CASE Construction Equipment is investing in its European plants in Italy as part of its manufacturing strategy for the region, which is based on the creation of two production hubs, focusing manufacturing expertise on specific product families in each facility: one for excavators in San Mauro, the other for wheeled equipment in Lecce. The Costa Concordia cruise ship was wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio in Italy on January 13, 2012. The cruise ship was brought one year ago to Port of Genoa to be dismantled. The first stage of the wreck’s dismantling project that saw over 5,700 tons of materials removed from the ship. The work was awarded to the consortium Saipem San Giorgio. Among them also the company Fratelli Omini, Milan-based company that specializes in industrial demolition, historic Mantovanibenne customer. To perform this work, Fratelli Omini bought two demolition shears SH410 Eagle II, 47 tons of steel and power. www.mantovanibenne.com

A NEW 53 TONNE-METRES
OM STILL handed over a brand new high lift pallet truck of the type EXV 10 to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). What makes this fact so special is that the EXV 10 is the 250,000th truck produced in the STILL factory of Luzzara (Italy). This plant has a longtime experience in the development and manufacturing of warehouse trucks since its story began in the Sixties when the company was founded under the name Piccola Industria Meccanica Sul Po, named Pimespo within these walls. The plant has grown a lot since then. Today the trucks from Luzzara factory are distributed worldwide. In 2011 the factory was chosen as center of warehouse truck production for the whole STILL Group. www.om-still.it
The Fassi F545RA xe-dynamic is the last model in the XE range. With this new model, Fassi achieves the goal of producing a true 50 tonne/metre crane with a footprint that is compact enough for installation on a 3-axle chassis. The new Fassi crane has been designed to build on the performance of the current smaller model in the XE range and take it further. It is an all-new crane that completes the high capacity range between the F485RA xe-dynamic and the F560RA he-dynamic models. SHOCK TO THE MARKET Doosan Bobcat EMEA showcased a prototype of the Bobcat E10 Electric mini excavator for the first time at Bauma 2016. The E10 miniexcavator is small enough to pass through a standard European door. The alternative powertrain option in the Bobcat E10 Electric model comprises of an electric motor that can be powered both by a pack of rechargeable Li-Ion batteries or a 400 V mains electric supply via a plug-in power cable. The batteries can be recharged in less than an hour to reach full capacity and the excavator can work independently of the mains power for 2-3 hours. Part of the massive Hong Kong-ZhuhaiMacao Bridge project, the Hong Kong Link Road project involves the design and construction of a 9.4km-long viaduct section from the Hong Kong Boundary to Scenic Hill on the Airport Island, supporting dual three-lane carriageways. The bridge is Hong Kong’s first one with a pre-stress and pre-cast pier structure. For transporting the pre-cast bridge elements, Dragages Hong Kong trusts the Nicolas MHD G2 SPE modules. Abertis signed up an agreement to purchase a 51.4% stake in Italy’s A4 and A31 toll roads for a total amount of €594Mn. The A4 Brescia-Padova is the third busiest toll road in the country and an essential route connecting Italy’s industrial northern region to Europe’s financial heart. The tunnel underpasses the city of Caltanissetta in a quite complex geological cluster with high hydraulic load and highly deformable soils. During design reviewing the Contractor CMC proposed to client ANAS a “ValueEngineering” solution to substitute the lay-bys with an emergency lane, extended along the tunnel. The new solution has a 11.25 m width carriageway with two 3.75 m lanes complemented by a 0.50 m platform on the left side and a 3.25 m platform on the right side (emergency lane) that continues throughout the tunnel length. The “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS dollars 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company CMC Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway SS 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo. The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two section. First Section: just achieved and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project: the "Caltanissetta" tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line.

Since March 6, 2016, Europe and Asia have been linked by the Third Bosporus Bridge. Construction began in 2013, and the final key segment to close the deck was welded in place yesterday. MEGAPROJECTS The Government of Panama on May 26, 2016 announced the commencement of major new transportation and energy megaprojects with international investments and partnerships worth over $4 billion. French government has recently announced that 1,000 km of road have to be paved with durable photovoltaic panels over the next five years, with the goal of supplying renewable energy to 5 million people - around 8 percent of France’s population. This will be the first time solar panels will be installed onto public roads, and the patented panel design, known as Wattway pavement, is unique in that it can applied on top of existing roads, without having to rip up or reinstall any infrastructure.The project is the result of five years of research between French road construction company, Colas, and the French National Institute of Solar Energy
(INES). Another benefit comes in the construction of the 15-cm photovoltaic panels, which are made of a thin film of polycrystalline silicon, coated in a resin substrate to make them stronger. The film is just 7 mm thick. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) has been inaugurated on June 1, 2016. With the gathering of the one thousand randomly selected representatives of the public for the first trips, the opening festivities for the world’s longest railway tunnel have begun. For the festival involving half a dozen heads of state and government, everything is ready. CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE Pilosio studied and provided diverse formwork systems for the construction of 22 concrete piers and two abutments for the big cable-stayed bridge, in accordance with the needs of the Italian Maeg Costruzioni SpA Company who are engaged in building the bridge between Basra and the rural area of Tannumah in Iraq. For both companies, this is the first experience in Iraq, contin-

More projects are underway for the creation of additional bridges, tunnels and new roads. The bridge has a total length of 1,188 m and is composed of a central cable-stayed bridge of 288 m with spans of 69 + 150 + 69 m and two approach viaducts supported by 22 piers of varying height and two abutments. The total weight of the structure is circa 5,400 tons.
