Jeff Hooper Hal David

is one of my favourite singers. His rendition of “Windows of the World” is new and fresh, and wonderful! Hal David

When Jeff met Steve Waterman, a prolific British jazz trumpet player, composer and arranger, the chemistry was clear and a musical partnership set. Together they have created a stunning jazz presentation, blending perfectly some of the finest jazz players in the UK with a unique vocal talent. This is an album of variety, energy and style. Steve Waterman's arrangements take the already beautiful melodies to new heights. Mix this with incomparable jazz soloists, and the result is 'A Passing Glance'.

Steve Waterman is a man blessed with rare gifts; musicality, patience, understanding, and ability to write arrangements so close to what I had in mind (but found great difficulty expressing) and then taking them way beyond my expectations. Oh, and he’s a world class jazz trumpeter too, Thank you Steve! Although this CD has my name on the top, it is a collaboration of many talented people, all of whom left their mark. The band blew me away, often bringing me to near silence in the vocal booth. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks for the true belief, support, and friendship of Derek Lawton. The marvellous ears and energy of our sound engineer Paul Nickson, the endless supply of honey and lemon from Dick Hammett and the experience and advice of David Hays at Mainstem. And last but not least, I bless the unconditional love, understanding and support from my three girls who I adore. Dawn, Paula and Alicia – this is for you!

Jeff explains 'A Passing Glance'. The songs I’ve chosen are personal to me; they bring back happy and emotive memories. Brownie was King (Jordu) - The joyous ecstasy on my first hearing of the genius, Clifford Brown’s, trumpet playing. The Windows of the World - One of my favourite Bacharach/ David songs - Scott Walker. My continued friendship and working relationship with the lyrical legend, Hal David. Pure Imagination - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – my daughters Paula and Alicia The way she makes me feel - A master class in song writing. Stella by Starlight - Maynard Ferguson’s fantastic arrangement, a Big Band blast – my favourite Big Band! Oh Lori - Scorching 1970’s summers, the beach and motor bikes! I would like to dedicate this for our friend Lorraine. A Waltz for Dawn (A Passing Glance) - Steve Waterman’s lovely melody, reminded me of meeting the woman I would later marry - my beautiful Dawn. The lady wants to know - Michael Franks classic, my wife, wine, relaxing holidays. Aja - My first Steely Dan album – The Hooper household's favourite band, and ongoing worship of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. You must believe in spring - Bill Evans mesmerising piano playing, my appreciation of Michele Legrand - The Bergman’s beautiful songs. Spain - A wake up call in my early days of learning, there’s so much more music out there than I thought! Ongoing adoration of Al Jarreau and Chick Corea.

I was totally blown away with this CD. An intelligent and challenging choice of songs, played by the cream of the UK jazz scene. I especially loved the original lyrics written by Jeff, who sings with depth and passion throughout. His vocal range is stunning, and he swings too! A real treat. Claire Martin
