SCOPE:
All employees, contracted personnel or non-employed staff who have contact with patients and visitors. Employees represented by a union are covered under the provisions of that contract. When differences between policy and contract arise, the language in the contract shall prevail.
PURPOSE:
To establish standardsfor appearance, grooming, and dress designed to promote a positive professional image for employees, volunteers, and students working at Research Medical Center.
POLICY:
• Employees should wear uniforms as prescribed or professional attire consistent with their position.
• Uniforms – Research Medical Center Main and Brookside Campuses:
• RN uniform tops are to be navy in solid color. Uniform pants are to be navy or black in solid color. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white, black, or navy. (exceptions: Women’s Services; OR; COPS)
• PCT/Critical Care Tech/Unit Secretary/Emergency Service Tech/Advanced Paramedic uniform tops are to be olive green in solid color. Uniform pants are to be olive green or black in solid color. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white, black, or olive green. (exceptions: Women’s Services; OR; COPS)
• Ancillary uniform tops are to be charcoal in solid color. Uniform pants are to be charcoal or black in solid color. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white, black, or charcoal. (exceptions: Women’s Services; OR; COPS)

• RN uniforms are to be navy in solid color. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white, black, or navy.
• Mental Health Tech uniforms are to be hunter green in solid color. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white, black, or hunter green.
• Safety Coordinators uniforms are to be khaki pants and black shirts. Long or short sleeve shirts worn under the uniform are restricted to a solid color of white or black.
• Exceptions to uniform requirements for holiday or special event celebrations may be authorized by senior management.
• Lab coats worn with uniforms must be black, white or same color as uniform.
• Jackets without hoods and sanctioned by Research Medical Center senior management will be allowed.
• Monograms or logos on uniforms or jackets are restricted to employee name, department name and/or facility name. Monograms are not required and are at the employee’s expense unless mandated by the employer.
• Clothing must be neat, clean, and appropriate for a professional environment. Clothing considered inappropriate to wear while working includes, but is not limited to:
a) Tight or revealing clothing
b) Leggings/Stirrups, Casual Cropped pants (with cargo pockets, draw strings, etc.)
c) Sweatpants/sweat suits
d) Shorts and skorts
e) Mini or extremely short skirts
f) Denim (unless specifically allowed during employee activities/events)
g) Hats (non-uniform)

i) Flip-flops or sandals
• Shoes should be clean, polished and in good condition. Employees exposed to blood and body fluids may not wear open toe, sling back, or other shoes with holes/openings. If an employee is injured while wearing prohibited shoes, worker’s comp benefits may be reduced.
• Personal hygiene, hair styles, makeup and jewelry should conform to business and professional standards. Visible body piercing other than earrings are generally prohibited. However, visible body piercing resulting from a bona fide religious practice may be accommodated in ways such as covering them up, clear piercing etc. Under no circumstance will body piercing be allowed which pose a risk to the patient, employee or create an infection control hazard.
• Earrings should be secure and appropriate.
• Fragrances/perfumes should be worn conservatively as to not bother others. In the event a coworker has an allergy fragrances/perfumes may be prohibited completely,
• Tattoos must be appropriate for a professional environment or otherwise must not be visible. Examples of inappropriate tattoos include but are not limited to nudity, profanity, and gestures.
• Artificial nails are prohibited in patient care areas, Food Services and Environmental Services. The facility will comply with CDC guidelines.
• Employees not in compliance with this policy may be sent home to change and may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
