ROBERT RUSHFORD MELBOURNE
Australia’s sins
During the early 1900’s Australia believed in policies that today are shunned. The views held then were based around what was believed to be the best outcome for our children, the children of Australia’s future. No thought of the human grief around these policies was considered at that time. The rules of the day revolved around removing a child/children from a parent/s.
The stolen generation is a blight on our history, but another sin of that period and much less spoken of, is the adoption policy in place around women having children out of wedlock.
The process back then was heartless and cold. Imagine after enduring hours of labor and finally giving birth that the child of a union out of wedlock could mercilessly be snatched from the bosom of the mother. Often the mother did not get to hold the child. She often did not get to even see the child. The emotional scars to these mothers was often carried with them to the grave. The guilt weighed heavy in their hearts. It was a secret not discussed. A secret for only them to bear.
Robert Rushford dealt with numerous cases from the era of the Stolen Generation and the Forced Adoption policy. His role within the Catholic Church, after graduating with a degree in Social Work, was to unite families. In many cases families had to be “taught” how to adapt after this trauma had infected. Today, we accept the term PTSD. In the 1980’s the condition was still under review. People in crisis often turn to dysfunctional l behaviour - alcohol, drugs, sex, crime, anger.
Robert Rushford’s early days in the system enlightened him, he understands we are all responsible to each other, and if one person can make a difference to one person’s life then we have achieved a purpose.
Today - Robert works as a corporate adviser, RMM Advisory, however his enormous heart sees him supporting many families who are trying to find their way - from Drug and Alcohol Addiction. Broken Ladder is a referral service he has set up, assisting those, for whom life isn’t working.
