100 Years of parks and recreation History buffs may remember 1914 as the beginning of the first World War, while any great sports enthusiast will tell you that it was the year of Babe Ruth’s first professional baseball game. But within these four walls in our downtown office, we know that 1914 marked the inauguration of Parks and Recreation here in the City of Roanoke.

With a century of good times behind us, we look forward to another century of family, fun and friendships. Along the way, we genuinely invite you to join us in this wonderful venture.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation publishes PLAY four times each year. It is available at the Parks and Rec Administration office, city libraries, Dicks Sporting Goods or at www.PlayRoanoke.com.

To celebrate, our 100 years, we’re asking you to take to the parks and join us for a couple jovial celebrations. In April we’ll invite the community for a grand opening of a brand new park at the former Countryside golf course location, and in May you’re encouraged to join our family-friendly and free National Kids to Parks Day at River’s Edge (see page 26-27 for details). www.PlayRoanoke.com

As our first official open spaces, Highland, Elmwood and Melrose Parks have worked to put smiles on faces throughout the 100 years, and since then, we’ve established more than 70 additional parks or greenways to serve our citizens.

Swimming 2: (6+) This class builds on the fundamental skills learned in Swimming 1. Class focus is on unsupported front and back float and glide, combined stroke on front and back, and increased safety skills. Participants must have successfully completed Swimming 1. Swimming 3: (6+) Aquatic skills learned in previous classes are continued. Coordination of front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, rotary breathing, treading water and basic rescue skills are taught. Swimming in deep water is introduced. Swimming 4: (6+) Participants will become more independent and increase their endurance in the water by practicing and refining elementary backstroke, front and back crawl and breaststroke. Diving skills are also introduced.

6

SPRING 2014

Swimming 5: (6+) Participants refine and coordinate the key strokes learned in previous swimming courses at increased distances. Front and back open turns are taught. Deep water work includes diving, water entries and treading. Swimming 6: (6+) This class is often used to introduce some basic lifesaving skills (not a lifeguarding class) to help the student be more aware of water safety. Learners at this level should be able to do all strokes successfully, and be able to switch between strokes on command. They should be able to dive effectively, and swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping. Adult: This class is designed for the beginner swimmer to the advanced. Abilities will be evaluated in the water by a certified instructor.

NATIONAL KIDS TO PARKS DAY

EVENTS

National Kids to Parks Day at Rivers Edge North

Kids to Parks Day (KTP) is an annual nationwide day of play organized by National

Park Trust (NPT). The goal is to engage kids across the country with parks and public lands to promote environmental stewardship and healthy outdoor living. At the heart of the initiative is Buddy Bison, NPT’s mascot whose message to children and their families is to “Explore outdoors, the parks are yours!”

Equally important, the national grassroots initiative has been designed to help teachers, especially those in underserved communities, to introduce parks and public lands to their students and their families. KTP Day offers students from urban and rural communities the opportunity to participate in hands-on environmental education, while providing health and wellness through outdoor recreation.

26 SPRING 2014

For the 3rd year running, Roanoke Parks and Recreation will host our own celebration of Kids to Parks Day. This fun-filled event will be absolutely free and have a variety of kid-friendly activities including inflatable bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, various games and more.
