ROANOKE STAR SOCCER COVER STORY

PETS OWNERS! The new Thrasher Dog Park is the 2nd K-9 playground in the city and has a full acre of space for dogs and pet owners to enjoy.

IT’s A DOG’S LIFE AT THRASHER both parks now feature mutt-mitt stations, a pet fountain and designated areas for small and large dogs. Lindsay and her dog, Maia, certainly enjoy the vast areas these dog parks bring to city dwellers here in Roanoke. “We live in an apartment downtown and my puppy is full of energy and loves to run much faster than I can!” She’s fond of the overall benefits of a local park for pet owners. “The Highland Dog Park is a great space, convenient to downtown, where Maia can let loose – both figuratively and literally.”

7

“As soon as we take a right onto Highland Avenue, the squeals of excitement can be heard with her hanging halfway out of the window.” – Ryan talking about his SPCA rescue dog, Santi.

www.PlayRoanoke.com

Not just for pooches, the Highland Dog Park has become a common social ground for dogs and humans. Tina and her dog Mazie visit the park about 3 times a month. “Not only does Highland allow dogs to use their socialization skills and meet and play with other dogs, it also allows us ‘humans’ time to interact and get to know our neighbors,” she said. The good news is that Highland is not the only place for human and K-9 interactions. In April, the City opened a second dog park at Thrasher Park. This park was a direct response to citizens requesting an additional park on the north side of the city. In the midst of the new construction, the Highland location was also renovated by bringing the large dog area off the hillside and down to a more level area. A small portion of the previous large dog area, at the base of the hill, will be retained and used as the new small dog area while the previous small dog entrance will become the large dog entrance. All of this work is meant to help make the dog park more sustainable and easier to reseed in the spring and fall months. According to Steve Buschor, Director of Parks and Recreation, the new Thrasher locale will have plenty of room for dog owners to mingle. “The Thrasher Dog Park is very expansive and features one full acre of fenced-in, off-leash fun for local dog owners.” He also confirmed that

Learners at this level should be able to do all strokes successfully, and be able to switch between strokes on command. They should be able to dive effectively, and swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping.

2015 Swim Lesson Schedule

Swim Lessons

Roanoke Parks and Recreation will offer evening swim lessons to participants, ages 6 months through adults, at Fallon Park Pools this summer. Swim lessons are based off of the Virginia Swims core curriculum. Please refer to the dates below for class descriptions and session schedules. Each course includes six 35-minute sessions. Participants must pre-register one week prior to start date. A $25.00 registration fee per participant is due at the time of registration. Parent/Child (Baby and Me, Toddler and Me, Preschooler and Me): (6 months–4 years). Instructor works closely with parent in helping infant/toddler develop basic water skills, including water adjustment, safety, and experiencing supported movement through the water. Parents/guardian must participate in each class. Children must wear swimmer diapers. Preschool Aquatics: (4–6) This is the first time that a child is going to be in the water without a parent or guardian. Skills introduced include water adjustment, breath control, underwater exploration, water safety and swimming movements on front and back. An excellent class for children who have little or no previous water experience. Children should be emotionally ready to separate from parent. Parents are requested to watch while sitting on the pool deck. Swimming 1: (6+) This course is designed to orient participants to the aquatic environment. Instruction includes basic breath control, supported kicking on the front and back, familiarization with arm/leg action for front crawl and safety skills. No experience is necessary.

SUMMER 2015

By: Wil Cleaveland It’s a truly exciting time for Roanoke’s racing community, as the city plans to add a third event to the growing Roanoke Triumph multi-sport race series: a runswim-run competition dubbed the Splash & Dash. The race will be Roanoke’s very first aquathlon, and it’s a USA Triathlon sanctioned event to boot! The competition will be held on August 15, and it will start racers off with a 2.5k run down the Lick Run Greenway, followed by 700 meter swim and conclude with another 2.5k run back up the greenway. The Splash & Dash will provide a great chance for racers to experience one of the hidden gems of Roanoke’s park system, Washington Park. Aside from the running portions of the race that follow the greenway, the whole event is centered around the park’s scenic backdrop. The Splash & Dash aquathlon is the second

installment of the three-race Roanoke Triumph series that spans the whole year. Before the Splash and Dash, the series will launch into full swing with the Off the Rails sprint triathlon on May 30 and the On the Trails off-road duathlon wraps things up on November 15. “The Splash & Dash aquathlon joins Off the Rails and On the Trails in the continually-growing Roanoke Triumph race series,” says Michael Clark. “We’re thrilled to give multi-sport race enthusiasts one more chance to get out and explore the Roanoke parks system through competition.” Furthermore, the Roanoke Parks and Recreation department has launched a whole new micro site, RaceRoanoke.com, to cross-promote the exciting races happening in the area. “The reason we developed RaceRoaoke.com is

SPLASH AND DASH

TRIFECTA! Participate in all three multi-sport events and you will receive a unique 3-piece group of finisher medals

because we’ve gained a lot more races over the past few years, and we really needed a new platform to get the word out,” says Joe Hanning, Marketing & Outreach Coordinator for the department. “RaceRoanoke.com lets us put all of our races on one site and market them all together. It helps racers find events they may not have discovered otherwise.” Local racers can use the site to stay up-to-date on any competitions happening in the area at any given time. From events like the infamous Wednesday Night Disco mountain bike races on Mill Mountain to the annual Gallup 4 the Greenways, RaceRoanoke.com is the new hub for all things racing in the Valley. The Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation is excited to gear up the area’s racing community. Big Lick Entertainment is partnering with Total Action for Progress (TAP) to create the first ever TAP Hope Revolution.

20 SUMMER 2015

By: Stephanie Long Cooking out on the grill, relaxing on the porch, and living in your flip flops… there’s not much better than summer! And after the winter we’ve had, we wouldn’t be surprised if your car has been packed since February for that beach trip you planned while you were snowed in. However, be sure to keep your July 4th open because big things are happening in Roanoke that we’d hate for you to miss. What better way to celebrate America’s Independence Day than with a revolution? This July 4th, Big Lick Entertainment is partnering with Total Action for Progress (TAP) to create the first ever TAP Hope Revolution. This “Freedom Fest” is being held at Elmwood Park and includes something for everyone. There will be a kids’ zone, food, beer, education, vendors and much more. Once you’ve gained your fill of eating, drinking, shopping and playing, the real fun begins. The fireworks

will start early with a country music jam to carry you into the evening. The bands that have been announced thus far are The Brothers Osbourne and Old Dominion with more acts to come. Both bands are primarily country with some rock influences, so even the pickiest of music fans can appreciate and sway along to these laid-back artists. If you’re itching for a preview, you can listen to some of the bands’ music at the TAP Hope Revolution website. Now, we know what you’re thinking—could this day get any better? The answer to that is yes. Not only will you be enjoying all of the food, drinks and shopping that downtown Roanoke has to offer and finishing it up with some great music, but you’ll also be helping your community in the process. All of the proceeds from tickets sold for this event go straight to TAP. In case you didn’t know, TAP is a non-profit organization that

4TH OF JULY

FIREWORKS

focuses on education, career development, housing solutions and economic development for the Roanoke Valley. The money you spend for this event will go right back into strengthening Roanoke as a community. According to the event website, “The term ‘Hope Revolution’ is an igniter, a response and a call to action to live your life with HOPE, to support those in need in your community.” Purchase your tickets now at the TAP Hope Revolution website for $25 to ensure yourself a front row seat to this exciting event. Speaking of igniting, what July 4th would be complete without some fireworks? Play Roanoke invites you to end your night by enjoying the fireworks that will be set off from River’s Edge Sports Complex. This wonderful display will begin around 9:30 PM and is sure to be the perfect endcap to your day. While it looks like we already have you covered for the day, be sure to keep tabs on the TAP Hope Revolution website and Facebook page regularly for more band announcements. Also, be sure to check the Play Roanoke Facebook page; we are planning even more outdoor fun to celebrate America’s birthday. We look forward to seeing you all out there!

lookout for new playgrounds at Huff Lane, Washington, Lakewood, Sunrise, Golden, Melrose, Bowman, SMITH, and Perry Parks. in addition to elmwood and highland parks. Run, climb, jump, spin and slide! With a new plan in place for 2015, Roanoke is the place to be if your kids are connoisseurs of playground fun. This past winter, the City teamed up with the Roanoke City Public Schools to bring a brand new playground to Highland Park that will directly benefit the school kids across the street, but the fun doesn’t stop at Highland. According to Steve Buschor, Roanoke’s Director of Parks and Recreation, there are bigger plans underway. “Our goal is to renovate upwards of 10 neighborhood playgrounds by early next year,” stated Buschor. The remaining parks that have playgrounds scheduled for a revamping or installation include: Huff Lane, Washington, Lakewood, Sunrise, Golden, Melrose, Bowman, Smith, and Perry. From the outside, these vibrant colorful new play areas may appear to be simple in thought but according to Daniel Dart, Parks and Recreation’s Landscape Architect who is leading the charge on these renovations, there’s more to it than what we see at first glance. “What you’re seeing is parks and recreation’s commitment to promoting inclusivity amongst different ages

and abilities manifest itself in the community.” Over the past several years the parks and recreation department has made it a goal to provide more inclusive amenities. Good design doesn’t exclude any specific group from participating in any given experience. Some parks and playgrounds will be more inclusive than others but every playground will provide unique opportunities you won’t be able to find elsewhere. These playgrounds will serve every age and ability from toddlers to teens to the active adult and the retirement generation. Every area is designed to stimulate all the senses and promote child development through a variety of cognitive and physical challenges. Bold colors, sights and sounds, the scent of aromatic vegetation, and the socially inclusive nature of varying accessible elements come together to create a truly unique play experience. “We are looking to create a playground that will be considered multi-generational in nature and truly inclusive of all ages and abilities” stated Mr. Dart. You may be asking; what does inclusive play look like? Inclusive play takes many forms but generally they appear as

play amenities that require multiple children working together to operate at full capacity. For instance Countryside Park has an Aero Glider, which can function slightly with one person, but becomes something else entirely when a whole group of kids is helping sway it back and forth. Something you may be seeing more of in the future is outdoor gaming systems such as those at Countryside. This type of amenity has the unique ability to draw people of all ages and abilities into one space to interact in a way that may not normally happen in an everyday setting. Not only is the parks and recreation department creating inclusive playgrounds they are also creating a one-of-a-kind playground in Elmwood Park: A Peter Pan inspired playground! This will be the city’s first themed playground and is a joint venture between parks and recreation, libraries and Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital. According to Daniel “It is our hope that the Peter Pan themed playground will further the link between the park and library; in turn that will help foster literacy, inspire imaginative play and boost the overall health of children in the valley.” Now kids can imagine themselves as Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Wendy or the Lost Boys. Just beware of the croc!

100 MILER KIDS COVER STORY

A “Little” MOTIVATION By: Heather Chilton

were also getting closer and closer to their goal of completing 100 miles in 100 days. Even after the Roanoke 100 Miler was complete, the students at CYP are continuing their exercise routine. Those who did not reach their goal of 100 miles still had the opportunity to complete it after the event was over. “This sort of activity allows the younger generation to understand perseverance and the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle,” mentioned LeeAnn Reich, Executive Director of the Community Youth Program. Take this as a source of motivation: no matter how small you may be, you can accomplish big things.

Though 100 miles (or more) may seem like a large task for some, the kids at the Community Youth Program (CYP) have made it look easy. 100 days. 100 miles. That was their goal. Every day, from Jan. 7 to April 15, the kids at CYP would gather to rack up miles for the Roanoke 100 Miler. The 100 Miler is Parks and Recreation’s active-living campaign that challenges participants to complete 100 miles or more in 100 days. Participants can run, walk, bike – the options are endless. If you’re more into workout videos or other activities, consistent exercises for 10-20 minutes will get you one mile. While most 100 Miler participants were hitting the treadmill or greenway for miles, the Community Youth Program aimed for a more unconventional way to add miles to their tracking sheets. In the window of the program facility, students could see dozens of multi-colored dots with exercises written on them. Activities ranged from dancing to running in place, frog hopping, and even burpees. The completion of eight exercises equaled one mile. Some found that the snowy weather put a halt to their normal 100 Miler routine, but for the kids at the Community Youth Program, it was an opportunity. One of the rules of the Roanoke 100 Miler is no matter what human-powered activity you choose to do, it must be outside of your regular daily routine (e.g., walking from your car to the office doesn’t count). Sure enough, snowball fights were outside of their normal routine. While students were running rampantly through the snowball fight battle zone and chucking snowballs at one another, they
