James Taylor Quartet

We are inviting intermediate to advanced players of trumpet, trombone, sax, bass, piano, guitar, drums and percussion to join us in a series of tutorials and workshops covering ensemble, improvisation and sectional playing.

It’s an ideal forum for those who are teaching (or want to teach) in the jazz idiom either in the classroom or in a big band setting.

The weekend is residential, though day bookings are accepted in some cases. Non-playing partners are welcome - please call for details.

Mornington Lockett has established himself as one of the UK’s leading jazz saxophonists and a firm favourite of ours at at Swansea Jazzland. He came to prominence as a member of Ronnie Scotts Quintet and more recently co led the New Couriers with Martin Drew.

Jim Mullen Organ Trio with Stan Sulzmann Jim Mullen is a truly original voice in contemporary jazz guitar.

His distinctive “thumb” attack on the instrument gives him a unique style and sound on the instrument. Jim’s musical approach encompasses not only a thorough knowledge of jazz, but a wellspring of experience which nods towards blues, soul, funk, rock and traditional Scottish music. H brings an all star band to Swansea which includes saxophonist Stan Sulzmann.

Sarah Ellen Hughes with the Dave Cottle Trio

Sarah has been singing on the London jazz scene since 2006 following three years as the principal vocalist of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), most notably performing at Ronnie Scott’s and The Stables at Wavendon. Sarah has also gained International recognition, and in April 2010 won the International Jazz Singing Competition ‘Jazz Voices’ held in Lithuania.

Led by Swansea saxophonist James Duggan, this youthful band of musicians who are studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music will be playing jazz on the funkier side.

Bridgend Big Band

The Popular Big Band from Bridgend returns to Jazzland, led by musical director Bill Davies.

The band will play from a repertoire of many Big Band favourites.

Osian (saxophone) and Steve’s (trumpet) list of influences is a virtual transcription of the fabled Blue Note Records catalogue from that era. Hard swinging jazz in the 1950s/early 60s hard bop idiom.

Geoff Eales celebrates his 60th birthday with a major UK tour. His New Quintet features saxophonist Ben Wahhorn and Guitarist Chris Orr. Geoff will be a set including funk jazz.

Dylan Howe Quartet

Acclaimed and versatile drummer Dylan Howe leads a modern jazz four piece, playing his original compositions and arrangements of Coltrane, Blue Note and Bowie. The band features the best young players from the London jazz scene: Brandon Allen is a tenor sax player considered by many to be the best in the UK at the moment. Ross Stanley, keyboards, has been nominated for Best Instrumentalist in the London Jazz Awards.

Snake Davis Band

Jazz trombonist Mark Bassey has been described as a superb, witty player whose playing can stretch from the raucous to an exquisite sound and perfect phrasing. Mark is a highly versatile musician who covers all styles from swing to bop and the contemporary.

Snake Davis is well established as one of the UK’s leading Saxophonists. He is in demand from the biggest names on the British Popular music scene, as well as visiting artists from overseas. He has played with the likes of, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan and many more. He has been seen regularly on TV with the Eurythmics and M-People. He played all featured Saxophone and Flute parts - on record and tour - for Lisa Stansfield and M-People.

Karen Sharp with the Dave Cottle Trio

Karen studied at the Royal Northern College and is very much a fan of Dexter Gordon who influenced her playing style. A freelance musician, Karen toured for 3 years with the Humphrey Littleton Band.

Since emerging from the bands of Ray Gelato, Jools Holland, Buddy Guy, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Dick Morrisey and others, this talented Tenor Sax player has stunned the London jazz world. Resident at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, Alex regularly accompanies visiting US stars as well as leading bands under his own name; he is in constant demand!

Bruce Adams with the Dave Cottle Trio

Not only is Bruce one the jazz scene’s most dramatic and stimulating performers, he is also a tremendously affable companion. A band-room with the Glaswegian Mr. Adams present is a happy and riotous place. His stream of jokes, anecdotes, and hilarious observations reflect an early immersion in show-biz, and a keen eye and ear for the many quirks of human nature.

Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Bruce’s longrunning musical partnership with saxophonist Alan Barnes has produced many plaudits and acclaimed recordings.

JJ Wheeler Quintet

JJ Wheeler is a Has recently completed a Jazz degree from the Birmingham Conservatoire. He has performed with the likes of Jean Toussaint, Dave Holland Ensemble, Scott Stroman, Celine Dion and has played venues including Wembley Stadium, The Royal Albert Hall. Richard Cottle and Friends

Back by popular demand! Richard will be playing keyboards, sax, clarinet and maybe even drums! The “Friends” are drawn from musicians Richard has worked and performed with in a professional career in music stretching back over 30 years. Richard has recorded and performed with many top names in the business including David Bowie, Tina Turner, and Mike Oldfield, to name a few.
