RHEUMATOLOGY NURSES SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY The Rheumatology Nurses Society (RNS) is a non-profit professional nursing organization representing nurses who are engaged in clinical practice, education, and research for the care of patients with rheumatic diseases. Through the efforts of the RNS leadership, rheumatology nursing was recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) in 2012 as a nursing specialty. Following this recognition, RNS and the ANA co-published the Scope and Standards of Practice for Rheumatology Nursing in 2013 to better define the role of the profession. RNS recently took the important step of cementing a relationship with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to develop a new board certification through portfolio for rheumatology nursing. The new certification program is currently under development and scheduled to launch in 2016. In 2015, RNS also published the Core Curriculum for Rheumatology Nursing, a 484-page hardcover textbook. Led by an editorial board of four rheumatology nurse leaders, a team of 27 rheumatology nurse authors, five section editors, and other experts in education, research, and publishing helped developed the first edition of this curriculum that espouses the principles, knowledge, and resources available to the rheumatology nurse. This publication helps guide rheumatology nurses in their approach to care across many of the more than 100 rheumatic diseases that they may see in daily practice. The RNS is a recognized authority in producing relevant education and practice tools for rheumatology nurses through the development of live annual conferences, online enduring content, nurse tools, patient resources, and peer-reviewed content including the new Rheumatology Nurse Practice initiative. The Rheumatology Nurse Practice (RNP) initiative consists of three exciting and free programs including a new peer-reviewed newsletter, a series of Google Hangout (webinar) live programs, and regional live events. The RNS currently represents over 800 members who have access to its full array of professional and educational activities. A number of free educational tools are available on the RNS website for the broader population of rheumatology nurses throughout the United States and the world. The RNS has a broad reach and influence within the global rheumatology community of health care professionals, physicians, industry, and patient populations. Beyond its internal data sources of thousands of targeted healthcare professionals in rheumatology, the RNS is an avid adopter of social media and other emerging communication platforms which include LinkedIn groups, 2,940 followers of its Twitter feed, more than 12,000 Facebook “Likes, and live and enduring content developed through Google Hangouts.
