"This boat was inspired In 1969, Cigarette Racing Team introduced the world to a new era of high performance boating and in turn, coined the phrase “Cigarette Boat.” With its image built around performance, presidents and celebrities from around the world helped Cigarette Racing Team define the industry and concept of high performance boating.

by AMG... not copied by Cigarette"

In 1967, AMG succeeded in taking a Mercedes and making it not better, but different, by ushering in a new era of high- performance Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Though formerly a “tuner” of Mercedes vehicles until fully purchased by Mercedes-Benz in 1999, AMG now leads the full development of high-performance vehicles under the Mercedes-AMG brand. With names like “The Hammer” and “Black Series,” Mercedes-AMG defines the high-performance automotive segment.

Skip Braver, President & CEO Cigarette Racing Team, LLC

Cigarette Racing Team CEO, Skip Braver, has been a fan and owner of AMG vehicles for more than 20 years, so it came as no surprise when Cigarette began courting AMG in 2007 as a lifestyle marketing partner. “We noticed quite early that many Cigarette owners were also AMG customers and that they shared the same passions for performance and luxury,” said Braver. The partnership between Cigarette Racing Team and MercedesAMG was formalized when Cigarette was added to the AMG Private Lounge, an exclusive enthusiast community, joining IWC (International Watch Company,) Santoni (Luxury Shoes) and Bang & Olufsen (Luxury Audio), a synergistic group of luxury products. The partnership between Cigarette and AMG developed into a number of unique events where the respective enthusiasts had the opportunity to experience the attributes that make each brand unique in its own environment. For Cigarette, this meant providing boat rides of over 120 mph in the open ocean while AMG reciprocated with rides at over 160 mph on the main straights of some of the top race tracks in the USA. The success of these joint events had both brands looking for a way to do more together. “Our AMG Private Lounge members rave about the Cigarette Racing events, and it has been really easy to see the overlap between our customer bases. A Cigarette is basically ‘an AMG on the water,’” said Mario Spitzner, Global Director Branding Marketing and Sales for Mercedes-AMG. On the heels of a successful, developing partnership, Cigarette Racing Team looked for a unique way to expand the relationship with AMG. The solution was found early in 2008 after a briefing on a new, iconic model that AMG would be releasing in 2010.

17 IV.I

The vehicle, then code named the “197,” would be the first vehicle fully developed by Mercedes-AMG and would serve as the pinnacle of design and technology for the AMG brand. The design would take cues from the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL including the vertically-opening Gullwing doors. The technology platform would leverage all the Mercedes-AMG racing heritage and serve as a venue to showcase the latest innovations in super car development. The all -ew model would be called the SLS AMG. Inspired by the development and revolutionary use of technology of the SLS AMG, the Cigarette Racing Team set out to create an all-new boat that would set a new bar for high-performance boating. While this new boat would find its stimulus in the SLS AMG, its main purpose would be to serve as a design and technology showcase for Cigarette. The concept of “theme boats” is not new to the boating industry, but Cigarette Racing Team did not take that route for this project. “We wanted to build a boat that was INSPIRED by the DNA that makes an AMG what it is. We did not set out to create a boat that simply looked like an AMG. It was important for us that the boat maintained its Cigarette heritage yet used the AMG inspirations to push us forward. For us, this meant working closely with the team at Mercedes-AMG but not forgetting what makes a Cigarette,” said Braver. Cigarette Racing Team collaborated with AMG on the design and technology of the boat, with multiple AMG employees visiting the Cigarette Racing Team facility. The unmistakable influence of AMG can be seen in every angle of the boat, but the crisp lines that make a Cigarette the top, big-water performer remain intact. “AMG doesn’t allow just anyone to put their logo on a product. Working with the AMG team, we were able to transfer many AMG design and technology philosophies into this boat concept,” said Braver regarding how the AMG influence was applied to this special Cigarette boat. The development of the” Inspired by AMG” Cigarette took over 18 months to complete from the initial concept to the final build. With more than 100 innovations on display in the design, development and rigging, the result is a Cigarette that will once again set the bar for the industry of high-performance boating. Proudly wearing both the Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing Team logos, this collaboration of legends saw the 46’ “Inspired by AMG” Cigarette Boat unveiled along its inspiration, the SLS AMG, at the 2010 Miami International Boat Show on February 11, 2010. The legend continues.

Faster, Stronger, Further & Longer

Showcased in the Cigarette AMG in 1,350-hp dress, Mercury Racing’s twinturbocharged, quad-cam, four-valveper-cylinder engine platform is the most technologically advanced highperformance marine power plant ever built. The accomplishment from clear vision and a clean sheet of paper—make that a blank CAD screen--is amazing! Background... The notion of a quiet, low-emission, turbocharged marine engine that makes 1,350-hp on 92-octane pump gas, requires one-half of the regular service intervals as any engine in its power class and comes right out of the gate with a one-year warranty is revolutionary. That such a turbocharged engine could have no turbo-lag or low-end torque deficiency was unthinkable, but no longer. For the talented team at Mercury Racing in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, out-of-the-box thinking has long been a staple of its engineering diet. To some degree, the folks at Mercury Racing drew their motivation and inspiration for the 1350—and its 1300-hp sibling—from the automobile world. Like automobile engines, high-performance marine engines are facing increasingly stringent exhaust gas emissions regulations and lower noise-level restrictions. Part of the solution in the automotive industry has been smallerdisplacement engines, but that doesn’t work in the high-performance marine realm where the boats keep getting bigger and heavier, and consumer expectations, from world-beating performance to a smaller carbon footprint, run high. Consumers also demand greater durability, reliability and longevity or, as Mercury Racing president Fred Kiekhaefer interprets, “faster, stronger, farther, longer.” By starting with a clean sheet for its 1350 and 1300, Mercury Racing was not constrained by a 1950’s vintage, cast-iron, pushrod, two-valveper-cylinder truck engine, otherwise known as the General Motors “bigblock.” Erik Christiansen, director of Engineering for Mercury Racing, who worked extensively in the development of Mercury Marine’s supercharged four-stroke Verado outboards, headed what was known as the QC4v (shorthand for quad-cam four-valve) project that is the basis for the 1350 and 1300, which has no pushrods.

21 IV.I

“One of the beauties of designing a new engine is you’re not forced to use components that people designed for other applications.” says Christiansen.

and using timed pressure spikes—from exhaust valves opening—in the exhaust manifolds, or “pulse tuning,” the engine keeps both turbines “spooled up” so there is no torque deficit or perceived lag.

“The base 502- and 557-cubic-inch GM big-blocks are excellent platforms for lower power levels, and it is hard to argue with pushrod engines from a cost standpoint,” adds Kiekhaefer. “All of those will stay in our product line, but this quad- cam, four-valve engine platform (QC4v) is something different for a different tier of performance.”

Pulse tuning employed in the 1350 and 1300 is a unique design approach in a four-stroke turbo engine—and Mercury Racing is submitting a patent application—but it is common in Mercury’s OptiMax two-stroke outboards. Because of the pulse-tuned exhaust system, the QC4v engines do not have traditional headers. Rather, they have water-jacketed cast exhaust manifolds coming off the block.

Engine Mechanics 101 At its heart, an engine needs to breathe. Better breathing means higher oxygen density in the engine’s combustion chambers. Port fuel injection adds just the right amount of fuel for the best combustion. The result of the magnitude, shape and timing of this “controlled bomb explosion” is what pushes hard on each piston. All the rest of the machinery is there to convert these blasts into fast-forward motion of the boat with reliability, efficiency and environmental cleanliness. Better breathing starts with the cylinder head. Four valves get more air in the combustion chamber faster and with more control. Four camshafts operate the valves more directly and with less friction. Turbochargers use otherwise-wasted exhaust energy in a turbine, or the “turbo,” to spin an inlet air compressor at the other end of a common shaft. Mercury Racing uses one water-cooled turbocharger—with specially optimized turbine sizing and a computer regulated compressor—on each cylinder bank. The denser, compressed air output is chilled and then flows past the open valves into the head. Simple in concept; simple in execution. But it was the science and physical packaging that challenged the Mercury Racing team. And the team members came up with several innovative solutions to make it possible. By electronically controlling the boost

“These castings were complicated to design because, to create pulse separation, you have to pair the cylinders properly and that changes from side-to-side depending on the firing order,” says Christiansen. “It’s a lot more sophisticated than creating a log manifold.” Electronic engine and transmission control takes serious computing power. From Motorola’s PCM03 to PCM08, none of the company’s propulsion control modules for engines had enough computing power to support all the operations and functions required to make the quad-overhead cam, 32-valve 552-cubic-inch (a tad above 9 liters) a silky-smooth reality from idle to wide-open throttle. But the PCM09 controller, the brain behind the engine’s state-of-the-art electronic management system solved that. “The PCM09 has 10 times the power of the older Motorola controllers,” says Christiansen, who lived and breathed the quad-cam, four-valve development project for more than five years, “And we need all of it. It controls the engine’s electronically-actuated waste gates--in addition to all other engine management functions. This eliminates the torque deficiency commonly associated with turbo-charged engines in marine applications.”

22 IV.I

SMOKIN’ MAGAZINE

But clean-sheet design presents significant challenges. Every part of the entire closed-cooled turbocharged engine had to be designed in-house at Mercury Racing--from its rigid deep-skirt aluminum block and high-efficiency-level aluminum cylinder heads, to the bearing supports, camshafts, high-strength double-box aluminum pistons and rings— made from a proprietary material. Select vendors were chosen to build each of the engine’s parts to Mercury’s specifications—the only “offthe-shelf ” part in the engine (except for a few Mercury components) is a section of the turbo-compressor.

“When you make more power, everything ‘downstream’ has to be able to handle it,” says Christiansen, “We co-developed a stronger hightorque transmission, which compared to other marine transmissions, has more clutch plates, more robust internal components and improved materials.”

Breathe Deeply

Yet there was still more work to do in “downstream” product development. Mercury Racing’s engineers knew there were no Mercury propellers that could handle the power and torque of the QC4v. So they created a line of five- and six-blade CNC propellers that were up to the task.

So what is the primary difference between the 1,300- and 1,350-hp versions of the QC4v? Once again, it comes to breathing. The 1300 uses an ambient-air setup in which the engine pulls cooling air from the engine compartment—like most stern-drive engines—and makes 1,300 hp. With the more-efficient direct-air induction setup, where the engine pulls cooler air from outside the compartment via a precise system that works in concert with the engine hatch, the engine makes 1,350 hp. A pair of the direct-air induction power plants (See “When Giants Join Hands, in this issue of Smokin’) are in the Cigarette AMG. “To use these engines with direct-air induction, the boat has to be designed so that the hatch inlet mates up with the engine inlet. The hatch also has to separate the air from the air-born water that can intrude when you run a boat—especially rough water,” says Kiekhaefer. “There’s a fair amount of complexity in that hatch design, which Cigarette was willing to undertake. For most manufacturers, the extra power gain will not be worth the effort. But that’s why Cigarette is Cigarette.” Both versions of the QC4v platform produce more than 1,300 footpounds of torque, which was simply too much for a Mercury Racing #6 dry-sump drive. “This baby will twist the shafts of a #6 drive,” says Kiekhaefer. “With its tall, ‘mesa shaped’ torque curve, we had to come up with something new.” So, with Mercury Racing engineers, John Leroux and Tom Theisen, leading the charge, the company developed a new drive specifically for the QC4v platform. Called the M8, the dry-sump, high-torque-capacity drive features an all-new gear case, stronger gears, redesigned bearings and beefier supports. In addition, the drive includes an electronically engaged, fully integrated “active anode” to reduce corrosion. For added stability at high speeds, the M8 drive’s skeg is 1 inch longer than that of a #6 drive.

“The M8 drive combines the best of the #6 drive with the best of the NXT1 drive,” says Kiekhaefer, “It’s interesting when the iconic #6 drive becomes your ‘middle-of-the-line’ stern-drive.”

There were product developments upstream as well. “Hey, this thing needs to process digital signals, not cable pokes,” says Kiekhaefer. So a new Zero Effort Digital control—ergonomic, robust and stylish— was created using yet-another clean sheet of paper. With features including one-turn “SmartStart” and automatic throttle syncronization, it is perfect timing for the fully-integrated-system Cigarette AMG concept boat. Clearly much more than an off-the-hook powerhouse, the 1350 is the most efficient engine in its class, according to Mercury Racing. Compared to engines with similar power ratings, it has 15 to 20 percent better fuel economy—that provides more range. Again, it runs on 92octane pump gas. Its mechanical maintenance interval reportedly will be three-times longer than (oil and filters, twice as long as) like-powerrated supercharged engines. “Right out of the box,” says Kiekhaefer, “It meets Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board—that’s less carbon emissions. Plus, being turbocharged, it’s a whole lot quieter than its supercharged counterparts.” “The first time we ran these things in a boat, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up,” says Kiekhaefer. “This engine’s five-year history is one of fits and starts, and those fits and starts came from technical hurdles, the right opportunities and timing, and budget realties. But the goals were never in question. It wasn’t this engine’s ‘time’ until recently. Now—its time has come. We’re prepared to deliver on our promise of faster, stronger, farther and longer.” In short, the 1350 is a brilliant piece of technology that’s being showcased in an equally brilliant boat, the 46-foot Cigarette AMG.

Luca Formilli Fendi Luca Formilli Fendi has a passion for speed— and also for style. At the helm of his custom-built 50’ Cigarette Marauder with triple Mercury Racing 1075 SCi engines, he is a handsome figure in control of his powerful vessel. Whether on the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of his native Italy or enjoying the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Miami, Formilli Fendi is at home, sensing a “culture” for speed. He feels that culture most in the United States and is very comfortable and happy when in Miami, the home of Cigarette Racing Team.

25 IV.I

Formilli Fendi learned the culture of design from his family’s fashion business, and also learned his love of boating from his father. Family outings on a ’70 cruiser were a routine escape from business to the pleasure of the sea, and at the age of 10, young Luca was at the helm under his father’s tutelage; before long, he was at ease—a “natural” at handling a boat. His natural talent evidenced years later while as an AMG Mercedes, Porsche and Austin Martin race car driver in the European GT 3 series, he had the opportunity to go on a fast-boat ride with a fellow racer who gave him the wheel. “You’re good in a boat—why don’t you try boat racing?” asked his friend and now, Formilli Fendi will not go back to car racing—he is enthralled by the power of taking on the sea’s ever-changing course. He of course tackled racing in a Cigarette—a custom-built 43 with a canopy that made its debut on the Powerboat P1 race circuit last year. When good friend and Italian racer, Lino di Biase, arranged for the opportunity to race, Formilli Fendi was enthralled. “It was scary, but I had to do it!” he says. “It was wonderful racing with Lino,” Formilli Fendi enthused, “ And I got to race with John Tomlinson once in Malta and then with Matteo [Nicolini] this past season—I have raced with the best in the world and the Cigarette is so fast—it is incredible!” When he searched for his own first “go-fast” boat, Formilli Fendi’s choice was also a Cigarette--a 39 Top Gun Unlimited with twin Mercury Racing SCi 700’s. It easily did 105 mph and he was in his element—the talk of the marina in his native Rome. “I have been very good for Cigarette in Italy!” he laughs, “There are now five Cigarettes at my marina!” Not one to blend into a crowd, the dashing Italian immediately felt the need to “step up” to a bigger and faster boat. Over time, he has owned five, from the classic Top Gun, to a new 50’ Marauder, the largest in the Cigarette line.

Emblazoned with his family coat of arms, the deep silvery grey and black metallic paint reflects a dark silhouette on the water. It’s deep, throaty throttle heralds its exit from, or entry to a port. “I have to advise people when I start the engines or they can get startled!” Formilli Fendi says, “I love to hear that noise! In Europe, some people are frightened by it, but here in America, it’s different— people don’t mind. They seem to like it too—they have that culture!” he explains, “In Rome, there is a culture for museums and architecture; in Naples, [Italy] they have a very good culture for fast boats—you see many brands there and more are coming to Europe. Once they try it, the go crazy—it is such a different way to take on the sea!” Formilli Fendi has also involved himself in the culture of Cigarette, visiting the factory to see his boats being built, to understand more about the boats and the company with whom he feels a strong relationship. “Cigarette’s quest for quality and fine finishing is very much like my family’s business and our personal style,” he says, “We all have the passion for creating the best—a luxury product that people are proud to own. When you share that passion, you understand why someone works so hard to be the best and why the finished product evokes so much pleasure—that is how we feel about Cigarette.” With his family, Formilli Fendi enjoys island hopping in the Med from his Rome home-base; Capri, Portofino, Amalfi, Galli Island, where he was invited to Nureyeve’s former mansion, are all great stopover points and the Cigarette is a good calling card. “When they see the Cigarette, they all say, 'Come by and see us!'” Formilli Fendi has repeated the family tradition by taking his own teenage son, Francesco, in the boat, allowing him to experience the mastery of power. “He does well—he has his feet on the ground!” says Formilli Fendi, admiring the discipline of his young son. His brother, Guido, still a Porsche GT car racer, has also been bitten by the culture of speed and is planning the build of his next Cigarette—a Top Fish Open. They all like to boat together, including his other brother who prefers yachting and his sister who always joins her “go-fast” brothers. “To have an American boat is the thing—it is like having a German car—they are the best,” he explains and Cigarette is his only choice. Formilli Fendi is now working on his next Cigarette—a 46’ with suspension seats—a hold-over from racing to combine with pleasure boating. “I think the 46 may be the best hull for me—it is long and fast and easy to dock. It will be a beautiful boat! In my Cigarette, we are fast— it takes 10 minutes to go everywhere—not one hour!” Says the man who has a culture for style—and for speed!

Phil Lipschutz Phil Lipschutz is a boater.

That term is a

distinction and a matter of pride from a man who has devoted much of his life to boating— most specifically to Cigarette Racing Team. He is the longest-standing, American, exclusive Cigarette dealer located at TNT Marine Center in North Miami and has a following of loyal customers, based on his focus, service and love of the brand.

31 IV.I

As a kid traveling with his Dad on boating rendezvous on the Ohio River in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, Phil and his brothers were smitten with operating boats. Annual 4th of July vacations to the Madison Regatta to see the Unlimited Hydroplane races planted the “speed seed” and before he was old enough to drive, Phil was out testing his older brother’s hydroplane at 95 mph. A friend signed for him to prematurely get his racing license and it was a surprise for his parents to learn that he had won the Madison Gold Cup when they read the headlines in the Cincinnati newspaper!

Years of success in various racing circuits earned Phil a job transporting boats for Dollar Marine in Miami, Florida where Cigarette Racing Team became a customer. He became friendly with the area boat dealers and brokers, hauling boats to new customers, and consequently, became a resource to boat buyers as he knew much about the various boats that had been sold. As a result, he became a broker and sales rep for Cigarette—the start of a long and lucrative career. Cigarette’s corporate on- and off-again love affair with racing also played into Phil’s love for speed, as in 1999, he was able to achieve a lifetime goal—a National Championship for Cigarette Racing Team in Key West, the highlight of his racing career and a feather in his cap as a successful and savvy Cigarette dealer. “We earned that #1 in the Cigarette logo!” Phil states. “Since 1984, I’ve worked on one kind of boat and that’s a Cigarette—I know the inside and outside of each one,” Phil states, “When I sell a Cigarette, I stay with ‘my’ boat while it’s being built at the factory to delivery. Then I help my customers dial the boat in and learn about its operation. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, but everyday, I learn something new. I stay in touch with all the owners and share my knowledge with them. They know their boats are well-taken care of.” That personal attention to detail has earned the “Lipship Edition” sticker on “his” Cigarettes, something in which he and his customers take great pride. He has sold hundreds of boats, and works to “get the most out of ” each Cigarette and to keep them operating reliably. Phil attends many poker runs and boating events around the country and is pleased to see the fruits of his labor. “At some events, we’ll see 20-25 boats that have come through my shop— they’re still running, look good and they have my name on them. I treat customers the way I like to be treated. The people who work with me know what I like and they provide the same level of attention. We’re ‘clean freaks’—people can bring us their boats filthy dirty and empty and when they come back, they’re clean, full of gas, and pointed in the right direction! I have boats here from Germany, Denmark and California—we know they’re here on vacation and want to enjoy their boating time. They like the service we give them.” Phil has also participated in many movies, television shows, and music videos where celebrities are featured in Cigarettes. The Cigarette factory sent Ramesh to Doller Marine to work with Ron Doller and Phil Lipschutz to create a one of a kind Cigarette. The boat was the most expensive and fastest Cigarette pleasure boat ever built at that time. It featured a Kevlar hull, all custom upholstery, one of a kind paint job, and Hawk 540 engines. This was one of the very first boat to be built with a Stellings extension box. The boat was called Cigarette 38 SEL (Special Edition Lip-Ship). This boat ran 78 mph which for the day was very fast. This boat was featured in many movies like Thunderboat Row, BL Striker, The Take, Married to the Mob, and many more. It was also used in the Alamo Rent a Car national television commercial that played for more than 5 years. Ramesh later had Phil acquire a 38

This tiny, bustling island is BIG in tourism—especially for music and fun lovers who come not only for the gorgeous waters, beaches and stunning restaurants, but more for the marathon music sessions at the popular clubs that permeate Ibiza Town and Marina! Famous names like Pacha, Amnesia, Privilege and Space dominate the late night-to-early morning dance and party scene and foster an Ibiza lifestyle. There, calling it a “night” at 7 AM, rising at noon and having cocktails while watching the sunset before an early evening nap—then going out to have dinner and starting it all again—is “normal.” The waters of the Mediterranean Sea beckon boaters after they shed the night’s haze. Jaunts to Mallorca or the soothing beaches of Formentera are good therapy—especially when in a Cigarette, you can get there quickly and enjoy the romp through the choppy, clear green sea. Jump in for a swim, go snorkeling or float to the beach at the famous “El Tiburon” for a suntan, nap or snack at the restaurant. Your Cigarette is your chauffeur to the best of the Spanish coast where rugged cliffs meet the Mediterranean Sea at soothing, sandy white beaches! Then back in Ibiza, the Marina is a hub for the “rich and infamous” and the many Cigarette owners who enjoy the good life on this fantasy island. Nearly 20 Cigarettes frequent this hot-spot and just a short jaunt from the Marina to the west, is San Antonio, the “sunset strip.” Here, revelers watch the flaming sunset in a relaxed atmosphere at the famous Café del Mar, or listen to the “chill” music of the world-famous Cala Jondal beach clubs at the south end of the island--all as a preamble to the coming night’s adventures. In a Cigarette, the journey is the attraction, but in Ibiza, so is the destination…

Miami's Boat Show “Dream no small dreams, for they have no power to move the hearts of men.” — Goethe

What began as a dream in 1941 for a group of avid boater dealers who wanted to generate some interest for the marine industry, has turned into one of the top five boat shows in the world, ranking with Genoa, Dubai, Tokyo and Dusseldorf. This enterprising group of entrepreneurs chose Miami as the site for their show, demonstrating that they were not just dreamers, but smart businessmen. Why Miami? “It’s where the bucks are baby!” says Bob Black, longtime industry PR consultant to the marine industry. Skip Braver, President and CEO of Cigarette Racing Team agrees by stating, “The Miami International Boat Show has always been the most important for us. We attend shows around the world, but when there is new product to be announced, Miami is where we make the debut. This show has become the most recognized as THE place to be, whether you are a customer or a dealer. It’s also our home-base, so we feel it’s appropriate to make Miami the place where Cigarette makes its mark. Plus, who doesn’t want to be in Miami in February!” he adds. The Miami International Boat Show, now in its 69th consecutive year, was purchased by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA )in 1984 and the trade association has molded the dream event into what is considered by manufacturers, dealers, vendors and consumers as THE boat show in the US. The then-NMMA president Jeff Napier, and his colleague Frank

41 IV.I

Scalpone (who helped merge the Boating Industry Association with the National Association of Engine Manufacturers to create the new NMMA organization), convinced their colleagues that the show had great potential. The ability to add an in-water component to the indoor venue—especially for a winter show—was invaluable. “South Florida is a market no one can match,” Napier said then and his words are still valid today. The Miami International Boat Show is a dream that came true. It is an event surrounded by a tropical paradise where beautiful people and boats meet to do business, to have fun and to experience the boating life. Stretching over 2.5 million gross square feet, from the Miami Beach Convention Center to downtown Miami’s Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center, this boat show is large enough to accommodate all facets of boating from power to sailing to fishing and yachting and all the accoutrements of each. According to Cathy Rick-Joule, NMMA’s VP of Southern Shows, “Miami is ‘one stop-shopping.’ You see a boat in air-conditioned space, go to the marina and take it for a ride, buy the boat and come back the next day to get all the accessories!” The Miami International Boat Show enjoys the benefit of offering the perfect escape from winter over the long Presidents’ Day weekend in mid-February. The city’s strong Latin American demographic and draw brings an additional international component to the strong European and Asian audience—attendees come from over 80 countries and all

42 IV.I

50 states. What started as a dealer show now leans strongly toward the manufacturer so that consumers can talk directly with someone from the factory—a rare and valuable opportunity when making a significant purchase. “The Miami Show has always been the hot bed of high performance,” Black adds, “Anything new—boats, engines, accessories—has always been introduced in Miami. It is the boat racing capital—there was a lot of racing around New York and New Jersey, but more around Miami than anywhere—the OPBRA and APBA always had a big presence there, going back into the 70’s.” As Ben Wold, Executive Vice President of the NMMA states, “Boat shows were designed to promote the boating lifestyle—its affordability, ease and fun. Boating can be a weekend getaway, a second home, a date or a family outing. Miami has all of those lifestyle elements!” Wold has watched the show grow over his 35 year tenure and credits its success to his staff, including Rick-Joule who has 22 years invested in the show, along with Debbie Harewood, with 23 years in operations and numerous other long-term team members who work on the Miami Show all year. With staff in South Florida and Chicago and over 1900 temporary and union workers, exhibit supervisors, parking lot attendants, staging personnel, and even marketing staff on segues, handing out show information, the NMMA people power is all geared to create a positive attendee experience.

SMOKIN’ MAGAZINE

While NMMA president Thom Dammrich recognizes that the show revolves around the exhibitor, he also notes that the change in marketing for boat shows has become consumer-focused. “Consumers today have higher expectations. They are more sophisticated, more demanding and they want more information.” Adds Rick-Joule, “Plus, they want the information in the lifestyle and language they want.” Hence, the NMMA responds to copious email and has delivered via web a broad assortment of advance information for the consumer and can transfer inquiries back to dealers and manufacturers through its “Advantage” program. Boaters can be a part of the show’s social network on Facebook and do their research in advance so when they get to the show, they can be informed and efficiently find what they want in a timely manner. With a great deal of space and products to cover, it can help to have a plan rather than wander aimlessly through the show! Though the NMMA is an “umbrella” marine organization, it is also an industry advocate, examining legislation and representing manufacturers on issues like luxury taxes, ethanol use, EPA regulations and waterway access. However, as a boat show owner and producer, the organization takes seriously its responsibility to deliver more value to the show attendee. The shows have added more attractions--inviting TV stars like the Hillstrand brothers from the Discovery Channel’s “The Deadliest Catch,” exhibiting celebrities’ newest boats and offering activities for kids like boat building contests. The audience, which used to be predominantly men 24-54 is now more varied, including empty nesters, families and the “next generation” of boaters—all looking for entertainment as well as a first-person experience of boating. NMMA statistics indicate that 58% of boater go to boat shows—35% to buy a boat and 65% for gear and accessories and 96% say that boat shows help keep them informed about boating. The increased popularity of fishing has helped the Miami International Boat Show grow as the NMMA reports that 60% of all fishing is done from a boat and 60% of boats are bought for fishing. The fact that fishing has changed from a functional to a more luxurious sport has also impacted exhibits and offerings. Including attractions like Miami’s Big Game Room—a paradise for sports fishing, located on the upper level of the convention center—adds an element of entertainment and education for fishing enthusiasts—and aspiring ones. Bigger boats accommodating more people have also made an impact on exhibit size and increased expansion to the in-water areas with yachts on display on north Collins Avenue as well as power and sail boats at Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center. Shuttle buses between the venues also help show attendees, both exhibitors and customers, who get to rest their feet and relax on the ride, rather than fight cross-town traffic. The Miami International Boat Show is an experience—not just a boat show. The city bustles with international energy and the nightlife can match the activity level of the day. From South Beach to Sea Isle, from Collins to the Convention Center, to see it all can take the whole weekend. But if you can dream it, you can find it at the Miami International Boat Show.

LIFE BEGINS AT

Turning 40 was often seen as a rite of

passage into “middle-age” where people

reflect on the past four decades and the future ahead.

But as the 21st

century ushered in a new outlook on aging, we find 40 is the “new” 30 and that 40 is not about chronological age, but about a maturity and stability that can bring satisfaction and rewards for a job well-done and a life well-lived.

45 IV.I

Cigarette Racing Team now reflects back on its prestigious history as it experiences its most exciting growth phase in highly innovative times. Though there are many parallels between the old and new Cigarette, the company is definitely poised to carry its legacy as a global, luxury brand forward. The charismatic Don Aronow was known as a shrewd businessman who knew his way around a non-compete clause, women and celebrities. As an icon of the performance industry, he was featured in ads for Hennessey cognac and Rolex watches and befriended the rich, royal and famous who bought Cigarette boats and carried the brand around the world. Customers like Roger Penske, George Bush, Augie Bush and Sr., Princess Caroline of Monaco joined kings and princes who added an aura to the brand, which oozed sex appeal and power. And that trait never changed—there is something inherently sexy about a Cigarette that never ages or grays and the brand relishes and flaunts that universal attraction! Aronow built his business and reputation on racing, winning every championship and holding records, both in his own right and thanks to the famed racers who ran Cigarettes. Names like Rocky Aoki, Carlo Bonomi, Billy Martin, Tom Gentry, Betty Cook and Bob Nordskog recall an era when powerboat racers were the heroes of the adventuresome crowd who took to the seas, at what were then record breaking speeds--now seen as cruising speeds for a Cigarette!

Located on 188th Street in North Miami Beach (now Aventura), the old Cigarette Racing Team factory was housed in two building on either side of the street. "Thunder Alley" as it became known was Don Aronow's world. Almost all the boat manufacturing facilities on that street were originally related to him in one way or another. For over thirty years, all of Cigarette's production came from the cramped 30,000 sq. ft. factory. In 2003, the booming real estate market and ending lease agreement forced Cigarette to relocate. It was the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one.

1969-2004

2004-2011 The new Cigarette Racing Team factory opened its doors in Opa Locka, Florida in 2004. Just 20 minutes from its previous location, the new 150,000 sq. ft. facility was specifically designed for a flawless and efficient production flow. The factory boasts dedicated hangars for laminating, finishing, rigging, upholstery, carpentry, metal work and R & D. In addition, a state-of-the-art paint booth and paint mixing room have also been added along with one of the largest embroidery machine in the United States.

After Aronow’s dramatic shooting death on 188th Street, the legendary Thunderboat Row that he created in North Miami, a series of ups and down left the still highly-reputable brand on a roller coaster of business cycles. In 2002, Skip Braver entered the scene and began to change the future of Cigarette Racing Team. Braver is like Aronow in some ways—a straight-shooting, savvy, successful businessman with an appreciation for performance. But rather than build the company on his own reputation, Braver bought a boat, then bought the company to build the brand. He and his business advisors recognized the value of the name and the #1logo and he set about the task of restoring Cigarette to its true #1 status in the industry. Rather than rely on the “Racing Team” part of the company’s name, Braver felt that the Research & Development could be better achieved in the recreational realm, where most of the customer base used their boats. Poker Runs had taken a firm hold of the market and Braver and his team began enjoying the recreational runs with their customers, listening to them and learning where improvements and changes could best be made. Braver also learned from his experience in his own boats as he spent his time on Lake Michigan in often challenging waters. Back in Miami, Braver took advantage of the change in zoning that necessitated moving the factory from 188th Street—property now occupied by high-rise condos—to a commercial area just west of the former waterfront site in Opa-Locka, Florida. From a ragged

HOW TO BUILD A CIGARETTE 1

LAMINATION A mold is prepared for fiberglass with a coat of releasing agent. Layers of resin and fiberglass are applied to create the hull and deck structures to be released from the molds after curing.

2

CARPENTRY & RIGGING Using specially treated wood products, bulkheads and stringers are added to the hull by the rigging carpenters, like a spine, creating lightweight strength and flexibility.

3

FINISHING Once the layers of fiberglass have cured, the hull and deck are extracted from the mold and sanded to a flawless finish. The two pieces are then joined and the boat takes shape.

4

30,000 s.f. building that cramped the capabilities of the company, Braver moved the company to a former boat building factory that he totally renovated into 150,000 s.f. of space that provides a progressive work-flow in the immaculately clean, modern and planned space. Workers in uniforms using a time-tracking system, bar codes and a modular building plan, mix the “Old-World” method of handbuilding each boat with the newest technologies and equipment. Resins are still hand-sprayed and rolled over customized molds, but in an EPA-approved atmosphere where safety, high-standards and efficiencies are maintained. Workers take great pride in their contributions to creating each Cigarette as their skills and hard work are a valued part of the company. “We had many offers to move the company to other states where we could build boats more inexpensively,” says Braver, President and CEO, “But Cigarette IS Miami and we couldn’t take people who have worked here for years and move them to North Carolina. We have members of our team who represent generations of Cigarette boat builders—you can’t replace that kind of dedication.”

RIGGING Like the organs of a body, each working part is installed, including the engines. Meticulous detail is involved in every step from pumps and hoses to instrumentation and power.

Braver also added a metal shop, full-sized paint booth, an expanded upholstery shop and in-house embroidery to maintain control of the building process, again adding efficiencies. While the team expanded, the rigging, electrical and carpentry departments became more systematized so that production could be run more predictably, with another team working on new projects, engineering and innovations.

5

ELECTRICAL The “nervous system” of the boat is miles of wiring that connect the power plant to the instruments, propellers and operational systems. Each boat has a particular wire harness cut and coded just for that model.

6

UPHOLSTERY Seats to match the customer’s body size and boat are built by special carpenters and covered with custom-colored and sewn materials. The upholstery of each Cigarette matches the customer’s paint scheme, reflecting the individual’s tastes and preferences.

7

EMBROIDERY Cigarette’s proprietary, in-house embroidery machine runs day and night, creating minutelydetailed and personalized upholstery from the inside out—from the cabin to the sun pad.

8

COCKPIT & INTERIOR Further customization of the dash and cabin match the upholstery to the paint and ensure comfort as well as utility. From storage to seating, the boat maintains a flow of design and functionality.

9

FINAL RIGGING All the pieces come together as finishing touches are applied by master craftsmen. The Cigarette is fully dressed and operational.

10

“I’m not responsible for Cigarette’s success,” says Braver, “This company and Cigarette boats are built by an entire team of people who are passionate about the brand. You can’t work here without having that passion,” he notes. Braver leads by example, spending endless hours to ensure that Cigarette runs like a welltuned engine. But, he also enjoys the process. “I don’t think I have ever worked harder in my life,” says the man who has been an electronics representative, a custom home builder, an exotic and GM car dealer and a day trader, “But I am really having fun at Cigarette,” says Braver, “This is a highly unusual business with so many facets and personalities in it—everyday is something new!” New markets were a priority for Braver as he immediately recognized the value of the international customer. Sportmer Marine in St. Tropez has been Cigarette’s longest-standing dealer and still represents a substantial part of the European market. Building a dealer network across Europe, the Mideast and Russia has added to Cigarette’s success and new, emerging markets continue to be identified and opened. New products have been a part of the growth strategy for the company as Braver watched the market and listened to his customers, eager to satisfy their performance needs. While speed is important to Cigarette, reliability and safety are also priorities and toward that end, Cigarette formed an alliance with Mercury Racing. As Aronow worked with Mercury icon Carl Kiekaefer on perfecting the racing package, Braver works with Mercury’s second generation, Fred Kiekaefer, to test and utilize the company’s new and efficient power and propulsion packages. Cigarette Racing

PAINT & SEA-TRIAL The custom paint of each Cigarette ensures the individuality and the owner identity with the boat. The boat must first pass stringent performance tests in sea trials before it leaves the factory for its new home.

Team was the first to earn Mercury Racing’s T.E.A.M. accreditation and has validated the 1075, 850 and 700 SCi engines. Cigarette hulls and rigging have been refined and “tweaked” to better accommodate the power so that customers can enjoy hours of boating knowing that service is available and their satisfaction is a priority. The collaborative efforts between Cigarette and Mercury Racing continue and are evident in the 2010 line and the AMG-inspired boat making its debut at the Miami International Boat Show. Each boat, from the classic 38 Top Gun, to the quad-350 Verado-powered Top Fish Open and the new Military boat version, sport Mercury power. The AMG 46 is the pinnacle of the line as it combines the top-level of technology from the automotive and marine industries, exemplifying the heights to which Cigarette continues to aspire and achieve. “We never stop exploring ways to improve,” says Braver, “We know that as an international, luxury brand, we need to provide our customers with a level of product that surpass anything else on the market. Cigarette provides a variety of boats for a variety of life and boating styles, but each is distinctively a Cigarette—in style, performance and spirit. The first 40 years showed an exciting period of growth. Wait until you see what we create in the next 40 years!”

The GEICO Caveman Cigarette is a welcomed addition to the popular Miss GEICO Racing Team, a feature on the US Offshore Racing Circuit. While the Miss GEICO turbine-powered catamarans fly across the water to the delight of fans, cheering on the bright chartreuse lady Gecko mascot, The Caveman Cigarette is team owner, John Haggin’s personal VIP and Pace Boat; it offers enjoyment, hospitality and a safe, smooth ride for race officials and guests for whom a ride on a Cigarette Racing Team boat is one to remember!

caveman can do it Miss GEICO Racing is known for its 50’ lightningfast, World Champion turbine-powered catamaran. As the chartreuse streak goes by, emblazoned with the bikini-clad female gecko mascot, it leaves crowds screaming and applauding. But when the Miss GEICO Racing Team went shopping for a VIP boat to carry press, corporate guests and other sponsors to races and promotional events, it came to Cigarette Racing Team. As corporate leaders in their respective fields, GEICO Insurance, AMF Offshore Racing and Cigarette Racing Team formed a new relationship to continue the targeted marketing of the GEICO brand to the performance market. AMF Offshore Racing purchased a Cigarette 38 Top Gun as its VIP boat and branded it with the GEICO Caveman graphics to provide rides and pace boat duties on its extensive “Miss GEICO” US Offshore Powerboat Racing schedule.

Miss GEICO Racing is part of the widely projected and promoted GEICO advertising campaigns--from the GEICO Gecko to the Caveman, to the more recent googley-eyed stack of money, the GEICO insurance message is ubiquitous, helping propel GEICO to become the third largest insurance company in the country. The company’s sponsorship of the three-time World Champion AMF (America Moving Forward) Offshore Race Team, owned by South Florida entrepreneur, John Haggin, has brought it great recognition in the powerboat racing circuit. Performance boats were seen as the perfect venue to build a platform for GEICO’s new powersports insurance program that includes boats, motorcycles, RV’s, ATV’s and personal watercraft. “We are extreme!” is the marketing message. When Haggin approached long-time Miami Cigarette dealer, Lip-Ship Performance about buying a Cigarette to add to the team’s fleet, owner Phil Lipschutz, a World Championship racer, went to Skip Braver, President and CEO of Cigarette Racing Team, and asked him to lend factory support to the deal. Recognizing the powerful marketing support that GEICO puts behind the fan-favorite team, Braver had to concur. “We are very enthused about working with AMF’s professional race team and GEICO’s corporate marketing division. When Cigarette is recognized as the boat of choice to escort prominent celebrities and dignitaries and to share with them the exciting experience of powerboating, we are pleased and proud.” “I saw my first Cigarette at 6-years old when my father took me to the Miami-Bahamas race. Ever since then, I have dreamed of owning a Cigarette and now having one on the GEICO Caveman team is a dream come true!” says Haggin, sporting his signature broad grin, “We wanted the best-of-the-best and we got it! The Cigarette Caveman boat will be the ‘crown jewel’ of the fleet and will receive tremendous exposure!”

The AMF race team consists of World Champion racers who compete in three top-brand “Extreme” Class “Miss GEICO” catamarans, powered by Lycoming helicopter turbine engines with speeds in excess of 185 mph. Its new Cigarette is a single hull, “Vee Bottom”, a classic 38’ Top Gun model, the most popular Cigarette model for over three decades; it is powered by Mercury Racing 525 EFI engines, known as the company’s most reliable and maintenance-free power package. “Speed is important to Cigarette,” says Braver, “But safety, reliability and long-term use are our main priorities—you don’t always get that in a race boat that is continually pushed to its maximum. Whether in racing or in recreational boating, we value dependability and exclusively use Mercury Racing engines.” GEICO, a Washington DC-based company spends hundreds of millions per year in marketing. The AMF/Miss GEICO Offshore Racing Team is part of the Powersports division, a small, but growing portion of the company’s overall budget. GEICO provides marketing materials and supports the team’s racing and promotional efforts as it travels to races, community events, boat shows, air shows—any location where tens to hundreds of thousands of people gather. “The positive reaction of the fans is tremendous! We work this 24/7, 360 days a year!” says Haggin. “Custom-building this, and every Cigarette is a time-intensive, handson process,” says Braver, “Much attention was invested in the perfect recreation of the Caveman logo on the hull, the embroidery in the upholstery and adherence to the signature color scheme. We know this is a ‘show boat’ and Cigarette Racing Team is now a part of Miss GEICO Racing--World Champions united!”

a cigarette in uniform Long-known for commanding visual appeal

and

Cigarette Racing Team’s recreational center console is about to “go to work” serving the country’s military and law enforcement performance boat needs. For 40 years, Cigarette, the icon for all 'go-fast' boats has built its reputation on quality, performance and visual appeal. From its boats to its sometimes risqué advertising, the allure of a Cigarette has been sex appeal and a commanding appearance. However, as the country's defense market grew supporting the Homeland Security, military and law enforcement segments, Cigarette prepared to serve its country. The company developed a 'Military' version of its 39 Top Fish center console, providing a utilitarian, no-frills approach to changing its vastly popular custom fishing boat into a sturdy, top-quality work boat. The cockpit was designed with an all-digital console including GPS and navigation. The arrangement of the dash wraps around the cluster of instruments for ideal visibility. Other instrumentation, including throttles and trim tabs are practically located for ease of operation; the custom hard-top, support mechanisms and stand up head remain standard as in all Cigarette center console models. The custom seating is notable, utilizing Stidd Systems, a leading manufacturer of ergonomic marine seats. The model used was originally developed for the US Navy Seals’ boats and was modified exclusively for Cigarette to provide the proper center of gravity for the passengers and power. The shock-mitigating seats are un-coated aluminum, with high-tenacity polyester upholstery, covering a proprietary foam base, providing safety for long duration and open water transit. Cigarette’s construction team

also created a custom support for the seats to provide optimal comfort, strength and durability in rough seas. All Cigarettes are Mercury-powered, but for its Top Fish, Cigarette prefers either triple or quadruple Verado® 6-cylinder outboard engines. The Military boat is equipped with triple 300’s, providing smooth acceleration, reliability and fuelefficient power. “This boat demonstrates more of Cigarette’s diversity and ability to respond to the market,” states Skip Braver, President and CEO, “The US government requires only the finest products so Cigarette is pleased to be in strong contention for some upcoming contracts. The process [of acquiring government contracts] is lengthy but we know our Military 39 center console is up to the task and await our ‘marching’ orders.” Cigarette recently offered a ride on this Top Fish Open boat to the Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito and Commission Chair Marc Sarnoff. While doing so, the company also joined forces with a prominent local non-profit organization, “Shake-A-Leg Miami” to offer a boating experience to its participants. ShakeA-Leg Miami helps those with disabilities and at-risk youth find empowerment; its students learn life lessons, make friends and have fun, with boating as the backdrop. “Cigarette is one of the best powerboats on the market and has set the industry’s highest standard in design, manufacturing, customer service and organizational development.,” says ShakeA-Leg Miami CEO Harry Horgan, “We are extremely grateful to them for allowing the students this unique opportunity.” “While we often take the pleasure of boating for granted, it is refreshing and rewarding to see those who do not get to enjoy the sport finally get to experience powerboating first-hand. We’re proud to know that at Shake-A-Leg Miami, they got to do that in a Cigarette!” says Braver.

NO limits Call it an action-packed boating version of 5-card Stud. Poker Runs are a social and sporting phenomena, fueling the high-performance boat industry.

Manufacturers and dealers have experienced a

full-throttle sales impact, as powerboaters pursue fast fun with their friends. Over the last decade, the number of powerboating organizations has grown exponentially, dedicated to the “sport,” its boats and people--both colorful, high-powered and all about fun. The National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), reports that motorboating participation takes over 27.8 million adults to the country’s waterways each year; and each weekend, at various lakes, oceans and rivers across the country, powerboaters turn out to test their prowess, power and luck against their friends, and sometimes rivals. A Poker Run is not considered or sanctioned as a “race,” it is simply a recreational rendezvous where dozens to hundreds of boating enthusiasts congregate at a given location to enjoy a weekend of water and fun-filled boating activity. “These events are not just about who wins the poker hand, it’s about looks and performance and that is where Cigarette excels,” says Cigarette Racing Team™ CEO and President, Skip Braver. “Our customers are the cream at the top of the market,” he adds. When Braver bought the premier custom performance boatbuilding company in 2002, his plan was to capitalize on the brand recognition and build the company’s profitability based on the legend built by Cigarette’s founder, Don Aronow, in the 70’s. “Though our history was built on a stellar racing record, it makes sense, in this day, when high-performance and highprofile recreational boating is driving the market, to capitalize on the Poker Run sector and structure our marketing around it.” What is a Poker Run? The event usually starts a day in advance so people can have dinner, drinks and entertainment, while learning the schedule, route, rules and safety regulations of the Poker Run. From the start, boaters proceed to five different locations, usually with a lunch stop, and to pick up a playing card, sealed in an envelope. After a day of “running” from check-point to check-point, the group again congregates, turning playing cards in at the final destination for the wrap-up festivities, including dinner and posting of all the card hands. The Poker Run winning title is given to the 65 IV.I

boater who has the best Poker Hand and wins various valuable prizes. Often, the events are held as fundraisers for charities and any monies raised are often donated and prizes are offered in a festive auction. Many groups include additional prizes for the bestdressed team, best paint design, best boat in various classes, and farthest distance traveled to the run. The popularity of the concept has swelled so that the annual Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run that coincides with the World Championship boat races, has boasted over 200 registered boats and nearly 800 participants from around the globe. “We are always appreciative of Cigarette’s support and impressed by the sheer numbers of Cigarettes in our runs,” says Stu Jones, Founder of the Club. “From a classic, mintcondition late 80’s Top Gun to a top-of-the-line 46’ Ryder, Cigarette customers have been enjoying FPC Poker Runs for almost 20 years!” “We’re very serious about our business,” says Braver, “But our business is based on people having fun boating. So as part of our marketing strategy, we’re having fun, building our custom-boating business. We can’t think of a better way for our customers and competitors to see our top-of-the-line boats than by getting out and enjoying the Cigarette lifestyle with them. The more we learn about what is important to them in their sport and activities, the better we can serve them with the best in quality and performance. We are a luxury brand in the marine industry—our customers are the best and most loyal and we intend to make certain that they continue to enjoy their Cigarettes.” From Lake of the Ozarks to Lake Havasu, from the Caribbean to the Pacific, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, Poker Runs are in high gear. Cigarette Racing Team™ invites you to join friends to experience this social phenomena first-hand. It’s not just about boating, it’s about our lifestyle.
