hello
COFFEE AND MAGAZINES go together like marble and brass. Navy and white. Cheese and wine (more on that later). So when we got the opportunity to partner with Nescafé to launch their new Gold range of coffees and flavoured mixers this month, we couldn’t say no! You see, this is real living’s annual Hot List issue, where we reveal 101 of the coolest new products, trends and spaces that you need to know about, and Nescafé has kindly gilded our cover in super-shiny gold to celebrate both occasions. Our cover story is the home of hotter-than-hot illustrator, author and creative director Garance Doré. If you haven’t heard of her, check out her blog Wearedore.com – she’s a big deal. She’s a fabulous French woman living in LA, but her approach to decorating is one that us Aussies can certainly identify with. Flip to p18 and take a look. As I hinted earlier, this month we faced the question, to brie, or not to brie? (Sorry, we can’t stop laughing at that in the office.) Turn to p138 for our guide to matching the perfect wines with lots of different cheeses. There’s plenty of expert advice, so whether you’re hosting drinks at your place or visiting a friend, you’ll be pairing like a pro! Speaking of experts, our decorating story on p110 is all about how to be brave and follow your instincts when transforming the interior of your home, with advice from mother-daughter duo and interior designers Robbie and Phoebe Nicol. They summed up the decorating process perfectly by saying there are no rules – it’s your home, so you can do whatever you want! I couldn’t agree more.
Tick list There’s nothing quite like a home abundant in natural light... or a home filled with timeless furniture. Danielle Siggerud’s place has both. See it on p34.

loving WHEN WE TALK ABOUT HOME transformations, we usually mean the physical changes. But as any homeowner will tell you, the process is emotional, too. This is true for Garance Doré, the founder of lifestyle company DORÉ and a pioneering creative multi-hyphenate. Three days after moving from New York to Los Angeles with her former partner, she saw this almost-new house near Venice. “I’d dreamed of buying a home my whole life, it was very symbolic to me,” Garance tells. “As soon as we signed the papers, we moved in. But I wanted to renovate – it needed love.” Born in Corsica, Garance was drawn to the coastal vibe. For the first time, she says, “I felt supported energetically. There’s no mystery as to why LA attracts hippies and seekers.” The renovation became a renewal. “I didn’t want my house to define me, I just wanted it to be easy and happy.” To realise her vision, she enlisted interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel, who balanced Garance’s creativity with practical solutions and a few feminine (but modern) touches. Of her home, she says, “It feels like a symbolic mother. It takes me in its arms and everything is in its place again.” Here, Garance gets personal about her approach to decorating. A

Garance on… how she cultivates calm “I don’t do formal. I encourage people to feel good and relax, and I think this home breathes ease. It’s probably my reaction to working in fashion wearing high heels! People take off their shoes without me asking because they feel like it. You come back from the beach, hang out, the doors are open. I have a projector for cosy movie nights and there’s nothing like a nook for comfort.”
Garance on… her entertaining style “I grew up with my family all together cooking around me, which had a big impact. Now I like cooking with people, or at least having everyone participate so they feel at home. And here in LA, you meet your friends at home. Home is central to life, we cook and spend time together. I love small – I gave up throwing big parties, it’s too stressful. That’s why I have two dining tables, one for big dinners, one for intimate moments. And I love the open kitchen, which looks over the living room.”
Garance on… her wellness approach “My home is my sanctuary. A big part of my emotional growth is about setting boundaries, and my home’s walls really help. Sleep is a problem for me, so we made it a priority when designing my bedroom. I need darkness, so I chose a dark green scheme. I also think every home should balance light and dark, especially in LA with all the sun. I have blockout curtains, an organic mattress, soft bedding and scents like lavender for relaxation. It feels peaceful, private and sexy. And there’s no TV, although my iPad sometimes sneaks in…” A

Here to stay With a place to put down her roots, it’s no surprise that Garance wanted to anchor her home with built-in sofas, so Sarah designed these blush banquettes. A Loloi rug and a Milo Baughman coffee table ground the room, while framed artworks and vintage Herman Miller chairs reupholstered in Fabricut material add colour to the light, neutral scheme. Oozing Californian ease, the hanging rattan egg chair hints at Garance’s playful side.

Self reflection Garance loves the Stoneland travertine sink in her bathroom where she displays beautiful bottles. “I always wanted a bathroom just for me,” she tells. “I told Sarah, ‘no double sink, please!’ This is my selfish spot, a room for all my stuff where I can feel like nobody’s watching.” French toast “Simple, simple, simple!” is how Garance describes her cooking style, which is reflected in her kitchen’s layout. The quartz Caesarstone island is perfect for prepping food, while Design Within Reach ‘Nerd’ stools provide seating for guests to gather round. She chose matte white GE Café appliances with brushed bronze hardware and terracotta pendants by Hand & Eye Studio. California dreaming There’s a playful approach to pattern and shape in the guest bedroom (opposite). “It’s small but chic. I want guests to feel like they have their own private hotel room,” she explains. To maximise the space, Sarah custom created the bed and bedhead, which is covered in Kelly Wearstler ‘Graffito’ fabric. The bedsides are from Perigold, the lamps are by Cedar and Moss, the bedding is by Flaneur and the Shape Shifter wallpaper is by Drop It Modern.

Garance on… working with an interior designer “I worked with Sarah because I love her style and I love her as a person. She listens! She adapts! She has opinions, which are needed, especially when two creatives collaborate, but she also has a sense of humour. And most importantly, she’s realistic. I met a few other designers before her, and they freaked me out. From the get-go they wanted me to spend more money and made me feel horrible for wanting to stick to my budget. I didn’t want to deal with that. Sarah understood a budget is real! She mixes high with low, which is my philosophy. I love that my interior is not obvious at first glance – it’s not mid-century, or ‘that’s a lot of money’. She helped me on every level, but most of all on finding a clear direction and editing. I had too many ideas!” A

Go with the flow A silk-fringed Half-Moon mirror by Ben & Aja Blanc creates layers of texture on the entryway wall. In its reflection are surfboards by Britt Merrick for H. Merrick; the Sawyer console is from Hedge House Furniture. This mix of Mediterranean and LA influences encapsulates Garance’s style.

10 questions with Garance Doré First impressions of your home? “I felt something immediately and I can still feel it. It felt calm, and without even knowing, that’s what I was looking for.” What attracted you to the area? “The air, the ocean, the walking culture! There’s a healing vibe. I found a sense of peace. I can stop and breathe here.” Any renovating challenges? “Time and budget. More time equals a bigger budget! We pretty much succeeded.” Did you live here during the reno? “I couldn’t – I realised how stressful it is. I hired a friend to oversee all the work.” Do you have future reno plans? “Yes! When you own a house you never stop! I want to renovate my backyard.” What inspired the overall look? “European islands, but sophisticated. I love Greek and Moroccan houses.” Does it reflect your own style? “In so many ways. The main one is the ease I’m cultivating in the way I dress.” How did you incorporate colour? “I wanted more! Sarah was like, ‘you need to relax’ and chose earthy tones. So the pops of colour are the accents.” Did you own the furniture? “I didn’t own much, and this was Sarah’s most crucial job – to source amazing things.” What is your home’s personality? “A woman with a warm smile who never forgets to ask how you’re doing.” R
Fresh start Although Garance only wanted to make cosmetic changes to her home, she had a wall separating the living room and the kitchen knocked down to make the space feel open and bright. Sensual healing Earthy tones bring warmth to the bathroom (left and above) in the form of custom timber storage, Delta Faucet tapware in Champagne Bronze, a Block Shop Textiles rug and a tub-side Perigold end table.

MODERN HIS T ORY
2011
Fabrizio and Nelcya (pictured) moved to Milan in 2011 with their son Noam, and today the company is based there. The two Cs represent the initials of their surnames.

style tip Make your CC-Tapis rug the focal point of a room by pairing it with simple furniture and accessories in similar tones
IN AN AGE where time is the ultimate luxury, it turns out the best things in life can’t be hurried. It can take months to get a table at Michelin-star restaurants; a year for a new season of your favourite TV show to air. And if you want a CC-Tapis rug, there’s a tantalising three-month wait for them, too. Each design is produced at the CC-Tapis company atelier in Nepal by Tibetan artisans using the ancient craft of handknotting. Himalayan wool from Tibet, silk sourced “directly from the silk worm” and aloe plant fibres are spun, washed and dyed without any machinery. Once the rug has been knotted, it may be sheared, embossed or cut to create the final design. Every rug is washed using recycled rainwater and laid in the sun to dry. Sustainable techniques are used throughout the process, and it all happens at the atelier, which means any bespoke creation is possible. You can even match the dye to Pantone and RAL colours. At the helm of this inspiring brand is Nelcya Chamszadeh and her husband Fabrizio Cantoni, who met at hotel school. After leaving the hospitality industry, they moved to France to work at Nelcya’s family-run rug store. They soon opened their own, but it wasn’t until Fabrizio studied interior design in Milan that they turned CC-Tapis into what it is today. The team, led by art director Daniele Lora, dream up fantastical, colourful designs that weave innovation with tradition. A rug by CC-Tapis is art you walk on, a masterpiece for your floor – and proof that good things come to those who wait. R
2018
CC-Tapis won the prestigious Salone del Mobile award in 2018 for its stand at the fair. The rugs were hung like artworks in a museum.
100
In 2015, Fabrizio and Nelcya started CC-For Education, an organisation that provides schooling for Nepalese children. It now supports over 100 students.
40
CC-Tapis often collaborates with creatives, who contribute new aesthetics and interpretations. Among the 40 designers are (from top) Patricia Urquiola, Faye Toogood and Mae Engelgeer.

PICTURE A STORAGE SPACE in a working dockyard. What do you see? Rusty boat parts? Tools? Rigging equipment? Well, that’s exactly what Danielle Siggerud’s home looked like a few centuries ago. The historic building was originally part of a royal naval base on an island called Holmen in Copenhagen. Fast forward to present day and the only clues to the home’s industrial past are the original timber beams and arched windows and doors, all retained during its renovation. SHADOW PLAY The building was respectfully transformed into a contemporary townhouse by its owners Danielle, an architect, and husband Mathias. History and light were their main considerations. “The internal spaces were simplified – walls were demolished to let in more natural daylight and all four floors were opened up and connected in a new way,” Danielle says. “What fascinates me most is the dramatic scenery of shadows; the contrast between light and darkness. It creates a warm intimacy all over the house.” A wash of neutral tones and earthy textures, including plastered stonecoloured walls and blonde timber floorboards, are illuminated in a soft and almost ethereal way. TIMELESS APPEAL Danielle’s decorating style is refined yet understated. “My approach to interiors is characterised by a particular sensitivity to timeless furniture, structures and selected materials that are not trends-driven,” she says. “I work intuitively and with natural materials and furniture that will patinate beautifully over time.” Much of the couple’s furniture is vintage or bought at auctions, and helps to add a touch of personality and history to every room. As does their sophisticated collection of art, ceramics and sculptures. Here, old meets new in the most effortless way. R

An Art Deco-obsessed designer finds her dream holiday home in a seaside apartment from the same era
homes
Chic retreat “We come here every weekend,” says Laure Ardouin Marie of her family’s holiday apartment in Normandy, France. Here, she is pictured beside an elegant Perf buffet from Moroso. Master glass The exquisite designs on all of the windows (opposite) are by Laure’s first studio, Stiletta. A
WHEN THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS ARE OPEN, you can catch a whiff of salty ocean air. From the terrace, you can even watch the waves crash along the coast of Normandy. But this isn’t your typical beach abode, because this home belongs to interior designer Laure Ardouin Marie, whose personal style goes far beyond breezy linens and a neutral colour palette. DECO BEACH In fact, this Art Deco apartment was just what Laure and her husband Thomas were after – a holiday retreat a few hours away from their home in Paris where they live with their two daughters. Tucked away in an historic part of France, the property was “a modern manifesto, with its white structure, pure lines, big windows and panoramic terrace”, Laure says. Not to mention the interior, which gets lots of natural light. “The four-metre-high ceilings, volumes and big doors seduced us.” IN FASHION What it lacked was style, but luckily, Laure has that in spades. After working with luxury fashion brands for 12 years, she poured her talent into interior design and started her own studio, Stiletta. Today, she runs her eponymous design company. As Laure puts it, “I like to combine architecture and atmosphere. Decorating isn’t just about cushions on a sofa, it is a question of style choices.” From the vintage furniture to the herringbone floors, Laure’s home reflects her love of Art Deco. “It’s a jigsaw, mixing vintage goods and contemporary pieces. A sign of the Art Deco movement, but with my personal touch.” NEW WAVE Laure spent four months renovating, followed by two months of decorating. “There was a new story to tell, but I was careful to keep the spirit.” A kitchen was built inside the living room, and a bedroom replaced the old kitchen. She even redesigned the bathrooms, mezzanines and doors. “I wanted something out of the box, light years away from typical seaside decor,” she says. “With subtle graphic codes and bold patterns, I wanted to create an atmosphere reminiscent of Art Deco.” R Natural highlight Because the property faces north, south and west, light streams in throughout the day. It illuminates the living area, which is layered with La Redoute rugs, an Ercol sofa and fluffy accessories by Bloomingville.

Personal taste “My favourite room is the kitchen, where I created a structure to divide the space without separating it,” Laure tells. The Bloomingville lamps are a modern take on Art Deco style. Pyramid scheme Angular wall sconces and decorative tiles on the kitchen countertops (opposite) also draw inspiration from this timeless design decade. Penchant for pattern Cushions with geometric and scalloped patterns (top right) were designed by Stiletta. Shape up A statement Tom Dixon pendant steals the show in the master bedroom (middle right). Laure designed all the patterned ironwork in her apartment. “I love to create and customise things around me,” she says. The final touch Jewellery and decorative objects are arranged on a marble Gubi ‘TS’ console by GamFratesi (bottom right).
3 easy ways to embrace Art Deco style
1
Around since the ’20s, Art Deco can still look modern. Mix geometric lines with curvy shapes, use luxe fabrics and don’t shy away from pattern or colour.
2
Start with the decor. A glamorous mirror, a large rug with a big graphic pattern or a few shapely vases and cushions in jewel hues will add Art Deco opulence.
3
Go for decorative light fixtures. The look is elegant, but experimental, too. Think lamps and pendants with metal accents and polished finishes. A @reallivingmag

Amazing grace An Isamu Noguchi ‘Butterfly’ stool creates a moment of calm in this audacious home. “The house is clear and bright, but with a lot of contrasted and colourful details,” Laure says. Set, match A pair of vintage Scandinavian seats balance the space below the Art Deco window, while Bloomingville pendants descend from the living room ceiling. Breathing space Each of the three bedrooms has its own mezzanine (opposite), which provides extra beds. Cushions by Stiletta dress up the bed, and the ladder doubles as a shelf. Coat check Bags and jackets are hung near the front door on wall hooks by Vitra (top left). She’s got tile Laure decorated the bathrooms with Art Deco-inspired geometric tiles (middle left). “The patterns create vibration and visual emotion,” she explains. “It’s a total look – a block of tiles from the floor to the walls without visual separation.” In the master ensuite, a mirror by Umbra, tapware by Kohler and a mirrored Stiletta cabinet ooze glamour. Metallic moments Glimmers of gold and silver recur in every room – like this bedside unit and Habitat silk blanket (bottom left). A real living

“I RARELY BUY NEW FURNITURE,” says vintage store owner Elin Jensdotter Hont. But for the sofa bed in her guest room, she made an exception. “It’s extra tricky to find a good one second-hand.” Just about everything else in Elin’s home is vintage or crafted sustainably, an ethos that’s important to her and husband Patrik. “Both Elin and I grew up surrounded by second-hand items. But since becoming adults and especially since moving into a home of our own, the interest in vintage furniture and interior design has grown immensely,” Patrik says. SIMPLY THE BEST For this couple, home is an apartment in Stockholm with high ceilings and timber floorboards – an ideal backdrop for their collected furnishings. Though the eras of pieces are varied, from a 1960s Ikea table to a 19th-century wooden bench, a common thread ties everything together: the palette of textures. “I’m very inspired by the Japanese interior style and can sit on Pinterest for hours analysing how they decorate, with which colours and materials,” Elin says. “It’s an aesthetic that really appeals to me, the perfection in simplicity, modesty, natural roughness and asymmetry.” However, when they first moved into the apartment, Elin says there was a less appealing kind of roughness. “The old lady who lived here prior to us had done so for 24 years and had barely cleaned in that time,” Elin says. “But we painted the whole place, fixed up the floors and practically scrubbed our hands off!” MOVING PIECES Though at work Elin collects and sells furniture, at home it’s more about rearranging what she’s got rather than bringing in new things. “Every time we have friends over, they say ‘what’s changed now?’” Elin says. “But we’ve come to a point where we feel better living with less, so usually the changes are about streamlining what we already have.” R Table service “I had our kitchen table in the shop for months, and people had been complaining about its condition so I took it home to use instead of selling it,” Elin says. “I now get so many requests for it!” Vintage remix The living room (opposite) is an eclectic mix of pieces. Elin made the coffee tables from old cafeteria table tops with concrete pots as the bases. The art is by Karin Lengstrand and the Ire Möbler vintage sling chairs are from Elin’s designer friend Soraya Forsberg. real living
61
Stay a while The guest room doubles as an extra living room thanks to a sofa bed from Karup Design. The 1970s Etcetera side chair by Jan Ekselius is one of Elin’s favourite pieces. The coffee table is vintage Ikea, designed by Erik Wörtz in the ’60s. Table setting The dining room (opposite) features more great second-hand pieces: a Hay ‘Loop’ dining table, Børge Mogensen chairs, an antique pendant and vintage rug.

how to buy vintage pieces for the home
1
Don’t be picky with brands and designers – just buy something if it catches your eye. You can find great second-hand pieces from non-high-end brands these days.
2
Think about how pieces could be styled differently. Can it be sanded raw? Painted? Altered and upcycled into a completely different design? Get creative.
3
Found a piece you love? Go over it to check for quality craftsmanship and solid construction, but be accepting of minor imperfections. It is second-hand! A real living
65
Do it yourself Elin made the bedside by altering a daggy old stone coffee table. By cutting off the edges and keeping them raw, the table looks like a cool new design. She also cleverly upcycled a floor lamp to make the paper bedside pendant.

WHEN YOU BUY A PROPERTY designed by an Australian icon, and the icon himself pops in for a visit. This pinch-me moment belongs to Katie and Ian Brannaghan, the owners of this sprawling compound built and designed by renowned architect Karl Fender in 1973. “I managed to get in touch with Karl when we bought the house in 2016, and he watched our renovations take place over Instagram,” Katie tells. “When we’d almost finished, he came out to visit. It was an absolute honour to meet him, and I think a real trip down memory lane for Karl, who was just 23 when he designed the house.” MAKING HISTORY During its 45 year lifespan, the sprawling six-bedroom house in Melbourne’s Mount Martha had passed through numerous owners. It was in a very sad state, but Katie and Ian were the ideal next custodians. In search of a weekend retreat, they saw beyond the termite damage and neglect to appreciate its masterful design, strong bones and mid-century character, and were meticulous in their approach to its restoration. A team of dedicated tradies, led by Katie’s builder brother Sean Whelan, replaced rotting floors, walls and roofs, revamped the pool, laid carpet and terrazzo flooring and painted walls inside and out. “Nothing was a simple job, with challenges every step of the way,” Katie says. NEW BEGINNINGS With the blood, sweat and tears now thankfully behind them, Katie, Ian and their two daughters are free to enjoy the property’s many endearing features, including the striking wooden panelling that reminds them of their childhoods, the sunlight that streams through huge windows, a pool that takes you straight to Palm Springs and lush, landscaped gardens (still a work in progress) filled with palms, cacti and succulents. “During the week, we all live the apartment life in St Kilda East, so on weekends, it’s the perfect seaside/country escape,” Katie explains. In fitting tribute, the property has been renamed “The Fender House”, and can be rented through Airbnb. As for the man himself, “Karl loved what we’d done,” Katie says. “He said he was so pleased the house had found us, which was music to our ears.” R

Home grown Indoor greenery provides the ultimate juxtaposition against the timber panelling. “We absolutely love indoor plants, especially hanging styles like Devil’s Ivy, Pothos and Golden Pothos,” Katie tells.
That ’70s show The couple’s cabinetmaker matched the kitchen’s timber fronts with the rest of the house. “So many people think it’s the original kitchen, which is exactly what we wanted,” says Katie. “They also say it feels like The Brady Bunch kitchen.” real living

Call me “The Australian hard wood timber panelling throughout is a major feature of the house and a big reason we fell in love with it,” Katie says. A large George Nelson ‘Ball’ light from Luke Furniture is the perfect addition, while the disconnected 1970s intercom phone is an endless source of entertainment for the girls.

APPLIANCES FOR COMPLETE FABRIC CARE Fisher & Paykel laundry appliances feature multiple wash and dry cycles to take care of everything from doonas to delicates. Smart technology ensures less noise and optimal results. With a variety of styles, we have the right solution for every laundry.
BELOW Fisher & Paykel 12kg ActiveIntelligence™ Front Loader Washer and Fisher & Paykel 9kg Heat Pump Dryer.
TOP: Designer Sarah Wolfendale, Photo Shannon McGrath; BOTTOM: Architect Eleanor Eade, Photo Adam Gibson.
LOVE YOUR LAUNDRY
The Anatomy of a Laundry Transforming your laundry into a stylish, efficient hub of home organisation and cleanliness is easier than you think. All it takes is a little planning, some creative thinking and the right appliances. Follow these tips to learn to love your laundry again. IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS How many weekly loads do you wash? How much drying and folding do you do? What about storage? Assess each of these needs, giving thought to how they may change as your family grows and your lifestyle changes.
Your washer and dryer should come together to make the perfect pair in form and function.
SPATIAL PLANNING If space is at a premium, consider stacking your washer and dryer vertically to make best use of smaller rooms or cupboards. Alternatively, install side by side beneath the benchtop to maximise workspace. STORAGE Use high shelves for seasonal storage, and replace cupboards with drawers as they are more ergonomic and efficient, often fitting more into the same space. ACOUSTICS A quiet laundry requires quiet appliances and sound insulation in the cabinetry and walls. With a smooth rotation at all speeds, Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive™ motors are among the quietest in the world.

Kitchen colour In Robbie Nicol’s kitchen, a Brett Whiteley print hangs on a wall recently painted in Resene ‘Cliffhanger’ – the perfect complement to the travertine worktops. Phoebe designed the new pendant light. In the frame Pictured opposite, gilt-framed portraits handed down through the family are displayed throughout the home, and mixed with contemporary artworks, such as the piece by Colin Lanceley. A tree trunk lamp from The Vault adds a touch of humour. A

Vintage modern Beside the kitchen is the antique dining table and chairs from Phoebe’s father’s childhood. “We’ve had fabulous dinner parties here,” Robbie says. The bust is from The Vault and the artwork is by Angie Pai. Screen time Robbie has had the vintage screen for years. It currently sits in the front room, paired with a leather armchair from Edward Clark Antiques in Melbourne. Time for a change “I get sick of things,” says interior designer Robbie Nicol of her desire to transform her home every so often. Her worker’s cottage in Sydney has had many incarnations since she bought it with her late husband Alasdair back in 1998, but this latest one – designed in collaboration with Robbie’s interior architect daughter Phoebe Nicol – is perhaps her most daring. “I just love the work Phoebe’s been doing,” Robbie says. “We’ve got different aesthetics, there’s no doubt about that, so I said ‘Why don’t you change things?’” Here’s how they did it. A
Room refresh Phoebe completely overhauled Robbie’s bedroom. Previously wallpapered in a dark grey pattern to match an upholstered bed, the walls are now crisp white. The new bedhead design echoes the lamps, both Phoebe’s creations. They’re a modern contrast to the antique bedside table and painting.
style tip Clad an entire wall in mirror to visually double the size of your room and bounce light around
1 cull what’s not working When deciding on what to keep and what to move on, Phoebe says you can’t be too sentimental. “Look at the quality of a piece. Only keep designs that can stand on their own – the rest can go,” she says.
2 set the tone with colour Paint is the easiest thing to change – and one of the most cost effective, Phoebe says. Robbie chose a deep green called Cliffhanger by Resene. “I thought about carrying the colour all over the ceiling, having it like a dark cave, but I wasn’t game enough. In hindsight, I should have,” Robbie says. Everything else on the ground floor of the cottage, from walls to the kitchen joinery, is painted in this moody hue. A tip both mother and daughter insist on: make sure you know exactly what paint base you’re using – some painters and stores will colour-match your choice with a lesser-quality paint base.
3 ground the room with furniture “I love dark walls, especially with antiques. They thrive on that background,” Phoebe says. And Robbie has some incredible antiques; some pieces inherited from family, others more recent purchases. “Antiques go in every interior, but you have to offset them with modern elements,” Phoebe says. To that end, she brought in pieces such as the customdesigned pendant above the kitchen bench and the super-chic pelmet over the dark grey curtains, and had the 10-year-old sofa slipcovered in fresh white.
4 arrange art and accessories This part you can take your time with. “I was moving things around for three months to make them settle and look amazing in their locations,” Phoebe says. It’s important to keep tweaking until you find that just-right spot for each of your treasured belongings. Be playful with your arranging – for example, over-fill one wall with artworks and under-fill another. R
decorate
Lived in Phoebe freshened up the sofa with a white slipcover with inverted box pleats on the skirt. Bolster side cushions and back cushions with tailored flanges also add to the modern look. The sofa is teamed with a pair of chairs from Lydie du Bray Antiques. On top of Robbie’s coffee table is a vase by Deborah Halpern and a sculpture by Shelley Witters from the Vault.

STYLE IT
hotel vibes at home
Enjoy the ultimate staycation in your bedroom by using the same style tricks they use in the luxury lifestyle biz
Make it like a pro An unmade bed wouldn’t go down well in a five-star establishment, and same goes at home. Tuck sheets and blankets in tightly and fold at the sides for that smooth and sleek look. Petr Houf from Bemboka (which supplies its blankets to many of the world’s leading hotels and resorts) suggests buying bedlinen “made from the best quality cotton, which won’t pill or tear, and can become softer over time. It goes without saying that all bedding items should be
machine washable and tumble dryable; dry cleaning is not a good option,” he adds. Create a harmonious layout Symmetry brings sophistication, balance and a sense of calm to a space, and is an essential factor in hotel room layouts. The simplest way to achieve this is to buy two of everything – bedside tables, lamps, artworks, mirrors or rugs – which can be placed either side of the bed or the room. Don’t forget your windows All the best hotel stays involve a sleep-in, and window treatments will assist in this. Leah Aspinall, head of creative at BlindsOnline, says blockout roller blinds are an ideal choice. “They provide privacy and block the light for a great night’s sleep, as well as thermal protection to regulate temperature. Go heavy on texture for wow factor – a linen look, thick weave or even a ribbed finish.” R

Start with the bed If you picture your favourite hotel suites, the bed is usually the star of the room, placed smack bang in the middle. A sturdy frame and supportive mattress are key, while a plush bedhead adds an extra dose of luxury. “An upholstered bedhead evokes instant ‘breakfast in bed’ feels,” says Castlery’s head of buying Marion Duzan Pouliquen, “or try dark, moody tones of velvet like fern green or midnight blue.”

YOUR CLOTHES ARE AMAZING, SO LET US LOOK AFTER THEM FOR YOU It takes time and efort to put together an incredible wardrobe, so it makes sense that you should treat each item with care. However, this isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Every fabric is diferent, and each has its own unique requirements for looking good, wash after wash. Fisher & Paykel’s new 12kg Front Loader Washing Machine with ActiveIntelligence™ provides the right fabric care for everything from delicates to doonas. Designed to match the new 9kg Heat Pump Condensing Dryer in both looks and performance, becoming the perfect pair.
HANDLE WITH CARE You can confidently wash everything in your wardrobe with 14 specially designed cycles. Keep your activewear and gym gear in tip-top shape with our Sports cycle, which slowly heats up the water to remove mud and sweat to avoid it from setting into the garment. Fine fabrics are washed carefully with the gentle Delicate cycle. Stay healthy in Spring, as the Allergy cycle eliminates pollens and dust with a higher water temperature, leaving each item safe and clean. No time to deal with wrinkles? The Easy Iron cycle minimises creases, so your favourite items are ready to wear sooner. The Woolmark approved Wool cycle provides a gentle wash. Specially designed to protect the protein fibres in wool and silk from shrinkage and distortion, maintaining your garment’s softness while removing degrading oils.
TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF WASHING Skip the guesswork and get amazing results from every wash. ActiveIntelligence™ Technology is designed to provide ideal wash conditions. Intelligent sensors determine your laundry load size and soil level, adjusting the wash time and using the Auto-dose feature to dispense the optimal amount of detergent for the load. This eliminates detergent residue, while still taking care of your precious fabrics.

wall lamps It’s not just the kitchen that could benefit from a sconce or two. Adorn a hallway, patio or bathroom wall with a beautiful lamp and it will double as a work of art.
table lamps In rooms where you like to relax, display a lamp on the bedside, console or side table. Think of it as a decorative object that enhances both visibility and intimacy.
floor lamps When you want to set the mood and bright downlights just won’t do, it’s good to have options. Floor lamps cast patterns across the floor and distribute warm light.

Take the time to ask your insurer what discount they’d give you if you allowed them to insure, say, your home, contents and car insurance. 2 When you’ve been with the same insurer for years, it’s worth asking for a loyalty discount. This can end up being five or 10% of the final bill. 3 Buy online. Many insurers offer great discounts if you choose to purchase a policy online. 4 Install safety features to enjoy further discounts. Security screens, back-to-base alarms and even something as simple as sensory lights can all reduce your premiums. 5 Paying annually can save you up to 10%, as many insurers charge extra for cover if you pay your premium by monthly instalments.
Health insurance 6 Mix and match your policies. Use one provider for hospital cover and another for extras. 7 Consciously uncouple. There is no benefit in having a couple’s policy. Two singles may be better, as you could remove obstetrics for the male partner while keeping it for the female partner who may be trying to conceive. 8 Keep items “on ice”. You can “turn off” items that you don’t believe you need to be covered for in the immediate future. Take care here, as premiums may reduce but you’ll need to re-serve the waiting periods if you switch them back on.
Nothing to lose Capra Eyes loose pocket in Yellow, about $358* for small, Anya Hindmarch.
Lip service There She Is leather lips purse, $34.95, Kikki.K.
Life insurance 9 Check what insurance you have through your super fund as members are automatically given basic death and TPD (Total Permanent Disability) cover. Premiums are paid out of your superannuation balance rather than your taxable income. This can help if cash flow is tight, and because it’s paid with pre-tax dollars, it can act as a serious tax perk. It’s especially valuable for people with health issues who would otherwise struggle to find affordable cover. 10 While insurance through super can be cheaper, be sure to compare what you could get from a retail insurance policy against the benefits inside your fund, just to be sure. 11 If you buy your income protection insurance outside of super, you can claim a tax deduction. If you buy it through superannuation, there is no tax benefit to you personally.
Travel insurance 12 Check to see if your credit card offers “complementary” travel insurance. To be covered, you will usually need to pay for a minimum amount of travel costs with your credit card. For example, you could pay for your flight, or prepay some of your accommodation. Each policy is different, so read the fine print before signing up. 13 Buy cover direct from the provider. Insurance organised through a travel agent or airline is convenient, but usually comes with hefty commissions added on top. 14 Avoid options you don’t need to lower the cost of your cover, but be sure to add cover where you do need it. There’s no point buying a basic policy if it doesn’t include winter sports and you’re off skiing. Insurance is useless if it’s not tailored to your needs.
*conversion correct at time of print
Car insurance 15 If you have the option of parking your car off the street (in a carport, garage or secure parking bay), this can reduce your premium. 16 Consider raising the excess on your policy, but remember you’ll have to pay that increased amount at claim time if you are at fault. 17 Good insurers allow lots of choice when it comes to age restrictions on your motor policy. If younger people aren’t going to drive your car, go for the highest age limit that fits your scenario to reduce your premium. 18 Have you insured your car at agreed or market value? An agreed value policy will generally cost more. 19 Ask about a no-claim bonus: a reduced premium for drivers with a clean driving record. 20 If you don’t drive regularly, consider pay-asyou-drive or usage-based insurance. For usage-based insurance, technology installed in your car tracks things like your speed, distance travelled, where you drive and how hard you brake and accelerate, and then calculates your premium using this information. Numero uno Who says house numbers need to be pedestrian? This rounded version wrapped in ivy is a feature of the home’s entry. Step this way Permeable natural bluestone steppers lead up to the light blue front door, a signature shade of the owner-architect’s. Growth spurt Mixed natives and exotics grow in harmony amid the timber, steel and stone (opposite), including silvery lamb’s ear (stachys byzantia) and white correa (correa alba) hedging pruned into balls.
WHEN YOU LIVE ON A SMALL INNER-CITY BLOCK, every square metre of space counts – inside and out. And it was with this in mind that landscape designer Frances Hale from Melbourne-based studio Peachy Green set about creating this charming courtyard garden for her client, George Fortey from NTF Architecture. “It was important to maximise the area we had and create as many layers and textures of lush, loose, leafy garden as we could,” she says. Careful consideration went into plant selection: Gleditsia ‘Shademaster’ trees act as a feature and provide dappled shade, while their lime-green foliage pops against the dark stained-timber exterior; dichondra repens ground cover provides spongy contrast against the bluestone stepping stones; and Boston ivy (parthenocissus tricuspidata) curls its way around the pergola, up the walls and towards the front door, to soften the concrete facade. The finished space also encompasses a paved area with built-in seating, barbecue and clothes line, a herb garden and rainwater tank. “Despite the small footprint, it shows that with careful consideration and clever integration, a family of four plus pooch can have everything they need to live with comfort and ease in a minimal space,” Frances says. ANCIENT LANDMARKS, modern wonders and one of the best public transport systems in the world – for a holiday experience likely to leave you on a high for months after you return, get thee to Japan! Travel and lifestyle photographer Nicola Levitt and her fiancé Alon Taylor recently spent two-and-a-half weeks exploring this fascinating country, and can’t speak highly enough of their experience. “We were looking to immerse ourselves in a different culture, and Japan is like another world,” Nicola says. With the aim of seeing the country in all of its diverse lights, they divided their time between the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, the magical Onsen (hot spring) town of Kinosaki and the culturally rich city of Kyoto. They also sojourned in a mixture of Airbnbs, home-stays and hotels: “Each place offered its own unique experience,” Nicola explains. With her camera always in hand, she found no shortage of inspiring sights and scenes to capture. “It wasn’t always particularly ‘pretty’ but I was really drawn to the architecture, especially the suburban apartment buildings with pastel coloured tiles, which acted in stark contrast to the old-worldly machiyas [traditional wooden townhouses typical of Kyoto],” she says. Shopping and eating also rated highly on the couple’s to-do list, and they were spoilt for choice. “The beauty of Japan is that anywhere you eat will be good,” Nicola says. The same can be said for the myriad boutiques, department stores and concept stores on offer. “Give yourself a time limit!” she jokes. By trip’s end, Nicola and Alon were utterly enamoured with Japan and its many charms. “We returned home feeling like we’d learnt so much and seen a very special part of the world,” she says.
