The Cigarette Way Since 1969, the dedicated people at Cigarette Racing Team have focused on building the finest high-performance boats the world has ever known. That’s why “Cigarette” has become a generic term for a performance boat. But the truth is there’s nothing like—and never will be anything like—a Cigarette. Our mission? It’s pretty simple: To keep the Cigarette Racing Team smokin’ through the next 40 years, and beyond. There are 115 people working here at Cigarette Racing Team. From lamination to systems rigging, there is no easy job in this plant. Each individual shares the same passion for perfection and performance, and that passion bonds them as a team. If you don’t have that passion, if good enough is, indeed, good enough, then you can’t work here. Accountability on the part of each employee, as well as dedication to the company mission of building truly legendary performance boats is integral to our ongoing success. This unique level of company-wide commitment is matched by our commitment to maintaining excellent relationships with our key vendors, suppliers, and loyal customers. Cigarette Racing Team truly is a family. Each family member shares the same goal. Each family member shares what some might call an obsession, but we call a passion to detail and quality. And yet we all know we can continue to refine our products and construction processes. We continue, as one of our team members said recently, “to build a better boat.”

Never content with the status quo, we will continue to grow the brand. Last fall’s introduction of the wide-body Grand Sport is proof positive of our commitment to moving forward, but we’re far from done. Of course we are not just dedicated to creating new models— we’re heavily invested in improving and upgrading our immaculate plant, which has grown to 150,000 square feet. We are adding skilled employees to our team, and through intensive hands-on training raising their skill levels (after all, there is the way everyone else builds boats, and the way Cigarette Racing Team does). By improving production quality and utilizing advanced engineering, we are constantly raising the bar on our own products. Again, status quo just doesn’t fly here. Our objective has been—and will forever be—to create superior offshore powerboats boats that live up to Cigarette’s unrivaled reputation for performance, dependability, and value. That goal drives us, much as it drove Don Aronow, the founder of this company. In our commitment to this goal, we honor his memory, gain our own sense of accomplishment, and continue to build legendary products. Sincerely, Skip Braver and Neill Hernandez

The 49 Grand Sport takes the name Cigarette to a whole new level. Not only is the new 49 Grand Sport the largest boat ever built at the Cigarette Racing Team factory, it’s the smartest. With its wave-crushing performance in the ocean and top speed of 84 mph, its a true Cigarette that will keep dad happy. In the cockpit, there’s space for eight to 10 people and belowdecks, the cabin looks like a four-star hotel room. That’s sure to please mom and the kids. Finally, with an innovative new exhaust system, it is quieter than any other 1,700hp boat you’ve ever heard. That’ll make your dockside neighbors smile.

“We wanted to build something that would have 6’ of headroom and the amenities that women would like, but would still be a Cigarette,” said Cigarette Racing Team CEO Skip Braver. “The 49 Grand Sport gives us the 10’ beam, the cabin, and the amenities that you don’t’ get with our smaller boats.” It’s also the hottest looking 49’ performance boat you’ve ever seen. Cigarette Racing Team also stepped up technologically to design and build the boat. The 49 Grand Sport was developed in a collaborative effort with Cigarette’s inhouse team and Braver’s friend Peter Hledin, president of Douglas Marine, which builds Skater catamarans. A company that has worked extensively with Boeing Aircraft cut the new model’s tooling on a computernumerically-controlled machine. Once the CNC work was completed, Douglas Marine made the molds for the 49 Grand Sport and then they were shipped to Cigarette headquarters in Opa Locka, Fla. The results are amazing. In addition to having sexy, European lines, the 49 Grand Sport exhibits exceptional craftsmanship. The gelcoat shimmers in the south Florida

sun and the mold work is exceptional. The fit and finish rivals that found on the most expensive custom yachts. On the water, the triple-step bottom design is amazing. Dry weight for the boat is 17,000 pounds and fuel capacity is 400 gallons. This means that when the boat is loaded with people and a good load of gas, it tips the scales at more than 20,000 pounds. With a pair of Mercury Racing HP850 SCis and Dry Sump Six drives, it runs 84 mph, which is damned impressive. Getting on plane couldn’t be easier. Advance the throttles to about 2500 rpm, let the engines catch up and the 49 Grand Sport just levels off. That’s a sign of a smart bottom design. In turns, crank the wheel

and the 49 Grand Sport comes around like a straightbottom 38 Top Gun. I had the chance to take it out in 2’ to 4’ seas with plenty of 6’ holes. Leave the drives trimmed at about neutral and drop the tabs three pins on the indicators. “If you go down to Key West and it’s rough on the outside, you’d be back to Miami in three hours, even in the rough stuff,” laughed Braver. When you get back to the docks, the new exhaust system guarantees that the boat’s looks will be the only thing to turn heads. The 4” diameter stainless-steel exhaust pipes exit the transom and then bend down in the shape of a J or the top half of a question mark. This

allows the water to muffle engine sound when you’re at idle, but once you’re running, the motors can still breathe properly.

ample dry stowage. To starboard is a head with full stand-up shower that will accommodate a 6’ tall adult.

Cockpit amenities aboard the 49 Grand Sport include the thoughtfully laid out dash, power dropout bolsters, spacious aft bench seat, and side jumpers. Cockpit depth is 50”, ensuring that the kids will stay put. Access to maintenance items in the engine compartment is excellent and there are even six fender holders in this area. If you need to top off the trim fluid, the four pumps are in a locker on the transom.

Relax on the twin facing lounges that have super thick 9” cushions. The UltraLeather upholstery is so comfy you’ll fall asleep sitting up. Up front, the forward end of the V-berth is raised so that your head is above your feet. From the performance to the quiet exhaust to the perfect sleeping position, the 49 Grand Sport is the world’s smartest Cigarette.

LEGENDS ARE BUILT,

NOT BORN When Don Aronow left the New Jersey construction industry and came to Florida to build boats, he had a plan--retirement and rest; heal the ulcers he earned in his prior business and spend some quality family time. But men like Aronow don’t retire—they recycle their energies and take on new challenges. As Michael Aronow, Don’s son, recalls in the biography, Don Aronow, The King of Thunderboat Row, ”...designing powerboats was his true love and he couldn’t escape it.” Aronow’s interest in the boat building business was born out of his rapture with powerboat racing. He was sucked into the adrenaline rush of the competition and open water and was dedicated to winning races. To do so, he believed he had to create his own boat, so he set about the task by surrounding himself with the best in the industry. A successful and clever businessman who knew the ins and outs of non-compete contract clauses, he founded Cigarette after he built and sold Formula, Donzi and Magnum Marine, each in the shadow of the other. The string of boat factories along 188th Street in Aventura, Florida became the notorious Thunderboat Row.

Left: Don Aronow poses for a picture at the Cigarette Factory on 188th Street in North Miami Beach

Since he was not to be building boats in 1969— according to his non-compete with the sale of Magnum—Aronow built his first Cigarettes under the name of Cary, with the help of his good friend Elton Cary who built the boats in his Miami Beach facility. A 28’ and a 32’ model were readily produced and Aronow proudly named the boats “The Cigarette,” after a Prohibition era rum smuggler’s boat. The smuggler, known for his high-speed getaways in his “Cigarette” boat, had been a legend in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, Aronow’s hometown. The notoriety held special appeal to

him, so once he was able to formally open his new company and facility, he commemorated his hero by naming his new boat company for the smuggler’s vessel, Cigarette Racing Team. His new Cigarettes were powered by Carl Kiekaefer’s inboard-outboard engines, continuing a long association with the other legend of powerboating and founder of Mercury Marine. The 32’ with 475 hp MerCruisers started the long list of racing championships and records, and at 67.2 mph, the Cigarette was considered fast and won the Long Beach to Ensenada, Mexico race, first time out. Cigarette Racing Team was more than a boat builder, it was a virtual racing machine. Though he personally retired from racing a year later, with every championship title under his belt and all the accolades and adulation as the most celebrated powerboat racer and builder—ever--Aronow’s drive continued in the design and development of new boats. In 1970, he broke the 32’ race boat mold and his famous 32 was purchased by renown racer Vincenzo Balestrieri, who continued to race Cigarettes for

many years. Aronow then focused on a sleek and mean 36’. Touted as the best deep-V ever built, the boat was purchased by Carl Kiekaefer, named Aeromarine for his engine company, and won the Key West World Championship with 475 hp MerCruisers. Aronow then added the 28’ Open Fishing Boat to the line and it became the first production Cigarette, called the “Standard” with 165 hp Mercruisers. As with most of his boats, Aronow always left an option for bigger power. Speed was his aphrodisiac. In 1973 a 28’ SS (Super Sleek) was added, capable of speeds from 50-80 mph. The then Ambassador to China, George Bush, Sr. purchased a 28 SS, calling it Fidelity, beginning a long friendship with Aronow. That same year, a 40’ prototype was built for Roger Penske with 600 hp MerCruisers. Cigarette’s factory on 188th Street became the hang-out for celebrities and Aronow was considered a celebrity himself, the subject of a variety of ads for products ranging from spark plugs to Rolex watches to Hennessey Cognac.

16 II.I

The 35’ Awesome was the next model to go into production at Cigarette and it became the top of the company 1974 charts. King Juan Carlos of Spain ordered one as did King Hussein of Jordan, the Prince of Kuwait, the King of Sweden, Princess Caroline of Monaco and other European royalty. Even ex-President Nixon wanted one and racer Red Adair bought one for racing and one for pleasure. Indianapolis 500 winner Marc Donohue bought another, as did Augie Busch and other corporate tycoons. While speed boating was turning into pleasure boating, Cigarette Racing Team boats kept winning races, racking up titles, speed records and victories in every model. The racing circuit was Cigarette’s proving ground as legendary names like Rock Aoki, Carlo Bonomi, Billy Martin, Tom Gentry and Bob Nordskog chalked up 1976 victories. Nordskog, founder of Powerboat magazine, bought the 35 footer and his American Viking II broke the world straightaway record, clocked at 90.55 mph in the Catalina Speed Trials. That same year, the 40’ “Slingshot” owned by Peter Dean, won 11 straight races breaking all racing records. Gene Lanham and Bob

Magoon also set the Miami to New York record at 22.41.15 in a 40’ Cigarette with twin 500 hp MerCruisers. By 1977, Aronow added a single-engine 20’ Cigarette to the line with Mercury stern drives and a 7’2” beam. A 39’ kevlar raceboat was also added, giving Bob Nordskog’s Powerboat Magazine boat a 95 mph speed with his new 650 hp Nordskog engines. But the real newsmaker in 1977 was the 35’ Mistress, a refined and slender version of the former 35. “She performs like a mistress should,” was Aronow’s description. In addition to the celebrities buying Cigarettes, racing kept the company in the forefront of the industry—despite the fact that Aronow produced no new race boats, in response to his spat with APBA over the calculation of Championship points. In 1978 Billy Martin won eight races with his 35’ and 39’ Cigarettes called Bounty Hunter and Betty Cook shook up the racing world by being the first woman to win the prestigious Cowes-Torquay-Cowes Race in a 36’ Cigarette named Kaama.

But that same year, Aronow felt he needed a break. He had accomplished all he could as a racer, designer, manufacturer and sportsman. He sold Cigarette to Halter Marine, the world’s largest builder of offshore vessels for the oil and gas industries. Though he built another powerboat plant directly across the street, Aronow’s new company, Squadron XII, was allowed to produce only 12 boats per year, by agreement with Halter. But by 1981, Halter offered Aronow the opportunity to take the company back, so he obliged and merged Squadron with Cigarette and kept on winning racing titles, even though Cigarette was competing with Jerry Jacoby and his Hawk engines. In 1982 Jacoby bought Cigarette, but with a strict non-compete clause. Aronow promptly built another plant and experimented successfully with prototype commercial boats, Unlimited Hydroplanes and catamarans. Under the name of USA Racing Team, Aronow’s new company and boat won again as his design of The Blue Thunder powerboat was purchased by U.S. Customs.

By 1984, the competition urge was too strong and Aronow relented to Ben Kramer’s plea to help him build a new deep V. Aronow helped Kramer of Apache Marine build a new boat to compete with Cigarette and Kramer won the next World Open Class Championship. Aronow then turned around and sold USA Racing Team to Apache Marine. But in 1986, a strange turn of events made all the difference. When U.S. Customs got word of the change of ownership in the company, the agency cancelled their order for the new BlueThunders. To save the business, Aronow took Cigarette back for a tidy profit, reinstituted the order for the Blue Thunders and took even more.

Skip Braver, CEO and President and Neill Hernandez, Executive VP and Cigarette veteran put their mark on the brand. For people in the powerboat business, it’s not just about the money, it’s about the competition, the need to build and achieve. Cigarette Racing Team was built upon the reputation of a man who would race through pounding seas, beating his boat and own body until he bled. But the boats never sank and neither did his spirit. The legend continues.

But in 1987, the life of the man who had built Thunderboat Row, was taken on his own street. A hit man, hired by Ben Kramer, may have ended the life of Don Aronow, but not the company he created. The legacy of Cigarette Racing Team is just one of many chapters Aronow wrote in his life, but it is one of the most enduring. In fact, the legend is now reinventing itself as SMOKIN’ MAGAZINE

CIGARETTES THE TITLE OF OLDEST CIGARETTE DEALER IN THE WORLD MAY HAVE NEGATIVE CONNOTATIONS FOR SOME, BUT MARCEL WEARS THIS BADGE OF HONOR WITH PRIDE. 134 CIGARETTES later marcel biales, oWNER of SAINT TROPEZ based sportmer, has sold more CIGARETTES then ANY OTHER DEALER. Marcel established Sportmer in 1962 in the coastal capital of Algiers in the French colony of Algeria. By 1963, however, social strife and turmoil leading to the region's independence, led him to move his business to the burgeonning Meditteranean town of St. Tropez on France's Southern coast.

Quickly, Sportmer, established itself as the premier boat dealer and service center for the vacationing elite and celebrities who had taken to the small town's easy going and sexy summer atmosphere. By 1967, Sportmer had acquired permanent docks in the prime location of the historical port and built a shipyard to sell, store and service the ever

growing fleet of luxury offshore boats and run-abouts. A trip to Florida introduces Marcel to Don Aronow and his Cigarettes. As Marcel describes, "it was a 'coup de foudre' [as if lightning struck me], I was in love". And thus began the romance between Cigarette and Marcel's mediterranean customers. Over 130 Cigarettes later, Marcel's Sportmer is a landmark in the now 眉ber trendy town of Saint Tropez. Each season he rubs elbows with the global jet-setters, celebrities and discrete industrialists who for a few months bask in the warm waters of the C么tes D'Azur. "As one of the "oldest" fixtures on the port of St. Tropez, my reputation has been built on my customer relations and the products I sell and service. Number one is discretion and total dedication to the customer, but just as important is the quality of the products I sell. Cigarette above all is in a class of its own. When a customer purchases a Cigarette from Sportmer, he knows that not only will I stand behind the product, but the entire Cigarette factory in Florida will be there to support him," explains Marcel. Marcel notes that the Cigarette products line has evolved immensly since the Aronow years. "What has changed above all in the powerhouse. High performance marine engines used to be fragile and easily damaged by the in-engine salt water cooling that would rot the mechanics from the inside out. Today, Cigarette uses Mercury Racing engines and they are as bullet proof as they easy to maintain. Having Mercury stand behind the product also comforts the customer that they are purchasing the best performance boat money can buy. Literally, there are boats I sold two years ago that roar like the day they were sold, and my mechanics constantly thank me for the ease of maintenance and repairs."

26 II.I

This marriage made in heaven between Cigarette and Sportmer is most importantly about the personal friendships between Marcel, Skip and Neill. "I know that no matter what happens, both Skip and Neill will assist me with any of my customer's queries." He goes on to cite a particular example. "A couple of years ago, one of my clients had trouble with a broken engine on his boat. He did not want to loose out on any of his summer holidays without the use of his boat. I remember calling Neill in Florida at what must have been eleven o'clock in the evening his time. Neill immediately located a new engine, crated it and delivered it to Miami International Airport, where after a short skip over the Atlantic and a ride through the French countryside later, I received the prized package. By 4 o'clock the next day, the client had a new engine installed and was off for more exhilerating off-shore adventures." As the oldest Cigarette dealership in the world, Sportmer has become part of Cigarette's history. Together, they have grown and seen the world and their product lines evolve, yet through it all it is their pure dedication to service, quality and customer relations that have made them the legends they have now become. So next time you are in St. Tropez, make sure to visit Cigarette's "oldest" family member.

BUILDING A

LEGEND IN 10 STEPS Like a well-rehearsed orchestra, the crew at Cigarette Racing Team tunes up each day under the direction of Maestro, Neill Hernandez. Over 100 men and women take their places at their respective instruments and begin to play in harmony. The sound of buzz saws, sewing machines, welding irons, and electric tools create a serenade that is music to Hernandez’ ears. The tune of custom boats in the making has pulsed in his blood since he was a teen. Foregoing his family’s plans for his college education, Hernandez instead chose on-thejob-training of Cigarette Racing Team, and from an apprentice in the electrical department, he worked his way up to Vice President of Operations. Then, when Skip Braver bought Cigarette, Hernandez took him up on his offer to put his life’s work on the line and he became a partner and Executive VP of Cigarette Racing Team. With the achievement of The American Dream, the melody has become even sweeter. The production of a Cigarette boat is the culmination of many departments working together in unison. As the internal carpentry department begins building seats, gunnels and cabinetry, the upholstery department prepares to cushion them. Lamination, the base of each boat, begins with a smooth, bare mold, waxed with a release agent that allows the hull or deck to be gently pulled from the mold. 28 II.I

The prepared mold is sprayed with a gel coat, which forms the exterior of the boat and the gel coat is then covered with layers of fiberglass coring material, sprayed with hard-drying resin. Each layer is hand-rolled to remove all air bubbles and the boat is built like a multi-layer sandwich of fabric and resins. The fiberglass fabrics are all hand-cut to ensure the proper fit for each boat model, which is numbered to identify it on its passage through the factory. Resins are selected for their quality, strength, durability and appearance, to maintain Cigarette’s reputation as a boat that can withstand rough seas and tough use. Each boat part is then vacuum-bagged to remove any remaining air pockets that could create weaknesses. When the hull, deck or boat section is dried and cured, it is pulled from the mold and weighed. Consistent weight enables the crew to detect any irregularities in the production process. The stringer system, or “backbone” of the boat, is then cut and installed. Bulkheads, the “ribs” of the boat are placed first, in the forward section of the cabin, second, forward of the cockpit, and third, forward of the engines. Each bulkhead is cut specifically for each model of boat from a specially treated strong, lightweight balsa panels, and is then fiberglassed into place for strength. Custom fuel tanks built from 316 aluminum are thru bolted and foamed in place.

The tanks are fitted with Coast Guard approved hoses and hardware to ensure a long life. The hull and deck are then fitted together, bolted and bonded with fiberglass to prevent any separation. The depth of this bond is one of the features that ensure the smooth ride of a Cigarette. The joined hull, deck and all its parts are then moved into the Finishing Department where the surface is sanded to a glassy finish and prepared for paint. Coats of purple dye are painted over the surface to reveal any imperfection in the gel coat. Finely hand sanding and buffing each inch of the boat creates a flawless finish, the ready for paint. Holes are drilled for attachments like cleats, lights, gas fill and vents. Rigging is where the boat takes on its internal workings, from the engines, drives and trim tabs, to the electrical systems and dash boards. The transoms are cut to accommodate the engines and drives and electrical wiring and plumbing systems are run through the gunnels. The dash panels, which are built, painted and assembled in-house, are installed on the console. The prepared console is mounted in the boat and connected—but only after the boat is painted. To insure race rigid standards every wire is crimped, thru-bolted or seamed in place, no push-on terminals are used.

platform for each seat and bolster which is then cushioned to fit the driver. The leather upholstery is custom-matched to the paint and on Cigarette’s exclusively designed in-house embroidery machine, thousands of stitches intricately duplicate paint design, logos or signatures.

An electrical harness is hand-prepared for each boat and every connection is welded for strength and durability. The myriad of colorful wires that are measured and cut resemble a body’s circulatory system and are virtually as complex. “Race rigging” is the painstaking process of concealing wires in conduit and running them at the top of the engine compartment, above the bilge and water line. The solid construction of the boat and rigging installation ensures that the boats running systems can endure the pounding of rough water travel.

The paint process is a time-consuming, but rewarding process and can be done in-house by Cigarette’s own design team and in its state-ofthe-art paint booth, or by independent custom paint designers. Depending on the complexity of the design, paint can take one month or more.

When the cabin installation begins, the detailed work of upholstery joins the individually built dash to create the boat’s unique interior design. A separate carpentry department builds the

After the boat returns from the paint shop, it re-enters the factory for final rigging and assembly. The small parts, engines and interior are all installed by various experts and each boat becomes a buzz of activity. Within 30 days, most boats pass through this final stage, in preparation for sea-trial.

Each boat is tested at least one time to ensure performance and safety. An extensive check list is painstakingly reviewed so even the smallest issue is addressed before the boat is marked as complete. Quality control is a priority at Cigarette and foremen supervise each stage carefully, with a keen eye for consistency, detail and perfection. This quality control extends to the dealer level so each Cigarette customer leaves the showroom satisfied and proud. A Cigarette is not just a boat—it is a handcreated work of art—a mixture of old-world craftsmanship and new-world technology. It is music to your ear and a feast for the eyes.

THUNDER LIGHTNING Does Don Aronow’s ghost roam the empty hallways and garages of Aventura? Do neighbors ever hear a phantom boat engine roar? Does raucous laughter ever filter up through the ventilation systems where the Apache Bar & Grill was located, or the factories of Cigarette and the rest of Aronow’s empire? If you knew Thunderboat Row in its heyday—before real estate magnates made Aventura the high-rise capital of South Florida—when it was Thunder Alley —you have to wonder. Now, with a Magnet School on the waterfront and snow birds landing for the winter, we look back at the string of powerboat factories that Aronow built on 188th Street and see that they were tattered old buildings that had outlived their use and economy. The industry has changed and the demands of technology require more space--and different zoning. The highrise residents didn’t appreciate the smell of resins or the sound of engines testing, but the work that was forged in those factories lives on, as does the saga of the man who built them. How ironic that he met his demise in the same place that he built his reputation. Thunderboat Row was a chapter of Miami and offshore powerboat history and its notoriety was only enhanced by the man who built it, and perished on it. That legend of Thunder Alley may be buried under the concrete of new high rises, but Aronow’s spirit is sustained at the OpaLocka, Florida headquarters of Cigarette Racing Team™. The two-year old factory was built large enough and strong enough to bear the responsibility of ensuring that the legend will live on.

Skip Braver, President and CEO of Cigarette is often quoted as saying, “I didn’t buy a company, I bought a legend.” And he means it. He and Neill Hernandez, limited partner and Executive Vice President, who was an important part of the Cigarette’s post-Aronow era, are dedicated to “making the old man proud.” “The inception of Cigarette was about performance,” says Braver, “We are continuing to build on that reputation and the many championships that Aronow won to earn the #1 brand of ‘The American Offshore Legend.’” “With Skip’s vision and direction, we have been able to add an even higher level of quality and dependability than we were able to offer under previous owners,” says Hernandez, “I had been building boats here for 18 years, imagining what we could be doing and now it is happening!” The duo blend the expertise of business and marketing and boat building and are drawing on the resources and technology, from both inside and outside the industry to take Cigarette to an increasingly higher level. The plant has run smoothly for over

two years and is as clean as an exotic car shop. By bringing services like a metal shop, paint and state-of-the-art embroidery in-house, control, timing and overall efficiency has improved. Performance is more finely tuned as technological improvements are employed, along with considerable engineering cooperative efforts with Mercury Racing. Due to its strategic alliance with the predominant engine builder, all Cigarettes are Mercurypowered and demand for the Super Charged 1075’s, along with the ever-reliable 525’s has soared. The new 600 and 850’s are filling the gap for customers who want to take the next step as they build new boats to replace older models or other brands. “New dealers and new staff members add expertise and territories to Cigarette,” says Braver, “We work to keep the energy and excitement about Cigarette alive. Even though we miss the atmosphere of Thunderboat Row, we have capabilities at our new factory that we could never have created in the city. A memorial T-shirt was created to commemorate the history and says it all: “The Alley May Be Gone, But the Thunder Lives On.” 32 II.I

He is the first one to turn the lights on and the last one to turn the lights off at Cigarette. His energy and drive radiates the moment he walks in the factory. The effort, passion, and dedication he exudes to his staff when building each unique boat is endless. Cigarette Racing Team is proud to honor Pedro Caravera’s 20th anniversary. Pedro’s demanding job at Cigarette consists of a mix of responsibilities. Pedro is the key cog of communication regarding each and every step that is involved when building a Cigarette boat. “I thrive off the satisfaction I receive when working with my team to create an absolute masterpiece,’ says Caravera.

Pedro has successfully mastered all departments within the production process. He manages each and every step within production to ensure that every Cigarette is built to perfection. “Pedro is someone you can trust explicitly and we share the same goal which is to build the best performance boats in the world,” says Hernandez. Pedro carries the pressure of not only supervising each boat to perfection, but also supervises all employees in the factory. His management skills are admirable. “He invests in each employee to make sure the job is done right,” says Hernandez. “I demand my team to bring 100% effort each and every day at Cigarette”, says Caravera. “Each employee is a piece of the puzzle when building our

boats. I feel lucky and proud to be a part of the Cigarette team!” Pedro was introduced to CEO Skip Braver in 2002, following Braver purchasing the company. “Pedro’s drive and ambition for Cigarette is contagious. I value his work ethic, honesty, and am honored to have him as a part of the Cigarette team,” says Braver.

legends are built on people, and bud lorow, though discreet and humble, is one of those people whose entire life has become part of the foundation of the powerboating industry as we know it today.

It’s a beautiful day with azure skies. The temperature is a perfect 75 degrees and the water has a deep serenity about it. As the man advances the throttle, there is a sudden rush of speed and momentum as his boat cuts through the water like a razor blade. This is the superiority that Bud Lorow demands on the water when sea trialing a Cigarette. “I like to test and feel the finished product. It is a feeling of pure satisfaction and fulfillment. There is so much time and detail involved in order to make a Cigarette perform to the level of perfection it is known for,” says Lorow. “There is nothing like the finished product!”

Unquestioned integrity, highly skilled, diligence, and loyalty are some of the many expressions that come to mind when speaking of Bud Lorow. There is something to be said when a company prides itself on having a team of employees that carries this level of talent and dedication. Bud was introduced to CEO Skip Braver in 2000, when he sea trialed Skip’s first Cigarette, a 42’ Tiger-before Skip bought the company. “I recall when I met him that Skip and I shared the same excitement and ambition of perfection.” One year later Lorow came on board at Cigarette. He was charged with properly reviewing and approving the technical components that make up a Cigarette. As each boat completes final rigging and assembly, Lorow

performs a sea trial to ensure ultimate performance and safety. When he is on the water in a Cigarette, he says, “It is a passion of mine to help create the work of art that is a Cigarette and I am proud to be a part if it.” Lorow enjoys fishing and spending time with his family, 21 year-old son John, and wife Zarie.

Buying and customizing a Cigarette isn’t quite as exhilarating as running one—but it’s close.

Buying your

Dream

High-performance boating rocks Dick Laney’s world—that’s a plain fact. In the 20-plus years that the 58-year-old resident of Houston, Texas has been into it, he’s owned just about every brand of productionbuilt performance vehicle you can name. But in February of 2007, Laney, who does most of his boating on 50-mile-long Lake Travis in Austin, finally bought the custom boat he really wanted. “I walked into the Cigarette booth at the Miami Boat Show, sat down with Tim Gallagaher and Skip Braver, and ordered a 39’ Top Gun Unlimited through David Woods of Pier 57,” says Laney. “It was time.” Gallagher, a sales representative for Cigarette chuckles at the recollection. “I could tell Dicky fell in love with that boat when he saw it,” he says. “But about 10 minutes before, I had taken another couple through the boat and they were already sitting down and making arrangements to buy it. David Woods had a 39’ Top Gun Unlimited in production and it hadn’t been painted, so that gave Dicky the opportunity to build a new boat. He just had to have it.”

“I spent the better part of half of that day in the Cigarette booth,” says Laney. What Laney didn’t know—what he couldn’t have known despite purchasing many “custom products” and even after having his fair share of custom homes built—was that his journey to owning a Cigarette was just beginning. Customization is as much a part of the Cigarette mystique as performance. The choices, from interior fabrics to cockpit grab handles, is nearly endless. How much the buyer is involved in the customization process is entirely up to the customer.

The sketches for the paint job were created in consultation with Laney.

In Laney’s case, the level of involvement turned out to be heavy. He worked closely with Gallagher and Grafikworx in North Miami to come up with a paint scheme for the 39-footer with the twin Mercury Racing 700SCi engines he chose for power. A music lover who’s not afraid to blast the tunes, he was keenly aware of what he wanted from his new boat’s stereo. The result? A 2,000-watt monster sound system with docking station for his iPod docking. On the more simple side of things, Laney opted for the two-bolster, three-person straight bench seat (though the bench has individual flip-down armrest layout in the cockpit). Though he ordered custom carpet for and a porcelain head for the boat’s cabin, he kept it free of clutter and breakable galley appliances. Like many Cigarette clients, Laney visited the OpaLocka, Fla., company—in his case three times—to watch his boat being built. During one visit, company executive vice president Neill Hernandez showed him the cleared-coated carbon fiber dash panels that had

38 II.I

been specially made at Laney’s request for his boat. On another trip, Skip Braver, the owner of Cigarette, took him to dinner. In fact, says Laney, Braver made time for him on every visit. “I was just so impressed with the whole process,” says Laney. “And you know, we agreed on a price and that’s what it was when we were finished. They never came back and said, ‘Oh, we have to charge you more for this or that—I call it ‘nickel-and-diming’ you to death. There was none of that.” An early summer sea trial of the new boat was scheduled for Laney’s final trip to Opa-Locka. Unfortunately nasty weather and foul sea conditions prevented Laney and the Cigarette crew from getting out on the 39footer. Equally unfortunate, Laney couldn’t wait a few days for conditions to improve. But even that didn’t prevent Laney from getting exactly what he wanted. Before the 39’ Top Gun was delivered to him in July 2007, he talked extensively

with Cigarette’s Bud Lorow, an expert test driver and setup man. Laney explained that, for him, top speed was completely secondary to overall performance. He didn’t want a boat that took “forever” to come on plane, and he wanted strong acceleration in the midrange.

The sketches for the paint job were created in consultation with

“The process can be as simple or as in-depth as the customer wants it to be,” says Gallagher. “The customer can have input into nearly every aspect of the boat. Or he or she can say something like, “Timmy, I love silver, red and black. Just build me a cool boat.”

“Bud was really easy to work with, and the boat was set up perfectly,” says Laney. “We talked a lot about what I wanted over the phone. And when I got the boat, Bud gave me a lot of pointers on how to drive it.”

Regardless of their depth of involvement, says Gallagher, buyers usually choose a Cigarette for the same reason. “They say, ‘I’ve had everything else, and it’s time for the real thing,” he explains. “They’re ready to spend a little bit more—and get a lot more.”

As set up with the Mercury Racing power and Herring five-blade 34”-pitch propellers, the boat has topped 101 mph, according to Laney. “But that was not nearly as important to me as being able to come right on plane with five or six people in the boat,” he adds.

You’ll get no argument on that statement from Dick Laney. “I am happier with my Cigarette than with anything I’ve ever bought,” he says. “Everything they said they would do when we started the process, that’s the way they delivered it.”

According to Gallagher, about 80 percent of Cigarette’s United-States-based customers actually visit the plant while their boats are being built. (International client visits to the company are understandably less common because of the travel involved, but they are far from rare.) Such visits are encouraged by the team at the company. Yet they are not mandatory—far from it.

Gallagher laughs softly when told of Laney’s comment. Sure, he’s heard it before in his three years with the company, but he never tires of it. “All of the customers we build boats for end up happy like Dickey,” says Gallagher. “They’re poster children for Cigarette.”

Laney.

FISH

Ask most manufacturers to tell you about the best attributes of their center-console boats and they’ll point to the number of rod holders or the size of the fish boxes, but when it comes to the Cigarette 39 Top Fish, the discussion always returns to one highlight— the ride.

“The best thing the boat has is the ride and how well it reacts,” said Cigarette Racing Team Executive Vice President Neill Hernandez. Added longtime Cigarette test driver Bud Lorow, “They’re amazing how well they ride. I’ve been in a lot of fish boats and the ride is incredible.”

The 39 Top Fish was completely new from the keel up when it was introduced at the 2006 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. It took Hernandez and his design team more than two years to get the ride out of the boat that everyone at Cigarette Racing Team wanted. Mercury Racing launched the Verado 350 Sci at the 2008 Miami Beach International Boatshow

Not only did the ride impress the people who built it, designers at Mercury Racing took note of the 39 Top Fish when they were looking for a boat on which to test their new Verado 350 SCi outboards. After putting numerous hours on the motors on the 39 Top Fish in grueling offshore conditions, Cigarette’s longtime test driver Bud Lorow said, “These motors are unbelievable. You will not understand the power and accelaration until your try them for yourself.” Among the technical features of the 2.6liter 350-hp four-stroke engines are the electronically controlled sequential multi-port fuel injection, double-overhead cam design, a charge-air cooler and electronic boost bypass control. With Smart Start, you just turn the key and it turns over on its own and as with any Verado, the 350 SCi runs so quiet, you’ll forget that it’s on. The test program with the 350s is the third such collaborative effort between Cigarette Racing Team and Mercury Racing in recent years. The two companies enjoy a close relationship that provides mutual benefits. Mercury Racing tested its HP1075 SCi and HP850 SCi in a Cigarette product in a similar program before that motor was unveiled at the Miami Boat Show. 74 II.I

75

A key to both of these top-secret efforts was the quality that goes into every Cigarette Racing Team product and a mutual recognition of the value of confidentiality that goes into a testing program for such an eagerly awaited engine like the Verado 350 SCi. Before the folks at Mercury Racing saw the 14,000-pound 39 Top Fish, however, it first had to pass muster with the people who designed and built it. “When you’re running the boat through four or five-footers, most open boats I’ve been in, when they hit, they feel like they’re going to disintegrate,” said Hernandez. Aside from the ride, the other big draw to the 39 Top Fish is the passenger-carrying capability. It has seating for 8 and standing room for plenty

76 II.I

more. Many people who have bought the first 20 are current Cigarette owners who wanted the extra room for their friends. But when it comes to the best thing about the 39 Top Fish, it all comes back to the ride. Lorow said that two sales were instantaneous after passengers took rides in the rough conditions at the 2007 Miami Boat Show. Perhaps Cigarette Racing Team President and CEO Skip Braver summed up the 39 Top Fish with the Verado 350SCis best when he said, “It looks great and runs better. You need to run it yourself.”

Mercedes-AMG SL65 in the shadow of the 2008 39' Top Gun Unlimited

Cigarette Racing Team

Mercedes-AMG A Partnership built on a passion for Performance and Luxury

Cigarette Racing and Mercedes-AMG … While their playgrounds are as different as asphalt and water, their philosophies regarding performance and luxury are one in the same. Each legacy was born from racing and brought to enthusiasts with a passion for performance. While Mercedes-AMG hand assembles each AMG engine, eighty times a year Cigarette Racing hand crafts Performance Boats to tackle open water across the world. It is this shared passion that brought Cigarette Racing and Mercedes-AMG together to form a marketing partnership in 2007. In discussions with many Cigarette owners we quickly found that many were also owners of multiple AMG cars so the partnership felt right for our companies.” Said Skip Braver, CEO of Cigarette Racing. Cigarette Racing is one of only three marketing partners of Mercedes-AMG on the AMG Private Lounge. The AMG Private Lounge is an online community created to allow AMG enthusiasts to share their passions and lifestyle. “The AMG Private Lounge brings together passionate enthusiasts that share similar interests. The addition of the Cigarette Racing partnership extends our AMG family and exposes our owners to the premier speed brokers in the Offshore Performance boat segment.” Said

Mario Spitzner, Head of Branding Marketing and Sales for Mercedes-AMG and based in Affalterbach Germany. Cigarette Racing joins International Watch Company (IWC – Luxury Watches) and Santoni (Italian Luxury Shoes) as the other Private Lounge partners. The first in a series of global joint events took place just prior to the Ft. Lauderdale Boat show in early October 2007. With a large group of AMG Private Lounge members in Miami to

attend a track event held at Homestead Miami Speedway, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to show what Cigarette Racing can do in open water. Cigarette Racing invited all of the AMG guests to join them at local Miami hot spot Big Fish for an afternoon and evening that would delight their visceral senses. As the premier builder of High Performance “V” hull boats, for this event, AMG Private Lounge guests were welcomed by the sound of raw horsepower and the sight of three of Cigarette Racing’s most popular boats. On hand for Private Lounge members to sample was a 39’ Top Fish with four outboard 300 HP Mercury engines , a 39’ Top Gun with twin 700 HP Mercury Racing engines and the company’s flagship 44’ Race Boat “Strength and Honor” powered by twin 1075 HP Mercury Racing engines. In addition to mingling with other AMG owners, Private Lounge members had an opportunity to meet a variety of executives from Cigarette Racing, Mercedes-Benz USA, Mercedes-AMG and the Private Lounge Team. Special guest for this event included Bernd Maylaender, Formula1 Safety Car driver and Reinhold Renger, AMG Chief Driving Instructor and German race driver. As guests waited for their chance to ride in one of the three Cigarettes the mood was one of pure excitement. As each group of guests prepared to leave the dock, onlookers were treated to the thunderous sound of each Cigarette starting it engine. “The sound is just INSANE, I never knew what 2000 HP sounded like until today,” remarked Sebastian Castor “I can feel it in my chest.” As life jackets were handed out, it was clear that this ride was all business. After idling to the bay guests were greeted by near perfect water conditions. A small one foot chop would prove no match for the Cigarette deep V hull. Heading out in the Atlantic, throttles were pushed up and triple digit speeds were the talk of the docks. All too quickly guest found themselves idling back to the dock adjusting their sunglasses and grinning from ear to ear. “It’s like standing up in the back of a convertible, the pressure on your face is unbelievable. I am sure I won’t get rid of this smile for at least an hour,” said Adam Danforth. Alternating between talking about the boats and AMG cars, guests sampled local cuisines and had an opportunity to have pictures taken in front of the Cigarette boats with the Cigarette

Racing models. With more than 40 guests in attendance, the event was an overwhelming success. Skip Braver, CEO of Cigarette Racing said regarding the event, “Never have I seen such synergies between enthusiasts. We were happy to bring a truly unique experience to the AMG Private Lounge and look forward to continuing our involvement with AMG.” Many of the guests commented on the similarities between the AMG and Cigarette brands noting the all- out performance, luxury, and attention to detail shared by both. The event was best summed up by Michael Lawless who said, “I was blown away by the performance of the 44’ Cigarette. All I can say is that it is just like an AMG on water. Now if I could only get my AMG to sound like that Cigarette!!!”

FLORIDA

POWERBOAT CLUB

President

Talks Cigarette When Skip Braver directed his editors to include a segment about Florida Powerboat Club in the first edition of Smokin’ Magazine I was flattered to say the least. Naturally, I was both elated and honored when Skip requested that I make my very own editorial submission to this encore edition of Smokin’ Magazine. Better yet, a contribution with no editorial boundaries…a clean slate so-to-speak. Hmmmm……now that’s a tough one! While brainstorming for the ideal storyline, so many subjects came into play that I was soon mapping out a documentary-style format, complete with dozens of colorful photos from the FPC archives that might fill an entire edition of Smokin’ or perhaps even an inch thick coffee table book. Clearly overkill, but we’ll keep that thought alive, just on simmer for now. Instead, I decided to ask myself some logical questions that any Cigarette owner or performance boat nut might ask a person who’s lifestyle revolves

around organizing poker runs, riding on the coolest powerboats on the planet, and of course, hanging out with people who know how to live life to its fullest. In the context of this editorial, lets just call them Cigarette owners. So, here’s ten questions, more than half of which I have been asked countless times over the years, and another few that I would ask if I were an editor for Smokin’ Magazine.

SM: How long has the Florida Powerboat Club been operating, and how exactly did it get started? Stu: The club had its roots in North Miami Beach, after a poker run was staged as a grand opening promotion for Sunny Isles Marina in July 1991. The owners liked the results and in 1992, I started the Sunny Isles Powerboat Club, which later became Florida Powerboat Club in 1993. SM: Were there many Cigarettes in the club back then, and how does that compare to the current situation? Stu: Actually yes! There were a handful from the inception, including a few Bullets, Café Racers, Top Guns, and even a few retired race boats like BAM. The current situation certainly reflects a wider variety of models, but Cigarette has consistently had top representation on the FPC active membership roster. SM: What was your first impression when you saw a Cigarette for the very first time? STU: I remember the first time like it was yesterday. I grew up in Ontario and one weekend at our local beach near Port Colborne

100 II.I

on Lake Erie, a white Cigarette…I’m guessing a mid-70’s, about thirty five feet, but it looked like it was twice that…cruised up and got a lot of attention. The boat was nestled into the sand in about three feet of water, and I remember that classic Cigarette #1 logo emblazoned on the side. Its crew played in the water and I soon learned they were Americans from Buffalo. The only reason I knew that was that apparently the Cig owner was dating a hot babe from my home town, and this was the beach where all her friends hung out. Go figure. The point is, the guy with the Cig got the hot babe. THAT is a lasting impression! SM: Have you had many opportunities to ride and drive Cigarettes? Which ones to you remember the most? STU: Yes plenty, and I remember them all. Right from the inception of the club, one of the first Cigarette members was a transplanted German named Wolfgang and he had a ’93 Top Gun with Merc 500 efi’s. He loved the club and actually became a partner at the beginning, letting us use the 38 as the club’s official paceboat. Soon after, Venus Swimwear owner & club sponsor Daryle Scott bought a similar brand new Top Gun. Between the two

boats I got my share at the helm, and fell in love with the brand from that point on. Of course, over the years the boats are longer, lighter, faster, and cooler in every way. I’ve had the opportunity to ride on pretty much every model ever built, and even a few chances to drive boats like American Muscle II powered by Mercury Racing 1075’s. In my world, that’s as good as it gets! SM: Do you have a favorite model or any particular Cigarette that has become a favorite? STU: From the WOW perspective, I would say that all the concept boats have been cool…Stealth, Rumrunner, Maximus, and all the American Muscle boats have all been oneoff, unique machines that are head turners at every dock. But I have to say that my favorite model remains the 38 Top Gun. I just like the size, the handling, and the fact that most guys can eventually get into one. Even if it’s an older pre-step Top Gun, it’s a solid hull and you can always re-power and refresh the look to make it your very own without spending half-a million. Not every guy out there has an unlimited budget and not every guy needs triple digit speeds. You can never be embarrassed pulling up to a dock in a mid-nineties Top Gun. These boats are classics.

SM: What about Cigarette owners? Would you say they are passionate about their boats and their powerboating lifestyles? STU: Absolutely! Not a doubt in my mind Cig owners are among the boat owning population that would rather label offshore powerboating as a lifestyle, rather than using the word hobby. Consider some of the outof-state owners and what lengths they go to, just to get to Florida to spend a weekend on the boat or join the club for a poker run to the Keys with FPC. This isn’t like throwing a set of golf clubs in the trunk and whacking the ball around for a few hours. These folks are typically meticulous in the way their boats are maintained, and dedicated to making sure they have year-round fun, even if they have to dig themselves out of a snow bank to get to sunny Florida in the middle of winter. SM: Recently you toured the Cigarette factory and witnessed how they build their product? What stands out the most when recalling that experience? STU: Indeed, we stopped by to shoot the factory for a sponsor segment for our poker run videos and Tim gave us the tour. It was impressive to say the least…very organized, well laid out and CLEAN! Even the air in the glass shop where they do the lay-up seemed as fresh as outdoor air. They have these big huge scrubbers that keep those labor department and environmental dudes off their back. Then there’s the floor in the finishing room…you could eat off it! SM: What about the open, center console sportboats like the Topfish. Are they poker run material?

but in today’s world, everyone still has this obsession with speed. SM: In an interview with Skip Braver, you announced at the recent Fort Lauderdale Show that Cigarette set a new record with the number of Cigs registered for your recent Key West Poker Run. What kind of numbers? STU: It started out at around forty-five Cigarettes on the list about a week for the poker run, then after a couple cancellations and some list tweaking, we got somewhere around forty-two confirmed boats. Of course there are always a handful of non-registered Cigarettes that appear in Key West, and I would say there were about fifty Cigs total buzzing around Key West Harbor on this last event. Out of 215 registered boats, that’s about one out of every five boats, making a record for Cigarette and for the event! SM: In closing, what words of wisdom can you share with poker runners and the readers of this latest edition of SMOKIN’ Magazine? STU: Slow down and smell the mangroves! It’s my poker run version of “Stop & Smell the Roses”. Boats are getting so much faster that many poker runners travel with us to the Florida Keys and don’t even remember what they saw. Half the fun of getting there is the ride down, taking in the scenery, waving at other boaters as we pass by and stopping to take a few snapshots of some playful dolphins. At over 100 mph, none of this is possible. Think about it. More importantly, if we want to keep our sport alive, DO something about it. Just slow down.

STU: Ditto on my last response. The only difference with the open boats like the Topfish, which has a huge cockpit, open bows and plenty of room for a dozen people, the reality is that if you want to cruise at 60 mph, nobody’s going to be comfortable sitting in the front…at least not for long. So while the open boats are certainly fast enough for poker runs with triple and quad Mercury outboards, they might not be quite as popular with the ladies or for crews that exceed four or five people if the captain is a throttle jockey. There are certainly plenty of poker runs where you can keep it under 50 mph and still have fun,

T.E.A.M. S P I R I T When Skip Braver bought Cigarette Racing Team, he made a decision that would have an immediate impact on the company’s future. “We were going to exclusively put Mercury products in our boats,” said Braver, the president and CEO of Cigarette. “Companies are built with strategic relationships with key vendors. Over a third of our cost (per boat) is the powertrain so they are our biggest partner by far.”

Mercury Racing 350 SCi

Braver at times can be as subtle as a Rottweiler, but he’s also as loyal as one and once he established the relationship with Mercury Racing, he knew that sticking with it was the right call. “There are other engines out there, but my attitude is that just because one pretty girl asks you to dance, it doesn’t mean you turn your back on the girl you went with,” he said. Cigarette Racing Team was one of the first companies to be certified for Mercury Racing’s Total Engine Application Management (T.E.A.M.) program to install the Mercury Racing HP 1075 SCi and 850 SCi. Braver also recognizes Mercury Racing’s commitment to backing its product. “Nobody can touch Mercury’s customer service,” he said. “When we have a service problem they respond.”

From the engine side, Fred Kiekhaefer, president of Mercury Racing, has only positive things to say about Cigarette Racing Team. “Skip understands

the value of commitment and what that brings in terms of efficiency and service,” said Kiekhaefer. For Kiekhaefer, the importance of Cigarette’s continued success is about more than the business relationship. “I remember very vividly my dad and Don Aronow trying to figure out how to get Bob Magoon’s boats to run and it’s rewarding to see how well Cigarette has come back under Skip,” said Kiekhaefer. Both sides have found that collaborating on future ventures is mutually beneficial, but neither is giving details. “It would be hard to find anyone easier to work with,” said Kiekhaefer. Added Braver, “Mercury has been extremely fair with us. Its’a great partnership.” Sounds like he made a good decision.
