1 Sunday Dydd Sul - 18:30 - 22:30 JAZZ SUPPER Jim Mullen with The Dave Cottle Trio

Legendary UK guitarist JIM MULLEN Mamma Mia's Restaurant, Princess Way, Swansea SA1 3LW Tickets Includes a 2 Course Supper selection. Jim Mullen relocated to London in 1969, joined Pete Brown's Piblokto!, and then signed on with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, cementing his credentials in the nascent jazz-rock culture. Stints with Vinegar Joe and Kokomo followed, and in the early 1970s he also collaborated with Duncan and Ball in their blue-eyed funk unit the Average White Band. Via the AWB, Mullen met Dick Morrissey, a veteran of the much-respected jazz-rock vehicle If. In 1977, they teamed as a duo for Up, embracing everything from bop to pop to funk and found favor with listeners on both sides of the jazz-rock dyad via acclaimed efforts such as 1979's Cape Wrath. In all, Morrissey and Mullen co-headlined six albums, which increasingly veered towards the mainstream, but never earned the American commercial foothold that would have vaulted their career to the next level. Tickets available from St James Club every Wednesday. Tickets/Tocynnau £20 or online at www.swanseajazzland.co.uk **JAZZLAND MEMBERS have a £2.50 discount off the full ticket Price. Swansea Jazzland September - December 2017 4 Wednesday Dydd Mercher - 20:30 - 23:00 The 'Clarinet Maestros'

Clarinet duels have frequently been fought by the top players throughout the history of jazz, perhaps not so much a fight, but more in a challenge to mimic, to blend together and maybe out-do each other in terms of ideas, technique, phrasing and stamina. This concert puts together the best in the UK and the best in the USA. Ken Peplowski was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1958. He started playing clarinet and tenor saxophone at school from a very young age, and was soon playing in local stage bands, having been influenced strongly by listening to the great names of the jazz world, in particular Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Jimmy Noone, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims and Sonny Stitt. Julian Stringle was a child prodigy reed player. He was educated at the Latymer School and the London College of Music where he studied Clarinet with Wilf Keeley and Composition with William Lloyd Webber. Julian made his TV debut with Acker Bilk when he was just 14. Tickets Tocynnau £12 : Members Aelodau £9 : Students Myfyrwyr £6

A Fish Tale, which draws on the rich and interesting history of the fishing trade in Grimsby. Barnes teamed up with guitarist Pat McCarthy and poet Josie Moon. Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble

Gilad Atzmon – tenor & soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet Frank Harrison – piano Yaron Stavi – acoustic bass Enzo Zirilli – drums. Marking fifty years without John Coltrane, Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble attempt to reflect upon the beauty of the man’s music. John Coltrane was the most influential tenor saxophonist in jazz history. Whether it is his patented sheets of sound, his rapid-fire improvisations, the advanced harmonic progressions, the sonic impact of the best jazz quartet ever or his lush interpretations of the most beautiful ballads, no aspiring music lover can afford to neglect the music of Trane. But Coltrane is far greater than the sum of his outstanding musical achievements. He was a voice of a generation, an artistic revolutionary spirit, a man who transformed anger into love and plight into a humanist message. Coltrane is for us jazz at its best: an authentic creative wave of constant transformation and innovation. Trane is for us, first and foremost, a spirit.
