Welcome to Conference Welcome to Cardiff! Croeso i Gaerdydd! How fantastic to be welcoming so many of you to the 75th Federation Conference of Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland. I am delighted that we also have representatives from all Federations, as well as Soroptimist International, and together we can start a year of celebrations for our 75th Anniversary. Our conference theme, Horizons Sing : Gorwelion yn Canu, captures our focus on the future, whilst giving us the opportunity to look back at the firm foundations on which our Federation is built. 2009 is indeed a landmark year for our Federation as we celebrate our 75th year. At our Annual General Meeting I will introduce our Federation Management Committee and our Federation Executive Board. It will be a busy meeting – let’s have healthy and focused debate whilst respecting each other’s differing opinions. We have a varied and interesting programme with something for everyone. Our keynote speakers, Chris Moon MBE, Ian Woodall and Christina Lamb, each have an inspiring story to tell which will lift your spirit. A particular highlight will be the presentations from our own members, as well as from each of the other Federations and International President Hanne – we’ll be stimulated and motivated as we find out about the many and varied activities across the world. Bras in the Bay offers us a platform for publicity as well as enabling us to support women in Africa – let’s make sure Soroptimists make a big splash! A sparkling gala banquet and Change of Insignia ceremony will bring the conference to a close and will launch us into a sparkling future.

Parts of the Conference, both working sessions and social activities, will be filmed by our own film crew as part of the footage for the new SIGBI DVD. This will be done as discreetly as possible and we hope it will not in any way inhibit your enjoyment of Conference.

75th Federation Conference : Horizons Sing

This former Army officer with operational experience worked for a charity clearing landmines in Asia and Africa. He is one of the few westerners to have survived kidnap by the Khmer Rouge guerrillas in Cambodia. Two years later in 1995 he was blown up in a remote minefield in East Africa. He was walking in a supposedly cleared area in Mozambique when the blast resulted in the loss of his lower right arm and leg. Doctors say he survived against the odds due to his determination and fitness. Within a year of leaving hospital he successfully completed the London Marathon and a Masters Degree in Security Management. He has done numerous marathons and many of the world’s toughest ultra marathons including the Great Sahara Run and Badwater, the 135-mile continuous ultra through Death Valley to the mountains. He has taken parties to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and run the length of Cambodia to raise funds for charities assisting the disabled. He has written books, appeared numerous times in the media and, most importantly, used his experience to understand and illustrate the process of achievement. Chris Moon walks the talk and challenges the concept of limitation.

Ian Woodall As the first rays of dawn crept across the Tibetan plateau, Ian Woodall stepped onto the summit of Mount Everest and into history, one of a select few to have climbed the world’s highest mountain by both its north and south sides. During his first ascent from the south in 1996, Ian and his team were trapped in the killer storm described in John Krakauer’s best seller Into Thin Air. They were the closest of any team to those stranded and dying in the storm. In its aftermath they retreated to base camp.While other teams were packing up to leave they chose to try again, finally reaching the summit as the only team left on the mountain.

Christina Lamb Christina Lamb is an award-winning journalist who, since graduating from Oxford, has been an inveterate traveller, working for the Financial Times in Pakistan and Brazil and as a correspondent for the Sunday Times in South Africa. She is a Nieman fellow at Harvard University and also a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. Her works include The Africa House and The Sewing Circles of Herat. In 2007 Christina Lamb was named Foreign Correspondent of the Year in the British Press Awards and the BBC What The Papers Say awards, the second time she has won both of these. She is currently Foreign Correspondent for the Sunday Times and lives with her husband and son in London.

Bras in the Bay Oxfam and Soroptimist International have been working together since 2007, with wonderful results. Now we are helping women in Africa through our Bras in the Bay initiative. The bras we collect will be sent to Wastesaver, Oxfam’s textile recycling facility in Huddersfield. From Wastesaver, bales of donated clothing and bras are sent to Senegal where Oxfam has established a project called Frip Ethique. The goal of the project is to create a social enterprise in Senegal for the import and onward sale of second hand clothing in order to benefit women and men in poor urban and rural communities. The project aims to provide employment and improved livelihoods by training people, particularly women, in sorting clothing, distribution, trading and business skills. In Senegal there is a second hand clothing consumer market from all social groups in the country and the sector generates more jobs per sale than new clothing. Second hand bras are a valuable commodity and British bras are seen as very high quality and are much sought after. The project also aims to create a model of ethical trading for the second hand clothing sector that could be replicated in the future. Bras in the Bay once again sees Soroptimist International and Oxfam working together, taking unwanted bras on this journey to Senegal!

Two years later while attempting the north side of Everest Ian stopped only a few hundred metres from the summit to try and help a dying American climber. The woman’s first words were ‘don’t leave me’.Yet Ian eventually had to leave her to secure the safety of his own team. Using the power of emotional storytelling, Ian will bring the triumphs and tragedies of climbing Mount Everest directly to us, showing how the insights gained on the mountain can enhance our Personal Inspiration and Practical Leadership Skills.

Cathy Standiford President, Soroptimist International of the Americas Cathy Standiford is a member of Soroptimist International of Garden Grove, in Garden Grove, California. A Soroptimist since 1989, Cathy has held several leadership positions at various levels of the organization, including club president; region governor and parliamentarian; federation program council; and SI public relations liaison. Formerly the assistant manager of the City of Santa Ana, Cathy is also a member of the Preparing the Next Generation Task Force for the League of California Cities and the St. Anselm of Canterbury Episcopal Church.

Eliane Lagasse President, Soroptimist International of Europe Born in Ghent, Belgium, Eliane is married with two daughters and one granddaughter. She is Chief of the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology of St Elisabeth Hospital in Zottegem, Belgium and serves on several committees on deontology and ethics. Eliane’s theme for her biennium is Safe Water for a Safe Life. Soroptimism has been part of her life since a child - her mother has been a member of SI Ghent since 1968. In 1988, Eliane became the founding president of a new club, SI Zuid Oost Vlaanderen. Her interest in Soroptimism and the impact it could have on the lives of women and children led her to work for the Belgian Union as Union Programme Coordinator for Health, then Governor, and Union President – and is now President of the European Federation.

Dawn Marie Lemonds Soroptimist International Programme Director Dawn Marie Lemonds of Tustin, California is a member of SI Newport Harbor, California. A Soroptimist since 1982, Dawn Marie has served the organisation in various capacities, including Federation Director, Desert Coast Region Governor and Club President. An employee of the state of California for more than 30 years, Dawn Marie is the Director of the South Coast Regional Project which finds and coordinates services for people who are developmentally disabled and are leaving the state institution. She is also an active volunteer with Race for the Cure,Vice Chair of American Association for Mental Retardation, Region II, and Board Member of the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter.

Hanne Jensbo President, Soroptimist International A member of S.I. Aarhus in Denmark since 1984, Hanne Jensbo took office as International President of Soroptimist International on 4 August 2009. A lawyer by profession with her own law company until 2008, Hanne is now chairman and volunteer in a “Woman’s House in Aarhus” where around 70 women of 20 different nationalities meet each week to have a little time for themselves and build a network with other women. Hanne’s personal motto for her two years as President is “Action Speaks Louder than Words”. The world needs action and not rhetoric, and she calls on all Soroptimists to pursue the UN Millennium Development Goals and gender perspectives in their service work. Hanne encourages every Soroptimist to be an ambassador for Soroptimist International and to use their international network and continue their good work towards empowering women through awareness, advocacy and action.

Yvonne Machuk Convention Chair, 19th Soroptimist International Convention Montreal 2011 Soroptimist International of the Americas is looking forward to welcoming delegates to the 19th Soroptimist International Convention in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 10 – 14 July 2011. Through the theme of “Women Leading a Civil Society”, we will explore ways to improve the lives of women and girls around the world. Please join us for inspiring speakers, informative workshops and enjoyable social events that will give you opportunities to rekindle the flame within to continue the significant work of Soroptimism. Alison Sutherland Soroptimist International Liaison for Project SIerra SI’s Quadrennial Project 2007 - 2011, Project SIerra: a Family and a Future, was launched at the SI Convention in July 2007. The project supports women caring for children in extreme poverty and provides a caring, secure family home for children who are alone or at risk of abandonment. The project location is Sierra Leone, West Africa. Our project partner is Hope and Homes for Children. Alison has been SI Liaison for Project SIerra since 2007. She joined SI Central & SW London in 1993 and transferred to SI Freetown this year when she moved to Sierra Leone to work as Adviser for the Sierra Leone Government Ministry on Internal Affairs, Local Government & Rural Development. She has previously worked as an international election observer and legal adviser on local government. Glynn Rankin Director of Legal Services, UK Human Trafficking Centre Glynn Rankin was called to the bar, by middle temple, in 1983 and received his MBA from the University of Bradford Management School. He has been a prosecutor for over twenty years, holding a number of senior positions within the Crown Prosecution Service. Glynn was seconded to REFLEX, a multi-agency taskforce, in 2004, where he specialised in serious and organised immigration crime. He has experience in dealing with cases involving human trafficking, people smuggling, labour exploitation and related passport and identity theft offences. Glynn was a member of the Operation Pentameter team, advising and training law enforcement, governmental and non-governmental agencies, in legal and procedural aspects of trafficking. Glynn continues to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service policy department, especially in relation to trafficking and victim care policies. Glynn is currently on secondment to the United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre and is their Head of Legal Services.

Euphor is a vibrant euphonium quartet regularly performing recitals and master classes, as well as outreach work for Live Music Now. 2008 saw the release of their debut CD Euphor, and the quartet successfully represented the UK at the festival of Low Brass in Luxembourg and the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Ohio, America. Cwmni Dawns Werin Caerdydd – Cardiff Folk Dance Company The official Welsh folk dance team of Cardiff, Cwmni Dawns Werin Caerdydd has been entertaining and educating people in Welsh music and dance, organising festivals and acting as ambassadors for Wales and the Welsh culture since 1968. The company has travelled far and wide, to the USA, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and most of the countries of the EU. They have participated in festivals and exchange visits with other countries – in Leuven, Belgium, in Asturias in northern Spain, Cork in Eire and Vogelwaarde in the Netherlands – and danced for many celebrities including the Crown Prince of Japan at a festival for Japanese families sponsored by Sony. The company has been successful in national competitions on many occasions, including prizes in the National Eisteddfod of Wales (seven times), the Urdd (Youth) Eisteddfod and the Cerdd Dant Festival of Welsh Singing. Kathryn Rees, Harpist Inspired to play the harp at the age of ten, Kathryn became a National Eisteddfod winner in both solo and ensemble competitions, and a finalist in the Rotary Clubs Young Musician of the Year and Texaco Young Musician of Wales. Since graduating with a BMus (Hons) and a Dip ABRSM in performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Kathryn has performed as a soloist at The Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Houses of Parliament, as well as recording for Welsh language and national television and radio programmes. Following several successful performances for Cor Meibion De Cymru, Kathryn was appointed their Harpist in Residence – a role specially created for her. She has featured on both of their CDs and regularly performs with them across the country. Kathryn entertains and charms her audiences with a wideranging and exciting repertoire which varies from classical Mozart to lively jazz.

Angharad Rees, Soprano At eight Angharad started singing lessons and by the age of twelve knew she wanted to pursue a professional singing career. She studied with International Opera Soprano Patricia O’Neill and sixteen years on Angharad continues to study under her expertise. Having graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a BA honours degree in Performance, Angharad has performed for the Nepalese Royal Family and made her international debut in Hollywood in 2001. She has also performed with Welsh National Opera singer Aled Hall, the Cardiff Philharmonic choir conducted by Alun Guy and in July 2007 performed with West End and Broadway Musical star Peter Karrie.

Euphor – Euphonium Quartet, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Euphor was created in 2006 and consists of Robert Fox, Stephen Kane, Ben Wright and Matthew Jenkins. These four students are from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Euphonium department and are all studying under the guidance of Dr. Robert and his son David Childs.

An extremely talented soprano, Angharad joined the elite of Wales when she was selected to join the Gorsedd of Bards after winning the Towyn Roberts Scholarship at the 2008 National Eisteddfod in Cardiff. Her selection is well deserved as she has already won the Royal National Eisteddfod 11 times, the Urdd Youth National Eisteddfod and Llangollen International Eisteddfod twice, and has been awarded the W. Towyn Roberts, Violet Mary Lewis scholarship, the Richard Harris memorial scholarship and the Pam Weaver scholarship. Cordydd Cordydd was formed in 2000 by a group of friends in Cardiff and has since developed into one of the most successful and talented mixed voice choirs in Wales. They have been successful in numerous competitions, including winning the National Eisteddfod Mixed Voice Choir under 45 voices on 5 occasions, and the Best Choir in last year’s National Eisteddfod This year, they won the Mixed Voice Choir category in S4C’s Cor Cymru and Sioned James, the conductor, went on to win Best Conductor 2009. They also competed for the very first time in Llangollen International Eisteddfod and were delighted to bring home third prize. Cordydd have travelled to Hong Kong and Barbados, and frequently appear on television and radio programmes, such as Sunday Half Hour on Radio 3. Cordydd released their first CD in 2008, of John Rutter’s Requiem with Elin Manahan Thomas – the very first recording in Welsh to be given the composer’s blessing. They celebrate their 10th anniversary next year, with many special events and a workshop with one of the world’s most prominent and successful composers, Eric Whitacre. Diva Delight Diva Delight consists of three professionally trained singers with a passion for performing and a sense of fun. Their innate musicality and beautiful voices, combined with a naughty streak, will have you captivated one minute and collapsing with laughter the next. All three Divas are soloists in their own right and their voices feature on range of different albums including Karl Jenkins’ Requiem, The Music of Basil Harwood , William Vaughans’ The Poisoned Kiss and Quo Vadis conducted by the late Richard Hickox. Skilled arrangers and composers, the Divas have a wide repertoire covering everything from opera and musical theatre, to operetta and jazz - you can be sure they will know your favourite song! Together with some of the most talented young pianists in South Wales, the Divas have performed all over Britain and shared a stage with a variety of world renowned performers ranging from Bryn Terfel, Jose Carreras and Rebecca Evans to Katherine Jenkins and Rod Stewart! Alison, Sylvia, Rhian and tonight’s pianist Nia Edwards, hope you enjoy their performance and have a wonderful evening in their company.
