the entire scheme carries its international semblance with elegance. Amalgamated finely with such an opulent ideology, is an undeniable cosy milieu that is realisable from the furniture configurations, the interior decor and treatments inculcated.

The design language clearly elucidates its exclusivity and niche cadre, owing to the target audience of the space. The further an individual delves into the interiors; classy elements in the form of full-height bookshelf wall decor, moulded panels, artwork and chandeliers make glancing appearances; casting the foreign charm in an understated manner. The furniture pieces range from contemporary to colonial, and while a few of them were imported from Soane London, all sofas and table incorporated in the den and Sapphire (music lounge) were designed by the in-house production of DesignEx. Contrary to the enclosed spaces, the terrace houses arched windows and dashes of green vertical and horizontal interfaces with profound usage of wooden pergolas, supplementing the existing environ with an added essence of vitality. Home, thus, not only offers a space to delve into an anomalous setting, but also confers its users with an opportunity to experience a mixture of essences, executed through fine design. TIHG

tul’s ideas, whether for craft design or architecture, are all rooted in tradition, but are contemporary in form. Atul says, “My work is rooted in traditional skills with a contemporary spin without tempering its essence. To me the concept-freedom of living enables designers like us to think like a consumer and marry the needs of ever-evolving lifestyle, with a design-led solution and that is what makes it interesting.” In a panel discussion at Script by Godrej & Boyce at Bengaluru, which the artist was a part of, it was interesting for him to hear different perspectives on how design in today’s context is evolving and has therefore become an intrinsic part of everyday life. The artist says, “Script Huddle is a great platform that brings together like-minded people from the art and design fraternity to share in a conversation around how though design freedom is expanding its limits and stories of innovation in design that deserve to be heard.” Lighting was his first love and that remains till today. Initially, he developed paper sculptures as lights, which was a first for India on that scale. The other materials he enjoys working with are steel, paper and wood. Dheeraj says, “I have always been inspired by the lives of mystics. I think the mystical pursuit is the pursuit of a seeker who is not really interested in the dogma of religion but is instead a keen student of life and its mysteries. My X-ray works are the result of my

own personal mysticism, which is a journey fuelled by my curiosity. So, while the X-ray in its everyday, medical sense is a revealer of our physical inner self, through my work it becomes something more than its mere physical revealer. In a sense it becomes a mystical revealer that creates its own drama.

Satadru Sovan Banduri

S

atadru Sovan Banduri is a multi-disciplinary artist. His predominant interest in recent years has been observation of multifarious aspects of existence in a Metropolis and portrayal of his impressions through his work and the artist has attained a vibrant stroke with his multi-cultural and multi layered new media works. At the same time, he tries not to let his opinions get reflected through his work as far as possible. Infact, he almost always introduces an element of humour in his works so that they remain incisive and insightful. So, in that sense his paintings are a kind of intimate, but third person views of life in a metro. His work comes from global cyberspace, social networking and Phantasmatic visions of race and gender. The artist has attempted to showcase a segment of our society that refuses to be generalised. Consumerism consumes people’s individuality and turns them into larger than life entities. Satadru reveals, “This visual culture would confound and even overwhelm someone who is not a part of the urban milieu or has just recently come to be a part of it. But closer observation and certain amount of empathy from the viewer would reward him with interesting and humorous insights into human psyche. TIHG

oval Bhatia, founder of Bedlam, Delhi and A Little Anarky, a storyteller, a pun master on social media, a lover of dresses with pockets, an avid reader and a collector of all things under the sky, also dabbles with art direction, designing workspaces and her home. Koval’s credo of envisioning a space to design is to embrace and capture the complexity of its inhabitants. Hence, for her, the multifaceted nature of individuals offer a larger space to

explore, create and recreate the spaces they live in. “People can be complex and have multiple aspects to their personality, and I think it’s important to stay true to that in the decor as well.” On her residence at Goa, she shares, “My house reflects who I am and I love that, because that’s what feeling at home is, isn’t it?” Her walls are strewn with plants, books, feminist art, Star Wars posters and bric-a-brac picked up during her umpteen travels. Her designs exhibit a mix of all things and she asserts that “labels such as minimalist, boho, vintage or

eclectic are limiting.” Her personal sense of aesthetic is derived from her love for a range of things and impressions: from colours, textures, countryside and pastoral imagery, pop-culture, and the absurd. Stacks of books and planters of all kinds form the heart of her designs. Her workspace is also intrinsically and visually designed to reflect the work and philosophy of the production house she founded. The walls are smeared with sketches of Tim Burton, the Joker and the logo

at odd nooks and corners, representing anarchy. The designs transcend visual sensibility since they are created with a combination of “form, function and aesthetic.” The key element to the designs are that they are mostly DIYs, assembled, refurbished, thereby saving lump-sum of money you’d spend on interiors with ‘just the good looks.’ Koval specifies that aesthetics and utility are not mutually exclusive. In fact, she lets out an interesting secret - curios for display are found in day-to-day articles. Another significant aspect to Koval’s designing philosophy is the ecological and economical consciousness. She shares, “I cannot bring myself to buy something expensive and mass produced, if I can just create it or salvage it myself and add a bit of myself to the piece.” Among the many curios she has hoarded, her love for fabrics is palpable. The interesting solid curtains, new and old upholstered reading chairs, brightly coloured rugs, printed cushions are all placed in an orchestrated manner to disseminate a warm vibe. Her love for natural light, and green spaces also contribute to the overall simplicity and cost-cutting interiors. She credits the architect of her office, Kavita Singh for turning a barren, decrepit spot to a vibrant workspace. “The second floor of my office is 2,000 sqft of plants. I chose glass walls instead of concrete for cabins to keep it open and airy. I let functionality dictate how the rest was designed.” Koval’s favourite and reliable markets for her beloved fabrics, furniture and artefacts include, Wholesale Market at MG Road in Delhi, Artisan Markets, Amar Colony for colourful furniture, Hauz Qazi for ceramics. She points out that her furniture and design are reused, repainted, reupholstered and refigure at different locations to keep the monotony at bay. Her love for wood, fabric, plants and books had driven her to assemble a shelf that cost less than `1,300. This reflects her conscious effort at creativity that is conducive to both her budget and philosophy. With a smile she says, “I think setting up a space is like telling a story, about who you are, what has shaped you and what you think about. I tell stories using the work I do, and the things I write, and the spaces I design. (You) work backwards (from an object of use to an object of muse) to place it and make it in a way that goes well with the aesthetic you want. I love adding green to my spaces - I like to garden and I find it very therapeutic!” TIHG

THE GrEEn Walls

The lack of vegetation in urbanised areas, as a result of human establishments, directly affects the quality of life. The construction of vertical gardens is recommended both in interiors and especially in the exteriors of the building. The new modern concepts for landscape development are keen on using any kind of concrete or glass, and then turning them into real vertical gardens. This makes a smooth transition to an urban green space for a healthy environment.

When there’s no room to grow out, grow up! Vertical gardening is the new modern concept that countries all over the world are adopting. TIHG sheds some light on it ImpressIons: shrutI JaIn

110 | August 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

What Are Vertical Gardens? Vertical gardening is a special kind of urban gardening suitable to small spaces, particularly for decorating the walls and roofs in various styles, all placed in a vertical space. Green walls are not only spectacularly beautiful, but also helpful in enhancing the ambiance. Why Vertical Gardening? Intensive urbanisation has left hardly any horizontal space for outdoor gardens. Vertical gardening can help in cleaning outside air pollutants - the dust, the carbon footprint of people and fuel emissions, thereby reducing urban heat effect and smog to create habitats for birds and beneficial insects, and expanding the balance of the biodiversity. It also insulates and cools the building envelope. Besides, it can be used for growing food in urban settings, creating sustainable and local control of food sources.

Green House

Plants To Grow Vertical gardening is a fun way to add plants to your balcony, patio, porch, or even your bathroom or kitchen. However, the correct selection of plants plays an important role in the design and functioning of vertical living wall gardens. Plants like ferns, bromeliads, pothos, devil’s ivy, lipsticle plant, succulents, dracaena, crotons, or baby’s tears are best suited to get a stunning effect on a wall. TIHG
