MTU’s Series 1000 engines are compliant with EU- Stage IV and EPA Tier 4f emissions legislation and are to be used to power new excavators in JCB’s JS 300, JS 330 and JS 370 series. ertha, also known as Big Bertha, is a 57-foot-diameter (17.4m) tunnel boring machine built specifically for the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel project in Seattle. It was designed and manufactured by Hitachi Zosen Sakai Works in Osaka, Japan. It is the world’s largest earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine, at a –

cutterhead diameter of 57.5 feet (17.4m) across. The machine is 326 feet (99m) long and weighs 6,100 tons. Tunnel boring began on July 30, 2013, with the machine originally scheduled to complete the tunnel in December 2015. On December 6, 2013, work was halted because of an unexpected impediment. Digging resumed on April 29, 2016, digging under the Alaskan Way Viaduct. WSDOT estimates that the tunnel would be completed 27

The BTC consortium, in which Astaldi Group holds a 42.51% stake, has adopted a green philosophy: concrete will be made using the rock excavated to build the tunnels, and truck passage will be reduced to a minimum thanks to a system of conveyor belts that will carry the excavation –

material directly to the crushing system and cement plant being built a short distance from the site, making this a “fully local” work site. PROJECT STRENGTHS CMC proposed some improvements to the Final Projects for which the tenders were initially launched which leave the infrastructure configuration unchanged, but also ensure undeniable advantages. In short, the improvements were the following: • Minimization of the impact of construction sites and works; • Upgrading of the stations (Nesima-Misterbianco lot); • Optimization of excavation methodologies; • Management of excavation soil and rocks. Excavation by TBM-EPB, supporting the tunnel face with a mudpressure balance system, was considered the perfect solution to pursue the above objectives.
