STUDIO NOTE
Rockland School of Ballet a note from the studio It is almost that time of year again, show time! We are absolutely, positively thrilled to announce that our show this year will be at the Rockport Opera House. Miss Emily went to the Opera House a couple of weeks ago to meet with the manager and sign on the dotted line. The Frog Princess is sure to be an outstanding performance. On that note, our dancers are hard at work learning choreography, and Miss Emily and Miss Jessica are busily choreographing dances, ordering costumes and working out all of the fine details that go along with putting on a production.
We ask that all dancers please make their best effort to be at all of their classes from now until April (show time). We will be teaching, fine tuning, and working hard on all of your dances and need all of you present! Additionally, stay tuned for information regarding portrait day, extra rehearsal days and important details regarding dress rehearsal and show time. We appreciate the efforts of all dancers and their families in helping to make this a fantastic production!

February Monthly Objective Expressing Emotions #r$gh Movement
6
Expressing Emotions #r$gh Movements
By expressing emotions through movement dancers are able to tell a story without using words. Usually in class, dancers should have a genuine smile or pleasant expression on their faces, but dancers also should be able to express a broad range of emotions with their faces and through their bodies. Since dance is a theatrical art form, telling a story through movement and music and learning to express the necessary emotion is often critical to the telling of a story.. Some of the different emotions dancers can portray with their bodies and faces are: -Happy -Sad -Mad -Angry -Excited

Ada Marves Miss Ada Marves, age 8, is from North Haven island and began dancing when she was 3 years old. Ada is in the Leap ‘n Learn program on Fridays, and she loves to dance. Ada strives to be precise in her technique and is able to work hard when she puts her mind to it. She currently takes lessons in ballet and creative dance and in the past has participated in tap and jazz dance as well. Ada has lovely arms; her port de bras shows her dedication to beauty and honors her love of ballet.
In her first recital, “The Awakening Dream” (spring 2010), an original ballet written by Miss Emily, Miss Ada was a ladybug. Ever since that first performance Miss Ada has continued to grow as a beautiful and talented dancer. Brava Ada keep up the good work and don’t ever stop dancing!

February WORDS OF THE MONTH

Rond de Jambe Rond de Jambe (n): (rawn duh zhahnb) Round of the leg, that is, a circular movement of the leg. Ronds de jambe are used as an exercise at the bar, in the center and in the adage, and are done a terre or en l’air. All are done clockwise (en dehors) and counterclockwise (en dedans).
Rond de jambe a terre (n): (rawn duh zhahnb a tehr) Rond de jamb on the ground. An exercise at the bar or in the center in which one leg is made to describe a series of circular movements on the ground. Both legs must be kept perfectly straight and all movement must come from the hip. The toe of the working foot does not rise off the ground and does not pass beyond the fourth position front or fourth position back. This is an exercise to turn the legs out from the hips, to loosen the hips and keep the toe well back and heel forward.
Rond de jambe en l’air (n): (rawn duh zhahnb ahn lehr) Rond de jambe in the air. The thigh must be kept motionless and the hips well turned out. The whole movement is made by the leg below the knee. The thigh should also be held horizontal so that the pointed toe of the working foot passes at the hight of the supporting knee. Ronds de jamb en l’air may be done with the leg extended to the second position en lair and closed to the calf of the supporting leg. The accent of the movement comes when the foot is in the second position en l’air. Movement is done en dehors and en dedans.
en-dehors (n): (ahn duh-AWR) Rond de jamb outward. en-dedans (n): (ahn duh-DAHN) Rond de jamb inward.
20
Fondu Fondu, fondue (n): (fawn--DEW) Sinking down. A term used to describe lowering of the body made by bending the knee of the supporting leg. In some instances the term fondu is also used to describe the ending of a step when the working leg is placed on the ground with a soft and gradual movement .
Battement Fondu (n): (baht-MAHn fawn-DEW) From fifth position the right foot moves to sur le cou-de-pied devant while the left leg does a demi-plie, then the right leg opens forward with a small developpe to the fourth position front, pointing the toe on the ground as the left leg straightens.
Sur le, cou-de-pied:Â "(sewr luh koo-duh-PYAY) The working foot is placed on the part of the leg between the base of the calf and beginning of the ankle.
21
S!teanu Souteanu: (soot-NEW); sustained. Battement Souteanu: (bat-MAHN soot-NEW); Battement sustained. Fifth position right foot front. Fondu on the left leg, sliding the right foot (with straight knee) to the fourth position front, to the second position or to the fourth position back, pointe tendu. Straighten the left knee, closing the right foot in fifth position. The Left leg then straightens and rises on the demi pointe as the right leg is drawn to it and both legs join in the fifth position demi-pointe.
22
Fra"é
Frappé: (fra-PAY) Struck. Battement Frappé: (bat-MAHN fra-PAY) Struck battment. An exercise in which the dancer forcefully extends the working leg from a cou-de-pied position to the front side or back. This exercise strengthens the toes and insteps and develops the power of elevation. The working foot is placed in sur le cou-de-pied devant with the knee bent, all five toes resting of the floor sur la demi pointe and the face of the heel touching the ankle joint. With a strong striking of the ball of the foot on the floor and rising of several inches off the floor in a strong point. The foot is then returned to the original position in sur le cou-de-pied.
